I want to share a feedback which if I had the opportunity to read myself a month ago would have helped me making a choice.
3 years ago, I bought the LG Optimus 2x. The main criteria for me was the speed, not to play, but I think that most features on a phone are useful if they are snappy, I don't want to stand in the street for 30 seconds waiting for my app to load, GPS to localize, search to be sent and result to be displayed. When first used the 2X, I was actually not so impressed with the speed, but it was overall a decent phone (camera, size, ...).
Over time, multiple things bothered me: phone getting slower over time, whatever ROM I would use, battery drains, random reboots or freeze, backlight LED and micro USB connector started to be problematic.
I have then started to consider buying a new phone with the first idea to go away from LG. I wanted a fast phone, around 400EUR with a good camera. I considered the following phones:
Xperia Z1 compact, there are so many reviews underlining problems, mainly with the camera (maybe exaggerated, but still scary)
OnePlus One, it is too large for me, doesn't have LTE 800MHz and availability unknown
Galaxy S4 almost as good as the LG G2 with a little minus for screen, CPU and battery
Moto X, very tempting, perfect size, but less "future proof" than G2
Lumia 930, very tempting too, very good camera, snappy, but more expensive than G2, less good integration with Google services
Ascend P7, similarly to the S4, very close to the G2 on many aspects but little behind overall in my taste (CPU, unsure I would like the iOS-like GUI)
So I finally decided to try again LG with the G2.
My fears were that the G2 is too large and many people reports problems with Kitkat.
Here is my feedback after one week of usage.
Overall, for the moment, I am very happy with my choice. Everything is fast, switching between apps is quick and easy, connecting to GPS, replying to a SMS when using an other app, quickly going to check Facebook, all this was a pain with the Optimus 2X and is a bless with the G2. Camera and screen are really nice too. Battery life is great, no need to constantly disable as many features as possible to keep battery for a day. So far, no freeze, reboot, crash, ...
The 2 concerns I have are:
1. The power button at the back, not a big deal, but not as convenient as when it is on the top.
2. I am tall (1m93, 6'4") and have large hands, but I still find the phone a bit too large to handle with one hand, I think that 5" with thin bezels is really the best size for a smartphone, Xperia Z2, OnePlus One, Galaxy S5, LG G3 are really too large for me. If the trends continues, in 3 years, for my next smartphone, I will not buy a flagship but a midrange, like a successor of a Moto X, maybe, or a OnePlus mini, if it comes.
I hope this will help others making a decision when considering buying a new phone.

I use it one hand no problem and am considerably shorter than you at under 6ft.
Agreed that 5" is the sweet spot. Actually the LG Optimus G is awesome in the hands and pocket. Wish LG fixed something like that in 2014 / 2015.
I was an owner of o2x. When I first bought it, it was the first dual core android ever. So it felt exciting. After some time you realize that android is just made as a ram hog and lg roms were just so not nice. But cm7 on o2x was just really wonderful. With cm10 the phone was just done with. Its not good enough.
lg g2 is really good that I guess lg start knowing what to do.
I still prefer g2 stock ROM over paranoid android that I'm using now. Because temperature and battery consumption are just way better. Pa is still in beta and cm11 is just starting to move on to KitKat source. So let's wait.
Everything in g2 is a relieve just no SD card slot.

About your concerns its actually weird but I rarely ever use the back buttons unless I want to reboot phone, always use knock on or the notifications area for toggling volume and utilize quiet hours so that I don't bother putting my phone on vibrate. I find the G2 to be a perfect size for me and I'm 6ft. Came from a Nexus 5 and couldn't be happier with the battery life and camera, solid phone and best I've ever owned and G2 Tweakbox gives me the few extra options to disable annoying pop ups, volume keys skip tracks etc in LG software, not interested in upgrading any time soon
I m still using lg optimus 2x.....switching to new phone soon...

go for g2, i still own o2x as a backup device...
btw back buttons are great feature when you get used to them after a few days...
I forgot to mention that I had also considered the Nexus 5 for the OS updates, size and price. What held me back was the camera and battery. Also, since 4.0, I don't find the OS updates so important, as long as it runs my apps.

Just picked up a G2 myself yesterday for under £300 new, superb bargain but i do have fears that LG will stop supporting this phone once the G3 is out, even though the hardware is still top spec, as LG are well known for lack of support to their former flagships.
As for the Moto X i also have this aswell & i actually find this phone will be more future proof in regards to updates than the G2 will be, 4.4.3 will be on this phone well before the G2 get's it also 4.5 later on in the year, but i be very surprised if the G3 receives the 4.5 update as this will be more for the G3.

I may be wrong, but I don't believe that "future proof" is still so much about getting newer Android releases but rather about having the raw power (CPU, RAM, ...) to run future apps. What do you have in Kitkat that you were missing in Jelly Bean?

Depends what you do with your phone, if you game ect then having the best possible specs is always best.
But if you don't as shown with the recently released Moto E, it does all the basic task's just fine & quicker than the Galaxy S5, there is a video on youtube.

To me it more important that a phone receives regular updates rather than all out specs.
The G2 as mentioned by other users on here has a few bugs with 4.4.2, as do other smartphones inc the Nexus 5, when 4.4.3 comes out hopefully this will fix alot of problems people have been having with 4.4.2, the G2 will get it.... at some point, but after that nothing else, will you be happy using your high end spec phone with no more support in the software, because they moved all their efforts onto the G3?, while the likes of the Nexus 5 & the Moto X,G & E will get 4.4.3 quickly and the next major android update later on in the year, while the G2 will probably stuck on 4.4.3.

G2 and Optimus 2X user here too.
The power button in my O2X is starting to act up (again, as I already had it replaced before).
It is a looovely jump. My O2X can barely multitask between browser and Play Store. I have downgraded my O2X to Gingerbread (Temasek's CM7 to be precise), and I just use it now as a bike computer (Strava app).
Before I got the G2, I actually told myself that I wanna try a Sony or an HTC or a Samsung (I havent tried any of their droids yet), but the knock on and slim bezels of the G2 just won me over.
I bought my Moto G 4G a couple of days ago and was wondering if I made the right choice - I can still send it back. Are there any reviews available on the E2 yet? I haven't found any.
How is the display, compared to the Moto G? The resolution is obviously worse, but how about brightness and viewing angles? Is it a bad compromise compared to the Moto G?
battery - would make a difference for me. The Moto E2 will probably be noticeably better, right?
The camera doesn't have a flash - but does it really make a huge difference? The camera in the Moto G is just bad.
I guess the processor won't make a huge difference
the Moto G is already quite old - the E2 will receive updates for a longer time I guess.
Maybe someone can just share their general view on this topic. I'm really happy with the Moto G so far, and usually that's all that counts. But you know how it is with that stuff...

Display: The Moto E display is a bit lower resolution, but not bad at all. You can't see the pixels unless you hold it right up to your face. Brightness and viewing angles are good. Both have IPS LCD displays.
Battery: Moto E will probably be better. Both have good battery life.
Camera: I don't know if you care about the flash. Rear camera on Moto E is usable but not great. At least it is much better than the first gen E. Front camera on the new E is rubbish. I don't know much about the Moto G 4G camera, but it is probably a bit better than the second gen E.
Processor: The Cortex A53 is a significant improvement over the A7. It's around 40-50% faster. Once it gets 5.1, the new Moto E will be really snappy, trust me. Even as is on 5.0, it runs very well, better than the G.
Updates: Yes, I'd reckon that the Moto E will receive updates for years to come, while the Moto G 4G will probably be approaching EOL after it gets 5.0.

Thanks for your reply. So it sounds like a sure thing for you, if you don't care about the camera. I just ordered the E2 on Amazon, so I'll directly compare them on Friday. Thank god Amazon is so nice when it comes to returning things.
I've had my ME2 (Mote E 2nd Gen) for just over a day now, and I can honestly say it's well worth it. It doesn't feel cheap, is very snappy (no lag at all that I've come across), has a great display even if it isn't "high" resolution, and is very easy to use with "pure" Android as compared to TouchWiz or Sense. I also have a Note 3 with 5.0, and I actually prefer the Moto. The screen size is just right for me. I think anything over 5" is too big (for me) like the Note as I have small hands, but the 4.5" screen doesn't hinder use even being over an inch smaller that I've been using.

id say get the moto e 2nd and wait for the rumored moto g 2015 with lte. as soon as moto drops source for this phone i see development taking off.

The LTE version is already released in Germany (199 €). I'd say this is really a question of if you like the bigger screen...

Hi All,
I was using a S7 Edge from the time it was released. Sold if off after pre-booking Note 7.
Long story short, I am looking to buy a new phone.
Where I stand now: I am currently using a Moto X Style, however it lags a bit in games like Mortal Kombat X. Hence the urge to upgrade.
Options: 1. Moto Z + Hassleblad mod + JBL Speaker mod (Moto Z Force is not available in India)
2. Samsung S7 Edge
I am confused as to which phone to buy. The S7 Edge checks all the boxes except that it doesnt support dual sim and MicroSD at the same time and it has a measly 32GB inbuilt.
The Moto Z doesnt have the above issue.
My biggest question regarding the Moto Z is its camera and the Hassleblad mod. From whatever reviews I have read, the mod is a disaster when it comes to image quality (except when zoomed).
What I use the phone for: Mainly for gaming, GPS, Music, Camera, Surfing.
It would be great if you folks can help me decide.
I'd say go for the Z Force. Bigger battery, better camera. Shatter shield too which helps alot. Ive been using it for the past month and i havnt been disappointed in the performance of the phone. Im aware z force is not available where you are but it wasn't available for me either as im in London. Had it shipped over and I sure havn't regretted it.
I have Moto Z unlocked version in the US and I like it, but for me the low light camera on the S7 edge is better for me and takes and focus a lot quicker, takes pics much faster, the battery in the S7 edge is bigger, unless you get the Moto Mod for the Z, the S7 edge is 3600 and the standard is 2600 for the Z unless you use the moto mod to add to it. me personally I`m probably going back to the S7 edge in few days. I had the Note 7 in the blue coral color and loved it, and that blue coral just came out here in the USA, so I think I will be making trip Back to Best Buy to return my Z for the S7 Edge Blue coral.
I had all the Notes family and the S7E.
I wanted to give Moto a try, the unlock version.. love the Mods. As far as the support( XDA family) it's kinda of weak.
Don't go to the Moto forum, they are all sheep. The Moto Z is a good placement holder until Samsung or Others bring out their 2017 models, in 3 to 4 months.

I go on road trips very frequently and need a mobile with a good cam. This would just be a temporary phone till Sammy's next flagship comes out.
If I can get hold of the Coral Blue S7 Edge, I will it eyes closed. I just love the color.

In your question you ask if it's better for your needs to buy a Samsung S7 Edge or a Moto Z...
You have already received some answers and made your consideration too...
In my opinion they don't have a lot of sense... I'll try to explain (to you and to other interested...) why.
S7 & Moto Z are for sure two of the best phone in the whole market. I don't think there is a single task ("doable" with a smartphone...) that can't be done with them.
Moto Z have the plus of modularity which, beneath still a bit "embrional" an S7 will never have. But let this apart.
The core of the discussion is that S7 and Moto Z are the two (top...) opposite in their projectual philosophy.
Where Samsung decided to provide an "fitfully already to use phone" with a lot of UI extensions, apps, gadgets as so on, BUT (quite) hard to modify and with a lot of possible issues in this, Motorola made the opposite choice: a (really!) quite "Vanilla" Android with no apps added BUT very easy to modify and with an enormous level of possibilities on this, with a great compatibility granted by a quite stock OS. To explain how many a Moto Z is "basic" out of the box, it's shutdown menu include only the... "shutdown" option and a lot of custom ROM come with more apps installed than on Moto Z (it's provided with quite a minimal Gapps....).
So, this is the real point to evaluate in chosing: what type of user are you?
If you are the type of user not interested in rooting/Xposed modules and so on, stick with S7 that is able to provide a quite good experience "out of the box"... if, at the contrary, you are the type of user (like me...) that consider an Android with no root an unuseful piece of hardware, Moto Z is your choice: it's level of "easyness" in customizing it is one of the best ever seen on a stock product in years... a real "ready for geeks" product with infinite possibilities.
Between this two products, let me add a third contendant (a bit more oriented to Moto Z than S7 anyway...): OnePlus 3T is for sure an object to give it a look before decide what to buy...

Thinking about exchange my XL to get the Moto force since I am pretty sure my XL is coming with the 7.1.1 patch that blocks the unlock boot loader and I will have no need for this phone, I was looking at the Moto z force which is much better and looks like it might be a better phone esp with the battery mod. Does the Moto z force have 7.1.1 Roms yet?
You're talking about getting both on Verizon? I believe the Moto Z force is a Verizon exclusive, and won't allow to unlock the boot loader either. I'll go with the Pixel.
If you want to use the Mods go for the Moto Z Force. Also consider that more mods should be coming soon. Also, some of the custom moto actions (like shake for flashlight & turn upside down to silence the phone) are awesome! Also, the ROM seems pretty well optimized, but maybe that's just the SD820 doing his job.
The Pixel XL on the other hand has better software support (just got the January security patches, after being on November security patches before on my Moto Z) and seems to have a slightly better camera. Also, a Moto Z Force with the battery mod should be pretty thick

There seems to be a world wide shortage of Pixel XL phones. I searched and my chosen carrier (gotta use the word 'chosen' loosely) could not supply one even though they have warehouses and stores coast to coast.
So I chose a Moto Z. And to clarify it is not a Moto Z Force or Moto Z Play etc... It seems to be the real generic Moto Z at the high end of the specs and price range.
But to answer your question the best I can - I think the Roms will be available soon from the carriers. My reasoning is that 3 days after I got the phone and the carrier pushed 7.0, the battery life went down. So I expect some updates soon.
But now that I am rooted, at least I get to decide on when to update and I can backout if things get worse.
