Invalid/lost PIN for secure startup/ask PIN on boot screen - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hoping someone can help because my phone is completely unusable. I was in work yesterday and decided to restart my phone because the battery was draining and I didn't have a USB-C cable. It got to the "enter PIN" screen, and the PIN I've always used was invalid. I'm pretty sure I never changed my PIN, but I've used 15 of 30 guesses trying any number that I might have changed it to, and none work. I usually unlock my phone with my finger print, but that isn't possible because this isn't the standard unlock screen, it's the screen before the phone even fully boots up. It's not connected to the internet yet so I can't reset it via Google and there's no "forgot PIN" option.
To further complicate things, the power button on my phone doesn't work (though the finger print sensor still does.) The phone was in my pocket and got moist from sweat on a hot day, and hasn't worked since. So I'm not even able to get into recovery mode. I can turn the phone on by holding volume-down and connecting then disconnecting the charger. I can also get into "download mode" to flash firmware by doing the same thing holding volume-up.
I have my camera photos backed up, but nothing in my downloads directory is saved, nor any pictures received in text messages. I'm sure there's plenty of other stuff that's not backed up too. I hadn't enabled encryption. Is there any way to transfer files off my phone? I'm assuming no, especially since even "adb" doesn't see the phone in either download mode or the PIN entry screen. USB debugging was enabled, but it seems like it's only connecting in "charge only" mode.
I'm not even sure how to get the phone working again, even if I have to wipe it. Should I try flashing a stock ROM (it's not rooted or un-bootlocked)? What happens when I enter the invalid PIN 30 times?
Thanks for any help.
Edit: If it helps, it's the AT&T model, H820

think you must reflash the Rom with fatory reset option. not the best, but you have a usable devive again. Bad you cant root the device and delete just the two *.key files

What happens after 30th attempt to unlock Secure Boot?
I have forgotten the unlock pattern for my G5, which has been sitting in a drawer for the last couple of months.
What happens when I fail to correctly enter the unlock pattern for the 30th time? Will it clear the data and reset itself, if so, no biggy, or will it turn itself into a brick, which would be a biggy?
Regards,

It clears all data and factory resets itself. The only other thing is that you need the password for the Google account it was associated with, in order to use it after it resets. I think it's to prevent phone theft. I remember hearing you shouldn't try to change your Google password within ~3 days of resetting the device either, because it might not work.
Note that if it's the actual screen lock pattern you forgot instead of the startup/boot PIN, you can probably just reset it through Google's Android Device Manager website.

LG G5 SE H840 stuck on secure startup
Hi everyone.
I've tried to flash TWRP on my phone using fastboot and it seems to have worked, but when I reboot, my phone is asking for a secure startup code.
I don't have it because I don't remember setting one up... Each reboot uses 2 of the 30 try allowed and now I'm at 12 left.
I tried default_password, and some other things... not working.
I tried fastboot -w to do a factory reset, but it doesn't want to write "userdata" : "cannot flash this partition in unlocked state"...
Code:
Created filesystem with 11/32000 inodes and 4110/128000 blocks
erasing 'userdata'...
OKAY [ 0.609s]
sending 'userdata' (138917 KB)...
OKAY [ 4.361s]
writing 'userdata'...
FAILED (remote: cannot flash this partition in unlocked state)
finished. total time: 4.989s
For what it's worth : I'm french and the secure startup is in french... Is it because the initial stock rom that I used is still behind whit my settings ? Factory reset should have brought me back to English at least ?
Any help please ?
New problem, new thread.

I remember that I set a secure startup pin in my Lenovo TB3- x70L . But when I typed the pin the tab displayed incorrect pin . So I restarted it a black display appeared to enter the pin.
I tried many times typing the pin what I set . It shows all are incorrect pin . And after many attempts it says "your tab will be wiped after 7 attempts with incorrect pin".
My debugging is off ,OEM is off.(Initially).
But I some how activated debugging.
Pls help me guys if you can.

Same issue
Have you guys ever solved this issue? I am facing the same with my LG G5...

Hey i have a lg aristo 2 and forgot my lockscreen passcode i have tried multiple tips off the web and me and my fiance are both logged into her google account what can i do to get into my phone....

Lg vs087 g5
Had the same problem....Secure boot enter pin. After exceeding the 10 attempts it factory reset itself and went into setup.

I have the exact issue also on my LG G5 H830. it recognizes my fingerprint but the pin ive been using for years says its wrong pattern. I can only unlock my device with my fingerprint. f**king weird.

[Q] Decryption password not working

I encrypted my LG Optimus G E970 using the option in cyanogenmod under security. It prompted me for a pin using a keypad, and I carefully entered a 4 digit pin. At the end of the encryption process, it rebooted and promted me with "Enter password to decrypt storage." Instead of a pin, there was a text box and full android keyboard. I entered my pin, and it said "Try Again." It did not lock me out at all for any amount of time no matter how many passwords I tried. I tried rebooting it, and had the same problem. If I leave the device on without typing in a password, it makes a clicking sound after a minute or so every ten seconds. I can't factory reset in TWRP because it can't mount /data. What should I do?
Hey i'm having the same problem, just got the same phone (LG optimus G e970) 3 weeks ago cause i signed a new 2 year contract, got it rooted and then tried to encrypt and it's not letting me in even though i'm sure the PW is right. someone told me LGNPST might work and i tried doing the steps and it was no good. Anyone have any way of remedying this problem? I have ATT and if all else fails i'll just return to the store to get the encryption off but will they give me any flack if they know it's been rooted? Thanks

[Q] Enter recovery password?

So my daughter got a hold of my phone. "I think" she tried entering the password too many times. Now phone just displays:
Just my Background Picture and this message below.
"To unlock, enter recovery password"
______________________________
Under this message is a Emergency Call button.
I tried my phone password, google password, and Outlook password. All not working. After entering my password, and it is incorrect I get this message:
"You have incorrectly attempted to unlock the phone 1 times. The phone will now be reset to factory default" OK button. (DONT CLICK OK, Just restart phone by holding down power button)
I then just power off and restart. After restart -> Samsung logo -> Verizon logo, it goes back to the "To unlock, enter the recovery password" screen.
Don't want to go to factory default, Any help or suggestions???
Verizon Samsung S3
Verizon just pushed out the KitKat update to my phone last month.
NOT rooted, just stock Verizon ROM.
I can call this cell. I still works. But can't get to regular unlock screen. Always just goes to this Recovery password screen.
Do a hard reset.. no another way
Really... Is there no Default "recovery password". I don't remember setting one up. Any Google work around? I tried searching online, and I don't see anything about this "Recovery Password"... Is this new or do people just not get to this screen?
Well, if there is any Odin-flashable recovery for your phone, you can flash it and then pull important data using ADB. You can also take a Nandroid backup and then use Nandroid Manager to see if you can recover any more data from the ROM.
This will void your warranty.
Bingo... So if anyone is still having this issue, you DON'T have to do a factory reset. I finally solved it (at least it worked for me). Here's how I did it. You need a Google account setup already for this phone. Go to: wwwgooglecom/android/devicemanager (add dots, come on xda, I'm not a newbie -> join in 2009) I tried to Locate and I tried to Ring, they both worked, but you need to do this -> Click the LOCK icon. Then it will try to find your phone. If it does find it, it will ask for a NEW password to "LOCK" your phone. After entering your password, your phone will "LOCK" itself. (Even though it has been locked out already) Once that is done, I went back to my phone and try entering this "new" password I setup in the: recovery password location. It works. Good luck...
Not sure how to mark this Thread as Solved...
Bloody Legend!!
You wanted to say thanks mate.
My S5 has presented me with this screen twice, in the past week! The first time it wiped my phone (and SD card).
Happy New Year!!!
J.
Going to wwwgooglecom/android/devicemanager doesn't work anymore. Now when you try that process, you will get a pop-up saying that the device is already locked and the new password you put in will not be used. You are still required to put in the old Recovery Password. I have wiped the phone and tried to find where one would put in a recovery password and cannot find it.
I contacted Samsung and they told me to use their system. Go to findmymobile(dot)samsung(dot)com and log in (assuming you registered). I logged in, went through the process to unlock my phone. I could see the notification that the unlock was successful, but the lock is still in effect. Samsung support said I would have no other option than to wipe the phone again. I asked how I could get support for the Android lock that was in effect, and they referred me to support(dot)google(dot)com. If you go there, and work your way through the menu, you find that the manufacturer of the phone is supposed to handle Android OS support.
So Samsung has added a proprietary remote unlocking feature, but somehow forgotten to disable the built-in one. Since they have that extra "feature" they won't support the default one.

Bypass Carrier Activation Moto E Lte

I just bought a Moto E 4G LTE that is prebranded US Cellular (no contract). (XT1526 with lollipop 5.0) I don't need to use this device as a phone and do not plan on activating a carrier at any point, but just want to use it connected to my home wifi.
The problem is that the device will not allow me to bypass or skip the activation screen, and gives me no home button or option to even connect to my wifi. My previous Moto E (KitKat) simply allowed me to skip the activation and use the device..this one just keeps calling USC to activate over and over and the only option I have is to call or power off.
I have been searching the web all night and still have not found a solution (which granted may be due to my lack of knowledge in this area in general, and hopefully the solution is obvious to someone more knowledgeable). I tried touching the corners + volume up, but it hasn't worked and I tried different combinations, perhaps I have the wrong corner-order?
Anyone who can help me get this thing to let me in would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.
Anyone? Surely there is a way to get past this activation screen...I'm not completely tech-inept and can follow instructions if it's something I've never done. Would unlocking the phone get past it? Can I even unlock it without being able to get to the home screen? Please help!!
It might be a US Cellular-only thing, as both my Verizon Moto E2 and Moto-Unlocked E2 can skip through the setup process without a SIM by just hitting Next or Skip.

Keep in mind that you cannot unlock the bootloader in 5.1 until you get into the settings, activate the Developer Options (by tapping Build Number a bunch of times), and tick "Allow OEM Unlock".
If you cannot get into the settings at least once, you will not be able to install TWRP or flash anything.
What you need to do if you are stuck on the activation screen is wait 5-10 minutes while the activation runs and fails. After some time you will have the option to connect to wifi. After that you can get into the settings menu.

Good to know!
By the way I don't see a way in the menus to enable GSM/WCDMA. Do you know how to do that?

Download "Network" or "4G Switch" from the Play Store. Open, scroll down a little and look for "LTE/CDMA auto". Change that to "LTE/GSM auto".
If that doesn't work, you might need to do the same workaround that is needed for the Verizon model:

My daughter's put in her password incorrectly to many times and it erased all data and it says choose language then hit start so I do and it says phone activation please wait while we activate your new phone. This may take up to 5 minutes. Emergency calling will not be possible during the remainder of setup. It has been stuck on this page for a couple of hours. What do I do?

Turn off, remove the SIM, turn on.
@xtermmin. Thanks for the advice but didn't work at all. I use the phone overseas and had unlocked the sim tray to get to work with another carrier since I while ago (4 to 5 months ago) with this method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/general/how-to-verizon-moto-e-2015-gsm-network-t3098953).
As of the morning of today, upon turning the phone up, it didn't want to connect nor Wi-Fi neither GSM. I made a factory reset and right after the Verizon logo screen the phone get on the wizard screen for a few seconds (5 to 8 secs) and then leave me on the screen saying "Pleas wait, this may take a few minutes". When I read your comment thought that could be, but there is no change after been done.

If removing the SIM doesn't allow you to get past the activation screen, then it sounds like something on your ROM might have corrupted or something. Have you tried reflashing the stock firmware?

I'm trying getting it done with this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...e-restore-moto-e-2015-stock-firmware-t3044936), but can do anything after putting the phone on fastboot. BTW, I think before doing the factory reset the phone had an update (a security patch of may or april). IDK how it installed but well now I'm stuck there.
My screen present me this:

Dunno, you'd probably have better luck asking in one of the stock-flashing topics in the General forum.

Moto E4 Easily bypass Verizon activation
Remove the phones sim card. Thats it. Its that easy. The phone then allows you to do the typical android / moto setup.

This solution worked for me on my Moto Z Droid. I removed the SIM card after starting the activation process (phone ON). The phone went immediately to the wifi log in screen and I was all set! Thanks!

Can't unlock my Phone after update

Hi at all!
After yesterdays update over WiFi (don't know which exactly, but I think it's MiUI8 6.9.8) my Redmi Note 3 (Qualcomm, 32GB) wouldn't let me unlock the device neither with fingerprint nor pattern. Before I updated it was normally unlocking. Normally I use fingerprint, so at first I thought i forgot the pattern, but after several attempts the phone went into lock mode. I am 99% sure I know the right pattern, but it won't unlock.
I already read this guide: http://en.miui.com/thread-5684-1-1.html and tried this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMAPEhH5z-8
But I have still several problems:
- USB debugging not enabled
- no recovery installed
- no root or open bootloader or anything like that
- no backup of all photos, which are on the phone itself and not on the SD card (I just came back from holidays)
- no cloud or similar backup
- Mi Pc Suite does not detect phone
- Google Device Manager states "Since Google has verified that a screen lock is already set, the password that you entered won't be needed." if I try the send a new lockscreen.
This method (with flash afterwards) could help me, I guess, but I still would loose everything: http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/guide-reboot-to-edl-mode-fastboot-test-t3398718
I have absolutely no idea how i can unlock my phone without loosing any data (especially the photos).
Please if anyone has an Idea, help me!
Same happened to me so I restored my backup, once the restore had finished I removed the finger print and pin number (I had read about this on the xiaomi Forum). Then did the update again and this time it was OK
sounds easy, how did you restore the backup?
Before restoring any backup, I suggest you hard restart your phone. long press the power button.
but if I make a Hard Reset I will loss everything on the phone.
Is there maybe a possibility to insert some sort of file or command via EDL mode, that USB debbuging will be enabled? http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/guide-reboot-to-edl-mode-fastboot-test-t3398718
No not the hard reset. I was talking about hard restart. The phone will just restart.
ahh I see, sorry my fault.
But nonetheless I din't made any backup ever with this phone.
same problem here
my phone redmi note 3(qualcomm 32gb) is also locked just yesterday ! it shows try again after 120 minutes and after the time completed it shows pattern and it will be locked again and shows the same dialouge after trying my correct password ! actually we shoud get forgot password option behind the emergency option ! please do give a reply to me if you find any solution it means a lot to me !
Well I am afraid I can't help you either... after searching for 2 days I found no solution and flashed my phone. so all data was lost...

Deleted used data with pattern block

I followed instructions to lock the bootloader/flashing of my Moto G5 Plus. I did it from bootloader, and it stated that the process would delete user data. I did it anyway. When the phone turns back on it asks me for a pattern. I enter the pattern that is set up but it says that its wrong. I try to fail so that I have the option to access through google, but that option never appeared.
I went back to the bootloader and tried to factory reset it, but it doesn't do it. I can't do anything form bootloader because the USB debugging is turned off now.
My guess is that the phone deleted all my used data, but failed to restore factory defaults. Therefore, it asks for a pattern that doesn't exist.
Can any of you think of a solution for this problem? I don't have the recovery anymore (deleted when I tried to turn my phone back to stock).
Thanks in advance!
