How do you install 3rd party apk's on Android under Chromebook?i - Chromebooks

How do I install 3rd party apps (apk's) on ChromeOS? I am running the DEV option and have no problem installing apps from the playstore.
Paul

Install ES File Explorer (or presumably any Android file explorer) and click the APK.
Edit: First go to chrome settings, click "Manage your Android preferences", then "Security" and "Allow installations from unknown sources".

is @gorei23's answer still valid? i'm on chrome os 63 (dev) and i cannot find the toggle for unknown sources. if anyone knows where it is in the new settings i'd love to hear where it now sits.

[Q] 2.2.2 (345) rooted issue. Could use expert help please...

I have a curious issue with 345 now...
I've rooted per instructions on this forum, but when I go to manage apps, The option to install third party apps, or whatever the checkbox is, is missing.
I've tried doing the *#*#307#*#, but I get the error: "Need correct passport in SD card, please check it". This prevents the EMlist from appearing.
I then tried to shortcut it, using ADW launcher, and I was able to get the EMlist app in the app drawer, but when I try to click on it to activate, it tells me file not found.
Any ideas on how to get third party apps approved?

If you are rooted. Use root explorer or any root file editor. And look for:
ro.build.APP_DISABLE_UNKNOWN=1
In the systems folder build.prop file.
Change it to =0 I found 3 entries changed them all.
Reboot and the entry shows up in the applications menu.

[Q] ICS non-market apps

I'm having trouble installing non-market apps on The Collective Unofficial 2.0 Beta 4. I go to settings - security - unknown source check and check the box to allow non-market apps. When I attempt to install an app, it goes to a screen with the permissions but I can't hit install, only cancel Anyone else have a fix/same problem?
EDIT: I tried it with both ES File Explorer and Doggie ICS File Explorer, same problem.
EDIT 2: reboot fixed everything i'm dumb.
Try 7 zip

[Q] Can't install some apps.

Well, as a title says I'm unable to install some apps (games / apps / tools). I press on .apk file, it shows permissions and such but I can only press "cancel" button, because "install button" doesn't works. Looks like something is checking if the .apk is legal or not. Also when trying to switch to package installer from task manager I can't, it's also inactive, but other open apps are working as well (can switch to them).
Anyone can help me please?
Thanks in advance!
Have you enabled installing of non-market apps?
Ah, found what caused the problem. It was Lux auto brightness.

If you won't enable it, you will get the message "non-market apps blablabla". You won't get to the point where you can press "install" and "cancel".
But the case is closed, found the solution.

[PROBLEM]Alcatel OT Idol 2S / settings has stop

Hi,
I have installed a ROM on my 6050Y, not the original one, and when i go to security, in settings, the app crash. So i can't installed unofficial apk. How to resolved it ? Maybe a command for accept other apk or somthing.
Here is the post for resolve, but i don't understand :
Faced with such a problem that does not go to the settings in security. It happens that it downloads from the forum, instead of wasting money. But because of an error in the settings you can not install applications from other sources. But this problem can be solved. Es Download the guide, go to settings, flipping naholim application settings, apps and already there, put a checkmark to remove / install applications. I tried to download the camera fv-5 pro, and so properly set. Installed, it works.)

Unbranded Android TV - No android settings app

Hi everyone,
I have an unbranded (sticker brand) Android TV that apparently has a custom firmware with almost everything modified, with the most annoying thing is that they have completely removed the stock Android settings app and replaced it with a custom settings app that has hardly any options. That prevents by from doing even basic stuff such as cleaning app's cache and data. Using ES Task Manager I've verified that they actually removed the settings app and not just the launcher link.
Is there any way I can get the native settings app into the device? Is there any alternative settings app that does a good job? I can install apks from unknown sources but no ADB (no hardware connection to PC).
Also, any rooting advice will also be appreciated but this is not critical. I have no ADB but the Android version is 4.4.2 and not really updated so exploit-based roots may work.
Bump

This thread's topic is "Android Settings" and NOT "adb sideload" etc.pp.
