Moto Z Offgrid Battery + NFC/Android Pay - Moto Z Questions & Answers

Had a chat with moto team to try and figure out if the offgrid battery mod will affect the NFC and Android Pay - You can see how removing it everytime you want to pay would be annoying, and i intended on getting the moto Z (as the force is not available in the UK) but the battery is Subpar
Motorola got back to me via email and this is the verdict:
Thank you for contacting Motorola.
This is the with reference to your concern regarding NFC usage when device is connected to MOD.
A mod should not affect the NFC signal.
Motorola cannot expect from phone users to remove their Mod or any protective back cover or case every time they want to use Android Pay.
In the Moto Z the NFC sensors are located on the back of the phone near the top left and right, just above the camera.
It is important to hold the phone in the correct position when using NFC.
It actually depends on the Mod.
It will work fine with the Moto Style Shells but they may have to remove the battery mod in order to use NFC. It depends on how thick the mod is. If you're using the speaker mod for example, NFC doesn't work.
With the battery mod it works periodically.

Is really annoying for you? How many times did u use this feature a day?
I don't think remove the mod for over a couple of seconds is a big trouble.

NFC works fine with the Incipio battery pack.

And for sh!ts and giggles I tried it with my Sound Mod and it also worked.

Also works with hasselblad

I just connected the battery extension and NFC work well

Just tried nfc payment with the JBL Speaker mod attached, worked easily and problem free.

NFC also works from the front of the phone (right where front camera is), so it doesn't matter which mod you have on the back. NFC will always work.

Works well with active NFC partners, but I can barely get a passive NFC key chip to respond through the style mod. :/

Korean 2000 MAh Battery NFC wont work (?) Anyone have one?

I just got this battery from ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/260899780576?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
NFC doesn't work. I found a picture of the Korean S2 and it seems the better contacts on the Korean model is on the opposite side as the i777. So it seem the NFC side of the battery is facing inward instead of outward when used with the i777 and I'm guessing that is why it doesn't work.
Anyone with a Korean 2000mah battery that can confirm that NFC does not work?
Very disappointing as the battery was not cheap.
I can't be the only one that bought the Korean battery for NFC and extended life.
Just need need to know if I'm correct and NFC doesn't work.
Anyone?
If you can I would try and get your money back. It sounds like it could be a knock off, as the only extended NFC battery that actually worked had the contacts as normal. Also what have you tried to do, read a tag, beam?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for the reply...
I have tried both reading tags ans beaming to my other phone. It all works with. My original battery but not the new one.
Seeing pictures of the Korean S II I noticed the contacts are on the other side thus the batter would have to be flipped to be inserted. This is why I think the NFC side faces the wrong way when incerted in the i777. Both batteries have the small rise on one side where the NFC circuits (not sure what to call them), but when you insert the new "Korean" battery that side faces in instead of out as the battery has to be flipped.
Do you have a Korean battery?

I've gone back to the stock battery for the NFC functionality. I guess I'm going to look for and buy another stock battery, if I want NFC.
I asked the seller about it and he said:
Hello. Sorry for the inconvenience.
No problem, This is a Original extended back cover and 2000mAh battery.
The EB-K1A2EBSG is the Korean version of the Export Privé, and was supposed to be compatible with all Galaxy S 2 versions.
However, in each country, depending on the carrier that does not support NFC.
Samsung Electronics has confirmed this part.
Please contact the carrier on your smartphone.
For example, AT & T, AT & T, T-Mobile, Sprint and so.
Once again, Sorry for the inconvenience.
Thanks.
When I replied that my stock battery worked fine with NFC and I don't understand how contacting my carrier (AT&T) would help. THen he replied:
Hello. Thank you for response.
Because each country, depending on the version of the NFC-compatible problem occurs.
We do not sell International Version and can not solve this part.
We did guide in the product description. Please refer.
Thanks.
So he's pretty useless.
I have read that others have bought the Korean battery, but never mention NFC functionality. So as far as I can tell if you want NFC stick to the stock battery.

the nfc wire of the Korean battery is said to be on the other side, opposite to that of the att version. Thus nfc cannot work with a korean battery inside.

Yes, seems so. Unfortunately, it was posted many times that you needed the Korean batttery if you wanted NFC. There where even several people that had ordered the Korean battery and talk of having to modify the back cover, but no one cought on to the NFC being on the other side of the batttery. At least I saw no mention until I posted it.
I'm back to using the standard battery.

I have just caught on to this thread because I just picked up some NFC tags to play around with (until now, have had no other devices/cards with NFC). I also have the Korean NFC battery, and it's not working. I'll test the stock 1650mah battery in a few days when I return home from a trip. It sucks that NFC won't work--this phone with the 2000mah battery is pretty great.
EDIT: stock 1650mah battery works with my tags. So Korean extended battery definitely does NOT do NFC.
Can you remove the front thin layer of the battery and flip the nfc wire to the back? Since its inverted can the nfc work through the front of the phone?

Thought about doing that. It's an interesting idea. And no, NFC doesn't work from the front.
Guys, what is the best battery that won't need to change the cover?
Is there any 1900 or something like that?

Random shut downs

My phone behaves very weird, initially I thought it's an issue of kernel or Rom, but after trying different ones I can't believe anymore. The randomly shut downs happens several times a day, it does not happen though when charging (never). By now I'm on jb leak and still have the issue. When it shuts down, the sreen dims a bit and then it's gone, the weird thing is that often I have to pull the battery or charge the phone before reboot is possible, the battery shows different values after rebooting, sometimes close to what was before (especially when rebooting on charger), and sometimes way off the values before. I came initially from slimrom with siyah or dorimanx kernel, I really hoped jb leak would help (also tried different kernels), but it didn't. It also seems to me that it happens more often with the sd card (32gb) and without the phone seems more stable, but still it happens from time to time. Once the screen dim (only one or two steps) and shut down even happend when in CWM recovery, is it maybe hardware related? It's very hard to find the source of the problem, anybody else experience similar issues? By the way the shutdown I have is not a proper shut down, the phone doesn't show the message "is shutting down".
Calibrating the battery didn't help either...I'm very happy for any hint, as I really don't know what to do anymore. It's it possible to log somehow what happens before lone of these shut downs?
My phone does this all the time .. no reason for it either that I can see. Have also tried a combination of stock and custom roms but it still happens.
I was hoping somebody could tell me if there is an app I could use that monitors what the phone is doing exactly before it shuts itself off ..
My issue is exactly the same as op's, my last resort is a new battery but can't do that for a few days :-\

In most cases new battery fix it.
Same Problem.
I have the exact same problem. I am arranging for a new battery to test this out. I have also noticed that a battery pull sometimes let me boot. But the phone almost always does dead towards the end of boot animation.
Please let me know if you guys worked out the solution.
I've not yet bought a new battery, cash flow problem.. But I have noticed that my current one has a slight bulge, enough to be able to spin the battery round on a flat surface. Be about a week before I can get a new one
Sent from my GT-I9100
Charge it via usb for about 3-4 hours and see what happens.
Battery Bulge
SO even i couldn't get my hands on a spare battery to test But after reading your posts, i checked mine and realised that it is also slightly bulged(based on the fact that it rotates on a flat surface). I did some research and found out the culprit. Its overcharging!! and also moisture!! as in my case.... here is why-
1. The cathode liberates lithium and which forms a metal oxide composed of another metal (commonly Cobalt - forming lithium cobalt oxide). When overcharging, lithium builds up faster than it can react and deposits on the anode. Cobalt oxide is thus formed and has a chemical structure radically different from the original lithium cobalt oxide. This weakens the structure and causes battery bloat.
2. Moisture reacts with the electrolyte salts (Lithium hexafluorophosphate) to form hydrochloric acid. It reacts with the cathode and anode sheets within the battery and causes gas build-up. This can cause the batteries to bloat
Also heat leads to gaseous expansion causing it to bloat.
I will be trying out one of my friends battery to check if the problem is resolved. I will keep you posted.
hey friends,
i had the exact same problem and getting a new battery really helped me out.
i bought the 2000mah samsung battery, everything is fine now, no random shutdowns at all now.
i hope thisnow helps you aswell.
Exactly the same problem here, below 15% its shutdown with no warning, this is also an overheat problem. My S2 is almost new, just 2 monts, what should i do? Claim a new battery at warranty?

Xperia Z2 and Oneplus one

Hey.
So i got a chance to trade my used Oneplus one for a used Sony xperia z2 like new with all accessories sealed and the dock head to head.
What do you think I should do and why?
If you have experience with both please elaborate! What's better and what's worse?!
Thx.

I never had oneplus one, but in xperia you will surely enjoy the waterproofness.
However there's one important thing while getting a xperia device, a warranty. Make sure that it's there and valid. Also before changing to xperia check whether the headphones jack works.

Surely Xperia Z2 is better.. In Oneplus, CM is Stock.. So no other option. In Z2, Stock is entirely different and its almost as fast as CM ROMs.. OnePlus is good for its price, but when u change to a Z2 its an entirely different game. You would experience a whole new level of Camera experience in Z2(With all the add-ons as well) and also battery backup is better on Z2. Performance is similar coz of the same CPU and same amount of RAM. One more advantage is Z2 is Water-resistant(IP58).. U can take it to swim, shower, etc and have lots of fun.. Also Z2 is built tough unlike Z3 or OnePlus.. U need not worry about your Z2 falling down from your hands.. U should just know how to use the device when u get it.. Use Google and Youtube and xda as well and do a lot of reading so you'll understand the device better..

Well the guy was kind enough to handle it to me for trial!
I'm using it and the software is nice, smoothly operating!
However, comparing to Oneplus One I can find the following drawbacks:
-Slow charging! WHY THE HELL ON EARTH DID SONY NOT ADOPT 2amps CHARGERS!!!
-Low volume! Especially during speaker on calls! Closed the windows and turned off the radio while driving and still barely heard my wife!

- Charging is NORMAL in z2 provided its 3200mah and it takes 2hrs n 15 mins approx for me in here from 0-100.
- Low volume on speakers are only on 167 fw which got lower compared to 4.4.2 and i am sure that it will be fixed in next update which will be Lollipop. About calls, enable Speaker Voice Enhancement and it will be more than enough to burst your ears..

135 Minutes? with the Original EP880 charger and no fast charge activated?

I used a stopwatch on my other phone to check the time.. Approx 2.40 hrs it was.. Its been around same ever since. Voltages may vary from country to country, depending on the kind of wall socket too.. I see American wall sockets are different, in here in India, we use old fashioned wall sockets, so old fashioned chargers..
I had both and sold the one plus.
Actually I had 3 OPOs, the first one was perfect and I gave it to a friend of mine (because I had allready my Z2).
The second was dead on arrival and after a fight with the oneplus support I got refunded.
The third one had the yellow band issue and I sold it on ebay because the oneplus support blocked all my request.
The Oneplus is a gread phone IF it is in perfect condition, but the support is beyond everithing.
But lets compare the facts.
Batterie lifetime: I had about 6-7h of screen on time with the one and 8-9h with the Z2.
The stamina mode is very impressive and does it's job well.
Screen: If you have no yellow band, I would call it a draw. About the same brighness and point of view.
Bands: The OPO lacks of LTE band 20 so here in Germany two of the major three carriers are NOT supported.
Camera: Sony has an OIS, the OPO not. If your bootloader is locked and your DRM keys intact, pictures in dark scenes are better with the Z2. But only with working bionZ. Rooted they about the same.
Handling: One point for the OPO here. For it's size it fits realy well. The Z2 is just like a brick.

Anyone experiencing touch screen issues while charging?

Touch screen does not work properly while charging, no matter what charger or usb port from laptop I use.
It seems to be "over" reponsive, not really possible to scroll and use it because screen takes every touch like a touch "to open" an app or something.
Really annoying.
I am on MIUI V7.1.3.0LHPCNCK, but problem was there on other rom as well.
For me too

Me too, can anyone fix this?
I don't have this issue. Checked on PC, Xiaomi powerstrip and original charger - screen seems to work as intended.
Some people on the webs said that replacing power souce helped.
As you can read in first post I used different power sources, and low power charging USB....
Same issue in my case, the phone is kind of unusable while charging! Hope it will be fixed in the next MIUI updates

Im having this issue also, but doesnt bother much now coz i only charge when i was a sleep. The battery gives me juice all day long. Good to know it has been fix in 7.2.4 at the moment im still stick with tampered rom that came with the divice but im waiting the Global Rom #will this be real
use other wall charger
iam notice when i use asus zenfone 6 charger this issue can be fixed. so i think use lower amp will fix this. but charge time will slower than original charger
Had this issue on 7.1.1. Now, on latest developer build, all works fine, and on stable 7.2.+ I heard this bug is fixed too.
Yeah when on 7.1.x, for me it's the opposite, while charging screen becomes less sensitive and I have to push harder for it to register. It's mostly fixed in 7.2.4, runnng ok in 7.2.6 now.

The first rule is you don't talk about when pointing a problem is always use default setting, so you should. There are two version of digitizer for this phone, most likely yours is the same as mine, the other one I think is sold only to European market. And always use original wall charger.

Finally left the LG club

Hey guys,
I've moved over to the one plus two.
Things I will miss are;
Losing the manual camera mode (opt's isn't as in depth as the g4's)
Easy access back buttons
Obviously battery replacement and sd card (although the 64gb opt should be OK)
Reason I swapped over are;
The annoying screen retention, it got worse and worse over time and was always there, especially the pink glow around the corners of the screen.
The screen response wasn't all that great but still wasn't the main issue.
LOCKED bootloader.... I waited and waited and have finally ran out of patients to wait... this was the deal breaker for me, besides I had one of the original models which was a bootloop ticking time bomb.
Why are your guys opinions? I really like the opt so far, but i am missing some small bits, NFC, IR blaster and fast charge but they're only toys I suppose.

I brought mine to the Media Markt Service Center because of this screen burn in and they said that they will send it to an lg service center i will post u guys immediatly what they have done or changed.... but from the g4 to the op2 is mehhh u can do it but the op 3 would have beeeeen 1903848948030984890439084 times better m8 but have fun with your new phone because if lg doesnt repairs the phone on warranty i ll smash it against a wall and i am going also for an one plus or like i said 2727272728 times before htc 10 looks very good
The only good thing about this phone is the camera.
Screen turned out to be a mess due to the ghosting problem (in practice it virtually is permanently existant for me and yes that damn orange pinkish glow) despite being highly marketed.
Logd battery drain bug.
Bootloop.
Thin light strip at the top which I guess most won't notice but it is annoying once you do (yes all G4's I saw have it, I checked every time I saw a G4 in a store and also exchanged mine once).
Love the camera, regret paying 620 Eur + ~100 Eur for accessories due to various problems...
For me it will be Note 7 or if I can make it until next year the anniversary iPhone,
just my 2 cents, cheers.
I have no display pink issues? Where can i find or see them?
