Note 7 replaced with a S7 edge and a Phree - Note 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

I dont know how many of you have heard of the Phree kickstarter project
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1958554063/phree-make-the-world-your-paper
But could this pen input device with a S7 edge and later a S8 edge make the Note line pretty much obsolete? I do concede that the S pens onboard storage and its integration with S note and some of the phones other functions give it a convience advantage... although you can somewhat use evernote to deal with the latter...
I am going to keep my note 7 as long as I can... perhaps until I get my Phree in my hands...I was a early backer...but if I have to give up my 7... I like the S7 edge.... but the S pens note taking capabilities have become apart of my life.

Nice find, but you can't apply directly to the screen with pressure sensitivity. And it doesn't store in the phone!
Still, thanks for sharing.

The Note line will never be obsolete!
Long live S-Pen!

I'm with you vilasman - I use my handy dandy S-Pen every day at work or otherwise; been rockin it hard since before they were cool.
I know you know there's no substitute for an S-Pen, but good looking on the viable alternative.

For those on the Fence!!!!

I know many people post and come here looking for guidance on whether they should keep the Note 1 or upgrade to the Note 2. And here is my honest opinion. Let me first start off by saying how much I loved the Note 1's size and that it pretty much keeps me locked into buying only a few devices based on that fact alone. And although the Note 2 is only .2 inches larger it packs enough other features to make it a great upgrade.
Now a little about Me. I am definitely a phone lover, I have had over 20 different phones in the past few years, and love trying out different brands and operating systems. But I usually like to stick to Stock and really don't mod my devices.
Let me first start off by saying had Samsung upgraded the Note 1 to Jelly bean, I probably would have the Note 1 Still. And yes, I know I could have installed Jelly Bean or had it installed by an experienced technician, but I prefer my devices to be stock. Although the Note 1 is an incredible device its hardware begin showing its age. The phone I once thought was very smooth started chugging along as more hardware intensive applications were installed on it. I would have too reset the phone every so often to help keep enough Ram free to keep things from slowing down too much, and did a few full factory wipes when things got too bad. But all in all the Note 1 is a good phone and I would still recommend it to someone who likes to mod, or to someone who wants the big screen of the note series but doesn't like the price tag of the Note 2.
Now onto why I think you will love the Note 2. Well, first If you like the Note 1 you will definitely like the Note 2, they share many things in common. Like I mentioned before the Note 2 screen is not much bigger that the Note 1. Second, Touchwiz although it has been refined more, its still touch wiz, and the software between most of the galaxy phones is very familiar which is a good thing. But, what the Note 2 improves on makes it worth purchasing. First the feature I love the most is the speed upgrade. With 2 GB of Ram this phones speeds through things and you will experience less waiting for web paged and apps to load. Second on the software side, Samsung has introduced knew features where when you take out the S pen or plug in the headphones It will take you to a special homepage where the necessary content is easily available, for instance if you plug in the head phones it takes you to a page with the music widget, this overall makes it easier to play music. A design feature that I love and is unique to the American Variants of the Note 1 is the home button. Fore some the four touch buttons might make navigating easier but I love double tapping the home button to turn the screen on especially when i'm trying to change songs while driving, and tapping once to exit an application.
Well I hope this helps someone on the fence, who is thinking but not quite sure what to do. To summarize the Note 1 is a great phone, but I believe the Note 2 packs enough new features and design elements to warrant an upgrade.
ive decided to keep my note, holding out hope for a JB update :good:
At this time I will wait for note3. We are only 5-6 months away...and I think we are going to get jelly bean upgrade soon anyway.with most of the note2 features included. There's really dont have any good reasons to get note2 now. Unless our phone broke.and u need a phone now..

Yeah I wished they would have upgraded the Note 1 to Jelly Bean already, but I got tired of waiting. But thats Googles fault they should start holding manufacturers accountable for there upgrades. Better yet manufacturers should start shipping all phones out with pure Android on them and the owner of the phone will have the choice of installing there skin or rocking the pure experience, atleast that way when an update comes out it will be available immediately and all the manufacturer would have to do is update its skin to the newest Android version, problem solved.

The Note 2 is a really good phone but in a few more months, the Note 3 is gonna be release and most of us are willing to keep our Notes til then. My girl has the Note 2 and even she says that the 16x10 screen ratio is better than the 16x9 ratio on the note 2.

The note 2 is light years ahead of this phone in every regard. This phone was like an experiment gone wrong.
If you think about it the gnote1 was the guinea pig. Notice every company is coming out with 5 inch phones now to compete with Samsung? Remember when our phone was a niche and people thought we were crazy??!

Just wondering...How was the OG Note like an experiment gone wrong?
More like the Dell Streak was a bad experiment.
The OG Note was the first 5+ inch screen phone that gained traction for Phablets. Plus bringing back the olden day stylus but making it do much more with features is damn well amazing.
Now...almost every mobile manufacturer and their grandmas are producing 5+ inch screens.

I believe AT&T still carries the OG Note so its not at the end of life like the HTC Droid DNA which got EOL within only 4 months. The Note 2 should've had 1080p full resolution...but I'm sure we'll see that on the Note 3 which will make the Note 2 obsolete. Nuff said

Proud owner of the I717 flashed to run on the Tmobile and it's MVNO's Network. Good points throughout this thread, the Dev Community has kept this device more than capable in my eyes. Had I the spare cash when the Note 2 came out, I probably would have grabbed one, but as other's have stated, the Note 3 is literally right around the corner, and will have the features that I'm looking for, namely the 1080 res, and more cores under the hood. Note 3 is my next device unless someone comes out of left field with something comparable.
I too wanted the Note 2 when it first came out. But since the Note 3 or Samsung's Mega phones are on the way, I'll just wait. Merry Christmas to me.

Well.......since getting the note 2, I can say without a doubt that it's simply a great device. Battery life is superb, and function with the quad core chip is nimble and effortless.
However, with every device comes it's setbacks, and the note 2 is no exception, with a borked up browser, weak glass screen, and resolution that is "NOT" improved over the note 1, just to name a few of the issues I've found.
The note 1 was a breakthrough device. And Samsung created a whole new user base with it. It's life is not even close to over, as the device is still sold in several markets world wide, and refurbished devices are flowing like water from Texas.
I love the note 1, and it will always hold a unique place in the handset world. so those of you who want to move over to the note 2, go ahead. It's a great device, but so is the note 1 in many ways.
Enjoy them both while they last, as we are sure to see a third version in the works soon. But for now, don't worry about it, as it's only a rumor......and we all know about rumors, and how they end up much different than the reality we live with.
Happy flashing....g
Samsung would be a fool if they didn't release another version of the BEST PHABLET on the market! It was probably the 2nd or 3rd Best selling Android last year. For all the doubters.
.Trust me...we'll see the Note 3!

Greg, can you elaborate on the weak glass screen? Is it flimsy compared to the 717 or has it broken on you?
Thanks bud!
I'm thinking of downgrading the screen size and going for a HTC ONE. Having a nexus 7, a surface pro, and a computer makes me feel like the galaxy note is neglected a lot and there's really no need for such a device now. I still want a smartphone, just not one this big since the nexus 7 is with me anyway. Oh well, to each his own. I did try and end up not buying the note 2.

I kid, and yet I dont, 16:9 drives me nuts! So nuts in fact that I refuse to buy ANY laptop/desktop monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio! Sure the laptop's are quickly becoming outdated, but ill switch to a tablet with 16:10 before I upgrade to a laptop with 16:9
A true 7" tablet phone (not phone tablet/phablet) with 16:10 before Id give up my GNote for the GNote 2 with 16:9! Well, that or a swap with my i717 for an n7000!

So I'm still debating the Note 2 or the S4. The size of the Note is great because I read a lot and I like the..... well I just like the size. The S pen is somthing that I think I would use a lot. But I've heard that it gets boring after a month. I understand that the hardware is better in absolutely every respect on the S4. But I still don't know. Are you happy with your Note 2

Honestly my advice would be go to store and check them both out side by side so you can actually see and feel the differences. I personally like the size and the s pen on the Note 2 and wouldn't consider an upgrade until possibly the Note 3. I've had mine for a few months and have yet to get "bored"

Seriously, do you think you won't get "bored" with S4 or One after 2-3 months max? The initial "wow" factor wears off for almost all phones. But for me, it's been actually the opposite, personally. This is the only phone which managed to grow on me.
Rest of the phones, after the "honeymoon period" gets boring too, trust me. But with Note II, you're left with a good screen with more screen real estate and excellent battery life. So even if it gets boring, you'd be left with an excellent, stable device that you can trust as using your daily driver. And we've still had users who switched back to Note 2 after going to HTC One et al for the same, which in itself speaks volume IMO

I find after a month or more of use, that I'm using the pen more and more. I take pics and annotate them all the time now, for personal notes, or to send to others. I use it to take all my job-related notes (I work in IT) and always have them with me, 24/7. Definitely not bored!
My Nexus 7 is suffering from separation anxiety, however.
I use my SPen to take notes in meetings almost everyday. I can't see a reason to ever get another phone without Spen.
I've only had mine for a couple of days but I already know that this phone is going to stick with me for the long haul.
I come from the old school days of the stylus with my first being the original palm Pilot 1000 and the last resistive touchscreen being an Sch-i730
I loved that phone to death even though the call quality and battery life was horrid. When the touchscreen went out on it I died a little inside. Capacitive touch screens took away the enjoyment of a stylus and even third party ones just didn't do it for me. With the note II it brought back the same feeling I had with the i730 that died on me 5 years ago.
Don't underestimate the S-Pen's capabilities, the Wacom technology combined with Samsung's extensive software makes it a very powerful device. The phone is huge and you don't really grasp the size until you see a working one with the screen on. That can swing either way on the pro's and cons list depending on the users personal requirements. for me though sometimes it feels too excessive (phone calls) but mostly I am thankful for it. Overall though I am glad it is so big.
I highly suggest you get the note II first and take it for a test drive and try to use the S-Pen as much as you can. If you don't like it then go exchange it for the S4. The S-Pen is a unique feature only found on the note and best try it now then never at all.
I have not been on these forums in a while (years) because I took an apple cruise. Was there user reset on inactive users or something?
great phone!
Note 2 or 3 ONLY!
The size still bothers me at times. I have smaller hands and will cramp a little if I hold my phone for longer periods of time.
Other than that... no regrets. Watching Dish on it is awesome! Also... other Animes and videos. I don't use the spen too much so I can't comment on that. Overall best android phone that I've had. I am still stock and unrooted and super bloated but it is snappy and it works exactly as I want it to. I've had it for 2 months now.
one of the best phones out their and my personal favorite.
Yes. happy. Hopefully the Note 3 is thinner with less bezel and a bigger screen.

The S-Pen's utility for me is not in writing notes or making drawings. It's in the fine control it offers (pinpoint clicking, etc) and the gestures you can do with it...screenshots, image clipping, and more. And if you buy GMD Spen Control, you can make as many custom gestures as you want.

+1 on this too by the way. I can't explain how much it helps me from those annoying "misclicks" - and even expanding some items with the hover like feature. I use it mostly for typing and mostly browsing. Note taking/drawings is a major plus, but I use it mainly for browsing and typing rather.
I played with my boss's S4 the other day...it's a nice phone and looks a bit higher end than the note 2, but the only real difference you will notice day to day is the size. If you can manage the larger size, the additional screen space (plus the s-pen) make it a pretty easy choice. If you want a smaller device, the S4 is a great phone. Felt really solid, fast, etc. I for one love the bigger screen and could probably never go smaller again.
I've the note 2 since March and I came from the GS3. I've had the note 10.1 since the Summer, & that's What made me go for the note 2. qm So happy I did! And I'm definitely looking forward to hearing what the Specks of the note 3 will be. I wasn't even tempted, When the HTC one or the S4 came out because of the S pen! I can't live without it! I too use it at meetings to take notes and to jot things down quickly! It's great not having to carry pen and paper!

honestly ill sacrifice removable battery for waterproofness
lots of companies make extended battery cases that can be used if the battery doesnt fare well
BUT it should be expected to not have a removable battery on an HTC device now days, all their phones are built unibody

I'm freaking out man! Definitely getting this or the note 3. s dragon 800 is looking mighty tasty. If the HTC has an SD card I'm kind of leaning that way. My logical side tells me my i717 running carbon/ uber is more than fine for anything i do. But I like new shiny stuff so #$%# logic.
Non removable batteries can be shaped anyway they want. That's why the Z Ultra is so thin. As for the HTC I like the Speakers and the Screen size. But the triluminous on the Z Ultra is part of Sony's 4k technology and thats nice. I just don't like the door hatches to the ports and it may be to big for my pocket. As for Note 3 all I've heard was Snapdragon 800, 2.5 GB ram, and a new design format but I think its going to look like a bigger S4. We'll find out in Sept for the Unpack Event.

It might be true that the average user doesn't use the SPen, but its also true that most people don't spend the time it takes to learn how to use it right. It's extraordinarily efficient to use with the gestures and handwriting-to- text. Just try using S Note with your finger. You'll get much better results with the S Pen haha.
Most think of drawling when it comes to the Note...but performance, screen size, and screen quality have always been the major attraction for all users with the Note.
The Note 3 is shaping up to be a monster of a device, and I find it unlikely that the major players will release anything close to it in the near future. HTC already made their move this year, Motorola doesn't seem to make high end phones anymore, and LG just doesn't have the mind share or reputation (although they may be a bit more deserving since the latest Optimus/Nexus combo release).

Anyways, I think that 99.999% of the geeks I know wouldn't buy a Sony unless the other companies stopped making smart phones. The latest round is impressive. But I need a bit more encouragement that Sony has truly changed before I get anywhere near any of their products. The Xperia line ruined it for me.

To be honest I wasn't familiar with the Ultra Z. That's sexy too, imo. And I couldn't care less about a snapdragon 800, or even a 600. I game on my device for maybe 30 seconds at a time -- that's what consoles and my HTPC are for -- so I really only need a processor capable of running baconreader and Chrome.
And, fair enough with the spen. I've never bothered learning what it could do, which is why I asked. Your reply almost makes me debate putting a samsung ROM back on just so I can play with it for once.

I game on my device for maybe 30 seconds at a time -- that's what consoles and my HTPC are for -- so I really only need a processor capable of running baconreader and Chrome.
And, fair enough with the spen. I've never bothered learning what it could do, which is why I asked. Your reply almost makes me debate putting a samsung ROM back on just so I can play with it for once.

sounds like there is no need for you to upgrade other than getting an upgrade.I do most my gaming on a pc also. with faster SOC comes more capabilities. Windows xp is insanely fast on a P4 2gb of ram and a SSD. But you cant run dx11 on it. Like any upgrade .. you are going to be able to do stupid things faster. Sooner rather than later the smart phone will be your main processing device. You will just hook it up do all sorts of accessories(tv,gamepads,VR headsets etc etc) This just totally turned into a small rant. I by no means dont think you already now this. I'l move on now...Rant over.
Oh definitely not, and definitely to the rest. I don't need an upgrade due to need of faster stuff; however, marketing is a *****, and I know I'll bite the bullet sooner or later. To be honest, the only thing I'm truly wanting, when I take out the "the new stuff is flashy" factor, is better battery life. Sporting a 5200mah battery just to hang with the Wife's note 2 is ridiculous. It makes me wonder what one of those 9000mah batteries could do on her Note 2.

HA. I feel your pain. I got i717 and the wife has the note 2. I'm constantly blabbling on about rom this, kernel that, about how awesome my phone is with carbon/uber. I usually only get out of her.. my phone is better.
Still a fan of the og screen ....I heard screens are very similar anyways

He he. I was a bit burnt by the time I posted that...spent all day fixing S3's. A small business client if mine likes to root his devices, and when he couldn't copy and paste due to a stock sprint software bug, he decided to wipe them. Finding instructions to do so on a random thread here. Needless to say, they wouldn't boot....because a wipe isn't what he thought it was.
And although the Ultra Z could be a bit more ergonomic...I suppose its just the sharp corners and the über-bad build quality, and update/support history of the Xperia line (x10 and pre-x10 days) that has haunted me and so many of my friends that makes me feel yucky even looking at it. I haven't gotten a chance to hold the Z Ultra, but assuming the build quality is good (it likely feels solid, judging from the dimensions and slimness alone), the only thing that dissuades me is...again, the corners, which makes the phone look like its a couple years old already. I'd really love to play around with one though.
At one point I was looking at their tablets, but again, square corners make your spankin' new device look like it's an AARP founding member, and aren't very forgiving on the hands.
I still maintain that the screen, and internals are what makes the Note a compelling device, but the Z Ultra isnt a slouch.
I do like the buttons....
I'll be sticking with my Note until I see what the Note 3 has to offer. I'll decide then between the Note 3 or S4 (is the Snapdragon 800 S4 coming to the US?), mainly because I know what I'm getting, and, I'm a fan of the over-saturated AMOLED displays.

[Q] z ultra and galaxy gear

I am switching form note 3 to z ultra. But I have only one problem. I would like to keep my galaxy gear.
So is anyone find way how to conect gear and zu? I look every way but I didn't find any information. So guy's you are my last chance.
No way to connect those devices. The Galaxy Gear is a very specific gadget made to work only on a Samsung environment. Furthermore, it just work with the Note 3 and S4 at the moment, until Samsung figures it out and makes S3, and Note 2 compatible.

I've got my ultra since it came out and I wish to have the g. Gears too but no one has ever make the gear to work with any other phone besides samsung devises. I don't know but some one needs to work on this.
The gear drivers are Samsung owned and they don't release them to devs or the community, and on the first gen at least, I very much doubt they will. This is one further step closer to their proprietary ecosystem they've been planning for so long. They need to be baked into the rom, hence why there's a rom update to the phone when they make it compatible.
Sorry dude, unless your on a new high end Samsung device the gear is useless.

Needs touchwiz framework.. Someone may hack it like they did with other touchwiz framework apps (like they did with svoice) but doubt it will be for niche device like zu.

It is unfortunate that Samsung would do that. I like the watch and I think that they could sale more watches if it was compatible with any bluetooth phones with the gears app. Shame on you samsung.........

Yeah I'm sure that all the g.Gear requries is a touchWiz base... I'll ask if Zoosh is keen to port touchwiz for the Ultra... as he ported the Sony base for the Galaxy Note...
However... its touchWiz, and I for one am happy I've moved on... anyway... i'll ask. He may have a spare few months! LOL
Let's hope someone manages to reverse engineer the drivers/framework and bundles it up as an Xposed module. That would be the best IMO.

You can root the Galaxy Gear and use it with the ZU, that's what I've done. You won't have the same native app support but there are many third party apps that provide similar functionality. If you share your internet connection via bluetooth you can just setup your email accounts and weather app on the Gear and Tablet Talk gives SMS notification/reply. It will still work as a bluetooth headset without any additional apps.

How is it better for him to buy something else that has basically the same specs and the exact same capability as the device he already owns?
Pretty sure when I was browsing the HTC one forums someone managed to get some galaxy gear functions working with HTC one

Cheaper and not device specific?
In any case I do have the ZGPAX with my Ultra and it is sweet and powerful but guess this is OT.

But he already has the Gear, so the cost is $0. And once it has been rooted the Gear works with every device just like the ZGPAX.
Does not negate the fact that it is cheaper. Sell the Gear, the the ZGPAX and have a nice chunk of $$$ left.
In any case, I think he just wants his Gear to work so this is not really on topic I guess.
Nothing comes close to Gear Watch..
I have owned Zpax, U Watch, Gear Neo, Gear 2, LG G Watch R, Asus Zen Watch (current). Nothing ccomes close to Gear 2. Don't trust the other sellers pointing you to non branded crap like Zpax or Azz watches. I tried them all and I settled on Asus even though I like gear 2 it doesn't work on my Z ultra. I used to get so many compliments when I had that watch. My two cents and my opinion, no need to bash or critic. Take it or leave it. Thank you.

S8 S-Pen Compatibliity

Anyone try using the note 5's s-pen on the new display of the s8 and s8+ due to the rumors that it could have included one back in January? That would be pretty cool if it works and we can get a case with a compartment for the pen.

Got 4 Note7 s-pens here but no time to hit the best buy! If that changes I'll report back

The Note series has a special screen. If it does work, it probably won't work well.
"Users that wish to gain S Pen features not available to the Galaxy S7 in the past wont have much luck. Without the digitizer hardware of the Note 7, any S Pen from any previous Note device won’t work. Users will be able to use a standard stylus, but it wont quite be the same.."
it either works perfectly or it doesn't work at all.
and on the S8 it definitely doesn't work, even the C-Pen doesn't work(old high precision capacitive stylus for galaxy tab and S series devices)
it's going to be a big adjustment for me, coming from a Note 4.
Tried it with my note edge pen... No luck!
did any of you install the Required SPen APK?
if not you may have the same results trying to use the SPen with a chalk board.
