Data retrieval - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok long story short, i threw my phone at the wall and now it wont turn on. Im not too bothered about the phone, ive had it a while and want a new one anyway, however upon removing the micro sd i discovered that all my pics and vids from the last few years are stored on the phone.
As i cant power it on (i get a constant red led if i connect it to anything) i cant see it on the pc to pull data off, anyone have any suggestions for me to get them pics and videos?
I've took it apart but cant see anything obvious to repair, all i can think of now is putting my motherboard into a working z2

The LED is not meant to stay constantly on when connecting the device to something whilst off. It is supposed to go off after a few seconds. That doesn't sound good.
Have you checked to see if you can boot into fastboot mode, or even flash mode? May not help in this case, but if that functionality is working then the device is not dead just yet.
Also, make sure all needed drivers are installed on your computer. The device will not be picked up properly without them. Install them manually if not.
If you can place the motherboard into a working Z2, which will eliminate many potential areas of failure provided it starts working, then that is the only way you can retrieve your data.
It's impossible to retrieve data stored on built-in storage on a dead device, so what you are asking has no straightforward answer.
Next time, please throw significantly cheaper items at walls, and not modern, uncommon smartphones.

last bit is brilliant advice, problem with that is automated services annoy me and the phone is in my hand already when i gotta put up with them lol
I cant get it to power on at all, not fastboot, flash mode nothing.
I know putting the mainboard into a working z2 might not work but i figure thats my best chance, i think it can be done with jtag tools, but not willing to spend a few hundred quid for something ill probably never use again..... I've also seen some eMMC readers available, but as that involves removing the eMMC chip from mainboard id be even more stuck if it didnt work

Suggestions before placing 8525 for sale

I bought the phone thinking i could fix it... i have tried all the suggestions on resolving white screen... i have attempted to load Schap's cooked rom 4.22 and not luck... the phone powers on, syncs up i can access the files thru windows explorer... it charges... but still just shows the white screen...
Now after multiple attempts at loading the rom, i was able to get the today screen up once, but then it went away...
I have the phone, battery, charger, usb cable and software cd....
Since i can access the files thru explorer... is there anything i can do that way to see if i can get this phone working? maybe some files i can delete or replace...
I have tried the hard reset and soft resets adn nothing helps..
when i try to load the TNT rom when it gets to the part that its going to begin loading, it kills the activesync and then complains that its not connected or has been disconnected...
Anything else i can try?
Read this page, maybe you'll find the necessary help.

Two things to try if you've not...
1) Open it up (it's quite rugged!) and check the screen connector is plugged in OK. A lot of white screens are simply loose cables apparently. There is a thread discussing this here. Also Mikechannon is your hardware guru and his website has some excellent information about disassembly/reassembly that should help you out.
2) Try using the application "mymobiler" (freeware) - which allows you to see your hermes screen on your desktop PC when connected over activesync. I've put a mirror of the setup file here until 23/01 as the www.mtux.com site was timing out occasionally while I was looking this up for you (might be my end tho!)
Finally - I don't recommend attempting to flash any more ROMs until the screen issue is updated as you can't see whats going on and there is a risk you could end up with a weirdo hybrid-type brick
Good luck - Hope you get it working and if all else fails (I know you don't want to hear this) but I'm sure some of us here would be interested in slipping you a few quid for spares if the worst came to the worst...
I had almost given up on the phone once i was offered money for it.. i originally took it apart and only checked the connections on the main motherboard.. and that didnt work.. after reading the HTC tech manual and noticing that the LCD also had a cable that connected to a slot and not physically part of the screen i decided to open the LCD casing also.. and sure enough it was the LCD screen cable.. unless you really paid attention you would have never notice.. but i could see a slight angle on the cable connection, it was barely lose on one corner.. i re-seated the connection closed it up and less than 5 minutes the phone was working...
THANK YOU!!!!
I was able to fix a phone i bought for $75 and loaded TNT rom on it lastnight.. and have been customizing it the rest of the night and today...
Funny part is the guy who sold it to me, said it only need to have the ROM reloaded on it..
THANKS again for the suggestions and links... i have saved and booked marked everything..
I guess i spoke to soon... after posting that i was on my way with a nicely used $75 phone. The screen started to fade white....
Using My Mobiler i can see my desktop of the phone.. i can access and do everything... but the screen is white.. and it still functions as far as touch screen, so if guess at where things are i can tap on them and the phone reacts...
So now im back to square 1 with the phone, but atleast this time i know that it is functional software wise just cant see anything..
I opened it up 2 times since it went out and re-verified all connections.. everything has been reseated.. still no improvement.. if im lucky, it will come up to display but once i start tapping around on the screen it will slowly fade out to white...
I have noticed that alot of people have mentioned that after getting the white screen they load another rom on the phone and works for a while then starts to act up again.. can someone tell me how they are loading a rom on a phone with a white screen?
I mean i know the phone works besides the display since i have My Mobiler i can see and do anything i want on the phone.. but thats only good with a active connection thru activesync...
I dont want to try and reload a rom on the phone and mess it up more than it already is..
The screen will display for a few seconds sometimes.. and then fade out to white..

Is it sooo dead?

Hello, my wife's S3 seems to have deceased. It won't power up, won't get to download or recovery modes. When i plug it to my PC, i hear the sound of usb connection, but its nowhere to find it. While still connected, i try enter download mode, and i hear the USB disconnect/connect sounds again. I don't mind that it's dead since i just bought my wife a brand new LG G3 (i would happy to use it a an experimental phone though), but just yesterday she added several new coworkers contacts (they dont appear in her google account). Also i'm desperate to retrieve many photos from there (no kinky ones and never uploaded to the cloud)
Is there any way to restore these data somehow? The poor phone was already pretty beaten up with cracked digitizer (operational), and this morning it fell twice from my wifes pocket while in the gym . But it operated for a half an hour and then deeeead. Is it due to the beating, or is it the SDS? (it was running 4.3.3 i think, unrooted, all factory updates)
I don't mind screwing with its internals as long as i revive anything i can
If you can't bring it to download mode then sorry, no more chance for you, just a repair.
And it can be saved if eMMC isn't dead, if it is, then, well, no luck for you my friend.

G5 Screen fail. Digitizer fine, but display dead? WTH?

Got a unique issue with my G5. Have had it in a Lifeproof case for awhile now.
Last night, it spent most of the time riding in my back jeans pocket where it always does. I've had zero issues with sitting in the car, and whatnot....as I'm not a hipster that wears tight jeans that could possibly damage the device. Anywho, I got out of the car, dropped the phone into my pocket, and went about my evening at work - which involved ZERO sitting.
I go to pull out the device to make a call, verify my fingerprint, and nothing. Well, almost nothing. Its as if half of my screen is "disconnected", and the other half is out of sync. I've attached a youtube video to see what I'm talking about. ( https://youtu.be/357GcnV2-9Y ) My first thought was the ribbon cable became partially dislodged from its plug on the motherboard. I first tried flexing the phone, to see if it magically worked, or changed. Nada.
This am, brought it to the VZW store, expecting a quick fix, but since it shows no damage at all I got nothing but a warranty replacement request, and a promise it would be delivered within 3 days. Thats not good enough, as I use this thing for work. So I looked at alternatives...
I've browsed the teardown on ifixit, and was surprised at its simplicity. I pulled it apart, and re-seated the display ribbon cable, to no avail. Still apparently toast.
I've managed to get through the boot up pattern security I set up, and the phone is active. I just cant get it into MTP mode to copy my crap as I'm guessing I need to pull down and click on the notification to switch it.....which, of course, I cannot see. Basically, I just want to get my crap out of the internal storage before I ship this one back. Obviously I'm going to wipe it with the Android Device Manager before I deactivate, but still would like to salvage something.
Anybody have any thoughts? Or maybe is there a second ribbon cable somewhere that wasnt mentioned in the teardown?

I have no advice as to how to get your files off, I'm sorry about that.
But I wanted to confirm that this isn't an isolated occurrence and it happened to me! I also babied my phone and never dropped it and it was always in a case.
I don't know what to blame as the cause, I'm hoping just bad quality control. I was hoping it's not due to flexing because it's not as sturdy due to the bottom of the phone not being physically attached.
Photos of the same thing on mine: https://imgur.com/a/eEAmA
This happened 15 days after I bought it and Best Buy returned it for a new one which three weeks later started bootlooping which was a whole fiasco to get repaired and took over a month. LG's quality control is horrible.
+1 as I am having this issue on a Sprint G5, sent to LG for repair after Sprint was no help. 29 days after purchase.
Hello. A few quick searches on my part found a thread here on the forums for controlling your device from your PC. It also includes a script to run when your phone is in recovery to enable USB Debugging. Try it out ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786395 ). Hopefully I have helped. If you want to just salvage files, you can enable USB Debugging and pull everything through the USB. However, if you want to still use your apps, or harvest app data, or even use titanium backup or the like to make a complete backup to transfer to the new device, enable USB Debugging, then control your phone. Follow the above thread's instructions to do so.
Thank you for your time,
Xzanah

Data recovery from damaged (dead) phone.

I was given this phone to recover data from for a friend. She doesn't remember her unlock because it's sat forgotten in a drawer for ages now while she's used two or three other phones since. After her dog passed she remembered they have pics and vids of it on this phone and she's desperate to have them back.
The screen is badly damaged and the ribbon is ripped. Replacements are a bit more costly than she is willing to pay, but also the battery is completely dead; maybe needs to be replaced too.
So there's no way that I know of to interact with this device.
Is there a way I can connect this to PC to power it and recover data?
Replacement battery and screen costs for a phone she won't use after data recovery just isn't realistic.

Hard Bricked S3 - recover or delete internal storage?

Hi,
My S3 screen doesn't come on even with new battery and have tried loads of apps on my laptop - there used to be sound and could see leds's but that has now stopped.
I tried Kies and samsung drivers amd wondershare but it is not recognised on PC. I have someone who wants to borrow it just for its physical appearance but in case my personal date can be recovered by someone else is there a way to permanently damage the internal flash storage so that it is impossible to recover? Which part do I need to damage once opened up?
Many thanks.
After looking into this I think it is the EMMC chip which is the flash storage so I need to remove this I think which contains my gmail and contacts and whatsapp msgs. Can anyone confirm this is correct?
It would be easier to change the password on your accounts..
Before you write it off, remove the battery, plug it into a reliable charger and try holding vol+/- and home while tapping power for 1 second. It must be done WITHOUT the battery in. Try different key combo's. It matters not which combo's, you're just after a response in any form.
If you don't get a response from it then you wont need to worry. The phone will be unrecoverable in its current state, meaning that if anyone wants to waste a lot of time to break into the emmc your data must be worth A LOT of cash. I highly doubt you're hiding government secrets so I doubt anyone would waste time on a "no mark" (no offense intended).
If you were planning on removing the emmc with a soldering iron you might find it much easier to just dismantle the shell of the phone and ship it to the person who wants it, keeping the hardware.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Thanks for the reply. Tried button combo as you stated but no response. Will try remove the emmc.
