MTCD 2gb RAM upgrade - MTCD Hardware Development

Calling for interest in upgrading MTCD SOM to 2gb, through group buy. Please see this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/android-auto/mtcb-hardware-development/2gb-ram-t3483677

I am interested in a module, but not BGA RAM chips, as I cannot solder BGA.

I have zero soldering skills as well. So I'll look forward to hearing how it works out for someone who tries it
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

interested. let me know how to proceed.
sent by my S7edge

I have Erisin MTCD 8", let me know how to proceed

I'm interested , also I've soldering skills but that I can't solder that kind of chip without a proper machine.....so I let it pass

Guys - read the linked post containing full details on how to order / confirming interest in that thread.
Note that you will need to find a repairer/rework to solder the BGA chips.

The 2GB Upgrade was also available at AliExpress from witson, but I think that it is no longer available. Why don't you buy a 4GB upgrade? It's the same except more memory...

RAM UPGRADE

Does anyone have information on upgrading the RAM to 64 Meg, last time I looked here there was some info on it but it seems to have gone
I would also like to know where to purchase the RAM Chips.
Try www.expansys.co.uk, they advertise two upgrades, 64Mb and 128Mb, although the 128Mb one is not available yet.
Yes I had seen the Expansys upgrade at £94.43 but I would prefer to buy the chip and do the upgrade myself, if possible.
THe problem is where to buy the right chip... and then install
Expansys are getting their upgrades from PPCTECH in the States, it might be worth contacting them for chips.
where to buy XDA memory cards from
You can buy extra memory from store like Dixons, but if you do want a RAM update then you cane go to a O2 Store and they will sell you 32 MB Ram update so that you have 64 MB for £30 or so. this is quite good
if you need any more information email at [email protected]

I contacted PPCTECH in the states and got this trply from their Tech Support;
Hi Angus,
The XDA is one of the most difficult units we upgrade. It is surface mount
and not user installable.
I would suggest going through expansys.com.
Best Regards,
Leonard
So it looks like we will have to wait until expansys get their act together
My phone has now been at Expansys for, um, just coming up to 3 weeks. And the parts still haven't arrived. I made the order in January, and waited several weeks before they sent me the details of what to do, and now I've done it I had expected them to have the parts in already.
Just a point to note. The maximum RAM an XDA will accept is 64Mb. If you get the 128Mb upgrade, 64MB will be allocated to RAM, the remaining 64Mb will be used as a virtual storage card - however, it will still be wiped after a hard reset / flat battery.
Best not let the battery go flat then!!!!
I am still tempted to wait for the 128Mb rather that the 64Mb. Unless the price of 512Mb SD cards comes down a bit.

[Q] Lenovo ideapad K1

Dear Friends,
I didn't see Lenovo ideapad K1 title in this forum.
I bought it from amazon and I want to start this device discussion from here but I don't know that how can I open it?
If anybody know this issue please help me.
and waiting new lenovo ideapad K1 users here.
I just recieved mine yesterday. I was surprised too when I came here and didn't find a dedicated section... I'll be glad to share whatever it is that I know about the device so far :-D
me too. happy with this K1. brought today.
start playing from 7pm -10am battery level from 42% drop to 21%.
So I would think the battery life should not be the problem.
Did anyone here root this K1. if yes, how ?
Thanks
It doesn't seem so unfortunately. Guess we'll have to wait a little more...
+1
waiting new lenovo ideapad K1 users here
Could any Developer explain how to even try to create a root? I am willing to try to figure it out but not sure where to start.
What files need to be unlocked for superuser and busybox to be installed?
If it helps OTA Roms are able to be flashed now, and the bootloader is unlocked.
Lenovo Ideapad Troubles
This a fix for US ideapad users who have had some issues with the software and performance of the device. If you are one of those folks this has helped a lot of people though GPS issues still prevail for some.

Ideapad K1 has been rooted!!!
I've found out last night that the guys on Rootswiki have managed to root the ideapad k1 tablet. Although it's a little bit "messy" as they refer to it but root has been achieved which I think is a huge step . You can take a look at the original post and see for yourself ;-).

I'm still waiting for the recovery, before rooting.
internal storage problem?
I also have a Lenovo k1 32gb and I have noticed that it is not reading all of the 32gb. I know it is a 32gb internal but sys info only reads about 25gb total space. so I was wondering if anyone was experiencing any thing similar to this?
This is the usual free space.
The biggest issue for me is the performance using the 3.2.1 OTA, lower than other tablets with similar hardware and the lack of support to Tegra games. You can't buy them on market because lenovo didn't mark/pay rights to this model.
Thanks but I'm not talking about free space. I'm talking about the total space. I only have 9gb free the total space is 24.91 not 32gb like i payed for. I took a pic of screen but having troubles uploading from my tab. Thanks for.you're reply if you have any other ideas I would love to hear.
I've bought it today.
Little surprised too... no threads about Lenovo IdeaPad K1 =( Will be waiting for our developers! Looking forward to find any stuff =)
My experience with 3.2.1 is completely different. When running Vellamo benchmarking, the K1 outscores the Samsung Galaxy and the Acer Iconia 500. I can access Tegra supporting games via Amazon and Android Market.

For INTERNAL storage, mine also indicates 24.91 GB free. My guess is that the 7 GB is storing the firmware image and other goodies. With all my apps installed, plus a couple of audio books and pictures, I have 21.97 GB available.
I brought Ideapad K1 32GB un-open from a friend here in australia. Anyone investigated buying/using the Android Thinkpad n-trig digitizer pen for note taking on the Ideapad. Don't know if the duo-sense drivers are built-in or not? Seems like the digitizer pen communicates via bluetooth.
I have K1 16GB but it is displaying only 12GB. RAM is only 750 MB not 1GB. Im a bit pissed off, wanted to enjoy my new toy and now i have to go trough endless warranty process..
Apparently, some of you are not too tech savvy. Your tablets are find in regards to internal storage and ram. You do realize that the OS is loaded on the device and requires resources. What you see under available ram and internal storage is what you can use. And what does it matter how much ram is available?! The OS and apps know how to allocate memory. The only concern should be why this tablet can't access all the apps like other Android tablets.

Wrong internal memory size

Hi all!
I am a new HAM2 L03 owner, I purchased the phone used on eBay, but I've seen something curious, the internal memory is displaying as it was 8 gb, but this phone is supposed to have 16 gb internal memory, can you guys help me with this issue?
I'm attaching a screen shot of the internal memory.
There was an 8Gb model sold at WalMart for a short period of time. This is probably one of those. I can tell you it cannot be updated to Lollipop, yet. Check your eBay auction and see if it was advertised as 16Gb. It is actually most likely the reason it was sold off. Sorry for the bad news.

I was under the impression that it was the exact same as the 16 gb and the only difference was the 8 gb storage. Not sure, though, as I don't have the 8 Gb.
Thank you two for your help! according to one image on the link that xordos provided, the Mate 2 Slim has a 3740 mAh battery compared to the regular 3900 / 4100 mAh battery that the HAM2 has, I think it's not a very big difference. I've been using the cellphone since thrusday and I coulndn't be happier, I don't think I can go back to another cellphone that wouldn't provide at least the same battery life and doesn't have the same screen size. I payed $120 USD for it, so I won't complain to the seller (I think this is a good price) if someone is reading this and has doubts about the slim version, my opinion is if you get a really good price, go for it!!!
Curious. How much room does that leave you for apps? If you find its not enough. Root plus link2sd app works great.

Just got in running in a Hot Audio MCU 1.93 MTCD unit (running Malaysk) in an Outlander 2016 PHEV.
I have the full face unit, not the 7 inch replacement but the 8inch full panel replacement.
I have a friend out of the phone business who solders IC's for me and aked him to do it.
It's hard work.
I paid him 30 euro's (because it's not commercial) but normally he would charge around 100,- for a job like this.
After refitting the unit in car it wouldn't but.
Mistake 1: I attached the flat cable of the screen on the wrong conector (9/10 inch instead of 8 inch).
After that, I connected it to the right one. Unit still dead.
Kept pressing the poer button, unit flashed 3 times (reset) and booted just fine!
And wow, what a difference!!!
Finally can use the unit without lag/delays/crashes.
Tried Google maps and Sygic wich didn't run good with 1GB and used it without any problems!
It was quite an ivestement:
60 dollars for 2GB
30 euro's + 2 times 4 euro's shipment
So all together around 100 dollars to upgrade only 1GB (from 1GB > 2GB), but glad I did it...!

Cool !
Really need to get round to getting mine fitted.
TLDR - fantastic - solves app slow downs/lag and UI response (lag) issues.
I can say having just had the memory replaced with a 2GB upgrade, the upgrade resolved stuttering and slow downs. Prior to upgrading lag was typical and pronounced at cold boot. Having to wait for the device to settle before opening navigation was annoying.
The upgrade was noticable from first boot - immediately responsive UI, able to open multiple apps such as google maps, igo, youtube all without any lag whatsoever.
Question is - is it worth doing now that there is the potential to swap out the SOM rk3 to rk5 with 2gb - this is yet to be proven but the video I saw on youtube posted by hotaudio suggests this is a direct swap.
In my opinion the upgrade is probably not cost effective if a new SOM RK5/2gb board is available or where there is zero tax/import duty for a new unit.
If you have access to professional, skilled BGA soldering at a low cost then probably. It is a risk and will need to make this assessment for your situation.
All that said - go for it! Pic to follow.

I did point that out when @dsa8310 posted about Klyde's octacore units back in October, but I ve not heard anything about them since . . . til your post. Back then it was speculation whether youd be able to swap the SoM as you could with the RK3066 to the RK3188, good to hear that you can. From what I ve read the octacore units also have a different, combined wifi and BT module, wonder if that ll work ok on the RK3066/RK3188 motherboards.
I d say the xtra RAM was more cost effective than a new SoM, in 2015 the cost fro an RK3188 SoM was about $90-120, not sure what it is now. Think I d stick with the RK3188 and 2GB . . . on the other hand MM would be better than L, hmm.
I guess the RK3188 night get an upgrade to MM, the RK3066 got an upgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 after the RK3188 came out.
EDIT: the ones in HOTaudio's video are MTCD, thinking about it yours is too isnt it ? My comments were re: MTCB/C units.

Hi,
Yes MTCD - here's the video swapping out an MTCD SOM
https://youtu.be/8smMyEOMYU8
Quite right that the MTC*B* is absolutely worthy of the upgrade - the MTCD is questionable on the basis the new PX5 module is available. I approached the hotaudio guy on these forums and have been advised he cant supply the SOM. Hopefully a matter of time for MTCD users as has least risk.
Thanks mate.

Yes, I purchased a heatsink with thermal adhesive and use kernel adiutor to set performance cpu governor. For my initial 2gb upgrade tests I disabled kernel adiutor, running a stock governor.
The newer intel and px5 units have a factory heatsink.

Hi,
Yes quite throttled - the stock governor restricts CPU ramping to 1.6 - see here https://forum.xda-developers.com/an.../massive-lag-performance-improvement-t3480078 (and end of thread.). Another thread exists discussing heatsinks in depth with some curious examples.
Hi!
I am about to get my 2GB RAM fitted into my MTCC device.
Can you please confirm if the unit recognizes 2GB of RAM automatically after BGA replacing of the original ones?
The guy from the company that will make the BGA replacement told me that usually with chips replacement some kind of reprogramming is necessary (I suppose thay usually replace chips on graphic cards).
From all I found on this forum I assumed the unit will recognize RAM automatically.
Or he is right and there is more to it and I should expect more problems after ram replacement?
Thanks a lot for your feedback.

All computers will recognise new RAM (as long as its up to the max amount it can recognise) automatically, theyre talking nonsense.
Thanks, @typos1 . Will get back with results after fitting in.
Hi!
Just wanted to report, that my MTCC RK3188 unit has just been upgraded to 2 GB.
Modification by a BGA repair specialist took about 1 hour and costed about 50 EUR.
Unit booted without any problems, right after turning ignition on.
The difference is night and day on 5.1.1 booroondook ROM!
No more freezing. Everything is smooth, all google apps now run normally and start withing few seconds (before - about 30-60 seconds - enought to make you want to smash the unit). And Spotify finally can be comfortably used with any navigation app without choking the unit.
At last the unit is almost all I expect from such a unit.
Highly recommended upgrade!

What exactly do you mean? Both are available but I suppose the 128GB version is much more widely used due to the 200$ surcharge for the 512GB version.

As I tried to point out, I suppose the majority will most probably have the 128 GB model because the 512 GB costs 200$ more and offers no real added value because who needs 512 GB of storage on a phone?
Additionally the 512 GB version wasn't in stock at first/released later I think
For better understanding and communication I recommend www.deepl.com/translator it's really good at translating meaningful and contextually aware.
i opted to get the 512GB. i knew 128 gigs wasn't going to be enough for me. unfortunately i destroyed my screen while out to eat and am waiting on getting it repaired.
Mine is 128gb.
Last phone was s7 with 128 memory, and the whole 2 years I had it, it didn't reach 100 gb mark, so i think more than 128 for me is overkill.
I would suggest just using a flash drive and otg it

Is it that fragile?
128GB
128GB for me too, don't think I'll need more than that. I'll just store stuff off on the cloud if I do need more later on. Or maybe get that dock that has the SD card attachment.

honestly i dont know. the drop punched a circle through my glass screen protector and completely shattered and destroyed what i assume to be my digitizer. and the nearest asus repair center is three states away from where i am in the USA
Everything I do on the phone is mainly streamed or stored in the cloud I just went for the 128gb version as the only things taking up a little space are the handful of games. Always been fine with the 128gb iPhones and iPads so never needed more.
