[Q] bootloader unlock - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, XDA!
I have a question.
I want to try to unlock my bootloader.
But there is no method for my device.
But I find a device with same specs as mine that has a method for unlocking.
Can I use that method for my device?
It says that I need to flash these files: lk.bin, recovery.img, preloader.bin via SP Flash Tools.
These files are for unlocking Alcatel Pop 4S but as I said before, it's a phone with same specs..
I'm affraid of damaging the bootloader.
If I will damage it, can I recover or reflash my phones rom back via flash tool without problem?
Or the phone will be totally dead?
Thank you for your time and help.

[Q] Have I bricked my C6806?

Hi everyone,
I just bought a brand new Z Ultra C6806. I plugged it into my computer, installed the My Companion software, and then proceeded to root the device via the Chinese root, which seemed to work just fine. I then tried to unlock the bootloader with Flash Tool, but couldn't get Flash Tool to recognize my device. It kept on saying that I needed to install drivers. I'm doing this on a windows computer, and I already navigated to the drivers folder and installed the z ultra drivers.
I then got fed up with that and saw the thread that let you flash a recovery with a locked bootloader. So I followed those instructions and had a working CWM and TWRP. Except then I wiped data and system and flashed the CarbonRom custom rom, and now my phone won't boot at all.
I'm hopeful that everything is not lost since when I hold volume up and plug my phone into my computer I see a blue LED, which I have gathered means that it is successfully still entering fastboot mode?
How do I get Flash Tool to recognize my device? And is it possible to unlock the C6806 bootloader or have I been deeply mistaken all along?
Thanks for any help
[HOW-TO] Unbrick your XZU
You can use method A. Read carefully how to install the drivers and do not use a USB 3.0 port.

so what you've done is to try and flash a ROM with a locked bootloader. You've found out that it wont....
You just need to use 'flashtool' and flash a FTF file.
But like you said before you'll need to ensure drivers are installed properly. flashtool will need to say:
'device connected in fastboot mode' or
'device detected in flash mode'
Download the latest version of flashtool. Then when you select the type of device, you can select Xperia Z Ultra.
and make sure that ADB is installed (windows will detect new device has been plugged in, and if it wont install drivers, you will need to tell it where to find them)

Reinstalled flashtool drivers for z ultra and flashmode and fastboot, pointed my windows drivers interface to the driver file I downloaded from the sony unlock bootloader website and still didn't get anything on my laptop.
Did the exact same things on my desktop and everything is working fine now, flashtool recognized my device, flashed a Sony FTF, unlocked bootloader successfully, playing with CM now.
Still not sure why this is the case, but alls well that ends well I suppose, thanks.
install flashtools driver you can find it in Flashtools folder. PC need driver when xzu in fastboot mode.If you use USB 3.0 like me try different usb slot.

Hi Guys,
My first Sony Phone (previous Samsung User). I have the US Version C6806 LTE model. I have a similar question. I have unlocked my bootloader successfully via Sony's website. I want to be able to install TWRP and backup original ROM before applying custom ROMs. Doesn't look like there is a root available for this phone model yet? I am on firmware 14.1.B.2.257. My questions are:
1 - Is there a TWRP image I can flash on my model via fastboot without having root? Then boot into TWRP and backup the ROM?
2 - If not can I flash any of the images that I seen on XDA via fastboot that include the Root and TWRP in them? Or will those not work with .257 firmware?
3- If none of the options above work can I download an FTF image (older version) that I can root and use TWRP and if so which image do you recommend that would work with my phone model and LTE network on AT&T?
Thanks for all your help and sorry for all the questions I am a noob with Sony Phones. I did research here and seems most of the threads and images are NOT for C6806 which I have.
I think all tyour questions are answered in various threads in the X-ZU forum...
You have gone about it all ass about face, you should have downgraded to .532 then rooted with kingo (looks like is is safe?). Once rooted you should of then backed up your TA partition in case you ever need the phone serviced.
I dont know if TWRP is working well in any of the boot.img but CMR works fine (except for the date of the backups)
any of the firmware/ftf/ROMs will work with any of the Ultras as far as I know

I flashed a .532 firmware still no safe root method from what I can tell. Looks like I need to flash an earlier version or a FTF hopefully that contains root and custom recovery. I will keep reading and researching. Thanks for the help.
do you want to end up on a rooted stock firmware?
as you have already unlocked the boot loader you can just flash one of the kernel/boot img with recovery and then flash whatever rom you want from there...
I also run into Cyanogen Recovery and have trouble going back to FlashTool with my chromebook. I am a bit panicky, but your post is comforting and ensuring.
I got the C6806 xperia z ultra in year 2014. I have been using it as a home primary PC.

I remember rooting, unlocking bootloader and flashing recovery on my lg l7. It was like i download 1 zip file on my PC, unpack it, connect the phone and run 1 file that did all for me. Is there something like that for g2 mini? (D620r)

First you need to check to see if it is even unlockable. *#*#7378423#*#* software configuration if you can see Bootloader unlock allowed: yes your in luck
If it says Bootloader unlock allowed: no you won't be able to root the device.
Then just follow the instructions for the single sim model on Sonys Web site it goes off the imei no I do believe, so it'll know what model you have. Don't forget to go in developer options and turn on OEM unlock. There's no way to back up ta keys either so once they are gone they are gone that's why I'm waiting.

Looks like no one has shared much about the XA Ultra F3216
If you have not found a solution to your problem with root info let me know. I think we need a couple threads on this model because it seems to be vey different than the others of its family. I am rooted and loaded with Xposed but it was and is a large work around.
This video shares hot to root the F3112. The process is the same but the source files are different.
YouTube video: Xperia XA root guide
To clear the default encrypted partition: When you are in TWRP recovery, wipe userdata partition. The new one will not have encryption.
But a big problem i have found no solution for yet is...
I am not able to boot into TWRP without flashing the recovery then after using TWRP I have to flash the boot.img b4 I can boot into the system again.
So I flash recovery from my computer. Do everything I need to do in recovery then while in recovery I need to flash the boot.img then install root.zip clear catch then reboot to system.

How to root with Magisk Asus Zenfone 3 Max ZC520TL X008. Android 8.1

Ho, I have an Asus Zenfone 3 Max ZC520TL X008. Chipset MT6737m. Firmware WW. Android Oreo 8.1. Locked bootloader. I'm desperate.
I would like to root it with Magisk but for this device I don't find any guide or method. The first problem is how to unlock the bootloader? Asus usually releases an unlock tool but they didn't upgrade it for Oreo 8.1.
Is there a way to unlock it without this tool?
I would like to install twrp so I can flash Magisk.
I hope someone can realise a guide o give me some indications. Or if there is no possible with Oreo, there is a tutorial to downgrade Android in this device?
Thank you
unlocking bootloader is the same procedure as usual, isn't it? enable oem unlocking in developer options (do you have this?) and what is the error for fastboot flashing unlock?

thanks for your reply. I don't have that option in developer options. Only debug USB. I don't know what is the usual way to unlock bootloader. I rooted 2 zenfone Asus and for the two I used Asus unlock bootloader tool. But for this model they released the tool for Nougat. After they released Oreo 8.1 and abandoned this device without releasing the unlock tool for Oreo
fastboot available?

no error. I didn't try because for Asus I always used the unlock tool they released and for this reason I wanted to know another way.
I put the smartphone in fastboot mode and give that command right?
Another question I found a root guide for my smartphone but with Nougat. Could I use the twrp they put in that guide even if I have Oreo?
Thank you
i don't understand you. you did not try, or you got no error?
if this is the guide you found, you can use this TWRP as base for porting (if not working out of the box). But you are runnning Oreo and i am not aware about secure boot enabled for this ROM, so i strongly recommend to make a full ROM dump for your device and create your own scatter file, in case you brick your device
it might be possible to unlock bootloader by hexpatching /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/devinfo partition as @Titokhan did for Zenfone 2 Laser, but this is not recommended for daily drivers and you may need the full ROM dump for unbricking with SP Flash Tool
there is bootless root method with suboot script for locked bootloader, but again, this is dangerous for secure boot / dm-verity enabled device. in case any app tries to alter your boot or system partition, this will break boot chain and brick your device
so please don't follow any guides if you not 100% know what you are doing
start with installing MediaTek MT65xx USB VCOM Preloader USB Drivers for Windows, and report back once you managed to see the preloader showing up for ~ 1 second in device manager like this

I didn't try because Asus didn't release their usually app to unlock bootloader for this model with Oreo. The app is available until Nougat and after they abandoned this device. So before installing twrp my first problem is how to unlock the bootloader without this app. So I'm looking for a way to unlock the bootloader. Someone told me to unlock with ADB/Fastboot but I don't know how to do it.
In another way I would like to know if I can downgrade to Nougat with SPflash even if my bootloader is locked so that after I could use the apk unlock bootloader tool for this device.
It is a very negative device for everything. A lot of problems.
This is the guide I found
https://www.asus.com/zentalk/thread-189650-1-1.html
It is for my model with Nougat and it uses the Asus tool to unlock the bootloader. I wanted to know if I could use twrp version of this guide.
Thanks for your reply and kindness
yes you can use this twrp.
no you (probably) can't downgrade to nougat because of anti-rollback protection (at least, i don't know). if you wanna try, please follow the steps for full ROM dump (because i strongly recommend to have this backup), first step is install preloader drivers. can you do this please?
Someone told you to unlock bootloader with fastboot. and so did i (the command for unlocking is: fastboot flashing unlock) which is your native language? seems you have problems with reading & understanding (because of language barrier?) my native language is german
