I just got my SGS II today. And this is my first android phone. My previous phone was Nokia N80 (2006) . Wow! I love it!
Back to my question, I've been wondering whether the rear camera (8MP camera) protected by the Gorilla Glass?

I had an old (unused) screen protector that I cut to size to stick on. I don't have the patience to cut it to the exact so it's a hexagon. Far from ideal, but it'll do..
I'd have loved gorilla glass on the camera lens..

Gorilla doesn't mean unsrcatchable.
The camera is likely to get scratches from dust, sand.
I buy some sticky smiley and stick on the back so that the glass does't meet the surface.
Now, I don't know if they did or didn't. But if they didn't: How stupid.
Particularly the AT&T model don't know about the other ones, but when the AT&T model is resting on it's back, it's got this bump down at the bottom, so that raises the bottom up, and then at the other end guess what the camera is resting on? Yes you guess right, the camera lens cover, directly, not even the slighted bit of raised edging to protect it or anything.
Poor industrial design, that's like freshman type stuff.
Why don't most phones come with a camera lens cover slider such as like this

my nokia had it like the sonny you showed and still gets dusty. I think they should make the lens of some kind of material that doesnt get dust to stick. I remember the iphone 4 lens were uncovered and never got dusty, might just be the lens material..

dust i can live with, I'll wipe it...scratches I can't!!! i might just buy a generic cheap screen cover and try to cut it out, but it'll be a hard task to do a good job!!! I'm also afraid its going to affect the picture and camera quality with a cover like that on.

Get a case then i suggest. like the trident kraken one, nothing will touch your camera. the cheap screen protector isnt a bad idea either

Ya have a case which is actually raised where the camera is so it helps protect it, but lets say you put it in you pocket with keys (I try to never do that) Now what??? the camera is still out in the open, the backplate doesn't protect it like some other phones...my old nexus ones backplate covered the camera with an extra glass, so if it got scratched you could just replace the backplate...this phone there's nothing to protect it...this is a big deal for me as I am an avid picture taker.
Here's what I do. Buy a roll of high quality 3m clear tape like for packing. Cut out just enough to fit over the camera. And I don't mean a small circle I cut to fit the shape of the silver part. Here's a hint: don't touch the sticky part youre applying with your figertips. Firmly apply and as your doing so try to stretch it a bit. For quick snaps you won't even know its there. Otherwise peel back shoot re apply.
Yeah cheesy but it works great.

sounds like a good idea but what happens when you have to take it off (for some reason) and the glass peice goes with it xD haha. im still with the screen protector even though itd make it less quality. the Kracken case would protect it, its a tank

...a lot sonyericsson phones come with that kind of cover, with LED flash PLUS xenon flash, learn HTC, learn. With such high quality camera's now...I would assume that xenon flash and led flash (for flashlight purposes perhaps or video recording) would be a norm. I would also assume a sliding cover would also be a norm...I mean face it our camera takes better pics than many point and shoot camera's out there, and those aall have lenses that have either covers or retract...If HTC is going to advertise this as their "phone geared toward camera" they should have included such things in my opinion, then again there's alway cost, i would probably end up being around 900 bucks unsubsidized...which if you think about it is good, if you have an amazing point and shoot camera and an amazing phone all in one..

Glass piece ? There's no glass piece on the amaze lens, its just the lens housed in an aluminum cover. And its open .
My tape idea works great, just replace a new piece when its time. Any ways its a cheap pheasable solution

its is a valid idea but I have a feeling the tape will collect dust since it will have sticky borders, and doesn't really prove scratch protection (not that durable).
something like a big generic type of boxwave screen protection would do better i would say since its not as sticky and you can cut many pieces out of it when its time to replace, if you need to replace it at all!!! I'm talking about the screen covers that dont' require water and sopa (not the ones like zagg) but ones that just go on. only concern is how it'll change the picture and video clarity!!! ahhh, i'm takling too much!!
Yeah you do have to be diligent with it, replace a lot , and somthing could poke through and scratch it. But clarity is exactly why I chose tape...now I'm talkin to much...lol

yes lenses get tiny scratches over time, they are just glass. heck even gorilla glass gets scuffed up over time, here's a guy who cracked the lens COVER, but he could fix that by getting a new backplate since its this htc phone HAS a lens cover on the backplate. imagine when people start cracking the actual lens, then the camera becomes completely useless and you'll need to get a new phone

up till now most phones had a glass cover on the backplate, that glass cover would get scratched up like crazy after a year of use, MY N1 had that lens cover on the backplate, I had to order a new backplate after a year so I could shoot clear pictures again...the amaze has no such glass over the actual lens... this can create big problems down the line, since its faily new people have not noticed it yet. worse yet, it can break!!!!

hmmm worth a try, I don't have all this spare money to spend on a bunch of different things though lol.
they have this too, but minimu order is 300 units, its basically the same as as a screen protector, anyone want to go in for 300 units and split it, lol.
Anyone notice the red/black camera fitting on the removable cover is just a hole, not a protective lens?
That meens dirt/sand/etc will collect/scratch direct to camera on internal board.
Anybody have (effective) ideas how to protect the cameras lens without seriously affecting photo quality?

I assume that was thought about in design and was left out so a second lens doesn't collect dirt and finger prints to distort images. I'd bet the glass covering it is pretty tough. This phone is very well designed.

I have a few ideas... Keep it out of dirt... Wash your clothes properly so that you don't have sand and dirt in your pockets when you put your phone in it... Get a new phone.

nice response... i too am a bit concerned that LINT or DUST will collect there...hopefully you'll remember to wipe it out with a cloth or something every so often before you end up taking blurry photos because of it.
just clean it out gently once a week.

Why is there always a smart ass person with smart ass remarks?
If you actually knew a thing or two about lenses, you'd know that this is actually a big deal. Just because "zomg htc did zo gud it haz 2 b da best!" doesn't mean dust particles can't get in.
Some expensive camera lenses that are in the thousands of dollars, which are also "built very good", even get dust in 'em and it creates a huge problem.

Which is why when I buy my DSLR lenses and cameras, I always get the protection plan for them so I get them cleaned once a year.
It's the same thing with phones. This phone is solid. There's always gotta be these threads of nitpicking. Seriously, if it's a big deal, you'll do a few things to prevent it. Clearly, it's part of the design. Is HTC gonna collect ALL of the EVO 4G LTEs in circulation, and fix this issue? No. Is there a way to fix it? Maybe. When you figure that out, then create a thread with [FIX] in the title.
This phone has literally been in the hands of the mainstream public (outside of pre-orders) for 5 days...
A second lens would lower the picture quality in my opinion, cameras have enough lens distortion without adding a second lens to cover the first. Besides, you can easily pull of the cover and gently clean around the lens

There are generally more pieces of glass than two... More like 19 groups in some lenses.

I consider this a feature rather than a bug. I was excited HTC finally got it right when it comes to protecting the camera. Up til now, all HTC devices had a lens "cover" that protruded from the back surface and was therefore prone to scratching and smudging. On my HTC diamond I went so far as to drill a hole in the rear cover/battery door right over the actual lens so that pics would be crisper without being shot through a smoked/shaded plastic lens "cover". It worked beautifully and is in principle, the same they have done with the Evo LTE.

yes im aware but when i say second lens im referring to the plain piece of glass ive seen on cheapo cameras and cellphones, they are put their to protect the lens and it usually hurts more then help

I just got this phone last night. I was shocked to see that the camera element was just sitting under a hole in a piece of plastic.
I've rocked the HTC Desire for the past two years. I do like that the front-most optical element of the Evo 4G LTE camera is recessed. For setting on tables, etc, this is a great design choice.
However... a thin cover glass on the outside of the cover can easily be wiped clean. In the extreme case, that little window can theoretically be easily popped out and replaced (I did pop mine out on the Desire, but just put it back in rather than replace).
Worried about scratches? Hell, it could have been made of Gorilla Glass like the whole front of the phone!
A gaping hole is just an invitation for all kinds of crap to build up in there. Already this morning, after < 12 hrs, mine camera has a bunch of lint and other debris on it. And now it's much more difficult for servicing (wiping).
I strongly question the advisability of just wiping anything that is bonded directly to the camera component. Did anyone read that as advice from HTC? Otherwise, I would tend to think that wiping could remove anti-glare or other optical coatings.
Dust is the only thing that will really get in there and that can be cleaned off easily. Unless you carry your phone with pebbles in your pocket or lay it on a surface with protruding nails or something.
Maybe it's for physical calibration of the micro-servo motor that's attached to the lens.
So on the original Evo, people complained because when you sat the phone down, the glass was the lowest point and touched the tabletop.
Now they've fixed that, and - more complaints. Ya can't win.
I just figure that pocket lint's all I have to worry about, and I'll take the can of dust-off to it once in a while.
I greatly prefer this way to the original Evo way.
i like this feature. sure something can get in there but without anything to actually rub the sand and such onto the lense i can't see this being an issue. the way i clean it (since the back is borderline impossible to get off on my evo) i just take a compressed air can every week or so and blow it into the hole.

I keep keys, coins in different pocket, and don't leave the phone on hard surfaces with screen up / camera down (I have a glass protector on the screen side).
After doing some research on Google & our very own XDA I found out that the scratches are actually not on the camera glass but on the Oleophobic coating applied on the rear camera glass. There are lots of videos available on Youtube on how to remove scratches on mobile camera glass, the procedure usually needs regular white toothpaste or Rubbing Alcohol etc. My moto g4 plus's camera was giving blurred pics due to those scratches but I finally got rid of those issues. One thing is for sure that Moto has used a cheap quality Oleophobic coating on the rear camera glass & they must provide a replacement for that.

You get what you pay for, its a cheap phone bro
I have manage to protect my camera lens by this way. Hope it helps somebody. It is just a plastic screen protector trimmed to fit on the back of my rude case. It does the work perfectly. The only inconvinient, which I dont see a major thing, is that you have to remove it when shooting with the flash on.
By the way, there is not a single difference between pics taken with and without the plastic shield. (without flash)

Why is that? You want better coating, get a phone that cost double (Samsung S7, Apple iPhone 7).
You wanted a cheaper phone, Moto gave you that. Stop mixing in your pocket keys and coins with the phone.

Hahaha, u made me laugh for no reason at all Bro, even my old Samsung Mini still runs without a single scratch on the camera lens so hows that possible at such a low selling cost??? As I've said earlier its about the quality of oleophobic coating used, no matter how much care u take it'll still get the scratches, if you dont believe thn please check other forums on Moto G4 plus.
And my G4 Plus has NO scratches. It just means that, by random, you abused more the G4 and you don't even know how you did it. Or that the cheap phones don't have any coating.
I don't need to read any posts, I can just turn the phone the other way and see the clean lens.
Don't like the coating? Great, use alcohol or toothpaste and remove it.
I just use a transparent/cello tape to cover the whole camera lens part. It is not even noticeable. Camera works perfect ,no focusing issues or any other issue. And it is TOO cheap. And if get scratched anyhow, just replace it. Why to buy any expensive lens protector if it can be protected in almost free.
The best way to avoid scratches is by not keeping your camera lens facing the surface. Another solution is, buy an ARMOUR Cover which totally keeps the lens from external scratches, as it is thick enough it avoid the lens contacting any surface.. If you're too used to keeping your phone with coins or keys in your pocket, well you need to change your habit then

I & also many Moto G4 Plus users have experienced the very same issue (camera glass scratches). The moto doesn't take any responsibility on that issue as i have confirmed the same with the service center guys as it comes under physical damage and said he doesn't want to replace it under the warranty. So I got it replaced for RS. 1860/-. Only the camera glass can't be separated from the back panel (inner), so, they replace the whole back inside panel. I changed it & bought camera skin protection for it.

im not using my X with any case and recently saw that my back lens is really, reallly scratched. I cant understand why Sony did not use glass to protect it. Any idea how to remove this scratches?

It's not glass? It feels like it.. weird, I thought all of the X series were with glass lens. I have no scrathes nor in the lens nor on the screen (actually in the screen there are 2 super small invisible scratches you can view only with a specific angle under bright sun, other than that, it's like new. Been using a flip case and now ordered screen protectors and a good TPU. You got your lens TERRIBLY f*cked up, how did you manage to do that? and the metal is scratched too, right? I suggest you get a TPU now to prevent more damage. I don't think you can fix it, and I don't recommend the toothpaste DIY "trick" since chances are it won't do anything and paste will get stuck in the gap between the lens. I do suggest you to find lens in ebay and replace them yourself, or if you haven't rooted and still have warranty ask what they can do about it in a local store. Can't be very expensive...

Did you contact Sony? Did they repaired the phone? Or have you removed the scratched layer with alcohol/toothpaste?
I've owned many, many phones over the years, some with a plastic lens. This is the first time I've seen my camera so scratched.
Just by looking at the pic, I'm pretty sure the protective plastic camera has not been removed yet..
This is old people, and I highly doubt OP will reply. Whoever says their lens are getting scratches either didn't remove the plastic cover or you are doing something VERY wrong. Phones aren't meant to be placed on rocks or something. Other than that, I have not idea how you scratch it and it looks like glass to me. The X series phones after the z5 were all upgraded with glass lens.

There's no protective plastic on my lens, and it scratches with jeans denim, I've tested it. I own phones with actual plastic lenses, and they do not scratched by fabric. My guess is there are some units where the antiglare layer on the camera lens have some kind of defect.
Before the "you're using it wrong" argument: no. My phone is in pristine condition, it does not have any marks of use anywhere but the camera. It was never near any rough surface. My 2.5 years old Moto E2 plastic camera lens is in a much better condition.

Hi, I just bought original replacement back panel on aliexpress and replaced it - 3min of work. Tryed with toothpaste before but it didnt help at all.
Item is not available anymore but it was from this seller for 9usd and it was real orginal part:

Yes, it was blue so very visable.

No, u used my gf hair dryer [emoji14]
So far I dont have any scratches on lens for months, so sth was ****ed up with previous back panel.
