Not necessarily. There are advantages to moving to a custom rom. Look over relevant stickies (at the top of subsections), review the OP of roms, read user feedback, then decide.
I rooted and expected to go to a custom ROM at some point, but as of yet there has been no compelling reason to do so. With some minor tweaks (removal of bloatware, mostly) and the right apps, stock is working just fine for me. I'll wait until we have ICS source and some new ROMs based on it before I go custom.
Only reason to keep a backup is for showing people the before and after.

Actually until the download site problem is completely resolved, it doesn't hurt to root, then make a backup of the stock ROM to keep just in case. If you do need it, then you've got it, and it doesn't take that much space.
Yeah, considering how often download sites go boom nowadays, keeping a local backup is probably a good idea.
Not sure if this question can even be answered yet, but I too am looking to root, but keep the stock ROM. I just got my i777 4 days ago and am wondering, if I root... will that, in any way, change the upgrading process to official ICS (I'm aware I may have to re-root once I update)?
Once you start removing things after root you will probably not be able to get any official updates. This is true of the current GB update available for the i777 (KH7). Removal of bloatware will cause the update to fail.

Going back to stock is a download and Odin away.
Then you can go to the magical Official ICS that will probably not come out anytime soon.
I'm going to wait until the end of march since that is officially when Samsung says they will have it for the galaxy series. Now I know that doesn't mean squat what with carrier delays and all that crap that slows the update process down,
For what it is worth(nothing) an ATT manager told me he heard the 3rd or 4th, but If it's not by the end of "late first quarter" i'll be rooting. Just doesn't feel necessary right now since I just got this phone...by the time I get bored with it hopefully official ICS and corresponding root directions will be out.

That manager wanted your money.
I know what you're thinking "We already have root, why do we want and/or need this?". Well, if you followed the root thread, you would have seen that the package posted was built off of two images. There was the early firmware posting that it was first made from, then a system pull in a rar archive that was used to put the root package on the latest firmware. In the processes, there were issues with permissions and other items missing. The people involved did a great job with what they had, but I don't like hacked up solutions to problems.
So, to fix that, I had a stock system.img for the release firmware. This allowed me to build a fully stock root package with no missing files or incorrect permissions. While it took some time to get this tested and verified working without having the device, I was able to get it. Thanks goes to Adrynalyne, Mibix, and AstainHellBring (and anyone else) from IRC for testing several packages (Freenode, #galaxy-note-2). This is only the start of things to come, and I plan on slowly working on a ROM based on this then. I also made a deodexed version of the same package. Download and flash that if you wish, but it was more to verify that nothing broke in the deodexing process and to get a working base for a custom ROM.

INSTRUCTIONS
Download one of the above packages for flashing.
Extract the file (7zip works to extract).
Open Odin (download that elsewhere), and put the extracted tar.md5 in the PDA spot
(Re)Boot your phone into download mode and plug it in to your computer
With it recognized in Odin, press start
Once the phone boots up, all should be well. If you notice issues, boot into recovery and wipe data and this should fix the problems.
If you still have issues after wiping the /data and performing a factory reset, please post here.
NOTE: I am not responsible for any ill effects caused to you, your loved ones, you phone, or anything else as a result of flashing this. Do so at your own risk as I won't be held responsible.

Same "version" as the last one created by Mr Robinson, just that it was built off of a system.img of the shipping firmware that preserved all permissions on the files. Functionally, this should be basically the same as what was done earlier, just put together in a less hacked up manner.
What would be the advantage of deodexed version?

Oh I wasn't sure if it litened it up or sped it up in any way. Would u see any reason to flash this over or in place of the first one I have now? All seems to be working fine.
What happens to all the mods that we have used on our phone, e.g. replacing files. I have changed my status bar and changed it so I can use MW with all apps.

Its a true latest rooted system image. You will have to redo all your mods. If your happy with what you have now, I wouldn't worry about it.

It is significantly easier to theme and modify deodexed versions compared to what ships.

If you already have root and/or have done other changes to /system, then there isn't a need to flash this. It is meant more for people that haven't yet rooted. If you have only done root, this shouldn't change anything for you. If you have rooted and made other changes (deleting apps/etc.), then it will undo those changes, and possibly force you to factory reset. Nothing has been deleted from either package, just root and busybox being added.
Deodexed v. stock is mainly for ease of modification. After the first boot, there is no speed difference in the two, though you may save a little bit of storage on the stock version. Functionally, they are identical, just that if one was looking to theme or make other changes, it is easier to do on the Deodexed version. I plan on starting a ROM then, maybe with the help of a few people, and this will start with the deodexed version and will get its own thread if it comes.
Just to answer any future questions, if you're already rooted, you don't need this. It was created as a better starting point for anyone that has not yet rooted their phone.
Thanks for clearing that up imnuts. So seriously though, no performance differences between the two? I find that weird if the permissions are all messed up in the original. I'm planning to root my sister's phone tonight, and it wouldn't be hard for me to do mine again tonight either if there is some reason for it, from the sounds of it, there isn't

I don't know if there are permissions issues with what was out, but given how it was made, it could be possible that one or two of the items with special permissions was missed, and without hitting a specific usage scenario, you'd never know. I think that given what MrRobinson was working with, he did a great job :good: I haven't actually compared what I have with what was previously out other than to verify that all files were present, I wasn't looking at permissions.
As for what's best for future efforts, it's going to be easier to theme and mod the deodexed version.
I do plan on building a ROM then starting next week, but progress will be slow (this alone took a week to get everything sorted properly).

there is no issues with mrRobinson's root image...that article is misleading. The very first image had issues but was quickly revised and fully functional!

The S4 is my first smartphone. Ever. I rooted it a few weeks ago and have been playing with different tools and utilities. I love the extra control it gives me.
Been using Smartlauncher Pro as my launcher as well, but it doesn't give me the customization I want. I dig the UI though, it's minimalist just the way I like.
I've been keeping my eye out for ROM's I can try out, and I think I want to try Cynogen for the S4. However, I am terrified of destroying my investment. I've read horror stories of flashes gone wrong... I don't want to permanently brick my device.
Is there anyone here who can hold my hand while I install my ROM? I seriously have no idea what I'm doing, instructions or no.
...I sound so pathetic right now.

Do you have a custom recovery installed like TWRP or CWM? If you do all you need to do is download the rom (I put them on ext sd)....and gapps if your flashing cyanogen, boot into recovery, make a backup (I put this on my ext sd card too), wipe, flash rom, flash gapps and reboot.

Hi!
The first thing you need to find out is what build number you have. This will tell you if you are able to root and install recovery in order to put a new rom on the phone. Do NOT update your phone by the over the air update that is currently available! To find your build number go to settings: the more tab: about phone, then scroll down. If you have JDQ39.I545VRUAME7 then you are in the same boat as many of us and accidently did the upgrade which at this moment has no way to root. If you haven't done the upgrade than you need to find one of the many threads on here that will walk you through the process.
Hope this helps some, there are others on here that can give you a much more detailed walkthrough of how to root if you are on the correct older build.
The best advice I can give is to read the entire original post (OP) for the ROM you like, and as much of the thread as you can. 9 times out of 10 when someone has a problem with the ROM it's been discussed, and is often listed in the OP. Usually there are step by step instructions on installing the ROM. I believe there's a general ROM flashing guide in this forum somewhere as well.

JDQ39.I545VRUAMDK is the version I have. I froze the updater using Titanium a couple weeks ago... And my phone is already rooted.

That's good! You haven't been updated which means you can still flash ROMs. Are you familiar with both types of ROMs, TouchWiz and AOSP? CyanogenMod is an AOSP ROM, which will be completely different from what you're running right now, TouchWiz. You're rooted, but have you installed a custom recovery? You need one to flash ROM's, either TWRP or CWM. You can also make a nandroid backup in recovery, and if anything goes wrong, you can go back to exactly how you are now. Definitely read the OP of the ROM thread multiple times and follow the flashing instructions correctly.

If anything goes wrong with the flash in the next step, go to restore and you'll be back to how you are now.
Did you download the ROM to your phone along with Gapps? For AOSP Roms you need a separate gapps package, which is Google apps.

I just started the download for gapps package using Goomanager.
I checked out the Cyanogenmod site, apparently there's no stable versions for the VZW GS4?
Oh wells, flash anyway! That's what I do!
Worst case scenario, you have to use Odin to get back to stock. I used to keep a nandroid on my PC for just in case scenarios as well. One time on my GNex I flashed something really bad and had to adb pull everything off my phone, wipe the whole thing, and start over.

Yeah you'll have to download a nightly, I don't think there are any stable versions out yet. Are you downloading it directly on your phone? Or on your PC?

Users are expected to do some reading before they post and blatantly ask for hand holding. And, as you have seen, other users have a tendency to not be so nice and make trolling comments because of that.
This is a development site and is about development - so, please, study up first, then post questions based from what you have learned.
So I've had the phone for less than a week. I've performed the ioroot procedure and installed twrp. Other than that, the phone is stock right now - 10B. I've performed a backup.
My phone is offering to install 11C. I'd like to update to that version, but at a glance it seems like there may be issues if I ever need to downgrade, or.. I may lose root.
So, for our specific phone, the VS985 model, what is the best way to upgrade to the latest stock ROM and keep root / the ability to downgrade?
Sorry for the noob question, but I'm new to the phone and am seeing some conflicting information, probably due to variances between different versions of the phone. I just want to do this right the first time and avoid having to ask more dumb questions
Look for the thread by bweN diorD in either General or Q&A that starts with [REF] and has img or images in the title.
Use the links in that thread to flash the 12b modem and system images, using autoprime's flash2Modem and flash2System zips (bweN links to that thread).
Your choice on whether you also want to flash the 12b boot image. I did flash the 11c boot, didn't bother with 12b.
After flashing the new images, anything you've tweaked in /system has to be re-nudged -- freezing verizon bloat, freezing "System updates..." (or renaming the /system/app LGDMSClient files), reinstalling the hotspot mod (if you need it). It's a pretty painless evolution.
(Definitely freeze System updates.... Once you've got twrp, if you try to install an OTA directly you'll get stuck in a boot-to-recovery problem. Autoprime has a flashable zip that wipes out the files causing the boot-to-recovery, I keep a copy of that zip loaded on my phone's user volume, but it's simpler to just not try to install an OTA.)

My understanding is that it is safer to avoid flashing the boot image because changes to the bootloader could affect root or the ability to roll back. Is there a reason you bothered flashing 11C?

There is no downside to flashing it at this point, but I haven't seen proof there is any benefit either. I'm still on 10b running L ROMs no problem, so I don't see any point in updating anything but the modem.

You can root 10B and tell supersu to maintain root and take all the OTAs and still keep root. I did that so that I'd have VoLTE and I could take an OTA in the future without issue if it was shown root would survive. Your choice I guess, but we know root survives all the way to 12B so why not go the stock route to ensure you are fully updated? Just my thoughts anyway.

Yeah we all could be as well. The issue is your camera is jacked and you lose things like multi window, ir remote, and quick memo writing.
I tried 5.0.x for a few days but the negatives weren't worth it to me. I am fully updated at 12B as I can still use the G3 with the stock goodies that were added by LG and not cripple the device by putting AOSP on it. Don't get me wrong, I prefer the look of AOSP, but one of the major reasons I got this phone was for the camera and without the 5.0.x roms including LG camera app with them, it's a no go for me. Google camera app just doesn't do it and laser focus is gone so pics are crap in my opinion.
Instead I use g3 tweaks and Nova to make my phone look more like AOSP. I'll wait for the devs to get ahold of 5.0.x for the g3 so we can still keep the g3 goodies before I update any further.

the camera doesnt stand up to stock, no doubt, but thats the only thing i wish could be better. the rest of that stuff i dont use.
it all depends on what you want/use/need.
i prefer custom roms the majority of the time.

You're right for sure. It's all personal preference. I figure if the only thing that looks different from stock is the settings menu and not having the quick settings tiles, I'm close enough that I'm not bothered by all the LG colors and added stuff.
I'm waiting for the camera app to get ported then I'm all in on a custom 5.0.x rom. That may be a while, but I can wait.

For anyone reading this, I just wanted to let them know that there is a ported version of Quick Remote that works under AOSP / CM including Lollipop. I think it's in the non-variant G3 sections.

Thank you for this. Now I have to ask a couple of newbie questions. I've been exclusively in the Sony Xperia and Nexus worlds before, this being my first Samsung. In trying to figure out if the processes I've become familiar with are applicable to this device, using your ROM.
For instance, my Sony's were pretty easy after the initial root. Kind souls in the community took new releases and created a pre-rooted firmware with TWRP and SuperSU built-in. I could then just dirty flash the ROM from TWRP, sometimes wiping cache/dalvic, and like magic my device is upgraded with no loss of data.
Is this how it works with this AQF5 ROM? I'm starting with a rooted (@ashyx method) T820 with AQBB. Do I just download the rooted ROM to SD card, boot to TWRP, dirty flash and go?

Dirty flash should work, sometimes I try that first and if I get any strange behaviour, do a wipe and re flash then load the rest back with titanium backup. Make sure you have all your backups organised first before starting.
Let me know how it works out. The risk with the first option is something residual being left that may result in force closes or just defeating the purpose.
Just beware if for some reason it doesn't root DM verity will occur and you will be forced to format internal data so back that up to your external card too, before, just in case, shouldn't happen though. I have no idea how many others have used this yet as there have been no replies to say all ok

Not sure I can use this ROM in Germany, what kind of modifications are made? Would love to see some development
As long as you have the same model T-820 you can, some local variants have a local customisation but it's likely to be minor with this model. From memory when I set it up on mine all common languages were available, if that's your concern, make sure you have a twrp backup and you can always roll back
The only mods were as listed above, seems slightly quicker, perhaps the zip aligning, but it will allow more mods as they come along

Always, Knox is there to tell Samsung if you've done this sort of thing, it's just what you accept with custom roms

I have always wondered about that. Flashing a base from another country. Like I live in the US so I always have flashed USA versions. You are
saying that I CAN flash this Korean version on my T-820 phone and have all working ok with English ?

For the record, I don't live in the us but bought mine from best buys whilst there, it was rooted within a couple of hours from memory,..... can't help myself ?.
I Flashed a firmware from another country after that,, just because it was a later series, can't remember which.
I use the Tweaked one as my daily driver, people seem to be finding that good. I have found the latest firmware now seems to carry out a full wipe, and I haven't managed to flash a rom over it yet, so reverted back to the Tweaked version I have.
It may require an update to TWRP
If you have any problems restore your backup, if you want to persist flash the firmware that its based on first,AQF5, then flash the ROM over it, with our without wipe.

It will still work in English you just have to find which is your main language in the very beginning

This rom is not being developed any more,but the tweaked version in this forum, is based off the stock firmware which came after this,it runs stable, has a few enhancements and being a later base it's got a number of Samsung security updates too.
