Nexus 5x Root - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Good Peoples !
If i root my Nexus 5x, is it going to stop getting all official OTA update from google?
like security patches and firmware update?
or does it going to occur any other problem?
Thanks in Advance

Yes you can not take ota if you are rooted. It will bootloader you and you will have to do a full wipe to recover.

Yes. If you root your android then you can't get OTA updates. Rooting make changes to your android system partition. OTA updates check modification to your android while flashing and found any modifications then OTA abort. If you get OTA updates on your rooted android and you flash then it chances to brick your android.
You want to revert back to stock to get OTA updates.

Yes. If you unroot then you go back to stock.
If you flashed custom recovery then you want to flash stock recovery again to go back to stock.

Rooted and Stock ROM: Will accepting today's (10 JUL) update do any harm?

Title says it all. I understand it screws up the search function (but can be fixed with an APK reload, but will the OTA cause any other issues?
huh I didn't get a software update.. and I just checked.... none for me on AT&T
If you are rooted with a stock rom, you can not install the update because you are rooted. There are 2 ways to install the update 1) unroot your phone, accept the update, and reroot your phone or 2) flash a custom factory rom with the update already installed.
And yes the update does disable the universal search on your phone and not sure if there are any other issues.

Future ROMs will have the update, right? So, if we wanted to, we could just wait?

Updates and root.

If I take a system update will I lose root? I've blocked updates but was just wondering.

Most likely.

If you have made any system changes, you will not be able to accept it anyways. It will just fail.

Best practice is to wait and see if those that have taken an update are able to Root afterwards, if so then your good!
Personally... I'm just keeping my phone on the 10B firmware until a custom recovery comes. My phone runs great right now.
If for some reason we make it to the Android L update before we get an unlock, then I'm wait and see if it's possible to Root and unlock that prior to updating.
My S4 was on 4.4.4 and really being on 4.4.2 were not missing anything.

You would lose root.
It's a toss up of whether you would even be able to take the update.
Depends on how they check the file system. Definitely if you are running Xposed, you won't be able to OTA unless you go back to stock.
Somewhat OT, but I was a bit surprised to see that I kept root after a factory reset (TiBu borked myself into a bootloop). Just re-downloaded and installed SuperSU, and good to go.

5.1 OTA will I still have Root?

As the title says, I really don't want to lose my (Rooted) heavily modded ROM, has anyone tried to update OTA and kept Root?
It either wont verify update or if it somehow does you will lose root with your mods and changes

You`ll never get past that "verify" error while your phone is rooted and/or custom recovery installed. If you want to update and keep ROOT you need to flash a prerooted zip found here on the forums.
what about the mods and stuff?

you will have to start all over again on a clean system
That sucks, I might just skip this update until Android M, as it's not worthy and also, I have heard of many battery drain reports, one of which just a few minutes ago from a friend of mine

Quick question about root, functions and updates.

I have an unlocked 5X with TWRP installed (but have not yet modified system.)
I'm about to flash SuperSu but have 2 questions.
1) Will I lose functions such as the fingerprint reader if the device is rooted?
2) Is there a risk of getting in a bootloop if a firmware update is downloaded?

if you install the stock rom you will keep this functionality otherwise you need to wait concerning CM13 build
2) Is there a risk of getting in a bootloop if a firmware update is downloaded?
there is always a risk but minor

You will not be able to flash ota with a custom recovery. When a new update arrives you will have to wait for a twrp compatible zip or return to complete stock to flash the update

Right, I remember this happening with other devices, as the OTA uses a recovery script.
I wonder if there will be nag screens for OTA's. This rendered my wife's S4 so annoying to use, with a persistent notification, until I found a block method (disallowing notifications didn't work since I'd have had to disable notifications for the entire Android System UI...)

I went about 5 days before I installed the b140 update and I don't recall any annoying notifications. I know exactly what you mean though my s5 active did the same thing because I didn't want to update and lose root. I finally found a way to disable it but like you said it was very irritating.

T-Mobile 10.0.40 update released

Surprised I haven't seen any posts. 10.0.40 landed on my phone on Oct 28th. Only change is the October security update.
Hello
After rooting my Mclaren, I can't do any more system updates. Does anyone know how I can do it?
Best Regards

You need to restore the boot image back to stock. In Magisk Manager, select uninstall and select restore images. Then reboot and try again. Howerver, depending on what method you used to root, it may not be able to restore the factory boot image. In which case you'll need to find it online.
Seems very skippable lol. Certainly not worth the effort of unrooting and rerooting.
Mine was rooted and had .35 on it. This popped up on mine too and I was able to do OTA upgrade. Not full and lose my data. Happy here
The only change was October security update
Do you have to run the OTA fixer every time there's a new OTA?

Ok, so I have the update waiting to be installed, and I've ran the fixer in the past after a bootloader unlock:
What is the process to update now? Lol do I need to do anything with Magisk?
I think my phone failed to install it, or I just never tried yet cause I'm stupid and still trying to learn all this properly.
