Installing TWRP without unlocked BL - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

Hey guys, I have a xiaomi redmi note 3 pro kate running global developer version of miui 8.
I applied for permission of bootloader unlocking on the 30th of December. Ive been waiting for over 12 days and I'm still getting the notorious "couldnt verify device" . I have tried every single tips, tricks, methods thats available on numerous forum threads. None of them work. Don't bother suggesting me a "way" to unlock my bl thats "100% guranteed" cuz honestly i've given up hope. I dont want to unlock in the unofficial way either.
I read a thread here that says it's possible to flash twrp, root and flash all kinds of roms without unlocking the bl.
Could you guys maybe guide me through what i need to do to flash twrp and root? what do i need to do?And again, I have a kate.

yeah i want too flash root and stuff's without unlock bootloader, i have SD version of RN3, btw!

Trying to flash my M4 to older or different ROM so i can unlock bootloader

hi there,
like the title says im trying to flash a different / older/ stock ROM to see if i can unlock the bootloader and or if anyone knows a way i can root my device without the bootloader that would be great too but i think ive expended all my options..... if you can help in any way that would be great! thank you
also i have flashtool downloaded but can not get it to work with my device just keeps saying my bootloader can not be officially unlocked ..... can it be unofficially unlocked?
You have to use the Xperia M2 method to unlock the bootloader as there is still no official way.
There are more than enough guides in other topics where you can read how to unlock your bootloader. First enter the service menu(*"*"service"*"*) and check is it is allowed on your device. If it says 'no' there is no way to unlock. Also if you can unlock don't forget to tick the box in developer options
For root you can afaik just install twrp for locked bootloaders and flash a root (supersu for example)
thanks guys ,
yes i have looked into the tutorials and cannot seem to make it work.
i tried the m2 method and nothing either ..... my bootloader says it cannot be unlocked but ive been reading and apparently there is a way to get around it .... ive successfully flashed different ROMS to try and gain root access too but with no luck
so i guess im asking if anyone has had luck with unclocking there "locked" bootloader on an m4 or if it is even possible at all?
any help is greatly appreciated

Choosing a good plan to migrate to CyanogenMod

Hi people,
I just bought a new Redmi note 3, and I would like to pass him into cyanogenmod.
Here what i'm attending to do.
Safe the stock room
unlock the bootloader (unofficialy)
root the phone
install the CyanogenMod
1 : For doing the backup I was there are many versions of TWRP.. so which one use ?
2: I don't want to wait half month or even more just the unlock the bootloader ! so i guess I will go unofficially any good link
# I just saw that topic apparently it's possible to flash the TWRP without unlocking the bootloader.. is that method is compatible to put CyanogenMod after ?
3: Any good method, link will be welcome
Thank folks.
1. Alka twrp can backup the most partitions
2. Backup request will be accepted within hours lately.. but yeah that method is possible
Have to agree with that. Officially unlocking bootloader is a mostly painless process nowadays. It's quite possible to unlock your bl officially in less than a week. Since it looks like you know what you're talking about, I'm sure I don't need to tell you the possible benefits of having an offically unlocked bl over the unoffically unlocked one.
Personally, I think the best method is as follows:
Unlock bl officially
flash twrp through fastboot
flash twrp Alka
backup all partitions into sd card
flash appropriate cm firmware
flash rom, gapps, etc
flash apollo sound mod(cause it's great)
Please feel free to disagree.
Ivanlai I don't know If I will still unlock the Bootloader -> New method to flash Twrp recovery !! without unlock bootloader ! (kate/kenzo) safe ! by supercowz

official method to unlock bootloader

Hi everyone,
So here's my query
Back in March I have unlocked my redmi note 3 bootloader by OFFICIAL way of redmi. But I now I m thinking what was the use of doing with official way why not unofficial.
In simple words can someone tell me down in comments section
What benefits I can get over official rather someone who has unlocked unofficially!!
Thanks
Best way is to unlock it by official method .
Read here an answer from an advanced user from miui forum:
"Hello,
Official way of unlocking is considered as the safest way of unlocking bootloader since it is done with MiUnlock Tool, and if the BL is unlocked then it won't relock during an OTA update or while flashing an incremental rom and the only way to relock BL is to flash fastboot rom through Miflash, but you have to get permission from Xiaomi for unlockin and it will take sometime. But on the otherhand unofficial way doesn't required any permission and risk factor is involved in this method, where you have to use stock rom emmc file to replace miui emmc and need to flash through Miflash, many users reported that they have bricked their device by following the same. In order to flash rom's, everytime you have to replace emmc, if you forgot then you will end up in bootloop. I guess I have cleared your doubt.
Thank you. "

Per MI forum: Mi Unlock often fails despite having bootloader unlock permission.

I see tons of people complaining that the Mi Unlock fails at 50%. I had that too, but solved it (somewhat) after downloading and using a newer version of the Mi Unlock (version 2.3).
Although I get past the 50% mark, the Mi Unlock program fails after verifying phone. [I tried to put a picture of the result below but XDA bars me from this practice until after I have submitted 10 posts.] Since XDA bans me from posting a picture of the result, I will try to verbally illustrate:
The Mi Unlock process runs the entire course - 100% - and then gives me green check mark and says, "Verified". The next step the Mi Unlock program takes is to unlock the bootloader. However it is at this step the process fails. Instead of unlocking, I get a message saying "Couldn't Unlock." Under those words is the following message, "After 72 hours of trying to unlock this device".
Anyone even know what that is supposed to mean? Is that just chinglish? Or better still, how can I get my device unlocked?
I SEE TONS OF PEOPLE WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM! Anyone have any idea what is going wrong? How do I deal with it? Am I to assume the message is suggesting we wait that particular number of hours before we can make the thing unlock the bootloader? Anyone? This IS a question that plagues many in the MIUI forum! And after going back roughly 70 pages into the forum, I see no solution; no answers! Just the same complaint over and over again and again.
I tried the unlocker a few times afterward, over the course of the day, with the same result. However curiously, there is one change to the message. It now says, "After 63 hours of trying to unlock this device". Is this suggesting I have to wait and try it in 63 hours?
Again, I see this same complaint time and time again on the MIUI forum for this phone. Anyone have any idea how to handle this dilemma?
One last question: How do I change out my MIUI ROM (currently MIUI 8.6.8.18 Beta) to a developer ROM? Ultimately I want to install a custom RR Rom or some other custom ROM. But MIUI 8.6.8.18 is android 5.0 LL; and the new Custom ROMs available are using android 7.0. My understanding is I need at least an MIUI Dev Rom with android 6.0 MM on the phone before it will let me leap over to some other Custom ROM with android 7.0. [I tried it. And though everything worked perfectly, (got my device rooted, and installed ZCX TWRP, etc.), it just bootlooped after flashing in TWRP. I tried it with several Custom ROMs - Always with the same bootloop. After exhaustive reading in web forums, the suggestion out there seems to be that I have to go back and install a DEV Rom with android 6.0 MM; then free the bootloader again, reinstall SuperSU (or similar), and then TWRP, etc. , and finally I will be able to Flash to one of the new Custom Rom's that uses Android 7.0.]
With this objective in mind, I downloaded the Dev Rom to my phone (7.7.20 - which is the latest for this phone). However, the UPDATER app on the phone won't update from the MIUI 8.6.8.18 Beta to the MIUI 7.7.20 Global Dev Rom. I select it in the updater by browsing over to it, then click "OK", but nothing happens. Instead of installing the MIUI 7.7 Dev Rom, the app just says that there are no updates...
Any ideas? Thanks
Unlock fails
Hi,
did you find a solution to your unlock problem. I have exactly the same problem and found only lots of solution for other problem with unlock.

Now the process of unlocking bootloader is quick.
I deleted my MI account & created a new one. So, applied for permissions again & unlocked in 5 mins after approval.

Please can you provide the exact steps you have taken?
IMHO this would help users like me who did follow the instructions to unlock the bootloader and run into this problem.
I did run into the problem, "After 72 hours of trying to unlock this device", even that I followed the instructions:
Create a Mi acoount (with my phone nr.)
Apply for unlocking, with giving reason
wait for confirmation sms
download unlocking tool
on the phone: activate dev options, switch on usb debugging, OEM unlocking and bind phone to Mi account in "Mi Unlock Status"
reboot phone in fastboot mode
run Mi Unlock prog on PC and log in
when prompted connect phone
The Mi unlocking tool stopped after verifying (green hock) at "Unlocking" with a red cross and show then "After 72 hours of trying to unlock this device".
I do not see where I went wrong...
IMHO this is a f***ed up process of unlocking the bootloader and Xiaomi should work on this.
I haven't read the post, but you don't need to unlock bootloader to root or flash custom roms

Hi,
As far as I know unfortunately if you want to install a custom rom you need to replace the Xiaomi recovery with a custom one, like twrp. In order to do that you need to unlock the bootloader first. Then you can flash the custom recovery with the command "fastboot flash recovery twrp-x.x.x-x-mido.img" for the Redmi Note 4 SD for example.

how? Any link to steps? I have currently resurrection remix 5.7.4 with OFFICIALLY unlocked bootloader, but it's useless because all new ROMs require new firmware and I don't have anymore access to my Xiaomi account which had granted bootloader permission, would like to move from marshmallow to Oreo, but that would require flashing me MIUI, relock bootloader and I will get stuck there and don't wanna apply anymore for official unlock, it's PITA
Forget all of this follow https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/kate-guide-install-lineage-os-locked-t3546154

Yeah, this one. Tbh, this needs to be pinned, it's often buried under other posts so people don't know how to do it.

New User - Help with unlocking bootloader - please read

Hello. First let me explain my situation.
So, today i bought a used Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (SD)
I have a problem. I dont know if my phone is unlocked. When the phone is booting up, on the bottom it says unlocked, then it changes to powered by android.
Last year i had a Xiaomi Redmi 3 which i unlocked myself.
I downloaded the MiUnlock Tool from the official website, when i signed in it was authenticating my account with success (I dont know if i should ask for another permission for unlocking, as i already asked for permission for the Redmi 3 a year ago). When i clicked unlock, first time it went to 50% and it said with green Phone already unlocked. When i clicked unlock again it said unable to recognize phone error 1, or something similar to that, i did chech the drivers in the program, everything was fine. I tried that two more times, same problem.
In developer options in the 'MI unlock status' it already says 'unlocked'
The questions:
1.How do i chech if my bootloader is unlocked ?
2.If it is not unlocked, do i have to ask for permission from Xiaomi ? If so, how long is the waiting time (i heard that now its longer than before)
3. The phone is with Global MIUI firmware. Do i have to flash chinese developer firmware ? And for that does the bootloader to be unlocked, or its a step that has to be taken in order to unlock the bootloader ?
I searched on some subforums buts its been a long time since ive done this, so i thought i'd ask here.
Thanks in advance. Sorry for the long post, but i hope you'll read the whole thing.
1.It seems that your phone is already unlocked. You can check it like you already did; under developer options and startup.
2.I heard they gave up the 'permission to unlock' procedure. Not sure though. You only need to unlock bootloader when it is locked.
3.You should flash the global developer rom. Firmware is included. Although you can also flash the China version if you want.
I would flash the global developer through MiFlash tool and after that twrp and possibly some custom ROM if you want. When flashing custom roms, you should always check for the newest firmware before flashing and right after wipes flash that firmware before rom flash. https://www.google.com/amp/s/forum....nt/firmware-xiaomi-redmi-note-4-t3760917/amp/
