Some of you might already be aware others maybe not, with the latest build of the "Headunit Reloaded app" you can now enjoy the Android Auto experience on almost any device. Currently confirmed units capable to run the app:
- RK3188 based units, but only through Wifi connection
- AN-21U, xTrons, will work with USB, but only using Software decoding (occasionally that can produce some H264 decoding glitched)
-Allwinner powered devices
- Intel powered Joying units
Possibly other devices as well.

I have just updated the free trial app version to match the latest release so trial now also include all the features from the main build for those who want to try it out on their devices.

Can you tell me what this actually can do for me?

The app allows you to convert your Android powered headunit into an "Android Auto" compatible headunit, instead of buying an expensive Sony/Pioneer/Kenwood which can run Android Auto on it, you can use you existing unit to do so.

I dont understand the point - a full Android headunit can do so much more than Android auto.
Its a bit like saying "theres this great app that reduces the functionality of your device and makes it dumber".
Or have I missed something ?

Hi.
You are half way right, using "Android Auto" is way more limited than using a full blown Android, but it has some advantages as well, like for example it integrates SMS control from the headunit and data used between the phone and the headunit isn't classed as tethered data, which comes VERY hand for those who have included allowance in their phone package but not usable for tethering. Meaning you can listen to online streams (radios) on the road without tethering to the headunit. I know you can do that over A2DP as well, but most of this devices have a very cheap and bad quality A2DP receiver making listening to anything a painful act rather than an enjoyable experience.
Others will find the simplicity of the app appealing as well as the fact that it removes all the unnecessary notifications (distractions) while driving, but this like everything else related to Android Auto VS a full Android headunit is subjective.
Everybody has different needs, different preferences and so on so while some people will find Android Auto to be the best alternative possible others will say it's stupid to limit the functionality of your headunit. I tend to agree with both of them and both have valid points, I thinks it's down to individual preference.

Yes, you make some good points actually, some of which I find quite appealing. I kinda fancy some of those features on my Android headunit without running Android auto.
Just seen youre the dev, I wasnt trying to dis your project, just couldnt see the point, although I can now and yeah, its all subjective and down to personal preference.

No worries haven't considered it like that, I like to be as objective as possible, same with AutoMate, I think it's a great app and usually when I'm asked to compared it against AA I try to do it in objective way.
At the end of the day it doesn't matter which approach somebody takes until the it doesn't start with the i letter

Maybe your next project should be bringing some of the advantages of this one to people who dont want Android Auto on their Android headunit, but want some of the benefits youve pointed out, like tethering data classed as phone data and SMS control from the headunit ? Sort of a halfway house. (I m joking but kinda serious too).

I'm in India and I just bought an android head unit. Its Allwin. When I go on the app store, I can't download the app, its not compatible.

hey, it's working fine, but is it possible to change resolution to 1024x768? I can work only on 800x640, and the next one is 1280x720, which isn't working properly on my HU

DSLR Remote for Android ?

the Iphone works with an DSRL Remote app. I have an HTC HD2 and it works with winmobile 6 and with android now. Does somebody know an app which works on android or winmobile 6 like the DSRL Remote camcorder app ?

i recently found out that it is possible to do this with a nintendo ds but it requires some DIY work or paying someone to do this for you, surprisingly even in germany there seem to be some people building these.
my uncle bought one of these cables/modules for his canon 5dmk2 a few weeks ago. since i got my hands on it I thought about how awesome such a feature would be (preferably wireless) on an a phone.
I would love something like that! An android phone would make the holy grail of dSLR remote controls. Time intervals, exposure settings, super-smooth HDRI with bracketing of multiple photos, live view, hell even motion activated shooting (figure out a way to detect motion from image through the live view and trigger a shutter release every time that happens).
Anyone up for this?! I'll be getting both my SGS and 5DMKII in about a month, super willing to beta-test

It is possible. Only drawback is that a laptop is needed like with the iphone app.
So a possible setup would be like this:
Camera <-> USB cable <-> Laptop running Linux <-> WLAN/Edge/3G <-> Android
The only big dislike is the laptop in that chain

It's the same setup used for the iPhone, it's basically a remote control setup and I can't really see how it helps that much, it feels like more of a gimmick rather than something helpful since you still need to carry a laptop with you.
Now, if the camera could be directly connected to the phone, that'd be awesome, since you pretty much carry a phone with you at all times.

That's the point. It is not possible... well, everything is, but the effort cannot be worth the outcome.
It is more likely to do it with an Arduino board with Wlan chip and USB host.
But then again, you have to reverse engineer the Nikon and Canon protocols or use the linux library.... Should be possible, but you need to buy some hardware anyway.

Cheap plug-computers like sheevaplug or this one: http://www.ionicsplug.com/cumulus.html would make it kind of easy as they run linux, have USB connector(s) and have WLAN (sheevaplug needs USB WLAN stick).
Cross-compiling gphoto library, writing a software which talks through gphoto to the cam and report the capabilities back to the connected Android / Iphone.
Only (major) drawback is that those plug computers need a power supply. I have seen someone running sheevaplug with solar panel .
Sheevaplug is around 75€, so quite affordable.
I need to connect my 5DM2 and check whether things like touch-focus, live preview and stuff would be possible...
What do you think about the power plug issue?

At work atm but will try to read through the article, but as I understand so far, this guy uses a small linux computer that can communicate through a WLAN adapter so you basically have a wifi remote control. Looks pretty darn cool, especially for the money, and using a solar panel would be awesome!
Only thing is that it doesn't have that much to do with android as far as I can tell, if it's a web interface then you can use it with any device, right?
What I was thinking was more in the likes of a replacement for the $100+ timer triggers with your phone. I think it should be possible but maybe people wouldn't invest in it (though I think they should).
BTW, I just remembered that you can also trigger the camera through the headphone jack, as with those diy remote releases. Do you think there could be a way to use the SGS headphone jack to cause shutter releases? You wouldn't get any control of the settings from the phone, but you could still program time intervals or bulb shots! Hey, even motion sensing shots, provided you dock your phone some place. And you have to admit it doesn't sound too difficult, right?

If/when someone does make something like this, I would think a small netbook would be sufficiently portable, compared to a 15" or 17" laptop, to use as the "host" device.

I see. The thing is there are ready to use solutions out there which do exactly what you are requesting.
My approach was a different one. I wanted to be able to mount the camera somewhere, connect sheevaplug, then go somewhere and remotely control the camera in every aspect. Imaging you have to shoot a marriage. You could place the camera somewhere, take a seat somewhere and see exactly the live-view image from the camera, can point somewhere on the touchscreen to focus on that point, control exposure settings and hit the button to take the shot.
That was my approach. If I would be able to achieve this just with a sheevaplug computer for 75€, that would be great. But there still is the issue with the power necessary to run the computer.
Another problem would be to gain the time needed to write the app. I am able to do that, but time is rare...
I can understand the appeal, as I said it would be awesome to have such a setup, just not for me so far. I'll try to understand how the shutter release works through the remote and report here, i think the headphone jack would be really nice considering that no amount of extra equipment would be necessary, apart from the cable.
Just a quick question, why would you require any coding on the phone, why not use a VNC-like application and install the official canon application on windows?

have you ever tried to watch a movie through a VNC connection?
Sheevaplug is driven by a Marvell ARM CPU, no x86 which would be needed by Windows. So only possible way would be to install linux with virtualization, setup windows XP in a container, install EOS software and a VNC server, then use a crappy VNC client on Android to control my camera? Sounds like a crappy setup to me
Having a small, slick and performant native UI would be muuuuuuch better.
I personally don't think that you will succeed with this headphone jack thingie. But I wish you good luck

*edit* google for libGphoto, it also has a remote.
Looking a bit further, i came across this:

Now i haven't found any more info on the project yet, but this looks like a project that some of us here on XDA could maybe join in on.. The only problem that then remains is the usb-usb cable There's an actual start on porting an existing lib available!

With all of our marvelous hacking friends, I don't see why we couldn't expect direct tethering for a DSLR on Xoom or other tabs with usb capabilities.

I am teaching myself how to use my DSLR, and I begin thinking... "Wow, a lot of these settings could be a lot easier and more intuitive to control... why isn't there a DSLR powered by Android?"

The iphone version has been out for a while but i cant find any info on a version for android..
The company behind iRig have been speaking about a android version but i dont think they even have started working on one yet.
It would be a really nice application! To allways be ready to record without setting up the computor and stuff like that ya know, or to just sit in the sofa with earplugs and play some sweet solos and riffs without having your gf whine about the loud music..

This would be awesome, I would definitely buy it. It's like a Line 6 pod but much cheaper.

I actually sent then a message on youtube to see if they were working on one. This is what I got.
This is the Mac/PC version. If you look at our AmpliTube iRig playlist you'll find the iPhone version. We're currently looking at the platform but do not have any versions for Android.

Imageing all the fine stuff you could do with it!
You could use it as an effect to plug in to your amp. (maby quite alot of effects, if you can make your own sounds. And with new developing you never have to buy a new effect-pedal again.. ).
A strummer for electric guitar in the studio/rehearsal place.
Play with earplugs on the sofa.

your phone only has one 3.5mm jack plug...and you need to plug a guitar into it and an amp into it too.

I am amazed that this can be done on the iPhone but not on Android.
There is another program called Ghettoamp on the market, though the devloper admits that there is still latency (he records, then processes the sound input). 20ms I think.

Android phones definitely have the processing power to do this. The only real problem is you're input and outputs on your phone, there's really only one... the 3.5 mm jack...
But there's maybe a way around this. And I'm not an engineer or developer or genius of any kind I'm just saying what I think should be at least possible... Everyone knows AD2P Bluetooth right? You could get you're input through it.
You use the microphone of a bluetooth headset, but instead of the microphone, you get your input from you're amp/guitar/whatever... could it be as simple as soldering a headphone jack to the PCB connections on a bluetooth headset? Dunno but let's asume it's possible.
Then you connect your phone to the headset, and you've got input... Great.
The problem now is that I don't know what android does when it has a bluetooth headset AND a normal set of earphones... Does it play from both, does it by default choose, I don't know... Say you still get output from the headphones, you could easily get the output to any speakers, seems rather pointless to use the phone's loudspeaker... This part from bluetooth input to audio jack output will maybe need a modified audio driver or something...
Once you've got input into the phone and output out of the phone, you would like to have some effects and/or amplification right? That's the point isn't it? I know nothing about programming such things but maybe a few developers who do will stumble onto this thread and share their expertise...
Once again it should be possible, but for just anyone to do this it'll be very challenging, more likely and hopefully companies like Gibson or Marshall or Ibanez (their Japanese, and this seems like a Japanese thing to do) for instance will see the need for something like this, and get working on it... And once one company does it, all will have some variant of the concept. I know I'd buy this...

You are thinking much too complicated.
The headphone jack of phones contains another pin for the microphone. A small jumper cable can be used that allows the connection of a guitar and headphones. Check out Amplitube iRig for an example.
(this type of jack is used so you can plug in a headset with microphone)
Bluetooth or something would be nice... but the latency wouldn't be, and that is exactly the problem.. Android has too much latency,

Android is not capable of this because the way it handles audio is completely wrong. More recent devices have less latency but still too much. The problem lies very deep. It is a problem for game developers too. Please star this issue if you want Google to do something about it!

The Irig will work fine for this you dont need bluetooth aor usb adding yet another layer of BS to the audio streams round trip. however now that JB is out latancy is stitting around 10-12ms on adevice such as the galaxy nexus wich is completely usable (1ms of latancy = 1foot from your amp) so 12ms would be like playing 12 feet from your amp,
If you cant play like this then on stage will never work for you.
As a side note usb audio is apparently supported in JB as well now
There are now a couple of apps on Android that at least have a range of guitar effects. Delay Effects Plus (via headphone type cable) and usbEffects (USB OTG) both have an option to use Native Audio, so if you have the Galaxy Nexus running JB the latency is quite reasonable (50-70 mSec). If you have a modded ROM you may get lower latency without Native Audio option as they both read the buffer size from the OS. Of course for everyone else the latency is still an issue and varies from device to device. So to those that said they would buy .... please do!
This very issue has put me on the fence on what kind of tablet I buy. Cannot decide between note, and Ipad 3. The accessories and ItunesU has been one of the biggest attractions for me.
Litlle heads up: in their latest newsletter IK Multimedia (of Amplitube) post a few job openings, one of them being "Android App Developer"!

[Q] Releasing custom Android Built TV Box? Is it possible?

Hey there, i hope i`m right in here and you pros can answer me some questions.
We are currently building a new software which will be released soon, i won`t go into details in here, because we not ready to release some infos about it yet. Anyway, thats not the problem....
Here is my question: Our Software could expand to TVs and now we are searching on how to get our solution onto TV Screens. We cam across all those Android based TV Boxes, we ordered some and tested them, unfortunatly they didn`t offer everything we needed.
Sooo, is it possible to release a custom Android Installation on such a Box?
What if we get the blank hardware boxes, can we get an Android Installation up and running? (With the paid help of some XDA-Developers..)
We would really need a stripped down Version only with our APP and some other stuff running.
Also another question, if it is possible to release a custom box, is it legal to Google`s Terms?
We are brand new in this field, so please be so kind and help us out. If it is possible and we can implement this thing we are definitly will be going over xda-developers, because we just don`t have any clue about Android Systems.

We all know that Android is flexible enough to be put on phones, tablets, laptops, and TVs. FXI, a technology lab based in Norway, decided to add USB drives to Android’s host of platforms.
FXI’s Cotton Candy USB device might look like any other flash drive, but it packs smartphone parts like a dual-core 1.2GHz Samsung Exynos processor and its own ARM GPU for 1080p video playback. It also has lots of connectivity, including Wi-Fi, HDMI, Bluetooth, and a MicroSD card slot to expand its 1GB of storage.
This Raspberry Pi-eqsue miniature PC comes with Android 2.3 (also known as Gingerbread). When you plug it into a PC or Mac, it automatically bring up a separate pop up for the Gingerbread OS. This functionality could be used to bring Android apps or games to any computer. Alternatively, if your HDTV has HDMI ports, you could potentially turn it into a smart, Internet-connected monitor.

The only down side of the device is that it is not supported by Google, so you won’t be browsing the marketplace anytime soon. Instead, FXI is working to get a third-party app store together. For now, though, you'll have to side-load any apps you want to run on it.

And we would need a custom Android installation on one of these boxes? As asked above, is this possible and legal?

i don't know the exact details about, but I think getting regular linux to run on a set op box is easier and cheaper to customize with exactly the software you want it.
It doesn`t have to be Android. Andorid was just a possible solution we found and the other reason is that i`m capable of programming apps for Android so it was the closest possibility.

Lets tell you at least some details. The Box should run only with our application, and should be able to be connected to a TV where the application is started then and does their thing. It`s a specialized kind of Software Application for targeted companys.
What it should be able to do:
At least an output resolution of 1280 * 720
Connectable with HDMI, DVI etc. to Televisions
As you say Linux, are you capable of doing such a thing? We might need you...
Or do you have some resources where we can find some developer who can achieve this?

I think any experienced linux dev is capable of doing such a thing, not that difficult. Get a good supported distro, remove all the bells and whistles and let it just boot to your application. I think that is the most elegant solution. Android is much more difficult to customize in such a way. I might have the technical skills to pull it off, but I'm not interested, sorry.
It all depends on your needs and resources. Try googling for embedded linux. linuxfordevices.com is a good place to start i think.
Why the choice for a setopbox and not a regular application? In call centers and other businesses normal programs are used to display information on a large screen, while running on a regular OS. The cost of having to develop and deliver support on not only the software, but also on the setopbox and its embedded OS is quite large. You have to take that into account. Given that you post this question on this forum, I suspect that your resources are rather limited. If I were you, I would reconsider the choice for a setop box.
First, thx for your time...and second, i understand what you mean in your post, but our software already runs on Mac OS, Windows and iOs, so we already have an application running. The settopbox would just be an addition, because some of our customers might need such a thing. Thats the reason why i`m doggling around searching for some ideas.
Our resources are limited sure, but not too limited, the reason why i posted here, is because i`m searching for answers here too, and xda is always a good place to ask in my opinion. We are going other ways too, let me make that clear!
So, i understand what you meant by Linux, i am now contacting some Linux devs who might want to achieve this.

[Q] SGS2 (i9100) USB Audio Out functionality

Dear XDA people,
I have not found any conclusive topic on whether it's possible (or is already done) to enable USB audio output (to a DAC obviously) on the SGS2. Some shreds of relevant topics have crossed my path, but they all either died out or were for different models.
So: What is the status? What's the roadblock? Is there in fact already a rom/kernel which has this enabled?

Not currently possible & unlikely to be on the SGS2 tbh. Devs who have been asked to have a look at it have gone 'nup' & don't have the time/inclination to work on it (blame Samsung).
Only chance of it happening would be to code it yourself or for a dev who actually wants to use that functionality themselves to have a go at it. People have started threads on here where people have pledged X amount of $ if a dev can get this working, but these threads fall off the radar due to lack of interest fairly quickly & there have been no takers on the dev side.
I wouldn't hold your breath.

From the comments I've seen from the devs who have been asked, it's a case of not having to mess around with/spend a lot of time dealing with Samsung's ****ty closed source drivers etc. Take CM9 as an example, those guys have been doing that since the first ICS leaks were released late last yr & frankly I don't blame them for being fed up.
Most people don't realise exactly how much work goes into making things work on a custom rom (a real one; not a winzip job like 80% of 'roms' on here), getting this to work would not be a walk in the park.
And the other thing is many (most) people also have a dedicated media player which puts out much better sound than the SGS2 anyways.

Yeah don't get me wrong -- I appreciate the work that goes into messing with this stuff (especially the process of discovering how it actually works, the reverse engineering of sorts). I just thought that this was a pretty big feature to have and was surprised there was so little to find about it.
And yeah, I also have a better media player (Cowon D2), but the integration into a single device is the attractive part obviously, and unfortunately the SGS2 doesn't have the good audio chip that the SGS1 does have (Stupid Samsung).
Yep using the Yamaha chip in the SGS2 was a puzzling move given how universally praised the sound quality was on the SGS, and made even more puzzling by Samsung going back to a Wolfson chip on the SGS3. A moment of madness perhaps. Every review of the SGS3 I've read so far has said the sound quality is very good.

And that is exactly the reason why this feature should be enabled
There are quite a few people who enjoy high quality portable audio. Many of them use portable headphone amplifiers as standard headphone outputs on devices are quite often unable to properly drive high(er) end headphones. Many of these portable headphone amplifiers also have an USB DAC on board for use with a computer.
Being able to use USB Audio out on your phone would mean one less device to lug around. The quality of the Android devices audio components would no longer matter, as the external DAC/Amplifier would take over their function.
Just imagine, no more worries about what DAC is put in a phone, as you would be free to choose your own external DAC.
Galaxy S3 can do it, some tablets can do it, so hopefully someone will be inspired to make this happen on the S2 and other devices.
I hear the arguments & agree with you (I personally would use it), but it's very unlikely to happen for the SGS2. Samsung have made it very very difficult to do by way of the Yamaha sound chip & their ****ty closed source drivers/firmware, and devs who have been asked so far have looked at it & gone 'Nup'.
So, as I said in my post above, unless you find a dev with a fair bit of time on their hands who actually wants to use this themselves, it probably won't happen.
Edit - @Coop: Have a look at this post by Entropy in the CM9 thread re: proprietary code/the crap devs have to deal with. Just to give you a bit of background as to why the devs who have been asked to date have all said no.

[Question] Atrix as Mediastation with Media-Dock?

Hi Guys,
as I'm thinking of getting a new phone sooner or later, I was thinking how to use my Atrix and my Multimedia-Dock later on.
I never used the Lapdock mode or HDMI mirroring, but I bought the multimedia dock because it was really cheap and I can use my Atrix as a digital clock also.
So please forgive me if I'm asking questions that only work with the lapdock mode
My idea is:
I want to use the Atrix as a media-station for music (on storage and streaming).
As the multimedia dock as a 3,5mm line-out, I thought this might work. I'm on MIUI V5 with JB right now and just plugging in something in the 3,5mm line-out won't let me listen to any music, as I guess this line-out only works in lapdock-mode, because it will get the audio signal from HDMI (?).
I want to know if this might work with any rom that supports lapdock, because for the functions I want, I don't need the newest Android with the latest features.
Another function that would be awesome is to pair the Atrix via Bluetooth with other devices so the Atrix can play music via BT from other devices. Is this possible, too?
Like: Music on new phone --> BT --> Atrix connected to speakers plays music.
If there are any threats like this already, I'm really sorry, but a quick search didn't give me any results

Indeed, you need to go back to gb or atrics to fully use the hd dock.
You can connect any pendrive to those usb, phone will mount them.
Not sure about bt. Guess is possible

I recently received back an Atrix that I purchased on behalf of a friend sometime ago. I also figured it could perhaps be of use at the mother-in-laws when my son is there. I have another account with xda though it has been so long since I used the forum to post that I could not remember my username! So I just clicked to log in via G+. Its been great seeing that such an old (at least in terms of android developement) device has still got some very good support and excellent contributers. Before my Nexus4 I had a Galaxy S and that got flashed regular from the great work that goes on here.
It didn't take much reading to work out that Atrics looked as if it would suit my needs best for some simple internet use and perhaps media viewing on the Bravia the phone will be hooked to. I am hoping I may also find an XBMC build that will be stable enough to enhance the system! So today I found the time to get the basic Atrics 2.0 up and running, One or two little bugs too work out but am sure they will have been covered already. Installed FlashFox browser to make sure flash works without any hassles and just completed a rom backup and upgrade of the kernel to 14-02-05. The difference is noticeable straight away Krystian, good work.
I'll try to keep up with my project and how it goes. How is your project working out muhski?

So I set up everything up nicely using the atrics ROM. Due to the TV and setup at the mother in laws, using the stereo out on the dock was not viable. This forced me to roll back to Nottatrix4g for a quick fix of using the HDMI to pass sound as well as audio. As a result I have a nice portable setup which will reside at the mother in laws for my son to use and perhaps his grandad too. I kept the ROM install as slim as possible without removing any functionality that may be required if we take the system on holiday for example. I installed several addons in xbmc and went through each to check the ones that wouldn't work easily for example asking for an external player, (the ones that did work easily all diverted to mxplayer). I added both Firefox and dolphin for flash based browsing, a couple of the games he plays on my Nexus 4 and an emulator to play the games I still have from the NES. The emulator is tied into wiimote for an easier experience for him although I would have preferred a more manageable pad but since that's as good as free.
So the the real test will start tomorrow, my main concern would be the system recovering from any crashes but up to now with the exception of xbmc occasionally closing, I have only had one issue with Bluetooth and the mouse showing paired but not. I deleted the db and that resolved the issue which I was unable to replicate.
So my experience would be to tell you if a similar project was looked at, check your hardware and see how the audio can connect best. If you can only do audio with HDMI stay on 2.x.x ROM, if you can stereo from the dock into the TV by RCA's or an amplifier you can use atrics ROM or a 2.x.x based ROM. Other than this you shouldn't need to spend too long finding a good use to a redundant Atrix.
The xbmc version came from xbmcandroid as the official xbmc does no longer support tegra² chips. If your reading this regarding a newer phone then the official version may suit you better.
