Limit app background data for Google Play Services - Push notifications does not work - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm still investigating on my battery drain problem apparently related to Google Play services (here a dedicate thread on which I described it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/help/google-play-services-battery-drain-t3537545 ).
Summing, all things for now are pointing to one, and not so positive, thing: Mobile radio active bug (here more details: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=190396)
After the little introduction, here comes the more general part.. I've found that using the WiFi connection my drain problem is totally gone, more than this, I see that Google Play Services exchanged a lot of background data when I am using mobile data (2G/3G/4G) .
Due to this I tried, from the Google Play Services app settings, to active the "Limit app background data" option and with my pleasure I saw that this was fixing my drain problems also with mobile data!
"All fantastic!" I said.. not at all, doing this I saw that I lost push notifications while receiving messages on whatsapp, messenger, hangout and so on.. and unfortunately this is very inconvenient.
Do you know if there is a way to mantain the "Limit app background data" option on but assuring all the right push notifications functionalities?
Thanks in advance for your answers and for your help.
Have a nice day

If your phone is rooted and xposed ready , you may try greenify to hibernate.
First I thought is it a stupid app which just force closes applications.
But after using it , It just felt different.Phone was blazingly fast , Battery Drain issue was Gone completely.
And I still get push notifications from Whatsapp , Uber , Facebook etc.
It is worth trying greenify even without root.
Cheers

[Q] google talk always on - battery drain?

Something that is catching my attention as i mess with roms, is whenever I first sign into google services the google talk app is immediatly alerting me i have invite requests etc. meaning that app seems to be sitting in the background running and probing for network access. Clearly a battery drain, but I cant find a way to disable this behaviour short of freezing the app in titanium backup.
Have google really been this silly and put an social chat app on the OS that is forcefully always running unless removed?
On GB roms there is an option to not auto sign in, on ICS/JB roms (and also on GB if you update it to hangout app) there is no way to avoid auto signing in.
So am I right the app cannot be turned off, and is there any known ill affects to freezing the app?
Freeze it. It's always the first thing I freeze when I do a clean install.

[GUIDE] Speeding up any ROM (simple, but sour)

Hi there!
First of all I'm not a really big ROM magician nor a programmer/ developer, and I know for some people I wont tell any new thing with this thread/ post.
As everyone knows, our phones (U,Sola,GO) have 512 RAM. This is a problem, if there are bloatwares on our phone thus slowing it down. But what if there is no BW?? The answer: Yes, there is... three words: Google Play Services.
We can (finally) take advantage of Android app collection! Every application that needs Google Play Services has an alternative. Google Play Services is eating up our phone, especially the fresh versions. Just try to uninstall it from your phone, delete dalvik and cache then reboot, use the phone for some minutes, reboot again. Then you will see that it's much faster because there are more free RAM for the apps that are important in everyday usage, because Play Services is not sitting in the RAM.
BTW Google Play will still work without Google Play Services (but I think Google Services will be needed, but it's light).
OK, So that's all I just wanted you to know. I don't wanted to write this into any ROM's thread because it's generally usable info.

I'm using devswift's 4.1.2 unofficial JB ROM, and I've not met any problem after I've uninstalled Play Services. Ok, Hangouts not working anymore (using TalkSecure instead), but as I said there are lot of alternatives for applications.
So I'm curious what application's push notification needs Google Play Services that can't be replaced with other alternative?
BTW the phone is really faster without G.P.S. Erm... and there are no wakelocks because of the newest version's wearable service if you uninstall it

Push on Android devices are only desserved by Google Play Services
I seriously don't understand. I mean push notifications are working for me with incoming SMS, missed call, Talk (hangout) message... etc.
As I've mentioned I have Google Services Framework (4.1.2-485486), and it's light on RAM and the push notifs are working.
I don't know if it's equals an older version of G.P.S or its a different thing. If it's an older version, then the problem is with the new(est) versions of G.P.S.
By the way thanks for the answers and enlightement!

When I say Push notifications I talk about Internet applications who send live notifications without open apps like Twitter, Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Tumblr, Tapatalk, Snapchat, PayPal, Foursquare and many more
Ahhh, okay, then this is why I haven't seen the missing notifications... because I never used any internet apps that uses push
Ok, so thanks for the information, it's good to know. I'll don't miss this feature, but someone may. So thanks again.
It's actually a very useful feature. If you turn off location reporting and switch auto sync off, your device will work faster with some more battery backup.

This.
Yes, remove Play Services from your phone will make your phone faster. Play Services is kinda useful for some apps. Without Play Services they may even cannot launch. Well, it is a paradox.
Just froze those unnecessary apps, and unfreeze when needed , that is what I do.
Many apps won't work without Google Play Services.

Facebook and Messenger won't hibernate

Hello guys, I have a problem with the Facebook and Messenger app, they don't hibernate even if I manually hibernate them.
I tried cutting off the wakelock path, ignoring running state and enabling deep hibernation, but even after that I open the app to find them in the "will hibernate when screen is off" section. They've been draining my battery crazily!
Any other suggestions to do?
Same here. I think a recent Messenger update somehow changed something that prevents Greenify from hibernating it. I am using Lolliop via CM 12.1 Nighly (the very last one before CM 13).
I thought so too and rolled back to some older version, still the same problem with no luck. It's extremely frustrating.
Having the same problem here after their latest update.
Same problem, I mean I only lost like 4% over 5 hours but it should be a lot less, it was Facebook and messenger in my partial wakelocks
I used amplify to limit the wakelocks by them, the wakelock is called bugreporter and so far it hasn't affected notifications, and now they don't keep the device awake anymore.
You can also download older versions which didn't cause the issue here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64816556&postcount=28
so any news about this yet?

What about the post above yours? That not sufficient for you?
Same here, gets woken by LollipopSerivce and stays up for hours until I manually killed it with "put in to hibernation now"
details:
CM13 nightly 20160116
Xposed 79,
Greenify 2.8 beta 9
Same with me, i uninstalled FB but i need messenger for chatting
Also the persistant notification from Messenger seems to prevent it from sleeping (Sequence : Messenger is hibernating, I receive a GCM push that wake him up but then it keep being "up" if i don't throw away the pop-up....). Or maybe i'm totally wrong dunno
CM13
Xposed
Greenify Beta 9
Same problem
Same here, really frustrating.
Same here, I came here to look if there's anyone else with this problem.
I don't want to install amplify just for fb and msn.

Workaround
This may be a workaround for now but this is what I did: I tapped on Facebook to highlight it. I then tapped the three-dot menu and selected "Put into hibernation now". A popup then showed-up warning of possible data loss or functionality problems. There is a checkbox in the popup for "Always ignore app state". I ticked it and continued. I did the same procedure for Messenger.
They usually get rid of this trick
With Amplify it's ok.. no more drain from messenger..
SAme problem, back to 2.8 and it´s working
Same here now with notification from greenify... ****ing facebook wakes u every 5min... Anoying.. With the only 2gb ram my phone laggs... Lg g3... Anyway. I will uminstall ans see if my phone gets faster
I had the same problem. I installed greenfy free and saw what wakes up my apps... After i installed " Disable Services " and disable two services. It works for me in facebook, i dont know about messenger. Sorry my bad english.

[ROOT]Temporally solution for WiFi and overall battery drain on MM fw.

Hi, i will share you what worked in my e2306 to fix the annoying Wifi drain. You need an app that let you disable broadcast receivers like RoomToolBox or MyAndroidTools. We are going to disable some Google Play Services receivers.
Open the app you choose to work, navigate to receivers and then DISABLE the following in GPLAY services app:
SystemUpdateServiceActiveReceiver
SystemUpdateServiceOtaPolicyReceiver
SystemUpdateServiceReceiver
SystemUpdateServiceSecretCodeReceiver
And then reboot.
No need to activate STAMINA mode. No need to choose GPS to power saving, no need to disable WiFi/BT location scan.
Ive tested for like 10 days or so. The overnight drain downed to 2% it was like 7%. Also now battery is as good as in LP fw, 1 and 1/2 day with moderate to heavy usage.
Attached screenshoot of two diferent charge cycles.

As for now, i didnt noticed anything broken, but it might deppend what you do with your device.
I ussualy do the following with my phone:
*Using Google stuff like maps with gps accurate mode, Location history etc.
*Using google chrome and other browsers.
*Using google fit with realtime activity detection.
*Gmail / Email / Sms / Whastapp.
*Some gaming 2D / 3D / Console Emulators.
*The whole time at home WiFi connected, LTE/3g outside. (I never turn off wifi even when im out)
*Xposed with a variety of modules (app settings, apm+, and more..)
*Apps via playstore, music app, camera, weather and clock widgets, Root thingy like KernelAdiutor, Lucky Patcher, fstrimm. A large etc.
I can confirm that all these things seems to work ok, havent had any problem

A few of those were already disabled (perhaps by amplify).
For some reason i had multiple AccountsChangedReceiver from Google Services (all with that same name), with one bieng already disabled, so i left those as they were.
For now everything seems to still work. I'll report if I notice anything. Thanks for the tip!
Hmm so it wasnt only me, i have TWO AccountsChangedReceiver(android.accounts.LOGIN_ACCOUNTS_CHANGED) and one was already disabled before i touch anything, and few others i dont remember. Im going to check by restoring a backup and report here
Makes no difference here.
I did notice a big boost in battery duration. I'd say about 4 hours more. Though of course one should do a serious test to assert this.
I also noticed now playstore won't download updates if the screen is off. I get a message saying background data has been disabled when i turn the screen back on if playstore was downloading something.
Does this happen to you too? Worth it in any case.

Do you use STAMINA?
In my case background data is ok and all the things that deppends of it are working fine, as for playstore i always disable autoupdates and i do them manually to prevent unwanted "new features" you know.. so i cant confims this last one. I never use stamina mode though.
Btw by restoring my backup i got the same result untouching anything but the last 4 receivers ive stated in the post so i dont thing the first 3 that also apperas to be duplicated are relevant, gonna edit it.

I normally don't, although it could've been automatically activated. I just tried downloading an app and turning off the screen for a while (while it was staarting to download). When i turned it back on it actually had installed so perhaps that was random.
Is there any way to do this on a LBL/nonrooted phone? As my BL can't be unlocked, and wifi battery drain is very proeminent, like 1% per 2-3 minutes.
There is no battery drain if you did proper clean install... Just wait for few days it will dissapear from battery list. I am getting 6 hours sot and 2 days battery life
Obivously clean install, stock rom, CE1, using flashtool, wipe user data.

EMUI 9.1 update - all notifications late or not appearing

I know this is a topic existing over internet, I've googled it extensively, but up to now I haven't found a solution.
I've got a non-pro Mate 10, the Chinese version AL-00, rebranded to International/Global ALP L-29.
Approximately two to three weeks ago I got an update from 9 to EMUI 9.1, and maybe a week later, another update as a security patch. The current version of the software is 9.1.0301 (C636E2R1P12).
After the system update, I normally updated all the apps that needed updating and cleaned the phone's cache from bootloader. And although now I once again receive notifications from Google play when an app needs updating (I stopped receiving those a while back for an unknown reason), I stopped receiving notifications for virtually any messaging service or social network, including Gmail app.
To be more specific, when using Gmail, Facebook Messenger, Viber, Whatsapp LinkedIn or some other, I do not get notified of new messages/posts/emails whatever, UNLESS I am using the phone at that particular moment, or unless I am using that specific app at that moment. That also applies for my bank's custom app which should normally notify me instantly as soon as some expense occurs on my card. A few times it even happened that I would receive and reply to a FB message, close the app and like an hour later would receive a notification that that specific person messaged me.
This only started happening after that last update.
I tried turning off battery optimization for each and every single of those apps, I tried switching App launch to manual. It literally makes no difference. Force stopping and cleaning the cache of the apps doesn't help as well.
While I could live with it when it comes to FB or LinkedIn, I cant have Gmail or FB Messenger holding my messages for so long without notifying me. I need them for my work and sometimes time is of the utmost essence.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated
EDIT: I just noticed that I'm having same problems with Google Keep app when using reminders
Please, guys, help!

Do you have root? Try freezing powergenie app, it should allow the notifications to come on time. The only issue is there might be a "slight" battery drain from more apps allowed to run in background. That was a dirty fix that worked even in emui 8/9 and peps seemed to have no issues even after the mod.
Since emui 9.1 introduces erofs file system, you'll have to either freeze the app in question everytime you reboot or create magisk module that during boot replaces contents of /system/app/HwPowerGenieEngine3 with empy folder - I'm not sure how removing odex files affects the thermals so I suggest just removing apk file and keeping everything else from the original directory intact if the temps and phone performance behave odly after doing this.
Feel free to give it a try, but I don't think it's actually worth doing it. The old forum post suggesting this mod actually overlooked the importance of power genie when it comes to temps + performance regulations across the board. Without it the temps will rise, phone won't supercharge and the performance will dip.
I'm actually playing around with this rn, trying to remove thermal limits on per app basis, if I come across anything I'll let ya know. Good luck
Have you made test on both mobile network and on WLAN? And what provider do you use with this phone? I see OP1 and VIP in your profile, probably outdated.

Yep I did, sometimes switching between WiFi and mobile network does activate the apps to check for new messages/mail, and sometimes it doesn't. I haven't noticed any clear pattern.
And it must be difference between XDA forums and the app. I swear I switched it when I bought the Mate. But I'm still on VIP/A1

No I haven't, but now that I checked, it was turned on all the time. However, knowing that sometimes this actually works, I toggled it off and back on several times and restarted the phone. I'll pay closer attention during the day to see if that helped and report back here. Thanks for the suggestion.

Here's an update: Turning off and on the "Stay connected" option did not help at all, the real proof is that i received an email notification of cheeze.keyk replying to this thread, and I only saw it when I logged in on my PC. The phone did not notify me at all.
So the problem still persists, unfortunately. I am really hoping that I won't have to make a factory reset, although it is also uncertain if that would help at all.
totally bummed. my Mate 10 Pro screen just went crazy. It now has a bright green line all across the very bottom of the screen. And the whole screen now has a faint "screen door" effect going on. just enough to be irritating. I doubt I can live with it, but I loved this phone.

These two screenshots show show which apps I have frozen/disabled and which of the Google based apps have and don't have battery optimisation activated.
This essentially hasn't changed since I bought the phone over a year ago. Do you think I should do something with these apps or change some of their settings?

Nope, data saver has been turned off and moreover, most of the apps seem to be ticked as an exception if it ever gets turned on
Hope that you put all checkmarks on Google Play Services and all other apps you have notifications problem.
Well as you can see, considering Google's apps, all is good.
I mean this one in Settings > Battery > App launch > Three dots > Manage manually, have a look on attachment.
So, my Email client, Google Play services, Moj Telekom, Viber and WhatsApp have set all three options: auto-launch, secondary launch and run in background. With this setup, I have no problems at all.
