SGP512 faulty screen? - Xperia Z2 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello and good day.
I wondering if anyone here knows the Xperia Z2 Tablet well enough to help me proceed to the next step in getting my xperia z2 tablet back in working order.
A little history; I used the tablet on/off when I first bought it, then life took over and I had no time or use for the tablet. Now with a new job starting in 2 weeks time, I could very much do with getting the tablet to work.
I thought the tablet was in some sort of Sleep of Death but it appears that was not the case; I originally tried all the different button combinations, letting it discharge and recharge, used PC Companion to repair, Used Flashtools to repair.
Now, the strange bits; the tablet won't respond to button presses UNLESS I have the micro usb cable plugged in either by charging or connected to a PC/Laptop; whilst connected to a charger it will do the 3 vibrations/led routine. when connected to PC/Laptop it will pretty instantly go in to fastboot mode. and this is the strange part, reboot the device in to system (I also have to quickly remove the USB cable) and can hear it boot up.
all that happens with NOTHING on the screen.
So I had an idea; I attached an MHL cable. Lo and behold I have a picture on my TV, but still nothing on the tablet.
So does any one know where to go from here? could it be a lose connection to the screen??

Seems like a faulty logic/mother board
just need to find a source..

[Q] No charge, No MTP initialize, zero USB activity

Hey guys, thanks for dropping by.
I have a very wierd problem, that I just cant figure out.
It all started the other day, when I found my tablet dead after having been left on and charging during the night. The tab was dead, and I feared the worst. After having left it on what seems to me like a trickle charge for several hours, I managed to get it up and running, and the tab seems fine, it was just completely out of juice.
But my troubles are not over. Whenever I'd connect the tab to the wall charger, I'd only get the red "X" symbol in the corner, and it would say MTP Initialize, even though its plugged into the standard OEM wall charger that comes with.
When I connect the tablet to my computer using the same cable, nothing happens, and by that I mean nothing. Computer doesn't start the connection process at all, its not recognized in the device manager, nothing. Not even Odin can see the tablet when I put it in download mode, the tab keeps saying "Waitting USB Cable..."
Tried this on 2 computers, still no luck, even using a USB plug on the motherboard instead of front-usb.
Now, the tablet will "trickle charge" from both the wall charger, and the computer, but nothing else happens.
I figured it could've been the ROM, so I got the latest ICS Kanang ROM downloaded, transferred it to my tab using Bluetooth, and flashed this without hassle, but the problem still persists, only now showing a regular charge icon in the lower right section, but it is still only trickle charging as far as I can tell.
All I can figure is a defective USB cable, or even worse, defective port on the tablet itself, but I'm not sure. I've ordered a new cable from DealExtreme, that will hopefully arrive sooner rather than later.
But seeing as the tab is hardly 4-5 weeks old, I find it difficult to believe the cable is the problem.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm all out at this point, so any pointers is very appreciated. Thanks.
It could be the cable. It's the part you have used in each situation. I'd wait for the cable to arrive and test it with the tablet when you get it.

Hey, thanks for the reply.
Yeah, I really really hope this is the case, time will tell, DealExtreme is not the quickest dealer. I'll update when I get it.
The new cable came from DX, but I'm afraid it showed no difference on anything.
The cable is working just as the original one, so that's not the problem.
Anyone have any ideas?
I guess my main goal at the moment is flashing it back to stock and un-rooting so I can get it repaired.
You mind posting a screenshot, it's kinda hard to imagine what you see by what you read For all I know my imagination went from a red X to the corner to something like an X off battousai's face.
Then again, I'd be glad to help, provided you post screenies, would be a major help
Ah, yes, I will take screenshots of anything you want to see.
Right now im on ICS preview, and these are some snapshots WITH the cable connected.
The red "X" I'm talking about you can see on the first picture on the charging icon, this happened even when the wall charger was connected on gingerbread/overcome experience rom.
The other pictures you can see it says discharging. Now, this was taken when connected to the computer, and I guess that's normal, but it also happens exactly the same when connected to the wall charger that came with the unit.
If you want screenshots of anything else, ill get it asap!
I took a poorly image of the tab connected via USB, to my computer with Odin open, hopefully you can see what it says.
If not its just what happens, I don't get further.
By the screenshots, Is the language Swedish?
Then again thanks for providing the screenies
In your first screenshot that could be part of the theme, or was it never there previously? I don't really know if it's not charging or that's supposed to be the charging icon, because for some odd reason on ICS preview I don't see that red icon anywhere.
As for the tablet, the reason why you aren't detecting it seems as though you don't have the drivers on the PC, I don't know if you installed them or you didn't mention it because I never found it being mentioned in your reply. I know it sounds silly but the same thing happened to me when I was using the tablet, (originally my 3G series belonged to my dad who knew nothing about modding so he just gave it to me and said, "do your thing" ) He did also forget to mention that you require to have the drivers to detect it via Device Manager and MTP in general, shortly the COM port will show up aswell. Perhaps re-installing the drivers should do the trick?
Made me wonder how did you install ICS in the first place if you weren't able to have it read? But I realized you could have downloaded the zip file via the tablet, On another note, how did you install CWM in the first place? o.o
Hehe, almost! Its in Norwegian on the honeycomb picture.
The red "X" would show up whenever i was connected to the PC via USB, to indicate its not charging. It will however "trickle" charge, and take 24h to charge fully with no usage and turned off.
Yes, the red icon is not on ICS, it just says not charging in the about page, as you can see from the screenshot.
Drivers have been reinstalled two or three times on two different PC's, I don't believe this is the issue.
When I bought the unit, it was working 100%
USB was okay, I flashed and rooted the unit over to "Overcome Experience".
From there I transferred ICS preview via Bluetooth and installed that way.
Have you tried factory reset to make sure all modules are reset? Maybe the USB charge module in Overcome is conflicting.
Yes.
Factory reset 3-4 times on the two different roms. I've reset everything I could find, without success.
Perhaps it has gone faulty with the tablet's plug in port, someone had the same issue although it was his wire that was at fault, it detects the charge via USB but not enough volt's to be detected by the PC, has it been grounded? Seem's more likely :| Might have to get it checked in your local center perhaps, It's how I mentioned that any metallic object is able to relay electricity despite being broken or not, you may have a broken pin for all I know :|
Hi,
I'm having exactly the same issue with my 1 month old tab 7+. I tested it using my bosses charge cable and there is no issue so I need to go to the service centre for a warranty replacement on the cable.
Hope you sort out your issue soon!
Thanks, but I don't think I have any other choice to deliver it to Samsung Europe as a payable service to get it fixed.
Purchased on a American store, and I doubt they'll take it back with flashed software.
I'm not sure really, I'll see what I end up doing. Its not the cable, that's for sure.

i9300 USB Port Issue?

G'day guys
On Sunday I noticed my SIII making random noises but nothing was ever on the screen when I checked. While playing with it, it made the noise again and I noticed the driving mode icon appear in the notification bar for a second. I decided to update to the latest version of Omega 9 to see if that would fix the issue. Did the usual, backup, wipe, flash - all good. Omega 9 was running fine but my phone did continue to make the noise randomly. Ignoring it and continuing on my day I plugged my SIII in to charge while playing music, I picked it up like an hour later and realised that the battery life had gone down rather than charge. Naturally I started plugging it into all the micro USB cables I could find, connected to the power adapter, connected to my PC, connected to my car charger, nothing would connect and give it a charge properly! I managed to get 1 cable to connect for a second but then it would just disconnect. While I was trying to get it to charge it was randomly displaying the message that appears when you connect a USB OTG cable too, 'USB connector connected' - or something a long those lines.
I pulled the battery out of my phone, let it sit for a bit, inserted the battery and it started charging fine. I powered it on and it booted up with the TW launcher (I normally use Apex) and a grey box in the lower left hand corner of the screen that said "Safe Mode". I was just thinking, WTF (should have taken a screen), rebooted my phone and it has since gone back to normal.
It is yet to make any random noises or refuse to charge as of today (Tuesday). I got a bit worried for a bit there as I was dreading having to take it all back to stock and send off for warranty plus the USB port in my cousins SGSII died for about a month and randomly sprang back to life.
If it happens again I will be looking at a warranty as soon as possible. It puzzle me though, I wonder if the cheapo USB OTG cable I purchased off ebay could have damaged the port at all, everything seems fine now though. Has anyone else had any troubles with their USB connection?
Notes* My phone is in perfect condition, no liquid damage or anything.
Sounds like it had a software glitch. Check if it appears again and report here, but you should be fine in most cases.
Btw: Pseudo-Dead (disabled) USB-ports can usually be revived by powering off the phone and inserting a Jig. At least that's how I revived my brother's old Galaxy Ace several times already

Sudden trouble with USB port and fast-charging

All of a sudden the USB port on my one year old V10 is having issues:
Won't "fast-charge" when plugged in to LG fast-charger. But does do and show that it is "regular" slow charging.
When unplugged, status bar battery icon still showing charging animation.
Does not switch (or give option to switch) to data when USB is plugged into computer nor does it appear as device on computer as it did before.
Battery is draining very fast, probably 2-3 times as fast as it should.
Also doing the following, don't know if related to USB issue:
When I power off completely, before, I had to press and hold down power button to power back on, and would also get a quick vibrate.
Now when phone is off, just quickly tapping power button for split second powers on phone and get no vibrate. Also when phone is off, plugging in charging cable powers on phone.
These issues just appeared out of the blue yesterday. Nothing has happened to phone - not dropped, exposed to moisture, didn't install any new apps, flash a rom, nothing new done to phone. It just started happening. :crying:
I would say that this is being caused by one of 2 things:
1. Bad charging adapter and/or cable. Either use another charger/cable, or buy an original LG fast charger replacement from somewhere like Amazon. 3rd-party stuff may or may not work out well, I would stick with LG if you want to play it safe.
2. The actual charging port on the phone is bad. In this case, no charger/cable will fix it. This will probably mean buying a new phone, unless you have warranty/insurance, the cost of getting it repaired won't be justifiable.
So far one of my 2 LG cables have gone bad, developed a split in the wire, now it charges my phone sometimes, but sometimes not. And it rarely works for copying files to/from PC. My other cable works fine for the most part.

I have 2 OEM LG Fast Charge 2.0 cable and brick sets, the one it originally came with plus another one I bought. I also have a second OEM battery and LG battery cradle. I've tried all these plus others I have and all get the same result.
I mostly use the cradle to keep the second battery charged and swap them out as needed each day, so I don't actually do much charging on the phone. I also use SambaDroid to move files to a PC, so the only real problem this is causing is rapid battery drain. I'm no expert but I'm guessing there's a pin in the USB port that is shorting somehow and that it's causing the battery to drain. Any hardware experts out there? I need this phone to last another year so am willing to try minor surgery if it would help and if I can find a good guide to follow.
Edit: SambaDroid not working in Marshmallow. I also sometimes just take out the SD card and pop it in a card reader.

SGP311 brick - no usb signal at all, no boot, some led blinks...

Hi,
Please, be patient while reading this post, this is a looong explanation of the brick I am facing...
I recently was given a non working XTZ SGP311 and tried to get it back to life. As I have another one SGP311 (this one is perfectly working), I am able to check many things.
I read most of topics about XTZ unbrick but can't find any way to get it back working.
The problem is that I can't have any signal from usb (data or power). I use a genuine Sony USB cable and genuine Sony charging adapter (coming from the working SGP311). The led always stays off.
I tried the different combos as described (vol- and power ; vol+ and power ; vol+ and vol- and power) during 5, 10, 20, 30 seconds (yes, quite complete tests).
I did a cross check of batteries and inside usb connector ribbon (yes, had to open both tablets for that), the working tablet continues to work with the 2 parts coming from the faulty one (battery coming from dead tablet was 0% charged), so the problem is not on the side of the inside usb connector neither on the side of a supposed dead battery. The faulty tablet doesn't boot, even with a fully charged battery inside.
I luckily own a XTZ dock (SGPDS5) that allows to charge without using usb connector (it uses the 2 contacts located on the left side of the tablet). That's the only way to get something...
Soooo, when I put the bricked tablet on its dock, the red led flashes very slowy (say, 1 second off, 1 second on red, and so on).
When I press vol- and power, nothing happens (no matter 5/10/15/20/25 seconds).
When I press vol- and vol+ and power, idem.
When I press vol+ and power : I got the sequence blinks once white led / blinks 3 times white led (after that goes to slow red blinking about if I keep the keys pressed). So not completely dead.
If I unplug it from the dock right after the third white blink, plug the usb cable to the tablet, plug it to my laptop (with emma running, tried with pc companion too), and press vol-, then....nothing happens. Really nothing. No led lit. No detection of anything from the laptop (or device manager as well). It would have been the same if I would have kept it unplugged.
To sum it up, the only thing I can have is 1 or 3 white blinks after having plugged the SGP311 on its docks.
IMO, the trouble comes from a faulty component inside the tablet. Maybe the one that manages the connection from the usb ribbon plug. I checked the tiny plugs inside the tablet (once dismantled and back repacked too), all seems in order.
Your help is welcome !
This is similar to an issue I have it sounds like, you can still flash stock rom by holding power + volume till it blinks 3x then plug USB in and hold volume down immediately.
This gives flash mode, you can use flash tool to put stock rom on with this. The issue happens when it's acting like there's no OS it seems. Problem is mines doing this everytime I flash a custom rom, it's fine with stock aside from **** wifi
Thanks for your help. I tried that yesterday and it did not work.
This may be related to the way of reset I use (but I can't have any other).
As I can't get any white blinking led when connected by the tablet micro-usb port, the one and only way to get the 3 times white blinking led is when the XTZ is on its dock (SGP DS5, power connection only by lateral contacts).
What I tried yesterday was to get the 3 time white blinking led (vol+ and Power), then output the tablet off the dock and connect a usb cable to a laptop running Sony Emma (from micro usb tablet port to usb laptop).
Precision : I kept VOL- pressed when pluging usb cable to laptop.
No result at all. No detection (either Emma nor windows).
Any idea ?

Thanks for your advice, I appreciate.
But I swapped batteries from the working XTZ to the non-working one and put a (about) 60% charged battery into the bricked XTZ (both batteries are charging when set into the working XTZ). I will try anyway.
The problem is that the non working XTZ does not charge either through usb or through the dock. The only interest of the dock is that this is only situation where I can have the "triple white led blink" (but nothing more).
That's why I need the working XTZ for charging before doing anything with the non working one.
What I could try would be to connect the lateral contacts with wires to the dock in order to keep an access to the usb tablet micro port and connect it to a laptop.
But this may be hairy as this would give 2 ways for power (one by the dock and the other by the USB port), and may produce a short circuit...
Any XTZ power experts around ?

Well, not a real solution...
I bought a cheap xtz with broken screen and got its working motherboard and put it instead of the other one.I got the lte component too with its antenna and put it into the 1st xtz that was not supposed to have lte.
So now, on one side I have a xtz with faulty motherboard and broken screen, and on the other side a refurbished xtz with LTE !
I like very much this tablet. Very handy, easy to dismantle and easy to swap its components.
The only drawback is no more support for Sony.
Thank you for the answer
So, you are saying that if I replace the motherboard I can fix that ? I'm looking for motherboard on ebay and I found one for $28 usd + shihpping.
Thank you for answering and take care.

Yes. I think this should be good.
Don't care about the exact matching of the product code: as long as it'll be xtz, it'll be good (16 or 32 gb, with or without lte, and any region should match).
Did you opened it already ?
Yes, I opened 2 years ago cuz my son broke the power jack connector then I replaced that twice.
I'm also tech guy, I can replace that, but won't expend more than $50 for a new motherboard. I'm looking on ebay now.
Thank you

Has anyone successfully recovered from the sudden no charging/USB connection issue?

I'm wondering if anyone has suffered with and recovered from the sudden case of no charging/USB>PC recognition?
I've seen countless similar stories across the web, covering many of the Z Family. Some were simple reset jobbies, and I've seen as in-depth as what I'm assuming is an IC being removed, flux cleaned and re-applied (w ww .you tube. com/watch?v=ZyCeNfc99a0).
I purchased a new charger port and also a new battery, as I figured with all the insane constant burning of my pocket, it could use a new one. I'd hoped it was just a charger port issue, but much to my dismay, the issue still persists after fitting them.
I've tried every single button combination "fix", and all to no avail. Multiple leads, charger units, all that polava. Checked and cleaned connections with isopropyl alcohol, checked for burned-out looking mainboard components, at least those that are visible.
I was having minor inconsistent charging issues for a while, up until last Friday. I figured it was the USB port on the phone or the leads, and put it down to general wear and tear.
Last Friday I was at my mates house with super low battery, popped it on charge round his and I noticed it had died completely and kept boot cycling, like the charger was being plugged in and taken out over and over.
I took it out and tried it when I got home with the regular charger, and nothing. My phone is otherwise in mint condition and has been looked after since day one release in the UK.
I'm wondering if some super helpful person here would possibly have some other alternatives that haven't been mentioned, whether a hardware bypass or some trick that isn't amidst the countless cries for help out there.
Many thanks in advance.
Hello,
I have a problem when connecting to a charger it will go in strange charging mode that actually does not charge. It makes the sound like a charger is connected, no charging animation on battery though...
The problem for me it was the USB cable used for charging (i have changed 5 of them in 1 and a half years). Also same behavior happens when using a under 1A wall charger.
P.S. : The USB cables that i have changed they still work fine with other devices/phones .... but not with my Z5C. I`m not sure what but is definetly something wrong withe phone usb port (and it is not dirt).
no, but
I cannot get a usable USB connection to my computer, but if I hold Volume Up while connecting the USB cable to the computer, the charger LED turns red for a moment, then blue. It WILL charge in this mode, which I think is fastboot mode. Someone said it bypasses the charge circuitry or software, which makes me think that maybe I could go into developer mode and turn on OEM unlocking to see if I can stop it from trying to optimize charging. I also have not tried all the USB connection modes yet.
I tried to charge with this blue light technique on the wall charger, but that did not work. Just ran the battery down again and I could not boot the phone.
I know if I press Volume Down while connecting the USB cable to my computer that the charger LED turns green, but I am not sure it will charge in that mode. I think this is for flashing or something, but since my computer does not recognize the USB device no matter what I do, I don't think flashing is an option.
Oh, and when I do charge the phone with the blue light special (old obscure USA discount retailer reference), for some reason the charger LED flashes white every 4 to 5 seconds, but it seems to keep enough charge to get me through at least the day until I can charge again by same method.
Maybe we can keep pooling info here. I got the blue light technique from someone else on this site, so there are people here who know quite a bit about this phone, thankfully.
Well, I had that issue, too (at least it sounds pretty familiar).

Does your phone also believe to be connected to "something" all the time?
I fear there is some IC fried, although I never dared to open my phone.
My "solution" was to talk my local salesman into giving me a (used, but working) replacement phone, and I did not want him to find any traces of DIY
So, no, I never found a technical solution, probably they just scrapped my phone for spare parts, idk.
The root cause for my error (probably) was a faulty charger, therefore I am pretty sure I fried something hardware-like, but depending on your cause, ymmv.
Anyway, trying to clean your USB port, re-soldering the connector and/or replacing the battery sounds like being worth a try, anyway.
// edit: "cat /sys/class/power_supply/usb/present" used to always output 1, even when not connected. On my now-good Z5C this works like it should (connected ->1, not connected -> 0)
Hey people. I have tried all the tricks for several days. Tried several charging cables. Nothing worked for me. I just brought a new phone, and it came with a cheapo charging cable. Decided to plug it into my Xperia and it worked. Maybe a little fairy fixed my phone when I was out buying a new one. Anyway, I'm love my Xperia Z5. Using it right now. Good luck people
