Does Moto Z(unlocked) support: VoLTE, Band 12 and possibly WiFi Calling on T-Mobile? - Moto Z Questions & Answers

Hi! Any one uses or used Moto Z on T-Mobile and can confirm VoLTE, Band 12 and maybe WiFi calling?

I can confirm that Band 12 is supported as that's all I get where I live. It appears to have VoLTE as there's an option to enable "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" which has a descriptor of "Use LTE services to improve voice and other communications (recommended)." Also, I believe one of the requirements from T-Mobile for unlocked devices to use Band 12 is VoLTE capability in order to access E911 services. There's no wifi-calling on the unlocked model.

Thanks for the info! Some of my other phones although did have VoLTE in the settings as you described above, but that feature never worked.
1) So Band 12 is there
2) No WiFi Calling
3) As for VoLTE, could you check if it is really working? Disconnect from wifi, make sure LTE indicator is showing and try to make a call and see if your LTE indicator is still showing or it has changed to a lower indicator 3g or 4g.

I can confirm that VoLTE works. Stays on LTE when I'm making calls.

Now I can buy the phone Thanks again!

VoLTE definitely works. I can hear it when I call people who have T-Mobile because it uses "HD-Voice". It's a shame about the Wifi calling, but you won't find it on any phone that T-Mobile doesn't sell directly because they need to have custom builds of software in order to function. I think it should be a lot easier to enable with just a Wifi APN or something, but maybe that is coming in the future. Also the Wifi calling was honestly buggy as hell on my S7E, it would echo, mute one of the callers, not transfer to LTE when I left range, and video call would freeze.

Sprint killed the talk and surf feature

..not on the note 3, but on all spark enabled phones (Galaxy S5, Note 4, etc). I upgraded to the S5 to find out that while on mobile data you can only talk or surf, not both!
I'm putting this in the Note 3 because I took back the S5 and got the Note 3 (the best phone) that does both.
Hopefully others that need this feature might choose the Note 3 as well and we can get some more user activity in this thread.
Thanks and as I've been using rooted phones for 4 years now (EVO and S3) I look forward to interacting with everyone..

I think once they implement VoLTE then we'll have talk and surf on Spark capable phones. I could be wrong.

Lets hope I'm out all day and really need to be able to do both.
I was just disappointed that they would engineer their new phones to do less than their previous ones.
Other carriers new phones still do both.

They did not intentionally engineer the phones to disable this. Samsung builds the phones, not Sprint. Sprint's towers are currently incapable of this feature on any Tri-band phone utilizing Spark. It requires a future planned upgrade to Sprint towers to enable this feature again. AND that would also depend on IF the phone is VoLTE capable. The older EVDO ability is no longer possible with the new Tri-Band phones and Spark.

Exactly. I am trying to find out if my M8 is VoLTE capable on the Sprint model but best I can find is HTC saying it should be with firmware update when available. Not a Yes or no. But a definite no on LTE-A. By the time it rolls out in my area it will probably be time for a new phone anyway.

I think the Note 3 has dual antennae & all Spark enable phones has single. But regardless you can use Hangouts dialer to surf and talk at the same time, Voip..... its how I get around the issue..

OP2 Band 12 and T-Mobile

So I guess this is good news and bad news for T-Mobile users. The OnePlus 2 supports band 12. Awesome, right? Not quite. They did not get the T-Mobile VoLTE certification, so now those of us with T-Mobile face an issue. If you are in an area where band 12 is the strongest signal, you will likely not be able to receive/send calls or text because there is no VoLTE.
With that said - is there any way to "disable" a network band yourself in the software?

The device will switch to H or H+ for voice calls even if LTE is the strongest. Its not really a setback, just an oddity.

No - it won't. According to multiple posters on the OnePlus forum, because the phone senses band 12 connectivity, it will not try and fall back. That's why T-Mobile asked the companies who did not meet their band 12 certification to disable the band - at least temporarily.
"This issue that came up with Moto E/G, was that phones with Band 12 support, but not VoLTE certification for that band. It made the phone look like it had service, but wasn't able to re-route the band to receive the call. Therefore, no calls/emergency calls were able to be made. For this reason, T-Mobile started requiring the VoLTE certification or the removal of the Band 12 support. "

Unfortunately since mine shipped (should be here today, actually) I can't do that. I do already have a buyer lined up for it and my Moto X Pure should be here today as well. I REALLY wanted the OP2 though so I'm disappointed.
Is there still no news on whether the OPT will get T-Mobile VoLTE with a software update, apart from the vague "yeah maybes" that were thrown around by Oneplus a few months ago?

Motorola is at least coming out with a VoLTE setting and bringing band 12 back. They've confirmed that multiple times on the forums. OnePlus hasn't addressed it at all since a Reddit AMA with a vague answer. The issue wouldn't be so bad if it was disabled - but since it's not disabled, there will be issues with T-Mobile.

Are you sure about this? I have been reading up on this issue (including your discussion on the OnePlus forum) and most indications are that the device will fall back unless there is no available connection other than band 12. As written here:
"A Motorola employee explained recently that band 12 was removed from the Moto E (2015) at T-Mobile’s request over concerns that it could show that it has an LTE signal, but if all that it has is band 12, it couldn’t actually complete a call since it has no VoLTE support. While T-Mobile hasn’t officially commented on this matter, T-Mo spoke with Android Police off the record and said that any device on its network with band 12 also needs to support VoLTE and E911. Without VoLTE, band 12 phones on T-Mo are unable to make a call if they don’t have any other T-Mo service to fall back to, and they won’t know to roam onto another carrier’s network. Removing band 12 altogether eliminates this issue."
Not trying to argue with you or prove you wrong just trying to get some clarity on this issue while I still have time to cancel my order if need be.
It would be nice if someone with a OP2 on T-Mobile in an area with band 12 could comment.
---------- Post added at 12:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:53 AM ----------
Also, this:
Due to lack of VoLTE support you won't be able to place and receive calls including 911 calls in some buildings and some outdoor areas where 2G GSM and 3G HSPA+ (marketed by T-Mobile as "4G") signal is too weak or non-existent while LTE band 12 is available. You will still have data connection and you can receive and place non-emergency calls via Google Hangouts app (using Google Voice number). To place an emergency call you will have to either move outdoors where 2G or 3G signal is available or disable LTE to make your phone roam on another GSM network.

I can confirm that the Oneplus Two on T-mobile when on Band 12 LTE will drop to H or H+ when a call comes in if you have reception on those. I'm guessing it will also drop to Edge/GSM if a call comes in and that's the only reception you have for voice. I just did it at work right now where I'm getting Band 12 LTE. I called my cell from my work phone and the status bar dropped to H. I'm in the Los Angeles Metro area.

my Signal is great in California.
No problem here in Orlando, Florida.
So...this post from a similar thread in the OnePlus forums made a lot more sense to me than anything else I've read about this.
NaterTots says:
Some are getting confused in this thread.
Band 12 VoLTE support is important IF you have only Band 12 LTE coverage. Then you won't get any calls or texts since Band 12 penetrates buildings and rural areas better than the other Tmo bands.
If you're in an area that your connected to Band 12 BUT there are other bands around then your phone will switch automatically. No worries, you'll get calls and texts.
So if the OP2 doesn't support Band 12 VoLTE and you're not near any other Tmo bands then you'll not be able to make emergency calls or recieve texts.

TLDR: if there is another band available, you're fine, if not, you won't get texts or calls until there is.

OnePlus 2 VoLTE for Jio 4G India

Jio 4G has been testing VoLTE in India and its full fledged. Its been more than an year actually. Sadly OnePlus 2 has not yet got VoLTE support inspite of lots of people asking for it. Most phones support it. Samsung supports VoLTE out of box. For example Galaxy A8 works flawlessly by just inserting the Jio sim. No settings needed. OnePlus is not bothered since they dont have VoLTE in China and its not a priority for them.
Jio supports VoLTE and Wifi calling.
With OnePlus 2 i feel pretty useless as I am able to use only data with 4G.
When somebody advertises the phone as 4G on what bases do they do it? I know its a relatively new technology but its just a matter of a small OTA update. And there has been lots of requests and complaints regarding it.
Jio has an application called Jio Join where in you can use VoLTE functions. So with that application calling and sms works. But you dont get the HD voice quality that native VoLTE offers and the application is kind of heavy.
It'll be good if you can put this up on the Oneplus.net forum. The company needs to see it.
Seen a few complaints about this, even on twitter and facebook. Considering Reliance is still pretty much operating in stealth launch mode, with full commercial rollout still 4-6 weeks away, my guess is OPO will release it in time for that. This reminds me of how HTC m8 was crippled without 4g support, till Airtel rolled out its initial networks.

The launch is much further than that from my guess. But networks are well laid out. I get strong signal everywhere. I feel it has better signal than most current operators and seeing that it is beta stage it is great. They want to make it perfect before they launch since they are going to rely on just 4G and they won't be rolling back to 3G or 2G when there is no signal. Well 2G will be long gone in a few years time.
Phones like Galaxy S6, Iphone and others like Moto G 3rd gen, Galaxy A8 all have VoLTE support. I am able to make calls in 4G through that. Awesome clarity I must say when its 4G to 4G. VoLTE is the future.
Airtel has kind of given a bad name to 4G by rolling out in bits. Well I hope OnePlus listens to this. It's just a matter of an OTA which will include an option to enable Voice Over LTE. They have the option WIFI Calling which doesn't work. Wifi calling is also being implemented in Jio.
And OnePlus Two supports many bands. In India we also have 800 Mhz band which is being used by Jio. It's a shame that they don't have a full fledge 4G phone just because of their crippled software.

Yup its working flawless with iPhone 6s+, they had a full fledged testing to get it Apple certified as well.
But don't confuse it with "Reliance" this is a different company. Reliance Communications is a company in loss with sad networks and cheap rates!
Jio is a different company. They also have apps like Jiochat, and other beta apps like Jio Play.

It says soon. Oneplus 3 already supports it out of box, so it's not a big deal to imagine that OP2 will get it soon enough.
It should be out before the official launch of Jio. I have heard the Jio and OnePlus are working together for VoLTE fix. Maybe they would also come up with three month unlimited data and voice option too.
current OOS 3.0.2 support VoLTE ?
Same question, is this already VoLTE supported? And if not then what do i miss out?
I'm so irritated that OP2 doesn't support voLTE. Darn the flagship killer tag they put. ( REGRETS )
Does the OP3 support VoLTE? has oneplus even confirmed that the OP2 can handle VoLTE

The phones hardware supports VoLTE it's just the software that limits the phone's capabilities
They're saying they will push an update with VoLTE support
I use jio with oneplus2 as well. The only way I can call is by using JioJoin app, as you said, but is it just me or even you cannot use the calling function if WiFi is switched on? In my case I can call or can get calls only if I have switched on data from jio and switched off the WiFi in my phone.
Is that how it is supposed to work for now, before official VoLTE support?
Thanks.

That's the only way it works right now. Calls and SMS over Jio works only on data. Even with data off or on Wifi, you wont receive or be able to make calls or send SMS. It's not an ideal solution, but its the only workaround till OnePlus rolls out VoLTE (if ever).
VoLTE is basically carrier provisioning, it doesn't require any special HW, and OnePlus 2 is capable on the HW front. But even then, I really doubt OnePlus will actually roll out an update for that.

It should be out before the official launch of Jio. I have heard the Jio and OnePlus are working together for VoLTE fix. Maybe they would also come up with three month unlimited data and voice option too.

Do any of the other ROMs for the OP2 offer VoLTE?
OnePlus are the biggest fraudsters. I have got 3 oneplus 2 phones bought in december last year and Im a reliance employee working in the same office as the Jio people and trust me OnePlus is rolling out an update since ages. I have tried contacting OnePlus at ever level email forums even mailed the owners and India General Manager but no 1 not a single person cared to reply of even acknowledge it. Just a matter of a simple OTA and we are done but the just want us to but their flagship phone the OnePlus 3. I will explain why.
VOLTE enabling need the Mobile network operator to "certify" the device from the company. OnePlus 3 supports VOLTE which means it was certified by Jio officials and only then VOLTE was enabled. Now if OnePlus could certify 1 phone why not certify the Oneplus 2 as well at the same time and roll out an official OTA in a month afterall its not a big deal to include such a small feature in 1 month. But they dont want to.
Their motto should be "Just buy our new phone" and not "Never Settle"

Cellular strength and throughput

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the Honor 8 Pro's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.
honor needs to do more with local telcos to enable features like 4g+ and VoLTE. Where I live now, I can't enjoy these yet though my telco does offer it to other phones like Mate9 and even P9.
Lte signal is good and even performance is excellent but volte calls dialled from this phone to other volte number doesn't work.

4g, LTE Network is good on sim 1 but the reception on sim 2 fluctuates too much even in the centre of the city where you expect maximum network connectivity.
Speeds on 4g are terrible, literally. Youtube struggles to stream video at 360 on 4g with good connectivity. If the connectivity is low, stop even thinking to load a webpage.
Other thing is if you switch the default mobile data to 2nd sim, it will switch 4g to 2nd sim making your sim 1 obscure if it is a 4g only network.
Also there is no way you can lock your network to 4g/3g/2g only. It floats between the 3 techs.
And last the Jio VoLTE calling issue where you the call disconnects immediately.
The phone doesn't support ViLTE.

But sadly not working on Honor products
Not working On my H8
sadly, how telco implements things like VoLTE, 4G+ (CA), etc... it's not as simple as just meeting band requirements.
as such, in Malaysia, one cannot get VoLTE and CA on any of the local telcos. hopefully, honor/ Huawei can work with the local telcos. after all, phones like P10, Mate 9 all have VoLTE working with the local telcos.
but that aside, speed is decent. i guess this depends on the telcos... whether their network is saturated or not, etc...

Yup, not as easy as we users think.
BTW it also supports carrier aggregation but this has to be supported both by device and the network.
Fortunately, in India. It's supported by both.

you're lucky... honor India seems to be very strong and active, unlike honor Malaysia where they just launch the phone and then just leave it as it is after that. rather than work with telco to enable ALL the capabilities of the phone (like VoLTE and CA), they are just focusing on marketing it as a gaming device -- partnered to sponsor Mobile Legends Championship in Malaysia.
they actually mentioned on a FB post that honor 8 Pro does not support VoLTE. quoting them:
Honor 8 Pro does not support VoLTE. However, we will take your concern as suggestion and highlight this matter to our relevant team for their attention.

In response to your query we would like to inform you that Jio sim only works with 4G network it will not work with 2G/3G network and at a time 4G network will work in one sim then another sim network will convert into 2G network.
Further, we are forwarding your precious feedback to the concerned department and we will try to work on it in our future update.

And now exactly this is the thing that I am trying to explain them but this is what they are replying!
That the second network converts to 2g but then you cannot just stop mobile data of sim 1 and switch on mobile data of sim 2 because that will change the 4g network to sim 2.
Quite dumb!

lg v30+ bad cell reception

so ive had the v30 for a week and a half now and i noticed the reception on it is horrible especially when im at work i only get 2 bars, some spots 1 bar then other spots it drops to 3g at 1 bar.. is there a way to get better reception? ive already messed with the network settings its the same. i didnt have this problem when i had the iphone 7 or samsung s8. both of those phones always stayed on 4g at work. so is there a possible fix to improve this?

It has to temporarily switch to HSPA for phone calls if your carrier is not letting you use VoLTE.
It will switch back to LTE after the phone call.

Do you have the VoLTE toggle enabled in Settings?
I don't, because my carrier plan doesn't allow VoLTE -- but I have no problem temporarily dropping to HSPA for a phone call.
