I'm sure he knows that, except he doesn't want to go through the hassle of rooting his phone and uninstalling everything.
You're right, I figured that out myself though. But I was wondering if it happens that someone makes a custom ROM that only includes the things the phone needs and nothing more like the apps that come with the phone.
so if you root it can you get rid of the whole touchwiz interface?
cause I think he wants to get rid of touchwiz UI, and so do I.

What I want is gingerbread and only the apps installed that the phone needs to function.
I figured out that by rooting the phone I can individually uninstall the apps that I don't use, but a custom rom with this things already done would be handy. Especially for those who don't know much about rooting etc yet.
But don't you need to root to install the custom rom anyway?

Well, I just got my phone yesterday and before I start adding a apps that I like. Would it be better to root now? I know the phone just came out, so are the rooting methods we have good quality roots? because I don't want to mess up my phone since I already had it for 2 days. . I know im just over thinking but just would like some feedback from xda. Also is there anyway getting rid of all the bloatware this phone has? or do I have to wait for a custom rom?

Hey whats up? You might want to play with your new GS3 for a bit to see what you like and dislike about the phone. That way, when you are ready to flash a custom ROM, you know what style of ROM that you like. For instance, the Galaxy S3 uses the TouchWiz interface. Some ROM's are based on TouchWiz and some are striped down like AOKP or CyanogenMod. Hopefully you know what I'm talking about, otherwise you shouldn't think about rooting or flashing ROM's until you do some research. Make sure you know what rooting is before you jump in. To answer your question, you can remove bloatware after you root your phone with Titanium Backup. (purchase the pro version) You do not need a custom ROM to remove bloatware. By having root access, you open up your phone to a whole new world! After you gain root access, your next step is flashing custom ROM's. My advice, do a lot of reading here on XDA and learn. Also, YouTube has some great videos on rooting and flashing ROM;s. (check out galaxyS3root.com) Make sure that anything you flash/mod, specifically says it is for your phone. Make/Model/Carrier etc. If you have any questions about this stuff, PM me. I like to help.

wow thanks for such an awesome reply. I actually just rooted my phone 2mins ago and installed CWR. Right now, im not interested getting a new rom until like you said did my research. However, I didnt know Titanium Backup can get rid of all the bloatware. THANKS!!!

Also be sure if you should manually remove any bloat you do not remove anything you are not sure 100% about. there are many components that are bloat but linked directly to Touchwiz....if parts are removed upon reboot or a factory rest your phone may not be able to fully boot and you will be busting out ODIN.
After rooting and having CWM installed, first thing you should do is do a nandroid backup. If you ever screw up removing stuff from your phone, you can just restore it. I have a backup of my phone rooted before removing bloat and another after I have all the bloat removed.

Yup finally rooted myself after having the phone for nearly two weeks. I'm patiently waiting until Blazer ROM 1.3 is available for download so I don't need to worry about what bloatware is ok/not ok to remove. :victory:

I am completetly new in this with rooting and everything but I thought I would take a shot at it. Now, practically my only need is for the standard camera app to remain, the samsung regular one. What types of ROMs have that built in? I know that the CM10 does not have it, or is there a way to sideload it?
Only Samsung ROMs have the stock Samsung camera app, it'll never work on anything else. If you like the look of pure Google though your best bet is chamelion rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847600) however its only android v 4.0.4 (edit its beta 4.1.2). Its stock Samsung but has aokp features
Hmm, I was rather hoping that the CM10 would work. Then I have a second question. Can I root the standard rom I have and add tweaks, mods, remove useless apps etc?

Yes. Flash Siyah kernel, and search (or try for yourself) for extra settings in Stweaks you can use. To remove apps you can use Titanium Back up.

Hmm. Well that seems quite good. In what steps do I root and apply the kernel and what is this CWM that everyone is talking about. And everyone suggest that you back up everything with Titanium. Can I do that even without being rooted?

I actually don't think there is any app that workes like TB. If there is (which I doubt), I wouldn't know as I always use TB.
But why would you want such a 'serious' back up if you're not going to flash new roms?

As I said I'm completely new on this and I've read a few threads and articles about it. I don't know what things will wipe my phone and what won't. I'm still deciding between getting CM10 or SlimBean and use another camera app from Android Market or if I just root the phone...
I will need to compare ProCapture and the Stock Camera app firstly and then decide I think.

Especially then it's important you search and read a bit more, so you understand what you are doing.
Why not root your phone and flash a Samsung based rom? In that case you have your stock camera, and you can add a lot of tweaks, mods etc. to your phone.

You can Install Adfree, Go Backup or Titanium backup and make a full backup of your data, First go to Recovery (CWM) make a full system backup.
After that you may wish to try some Custom roms, CrDroid or Wanamlite or Foxhound they are very good ROMS.
If you do not know what for are you rooting your phone - do not do it.
Most likely, your base benefit will be:-
- loss of stability due to overclocking;
- loss of functionality due to app freezing in TB;
- worse case scenario: phone brick.

You root for a reason and not if you have no reason .
You would be far better off reading the basics in the stickies before trying to do what you know nothing about and risking a bricked phone .

You can install apps like adaway or such as stated above. I just want to tell you one thing. Naturally you will be curious to use custom ROMs like Ultima (it's really cool) or such. But before trying each different ROM have a Full Wipe.

Thank you all for your replies. My main reason to root to try different apps that require rooting. I don't think anyone when started rooting his/her device knows everything and what to do without referring to some help from forums of reading somewhere.

Sorry, but... actually I was acting contrary to that. I rooted my SGS two years ago first time to freeze/uninstall bloatware and to ban some apps from net usage, or to limit its net usage to WiFi only (by the use of Titanium Backup and DroidWall, respectively).
Unfortunately, DroidWall needs the root all time while running, otherwise, I'd unroot device as soon as I finished cleaning.

I first rooted my LG GT540 so that I could flash a CM7 port, best choice I ever made.
Now I use it for Titanium, root explorers, adfree, getRIL , fasterGPS, multi window control and to obsessively flash roms mainly.
So I've had the phone for less than a week. I've performed the ioroot procedure and installed twrp. Other than that, the phone is stock right now - 10B. I've performed a backup.
My phone is offering to install 11C. I'd like to update to that version, but at a glance it seems like there may be issues if I ever need to downgrade, or.. I may lose root.
So, for our specific phone, the VS985 model, what is the best way to upgrade to the latest stock ROM and keep root / the ability to downgrade?
Sorry for the noob question, but I'm new to the phone and am seeing some conflicting information, probably due to variances between different versions of the phone. I just want to do this right the first time and avoid having to ask more dumb questions
Look for the thread by bweN diorD in either General or Q&A that starts with [REF] and has img or images in the title.
Use the links in that thread to flash the 12b modem and system images, using autoprime's flash2Modem and flash2System zips (bweN links to that thread).
Your choice on whether you also want to flash the 12b boot image. I did flash the 11c boot, didn't bother with 12b.
After flashing the new images, anything you've tweaked in /system has to be re-nudged -- freezing verizon bloat, freezing "System updates..." (or renaming the /system/app LGDMSClient files), reinstalling the hotspot mod (if you need it). It's a pretty painless evolution.
(Definitely freeze System updates.... Once you've got twrp, if you try to install an OTA directly you'll get stuck in a boot-to-recovery problem. Autoprime has a flashable zip that wipes out the files causing the boot-to-recovery, I keep a copy of that zip loaded on my phone's user volume, but it's simpler to just not try to install an OTA.)

My understanding is that it is safer to avoid flashing the boot image because changes to the bootloader could affect root or the ability to roll back. Is there a reason you bothered flashing 11C?

There is no downside to flashing it at this point, but I haven't seen proof there is any benefit either. I'm still on 10b running L ROMs no problem, so I don't see any point in updating anything but the modem.

You can root 10B and tell supersu to maintain root and take all the OTAs and still keep root. I did that so that I'd have VoLTE and I could take an OTA in the future without issue if it was shown root would survive. Your choice I guess, but we know root survives all the way to 12B so why not go the stock route to ensure you are fully updated? Just my thoughts anyway.

Yeah we all could be as well. The issue is your camera is jacked and you lose things like multi window, ir remote, and quick memo writing.
I tried 5.0.x for a few days but the negatives weren't worth it to me. I am fully updated at 12B as I can still use the G3 with the stock goodies that were added by LG and not cripple the device by putting AOSP on it. Don't get me wrong, I prefer the look of AOSP, but one of the major reasons I got this phone was for the camera and without the 5.0.x roms including LG camera app with them, it's a no go for me. Google camera app just doesn't do it and laser focus is gone so pics are crap in my opinion.
Instead I use g3 tweaks and Nova to make my phone look more like AOSP. I'll wait for the devs to get ahold of 5.0.x for the g3 so we can still keep the g3 goodies before I update any further.
So, I'd say 12B is as fully updated as there is at this point. Just my opinion though.

the camera doesnt stand up to stock, no doubt, but thats the only thing i wish could be better. the rest of that stuff i dont use.
it all depends on what you want/use/need.
i prefer custom roms the majority of the time.

You're right for sure. It's all personal preference. I figure if the only thing that looks different from stock is the settings menu and not having the quick settings tiles, I'm close enough that I'm not bothered by all the LG colors and added stuff.
I'm waiting for the camera app to get ported then I'm all in on a custom 5.0.x rom. That may be a while, but I can wait.

For anyone reading this, I just wanted to let them know that there is a ported version of Quick Remote that works under AOSP / CM including Lollipop. I think it's in the non-variant G3 sections.
