Should i move to Sony xperia xz?? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

I have been a user of LG G5 since 6 months now and I love it.....but lately I am quite bored of it and want to try something new...so shall I move to the Sony Xperia XZ, any advice will be much appreciated....

I don't think that's a right step to do cuz your basically downgrading from the excellent G5 to to the good XZ, by doing that u will compromise mostly on the display and camera department...

I feel like that with every phone - you get bored over time.
Still, this is an awesome phone and camera and performance are, in my opinion , better then xz.. Other than getting bored any other reason ?

Yeah agree with pretty much with what they said. Your version of g5 got root? If so mess with that to keeep things fresh. The g6 coming out soon as well.

I have used both the G5 & XZ
Honestly the Xperia XZ feel more premium than G5, with better screen & build quality.
also the battery life in XZ is much better & I prefer the close to stock Android Sony UI.
All in all Xperia XZ is for my point of view is a better choice, but you may miss the G5 camera, I believe G5 camera is the best.

I agree on everything you said, especially about the build - it does feel more premium [xz].
The battery is swapable on G5 (mine lasts fpr about 3-5 hours SoT , with and without playing Vainglory game..)

Idk why everybody complains about the G5's battery, after nougat update, mine got a huge improvement in the battery department, literally I charge it once in a few days and I'm a power user so don't worry, i play a lot of intensive games and watch YouTube most of the time, regarding the display comparison between the G5 and the XZ, the latter has a far worse one in my opinion cuz it's only 1080p (and no it's not enough after i got used to QUAD HD), and let's not forget the 3 gigs of Ram versus 4 Gigs in the G5

please try to look to G5 screen under direct room light for example, you will even see the reflection & shadow of your finger on the LG G5 screen, it does feel bad after all, and that doesn't happen with XZ.
also under direct sun Xperia XZ screen is better than G5.
so on paper LG G5 screen is two times better than the Xperia XZ.
But in reality and according to my own experience Xperia XZ screen is better than LG G5 & HTC 10 also in spite of that both LG G5 & HTC 10 does have QHD screen while Sony Xperia XZ have only FHD screen (1920 x 1080) .
Sony screens are the best

Don't u think ur a bit exaggerating, most of my use falls under direct sunlight, and thanks to outdoor mode its so brigh and clear

Apart from the camera, the G5 is a bit underwhelming on all fronts. I do appreciate the removable battery but I'm regretting my purchase. I would not get either phone but wait for the G6 as it's not long till release.

Question to you all. In your opinion whats the best supported brand phone 'ROM' wise? Thinking onePlus3 or I wrong?

one thing more under direct sun try to look to the screen while wearing polarized sun glasses and you will believe what I'm talking about.

Ultra or Z1? cant make my mind

Now that the Ultra LTE is finally available at the Sony Stores, there is only one question - should i get this or the Z1?
I cant decide. I really like this phone but the camera is sub par with no flash. The Z1 has a decent shooter, but the design is not so thin and the screen had some negative reviews. ohh and its 1.4" smaller
what do you guys say?
X1? Haha or you mean Z1

lol yes, i meant z1
It really depends..overall Z1 is a better phone than the Z ultra. (unless the screen is as bad as some reviewers are saying..the screen on the z ultra is amazing)
If you like big screens than obviously Z ultra
If you take a lot of photos than obviously Z1
That's pretty much the difference between the two.
I had this same dilemma and chose Z ultra simply because I wanted a big (the biggest) screen and although the camera is not that great, it's okay because i don't take photos anyway.

i guess thats the issue. although i dont take a lot of photos, but when i do, my cellphone is my main (and only) camera. lol
so i expect decent pictures. Ultra really fails at that, especially in low light

In decent lighting i think the z ultra is okay for the occasional shot. It's not THAT bad but yeah in low light it really suffers.
Same here, my phone is my only camera, but since I watch much more videos, play more games and browse the web far more often than i take photos, choosing the z utlra was a no brainer..
So I guess it depends on what you need most.
If only the z ultra had a good camera, it would be a perfect phone!

If the ultra had a good camera it would be as thick as a ****ty One Max and lose much of it's appeal.
I got both the Z1 and Z Ultra. If I had to chose I'd pick the ultra. It's just the best phone to work with in the whole world. Size is an issue but you can always manage somehow.

Yeah I agree one max is too thick. Stupid actually from HTC
Actually the Z ultra still fits in my jeans pocket so for me size is not so bad!

Z1 is the better all round phone in my opinion. Z Ultra has the better and bigger screen, but sacrifices the camera and is less portable due to the size.
All smartphone cameras are terrible anyways when compared to a DSLR.
For me its all about the screen. Its large enough so that it can replace your tablet and forms your primary reading/media consumption device as well as phone.
Z1 is just another phone with an overrated camera.
Both cameras will be fine for social media/happy snaps.
YMMV.
Yep I agree, if camera is ok enough for social media sites, I'm a-ok with that! Hence, I decided to get the XZU. I'd rather have a unique looking phablet (in terms of size) that I can browse, read, text, call and take pics with.
I was in the same boat last week. I went with ZU because the extra screen estate was on top of my list. You need to sort out your priorities as well. For me, ZU replaced a 5 inch phone and a 7 inch tablet all together. So it was a no-brainer. I also considered z1 for its camera. Like someone else said, ZU camera is not bad at all and I never used flash to take low light pictures (it freaks people out and these cheap $1 flash on smartphones basically ruin lowlight pictures). To sum it up
For big screen, sleek profile, excellent display, tablet usage, decent camera - go for ZU. Get the Sony CP12 3000 mAh power cover and double up on battery life.
For compact size, excellent camera - go for z1.
Performance of both are pretty much the same.
So an update for the OP I looked at the Z1 in store and reviewer's were right. The Z1's screen is washed out when compared to the Z ultra's and the viewing angles are comparable to the original Z
Sent from my C6802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
yeah i noticed the same.
I called all the sony stores in Toronto and NONE of them had the unlocked ZU in stock. Apparently they don't have stock :S
I may just order online from the sony store. Its weird how they have NO cases on the sony store website for the phone either.
all the cameras on cell phones to me are the same with the exception of the nokia lumia and HTC one because the yhave optical image stabilization. A sony store employee told me last week when choosing the Z1 or ZU that they don't have OIS because they sell the QX100 and QX 10.
Funny, probally everybody went trough this process. I also hesitated when I heard of the camera.
But this screen is awesome, its like having a new high end lcd tv. But the in your hand.
The device is very thin, it gives it a very sophisticated look. Because its so thin i've the feeling it makes the phone look smaller then it actually is. And as mentioned before in daylight pictures are ok. Pictures outside are just the same as any other phone. Actually a photo outside and subject closeby it makes very decent photos.
When people see me with the phone, they first make a joke or something. When i turn the screen on, they're openly asking themselves if they also should buy and then where they should put it
Let me tell u something in terms of picture quality. It os beaten by even the ipad and ipad mini. Video recording. Quality is pretty good. But this is the worst.shooter.
Sent from my C6833 using xda app-developers app
Not a pro when taking photos. I take photos too but not too often, sometimes at daytime and seldom in the night. actually it's terrible at night. however, as i mentioned, I'm not a pro but for normal use, under normal, ISO and other adjustments would be better than auto. Just give a shot bro.
And for z1, i think camera is the only advantage.
Zu, fails for camera, but wins for all.
Cuz i like bigger screen and thinner body more than a camera which i could buy a real camera in the future.

Xperia Z1s v LG G2

Thinking about picking up a Z1s
Do any LG G2 owners have any experiences/thoughts about how the two phones compare? I've never held the phone nor do I know much about it.
Reasons I'm thinking about switching:
-camera
-waterproof/dustproof
-microSD
Reasons I want to keep the G2:
-Z1s has a locked bootloader, no root
-love the G2
dammit, just read the forum rules, i don't know how to delete a thread. which subforum do i use to ask for opinions?
Camera on Z1 seems too bad http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2522321 compared with G2, waterproof is gimmick mostly. So I for G2

I have the compact Z1
Still trying to get to grips with it, Frankly I think I preferred the G2 also had the Nexus 5 and that isn't even in the same ball park as the G2. Battery is shocking.
Stick with the G2, If I get mine to work again I am going back to it.
I used the z1s for a day and returned it. Horrible screen. Huge bezel. Hurt my hand to hold it. The G2 has a larger better screen in a smaller footprint.
I own a Z1 but im about to sell it because it way too sharp and hurts my hand :/
-Zyner
Z1 has huge bezels and horrible screen. Stick with G2.
Wait for the z2
I recently switched from Z1 to G2. Mainly because the Z1 camera wasnt as amazing as Sony made out it was and the fact the screen was smaller.
The Z1 has much better build quality. The camera is a little better, but not as noticeable as it should be.
The speakers are superior on the G2, they actually sound really really good when compared with Z1.
I dont really use a SD card and 16gb is enough for me. Never was clumsy enough and never have been to put my phones in water.
For what i use G2 for , the G2 is perfect.
I will say the Z1 video recording is fantastic though

Stick with the G2... I spent the last month studying both handsets and the G2 owned the Z1 in many aspects. The most important one: Community support. You'll have a smartphone that will last a lot more than others. Cause even if LG drops the support, the custom community will be there for you.
Well the screen will be worlds better on the G2. To my knowledge the Z1 family of phones uses a TN display not an IPS display. The viewing angles are pretty bad on the Z1s. Also more of a personal opinion. I hate the Xperia ui. It just looks boxy to me. Like an industrial design gone horribly wrong. Most reviewers love it, but I never liked it. Not that I'm in love with lg's ui but it offers so many customizations that you can really do what you want with it.

The G2 Screen is awesome! The Z1 is too big / bulky to fit in jeans pocket. Even the G2 is at the upper limit in terms of size. Or I need to buy new jeans with bigger pockets
holding a Z1 upward for videos or whatever while on the bed is suicide if u sleep. If it falls on u it's hello mortuary!

LG G3 Launch made you want to toss your G2 out?

When I finished watching the launch I was amazed - nothing less. LG is really good at the marketing.
I looked at my 6 month old G2 and just wanted to throw my trusty companion away for that new beauty - then it struck me that the difference is mostly on the software and not on the hardware.
What the G3 has to offer that your G2 doesn't have.
- A 5.5 inch QHD screen which is apparantly really good. I won't comment on whether it's better or not since there is nobody who actually has compared them - yet. This is ofcourse subject to change and it might turn out that a QHD is indeed needed and good for a smartphone.
- Laser Autofocus - There's no way our G2 will focus on an object in less than 300 miliseconds. That's a fact. This thing is really cool!
- The design is awesome - like really awesome albeit a bit too big for my small hands. I would most likely use a cover on it anyway because I care a lot about my phone.
What the G3 has that your G2 can have in the future with a G3 ROM:
All those cool and smart changes to the software like
- Flat UI that looks great and Smart notifications
- The new LG Keyboard which has an increased accuracy and helps you correct typos easier
- Increased security features
- Focus and shoot with just one touch
Please note that the battery in the G3 is a 3000 mAh battery, just like the one in our G2 (although the G3 battery is removable). Yes it has been optimised and so on but the Snapdragon 801 is pushing 1.8x as many pixels as a full HD screen and that naturally means an increased power consumption. The G3 is said to have 3 GB RAM and a microSD slot.
Things the G2 has that the G3 won't have :
A more compact form factor - 5.5 inches will still be 5.5 inches no matter how sleek the body is.
Great developers like @dorimanx @Cloudyfa @xdabbeb (to name a few) and many many many many others who do a great job supporting our G2.
And finally:
Reasons not to toss out your G2 just yet:
The Snapdragon 801 is only a minor improvement over the Snapdragon 800 but it has a much bigger load to carry (the screen).
Same battery capacity but a 1080p screen instead of a 1440p one.
More compact
Developer support
It has been your trusty companion for so many months
The camera on the G3 is still only a 13MP shooter.
Nobody has actually tried the G3 to see how good it is.

yes laser cam made g2 to heads down
I'm extremely happy with the G2 still. 5.5" is too big. The 5.2" pushes my comfort zone already for one hand use. It teeters on the balls of my fingertips already. The higher res screen is a mute point. the G2 already has an extremely high DPI. Outside of a numbers game, the extra DPI is wasted. It is just a waste of system resources on such small screens.
I didn't watch the launch but the laser cam sounds cool but I can live without. The screen and software are the only thing that is really different.
If the laser cam can detect distance, it would be cool if there was a app that would spit out the distance from objects. I seen a guy measure my basement with that and it was awesome.
If only it had SD805, also the era of 64 bit processor is upon us, so very soon 801 and 805 would be out, i would rather wait out G4 and install a custom G3 rom as soon it is available.
I came to this phone via a dead s3, and a replacement HTC One x. I absolutely love this thing. I even love the button placement in the back. Can't see myself upgrading anytime soon.

There were a few things I was hoping for in the G3 :
- Replaceable Battery
- SD Slot
- Better Camera
- Waterproof like 1 meter or so
- Slim bezels (which is something G2 gave me and I will never give up.)
- Battery Life (which is something G2 gave me and I will never give up.)
They gave me 5 out of 6 of these, while the 4th is the most important to me. If the 4th was also a reality, i'd be filling up my pre-order now.
But without it, I don't see any reason to jump now. I'll wait for prices to go down, and wait for Software to update after all bugs have been ironed out, and I'll wait to see if other phones maybe compete (I doubt that though)...
I agree with you guys, purchasing another 32-bit model with the new 64-bits coming out soon is generally a bad idea. In fact, I was debating whether I really wanted my G2 or not since 64-bit processors were coming out soonish. Also another thing I would like is some sort of active cooling to counter thermal throttling during heavy loads.
I haven't even rooted my G2, let alone install a custom rom and I know I can transform my G2 to a G3 without the camera and screen in the matter of hours
LG says they "listen to their customers". Apparantly they don't listen well enough. I'm pretty sure the only reason why they made a 5.5 inch panel was because they had a hard time fitting all those pixels in a smaller screen.
I'm waiting for 64-bit processors and hopefully some sort of cooling to counter thermal throttling.
Give me that sexy UI and I'm happy with my G2
I haven't seen the launch stream, but had read some of the coverage by press.
1. I love the new design, both on the software and hardware side. They have really raised the bar with that.
2. We still will have to wait for the reviews about laser focus. It can be either a gimmick or true breakthrough for smartphone photography. Think how it could easily improve focus in low light situation where infrared rays would easily acquire object.
3. Waiting for the port of G3 roms. I'm really looking forward for new stuff like Content Lock (oh boy, how many times I was THIS CLOSE to revealing my gf's "for my eyes only" pics)
Hope our awesome devs will make it happen in no time!)
Also graphite anode is amazing new feature in batt technology. Especially as I've studied electrochemistry and I'm sure it will make great results for battery life. GO LG LABS
I love my G2 but ever since I have had it I can't seem to get the camera to work correctly unless I am outside and it is completely sunny. The camera in the dark is absolutely useless for me even with the flash on it takes 6-7 seconds to snap. Do I have some settings incorrect? I love everything else about the phone especially the button placement.

It seems like they actually were looking into some of the criticism that the G2 received, and made their best efforts to try and make things even better. The design looks less generic, the interface (which I just hope they backport to the G2) looks way better than before, and I was shocked they even bothered to make the battery removable (given that, much like physical keyboards, the removable battery is an endangered species).
Given I own a G2, some of the specs on the G3 seem like overkill; they need to focus less on the specifications arms race and more on genuine innovation.
The camera is the same identical Sony imx135, only differs in laser to focus. At Max you will need a bit of more time to focus, but the output is the same if you know how to shot a photo

LG G2 vs. G3 vs iPhone 6+ vs. M8 vs. S5 vs. Note4

Took my G2 with Optimus G3 ROM to Best Buy to compare how my 1 year old G2 works against the new phones.
Needless to say the G2 didn't surprise me at all.
Speed:
It was just as fast and fluid compared to each and every phone I listed. In fact with the G3 ROM my phone opened menus quicker than the G3 itself with no lag!!
Screen
G2 is brighter than each phone listed with the exception of the M8. Quality and clarity was better than:
Note 4
S5
On par with:
IPhone 6 plus
M8
Not better than G3 only bc the icons/ text are sharper on that phone due to the resolution respectively.
However, the G2 screen was much brighter, more colorful and having a slightly better viewing angle vs the G3 on display.
I was disappointed the G3 screen was yellowish compared to the bright clear color on my G2.
I was expecting it to blow my phone out the water. Not so.
In fact this G3 was the 2nd display unit I saw which suffered from the yellow tint of death. Really hope LG gets that in order as I hope the majority of units on the market don't fall in this category.
Take your G2 to Best Buy and compare for yourself!
The Note 4 test will be the one you find surprising. Was also hoping that screen would blow this one away...not so much.
On your phone and on the display unit, go to
www.att.yahoo.com.
Set brightness to 100% text size to 100% as well. Grab an employee as a witness and have fun showing them how your year old G2 makes the new screen look bad.
Oh yeah the G2 brightness is higher vs the Note 4.
It only won on viewing angle category.
People buy phones because they are new and they can. G2 is good. Others as well good.

Indeed!
But the issue it's not whether people can buy what they want or the others are good or bad.
The G2 is that good it can still compete with the new technology and win

I completly agree that it is the best phone to have. I am some how pleased moving from s2 to g2. The only thing which sometime bothers is the ram management, phone starts to lag if you keep or accidently leave chrome open. This lag can be well experienced when tying. If lg can release some update for only ram management then this phone will rock for few more year like galaxy s2 did

I have to agree as now G2(D802) with cloudyG3 is my main phone and G3 (D855) as my secondary phone. G3 screen drains too much to be my main, but its still a great phone so i keep it anyway.
At the min this phone is number 1 on my list. So glad to know it still competes with the best.
Snapdgaron 800 + 2Gb RAM. Why do you need to pay more? Just for 4K display?
Would love to see how LG G4 turns out, hoping it wont be over 5.5". Personally, if I had to replace my G2 today I would likely go for a Nexus 5. Very neat phone with lots of dev potential for a long time to come. Its battery may be the main downside though

That's because there are two displays that the G2 uses.
I have an iPhone 6 plus as my work phone and I can say that it is [email protected] Only thing I like better than my G2 is bigger screen. Bigger screen that has burned in, seriously wtf.. Already asked boss and he ordered Note 4 for me. Will see how that one holds up against my G2. My next phone will probably be Nexus 6 if I decide to leave my precious G2. I am interested to see how will LG G4 look, but if it will have locked bootloader then it will be a no go for me. Anyway G2 is still a great phone and I don't see any phone released this year to be much better.
Go for a G3 or Note 4.
I have the G2. Its great, but there's some downsides:
No replace able battery
Poor camera and focus at low light
I already some LG mid phones, like LG LII, L4 and recent F3. But never had a top one like G2. Really like it, great features that indeed makes difference and to me a phone its better if has tecnologies that makes difference. Im really satisfied with it but in my opinion Moto X and now Moto Maxx are the best because of that A.I. that in all moments makes special.
G2 is the cheapest on the list, you can find them under $280 easily...

On an Xperia Z3, but I still love the G2 especially with CloudyG3 you can hide the navbar in apps. Except for being fragile, its a great, beautiful phone and I miss the back placed buttons. Its probably the most cost effective phone of the major manufacturers.
I was sceptical about the back buttons but now it would be hard to have a device without them. My phone is running CM11 M11 and I love it. I don't see the need to switch devices until later in 2015 when 64 bit is available (and yes I know that 64 bit doesn't mean much) as the G2 competes with the current crop of phones in a way that the S4 and M7 can't.

TO XA ULTRA or NOT TO?

If you excuse my stupid word play ..we can go ahead with the actual question...
I have a Z ULTRA. Totally love it.however, over a period, have started to hate the camera quality and the size is tad too uncomfortable.
So if i were to convince my dad and get a XA ULTRA, would it be too much to ask?
So would the XA ULTRA be a worthy upgrade? Or am I just moving horizontally ahead?
Also, the ROM scene doesn't look very good on the XA Ultra..will it pick up over time? Can we root it at least ?
Thanks a lot!

Well I'm rooted and running xposed. I also had a z ultra about two years ago. This phone runs fine to me no lag. Had it about 3 weeks now

Even the normal xa is a great device my advice go and try the xa ultra if possible you'll soon make your mind up. Yes it's quiet it's a new device don't expect as many custom roms as the z ultra had but then from previous experience I think modified stock is much better anyway Just make sure you get a xa ultra with a unlockable Bootloader if you want to root it which I'm guessing you do there is also no way to back up ta keys currently either on any of the x range its why I'm holding off rooting for a while certainly shouldn't believe everything bad you hear about the xperia x range I think it's some of there best yet despite what people say.

THANks both you guys...My other alternative was the Lenovo Vibe Z2 PRO. I don't know but even though it was an old device, the specs still rock. What do you guys think? I have my Lumia 1520 as my second device. An XA Ultra will really complement the 1520?
I am getting a really good deal on my Z Ultra. And it is working absolutely fine. I am not a heavy user. Just a few apps like WhatsApp, Twitter, Snapchat etc. And a few games sometimes. I wanted to know if the XAU will be a total mess? I saw some comparison videos and looks about just as fast as the Z5 Premium.
So should I take the plunge?
You won't gain any performance as they perform the same if you benchmark. That's kind of bad that the XA Ultra does not perform better than the Z Ultra which is very old. The device does lag a little from time to time and smaller hickups can occur. In general it's pretty smooth but stutters here and there. That being said, they also failed on the battery life department on this phone. It's bad for a 6" phone.
Good points are screen and camera. They do not disappoint. Because of them I really like the phone. The camera in the Z Ultra is easily the worst I have ever had. That will be a huge upgrade.
You might want to consider the Xiaomi Mi Max if you want to stay with 6,44" but get a little smaller device anyway compared to the Z Ultra. It has a Snapdragon 650 and it outperforms the Mediatek in the XA Ultra. The Mi Max is a lot faster and smoother in everyday operation and battery life is totally amazing and crushes the XA Ultra battery life.

I am actually done with anything above 6". I was looking for a decent 6" and after seeing this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDLtbJIOcaw
I am convinced XA is totally bang for the buck.
I am just waiting for developers to show some interest and get a couple of good ROMs.
Thanks!
Yeah it's a good phone. After all I'm using it and am happy

Happy here too ?

I've gone from the Z Ultra to the XA Ultra, but not by choice - my beloved Z Ultra died.
I didn't find it an upgrade, I didn't even find it a horizontal move, I think the XA Ultra can't hold a candle to the good ol' Z Ultra. But it is a little bit smaller (albeit much thicker) and the camera is indeed incomparably better. So you may be happy with it.

Your trying to compare a ex flagship(specs wise at least) with a midrange device. I went from midrange xperia to midrange xperia and consider the xa a big leap all round compared to older midrange devices.

Guilty as charged, the Z Ultra spoiled me royally. But it was not just the specs, it was the execution that made the Z Ultra like no other phone.

It's a nice phone bit way too big for its screen size. Too big for phone usage. Great hardware though but oh my god that horrendous camera.

Don't agree about the camera, the xa ultra has a larger camera than the xa so should be better. I've seen some good pictures taken with the xa+xa ultra on g+ and reddit, it's a massive improvement over previous midrange xperia devices in every way.

Yeah I meant the camera in the Z Ultra. I find the camera in my XA Ultra to perform very well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but XA Ultra isn't waterproof, right? That's is a spec that I look in a phone, and in a Sony should be standard at least at this level mid range...

It's the latest firmware update that caused this. On previous firmware the minimum screen brightness was very very low. Quite the opposite now. It's so bright on lowest setting that I'm thinking of selling the phone as I can't use it without being blinded this time of the year here in Sweden where it's dark most of the day at winter.

NO!!! Don't get yourself xa ultra, I always love Xperia and I convince my wife to get one and her phone after just a couple of months is completely rubbish, it lags a lot and battery life goes like from 100% to ZERO in about half an hour! I try the software repair a few times and all that stuff that Sony recommends on their support page and phone still a paperweight ( an expensive one). It works great for about 20 minutes then again the sluggish and the fast battery drain.
