Phone Speaker is crackly and tingy - Moto Z Questions & Answers

Anyone else find that the speaker on the Moto Z to be awful at loud volumes? Mine is tingy, muffled and just distorted at high volumes. Even when talking on the phone.

Mine is okay. It certainly isn't great at load volumes, but I guess that's to be expected by a combined ear piece/mono speaker. It isn't worse than my OPO for sure. The sound isn't distorted on high volumes tho, it just sounds a bit worse than on lower volumes

Mine also has the cracking sound a few months after I purchased my phone.
What I did was to CLEAN the speaker with a cloth (something that can get inside the mouth, a bit damp).
My speaker was covered with DUST and this caused the cracking sound.
After thoroughly cleaning it, my phone sounds better now (the crackling noise was ALMOST gone).

Possibly blown speaker?

So I've been having issues with the earpiece on my Hero from day 1 and I'm concerned the speaker may be blown. Any sound coming from the earpiece above 75% volume seems to be accompanied with a nasty vibrating sound (which I know for sure is from the speaker and not a call quality issue). Does anyone else experience this? I need to know if the hero's earpiece speaker simply cannot sound at high volume or if my speaker is blown. I dont wanna have to exchange the phone and pay for another ghost armor kit and install!

Strikingly loud speaker volume

Ever since I booted up the DNA, the speaker sounded outrageously loud distinguishably.
I pulled out my old Samsung Fascinate and tested its decibel level at full volume...and guess what; the full volume from the Fascinate is close to what the DNA produces at the lowest volume level!!!
At full volume from the DNA, it clearly eats up the sound from my laptop at its full volume.
Nonetheless the sound quality even at full is just superb with no distortion nor uneven dynamics of each frequencies (From standards of a phone of course), but it is just too damn loud even at the lowest level.
Yeah I like how loud and clear it is, but I also find it annoying that this thing is still quite loud at the literal lowest volume setting haha. Oh well...

Mine isn't very loud .. is it broke?

Yeah, it really cramps my style watching videos in my work bathroom. I have to lug my N7 around now because of it!
Using speakerphone is a bit quiet for my taste.

You could test your DNA's decibel levels and have HTC determine if your device is functioning as it should be. But I doubt that yours is a faulty one, as HTC would test all products during the manufacturing stage.
GSM arena tested it

GSM arena tested it and it did very well it is supposed to be 83.1 decibels so I suppose if yours is less than that then your speaker is faulty. I feel like mine is not that loud of a speaker so I may have the same problem as you.:crying:
True.
I would agree, it seems rather loud, especially for some of the ringtones. It also depends on the ambience of the room obviously. In a quiet house where no noise is made for several hours, a simple tone on low volume seems too loud. Though when I go outside, sometimes the speaker is not loud enough. I can't ever find that happy medium.
Ha! OK, I thought I was the only one to think this phone was loud. In fact, I even seem to remember seeing another post on here about the phone being too quiet. Whaaaa?!? I find myself attempting to turn down the earpiece volume even though it's already on the lowest setting. Sometimes I think people sitting next to me are listening in... I can use the earpiece as a speakerphone in a quiet setting. Any devs out there planning on creating a custom ROM would do themselves good to add a wider sound range for the earpiece speaker.
Mine is noticeably loud but not like, exceptionally so. I usually keep it like 2 notches below full and the ringtones are kind of "normal volume".
This is interesting. I have found my DNA to be too quiet even with volume at 100%. I can barely hear (let alone understand) the navigation voice when driving in my car. Though I do find the earpiece to be ridiculously loud. Other people around me can easily hear the caller speaking when I'm on the phone. I'll have to see if I can find a way to test it.
Put me in the "too loud on speakerphone" category. The sound is clear, but it is WAY too loud at the lowest volume setting on speakerphone. It's a real problem for me, as I ALWAYS use the speakerphone, but I don't want everyone within 50 feet to hear my conversation. It's crazy-loud.
Is there any way to tweak this? Some dbproperties, or whatever? Also, has anyone been able to root this phone? I can't find any instructions that actually work. Thanks
ClarkSt,
Adjusting output level from software or kernel isn't yet possible on this device, but you can reduce the speaker volume manually; simply cover the speaker bar with your finger or some rubber or wood material to the length which you want it to be.

Yeah, it's pretty loud for me too, but only on the second setting level, the first level is perfect on mine, I compared it to a Galaxy S2 and Nexus.

One speaker louder than the other

Hey guys, today I noticed that on my Z2 the sound coming from the left speaker is noticeably clearer and louder. The right one sounds as if water hadn't completely dried out, despite the tablet not being exposed to any. Interestingly the difference isn't as huge if I flip the device 180°, then it sounds rather fine.
Could this be a software issue or should I warranty this?
I fear there's nobody being able to answer this. It's something you need to hear yourself.
It MIGHT be a software issue as it wouldn't be the only one connected with audio output: Try changing the orientation of the Z2 while listening to an audio source - sound gets muted for a fracture of a second. Shouldn't happen.
I just checked the audio output of my Z2: Both quietspeakers (they just don't deserve being called LOUDspeakers) sound the same. So it's more likely to be a hardware issue at your side; sorry.
The left speaker seems to be a tad quieter than the right.

Fix the low sound in loudspeaker

As it says fixing the low sound in the loud speaker. Lets start anyway i begin to clean my almost two year old ultra and see that the speaker grill was stucked with dirt so try remove it with a needle and a small little cloth thingy released must be the water protection for the speaker but anyway. i happy with as it is the sound is much higher than before when playing music from the loudspeaker.
was just a tip my phone is quite old anyway and warranty is almost out so it doesnt matter to me but try if you want and get much louder sound

Could be a defect - though I haven't got a 1+1 to compare to...
Its just as loud as my htc one m8 though.
Its plenty loud in my opinion. Was slightly disappointed when i realised it was only one speaker on the bottom
Probably a defect. Get a return or refund. The earpiece and speaker both get LOUD.

You can't really compare the two, the OPO has stereo output. The OPX has only the left speaker. Unless you are referring to the ear speaker, then they about the same.
It's not really clear enough to hear especially when I'm outside

It was a Hardware issue or do you solve these issue with Software? Like reset vor fullwipe? I have the same Problem... I can hear my phone-partner but it is verry verry noisy...
Either you really have a hardware defect or a serious problem with your hearing
I nearly get a heart attack every morning when my alarm goes off... and yes, it is THAT loud! -.- I had to reduce the volume of my alarm .mp3 via software to be bearable.
Mine is ok. Slightly above average. Maybe its individual preference
I don't mean the two speakers on the bottom side. I mean the speaker which we use for calling on the top side. Alarm and Musik works great, because it cames Form the two speakers.
It's possible to make stereo sound with earpiece like nexus 5?

OPO is dual-speakers, not stereo output. Although, my OPX still has a louder loudspeaker as my OPO. This is very noticeable in playing games and music.
