Suggestions for an unobtrusive T9 dialer? - Wileyfox Swift 2 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I've received the OTA update to 7.1.1 (kudos to Wileyfox for delivering!).
However, I'm not too keen on the Truecaller dialer they bundled...
Any suggestions on an unobtrusive T9 dialer? I'd be happy to have Google Phone back (the Marshmallow dialer) but it seems to be unavaible from Google Play...
Thanks

I got pointed to this one here: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...gle-phone-8-0-148481159-android-apk-download/ and will give it a try.

Try ExDialer from Modoohut from the playstore. Supports a number of themes and so on.

Google dialer 8 from apk mirror can't be installed on the device.
This version is ok: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...-7-0-140861421-nonnexus-android-apk-download/
This looks also promising, but I haven't try it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-google-dialer-t3557412

Thanks, i see that I linked to the wrong version. I installed the non-nexus version you linked to and it's fine.

Everybody keeps banging on about true caller like it's new for nougat but I've always had it as default dialer on marshmallow......

That's not the same... There was a Truecaller mod on the standard C.os dialer. You could disable it and never see it again . That was not the case in this update.
The stink is being raised because the two questionable pack-ins - Zen and Truecaller - can't be simply disabled. Otherwise most users who didn't want the stuff would just disable it and move on.

That's... weird I can't remember how I did it because it literally took seconds... But hey, even here a fix is just a download away. I'm quite happy with the Nougat ROM, just with a different dialer and launcher (in fact I had already replaced Trebuchet by Nova before)

I can't believe this feature is missing?!

The dialer app cannot do T9 contacts search? I cannot believe it! Can somebody tell me I have missed the setting somewhere to turn it on?

T9 ? I believe that feature was abandoned years ago in most phones... there's no T9 on Z2
1995 called, they want their technology back.
Yeah lets cry about every little thing now..
Abandoned years ago? lol, not even close. Actually T9 with predictive lookup is still the fastest way (least clicks) to get to a number that isn't on speed dial if you know what you're doing. Fast and easy doesn't go out of style and obviously most people and the OEMs agree since I haven't had a phone that doesn't do T9 yet and I get a new flagship phone every time one comes along that I like better than the one I already have. I'm curious what phones don't have it because I'm not running into any without it. With that said there are dialers available on the market with a wide range of features that are IMO better than any I've come across OEM mostly due to increased options so I'd look there for the weapon of my choice.
Wait a minute..
I believe T9 is there on my Z2. For instance, I type 326435 to search "daniel" and it works.
Is that what you're looking for?
I can confirm that T9 works with the dialer.
That is strange. Cause it doesn't work on mine
Works on my z2 too. Maybe clear data for your contacts app?

Hi,
I just got my Z2 from Starhub. I am trying to dial my contacts by matching against names, but it can only match against numbers only too.
Did you manage to find a solution around this?
Thank you!

In the end, I use a 3rd party dialer downloaded from Google play. The stock dialer sucks, unfortunately.

Just because a feature doesn't work for you, means that it sucks. Tried the Daniel thing that was earlier posted and it works fine. Try it in safe mode?

The fact of the matter is that the "daniel" thing didn't work for me, and accordingly to one other person in Singapore too. Maybe the Z2 sold in Singapore is different? The fact is that if I type "326435" it shows no contacts found in the stock dialer but in the 3rd party dialer it shows up Daniel. I have tried alot of things including deleting the dialer data, deleting and recreating all my contacts etc. But none works. This is a very basic feature of a dialer as I do not believe anybody will whip out a dialer and search for his contacts using the contact number. Hence by not being able to perform such a basic feature, it sucks! Sorry for being blunt.
To add on, I have taken a few screenshots to demonstrate what the phone is showing, vs what the 3rd party dialer is showing (DialApp). If somebody can post screenshots to show that their Z2 stock dialer can really show "Daniel" when they type "326435", I would be really surprised that this feature works differently.
1. First screenshot shows the stock dialer highlighting only the numbers which match 326 as I type.
2. 2nd screenshot shows that no contacts were found after typing 326435
3. 3rd screenshot shows that Daniel was highlighted when I typed 326435 using the 3rd party dialer
Working perfectly...i can find my contacts name dialing their corresponding letters,,,not a single problem
Try force stopping/disabling then reenabling it?

My Z2 is D6503 and it Daniel comes out fine. Daniel seems like such a common name.
I noticed from your 2nd screen shot, there's a space after 4 digits and then followed with the other 2 ie 3264 35 Could that be the reason.
When I type 6 numbers, they are grouped as one and not split into 2 like in your picture.
Does other more than 4 numbers also get split?

Google Dialer

Has anyone installed and tried Google Dialer on this phone yet? If so which apk did you use? Any problems?
What google dialer are you talking about? It already has the stock dialer from aosp on the phone.

Is there anything special needed? Root? Disabling the stock dialer?
No, I have it installed but I have 2 phone apps in app drawer, you can't disable the phone app that comes with the phone.
Just tried it. Moto assist does not work using the Google dialer. So when I'm home, the phone no longer let's me answer the phone with voice activation. I use that more than I'd use the Google dialer features, thanks for posting the apk though.

Any time I do the location search at the top of the dialer in the APK I get a force close of the dialer. For instance I can type "Home Depot", as soon as I press on the result to select it I get a FC.

I'm pretty sure you need more than just the dialer apk to get that functionality.
I was looking for a way to have that functionality as well, and after a little research I found out that the location search on the dialer is an exclusive feature for Nexus and Google Play devices :crying: . I had that on my Galaxy S4 GPE and I liked that feature too. Found a post on Android Police explaining on how to make it work on other devices, but a lot of bugs can happen.

I've updated to Android 5.0 out of the box when I got my phone few days ago. - This morning I've installed the 1.1 Dialer APK linked in this thread, however, something did not work, when I pull up the app info on the only icon in the drawer it tells me version 5.0-10.
However, if I go into Settings > Apps > (Downloaded Tab) I see Dialer 1.1 is installed, under (All) I still see Dialer, and version lists 5.0-10 - The 5.0-10 is the stock moto one for Android 5.0, and this one does not have the caller ID, reverse look-up.
I might try disabling the 5.0-10, but from what I understand, that messes with the phone in a big way?

I'm not sure what can happen if you disable the stock dialer app, maybe prevent you from making/receiving phone calls if you don't have another dialer app installed? That's just my guess though, never actually did it to check. Were you able to make the location feature work?

I was unable to get the Caller ID to work, the phone shows me that they are both installed ( Settings > Apps ) - however, the one that came with the stock/factory ROM is preventing the 1.1 version for loading/showing at all in the apps list, so short of disabling the stock one (which I understand is not something one should be doing), I can't even open/access the offloaded one (Dialer 1.1)
I might get brave and disable the stock dialer, see if the Dialer 1.1 surfaces in the apps list.

I think that no major issues should arise as long as you just freeze the app and not uninstall it with titanium backup, but again, that's just my wild guess haha. Anyway, leave us posted about your findings.

OK - Got it Working!!! - Not Really, it crashes.
Step #1 - Download/Install the APK from this post
(will need a file manager to browse the phone to where the APK was downloaded to)
Step #2 - Create shortcut for Google Dialer 1.1 that you just installed using QuickShortcutMaker
Detailed instructions are HERE - Start at Step #3 on that page.
(Stock Dialer should be the only one showing in app drawer, you need to make a shortcut for the Google Dialer 1.1)
Step #3 - Win!!!
Some Pictures as Proof in Puddin
Stock Moto X Lollipop 5.0 Dialer / Settings
Nexus Android 5.x Dialer (Dialer 1.1) / Settings / Results
Google Dialer 1.1 shortcut above Stock Dialer shortcut.
Since trying this app initially, I've rooted my phone, and I've tried to follow steps outlined in (http://htc-one.wonderhowto.com/how-to/install-new-kitkat-4-4-3-dialer-your-htc-one-0155515/), specifically Step 2 - Where the app is installed in /system/priv-app/ folders - I am sad to report this does not work still on MotoX
As previous users suggested, there are probably those other services the Dialer depends on that need to be installed.
I'll update if I find a solution.
I don't know if it matters but I had a Nexus 6 before getting my Moto X. The Google Dialer was version 2.0. I didn't grab the APK before returning it but I'm sure it could be pulled from the factory image.
I was unable to make this work, root/non-root.
Got it working, here -http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/themes-apps/mod-google-dialer-messenger-pure-edition-t2982408

6.0.1 Emoji Pack

In case anyone wants the new Emojis Google added in 6.0.1, here is a TWRP zip install package to add them.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/cdlxxi912q140xo/6.0.1Emojis.zip
Verify they are working here
http://emojipedia.org/unicode-8.0/ (try it before and after)
NOTE : You may need to clear the cache and data of Google Keyboard before the new emojis will be visible and/or accessible
I had to clear cache and data, but they are definitely there now, just remember to go back and reset your input settings, i.e. auto correction settings, block offensive words, etc...

Is there an update for this. Cool work btw

The Complete Pixel Experience

For this you must have root, Xposed, and TWRP.
The attached flash able zip includes:
-Pixel Launcher
-Pixel Dialer
-Static wallpapers
-Boot animation
-Ringtones
-Notifications
-UI sounds
For some reason xda is not allowing me to post the zip so here is the download link: https://www.mediafire.com/?jzfi51r10c35rdb
Simply download the zip, reboot to TWRP, flash, reboot
I take no credit whatsoever for this zip. This is the zip that was taken from the article here: https://www.google.com/amp/phandroid.com/2016/10/21/pixel-features-apps-any-android-phone/amp/
To get Google Assistant:
1) Download and install the latest Google apk from APK mirror. It should be at least version 6.6.14.21 and have a target of Android 7.0.
2) Download Xposed Module "Assistant Enabler". Activate and reboot.
3) Once rebooted, clear data and cache of Google App. Google Assistant should now pop up when you long press the home button.
Note: "OK Google" does not work.

Cool. I flashed the file. Dialer is in fact there but it is still using stock ZTE In call UI. Anyway to use Google Dialer for in call ui? I am about to try to get Google Assistant working.
Thanks.
Did you set the Pixel dialer as the default dialer app in Settings? If that doesn't work you can delete the stock dialer app with a system app remover like I did

Might be worth a try-
In order to make OK Google work on my Nexus 6, I had to set my phone language to English (UK), also set search language, google assistant language, voice language... basically everything language related to English(UK).
The reason is a bug related to English(US) language file. All these information along with a detailed guide can be found in Nexus 6P section.
It might also require a app data wipe for the Google application.
My Axon 7 hasn't arrived yet, so I am unable to test myself.

I may be wrong, but I remember reading that "OK Google", in Google Assistant, only works with Nougat (Android 7.0+) phones.
You could anyways use Nova Launcher instead to get "ok Google" to work. With latest beta you can almost make it exactly like the pixel launder

So when you get or receive a call is the stock android dialer interface ? Or the Zte interface with a small picture on the upper right-side ? Thanks.
I'm using Google Dialer v ...rc8 without root but the calling interface is still the Zte one.

Has anyone been able to get the stock Android Dialer installed?

Google Play store says it's not compatible; I've tried various APKs and when I go to install they also say incompatible.
That sucks. What might be the cause? I know the S8 can install it.

As per the notes on the thread, this older version is the only one that fully works on Non-Nexus devices. The newer patched versions may install but are often buggy and lack the necessary framework for spam call rejection and other features.

Does your dialer have the voicemail tab? I'm on T-Mobile and have to use T-Mobile's Visual Voicemail app on my unlocked phone. I couldn't get the voicemail tab to show up and there was nothing in the settings that could activate it. I tried a SIM card pulling trick I saw on Reddit but that didn't do it either. Thanks!

I couldn't get the voicemail tab to show up and there was nothing in the settings that could activate it. I tried a SIM card pulling trick I saw on Reddit but that didn't do it either. Thanks!

I can check when I get home tonight. I’m using my iPhone right now. I’ll let you know later.
Edit...I'm home now and looking at my V30 with the Google dialer, and I don't see a voicemail tab anywhere.
How did you enable call screen or dialing screen to stock one? On my v30 only the dialer screen showsup and the calling screen is LG one.

You have to ensure that the Google Phone app is actually properly set as your default Dialer/Phone app. I had a similar problem until I did that. Under settings, go to apps and then click on "Configure apps" under the three dot overflow menu on the top right. Make sure the correct app is listed under "Phone app".

Thank you thank you THANK YOU! :good:
Been searching for days to find an apk that works on my LG V20, and this works perfectly - even location search.
