Moto Z Droid displaying 5 icons per row? Is this possible? - Moto Z Questions & Answers

Moving from a Nexus 6 to the Moto Z Droid which is running Nougat. The display shows only 4 icons/row which seems a waste of real estate versus the 5 that Nexus 6 has. I also checked out a Nexus 5X which has a similar resolution and that has 5 icons also.
Is there a way to get 5 icons/row with the GN launcher and/or without root? I did play around with DPI and font size but that didn't allow me add more icons/row.
Thanks

You'll need to use a different launcher. GN doesn't support what you're looking for.

I use Nova. Does everything! :good:

That is disappointing. I even tried the Pixel launcher and no joy. I like the GN launcher and I guess I will just have to put up with the icon limitation

You can do it with custom roms. I'm not sure if it's possible with stock but can give it a try.
Go-to settings > display > display size > small

What do you like so much about GN? In my opinion it is pretty limited in customisation.
Have you tried Nova Launcher? I bet Nova can do all that GN does and much much more... and it's light on resources as well

Yea same issue, you need to use a custom rom to fix this

I think I will just wait for an upgrade to the Z. I am on 7.0 and with Android O now in beta with some pretty cool features I hope Motorola/Verizon release an upgrade one day or I guess I will be flashing a custom ROM.

You can set the screen incons resolution under developer options.
After enabling developer options go to "drawing" section and change the value of the "Smallest width". I have setted it to 470dp and I get 5 icons per row in the menu.
I hope this would help you.

Thanks but that didn't work. I can get five icons in the app drawer but only 4 in the main screens. Tons of space between the icons though.

launcher pro screen resolution?

launcher pro seems to be the fastest home replacement for gingerbread but the icons and launcher are far to small on the rezound. anybody have any tips to increase the icon size or is this because the dev has not updated the app for almost a year? ive tried several launchers and it seems to be the fastest.

It's because the dev hasn't updated it, you could try changing your screen density

how do i do that? got any recommendations for size?
It's really too bad that app has basically been abandoned.
LPP Plus was always my favorite launcher when I was using my DroidX.
It seemed that he gave up on it when he couldn't get the unread gmail count to work right after gmail updated their app.
Now, with the Rezound I find that the stock Sense launcher is just as fast or faster than any of the other launchers (& I LOVE the Sense widgets) so I don't bother installing the other launchers anymore (I also have ADWLauncher EX)
It was a great launcher, seems he took the money and ran though instead of delivering that promised re-write of the code....
go launcher is more supreme now at least for gingerbread. maybe slap it on aosp once it's stable
Launcherpro was the smoothest launcher on my og droid and I loved the customization of it, but nowadays go launcher and nova launcher are taking over
i adjusted the resolution in the build prop from 320 to 340 and it helped a bit.

i tried 360 and some of the UI was messed up. 340 seems to be ok though. also increases the browser font size which looks 10x better IMO.

Actually I think it goes beyond that. I like Go Launcher, but that's my only gripe about it. It's like at times when you hit the app drawer button it won't register, you have to hit the drawer like 2-3 times for it to open. I sent feedback in on this a while ago, not sure if anything is being done about it.
I take it back..adw launcher ex is the best. Plus its got an awesome ice cream theme.
It's a shame that LP hasn't been updated. It used to be so good!
I had to set my lcd density back to default as it screwed up the market where i could not install apps. Just a heads up guys.

FWIW, that's never happened to me. Have you tried changing different settings in Preferences? There are several that might impact your situation. ....just a thought.

Any way to change dpi without rooting?

My guess is no, but here's hoping. I am coming from an original Note, which I have had rooted for a while and run a ton of different roms on. I honestly really didn't want to root this note 3, but I am finding the dpi to be a bit unbearable. I liked to run 240dpi on my note, with nova launcher this allowed me to go 7 icons wide and 8 or 9 tall without much of a problem. I have no need for that many icons on my home screen, but it allowed for more widgets, or maybe just a few icons and still being able to see the majority of my background picture.
I already put nova launcher on my note 3, so I am able to get the same icon grid size, but it just looks so tight and the icons are huge.
This is also a problem for texting. On the note(using stock android messaging app)I could easily see the last 3-5 messages even with the keyboard open. One the note 3, I can see one or maybe 2 of the last messages with the keyboard open, and as I start to type a new message I'm lucky if I can even see all of the last message sent.
I just don't get why they give you such a big screen then clutter it with huge icons and texts/keyboards and things. Sure its great for movie and web browsing, but that huge screen really doesn't do much for day to day use I don't think because they scaled up everything else at the same time.
One of my friends said on his Note 2 there was a way to change the resolution(he said resolution, not sure if he meant that or dpi) and also a way to change the amount of icons touch wiz allows. I did think there was a way to change the number of icons in touchwiz. Its default is 4, I was pretty sure 5 was possible and even though they had recently bumped it up to 6, but I could not find that option anywhere.
Any help?
I used Nova Launcher to resize the icons on an unrooted Note 2. I don't know if that's still the case on the Note 3 since I don't have one yet.
I can resize widgets with nova, but I don't think you can resize icons.I mean I was able to change the grid size, but they looks so big and clustered together than on my note at 240dpi
What's the point of such a beautiful screen!

I know how you feel. I'm also thinking of getting note 3 (now i'm with N7000) but with all the stuff so huge it really is ugly (i wouldn't want to root either). If you find a solution please let me know!
As far as I can tell you would need to be rooted to change the dpi. They are accessed through the system file build.prop.
If you go into nova launcher settings and long press volume down you can access hidden features to allow more grid space which allows more widgets. You could also change the icon size rake them smaller.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions.

If Stock Nougat has released for Z, then you have got 2 new options under Display settings "Font size" and "Display size". This will do the DPI adjustment without the need to reboot.
If on Marshmallow you would need to manually look into build.prop and edit the "ro.sf.lcd_density" to a smaller value.
Yes, The Google Now launcher icons look way too big and i always used to run onto Nova launcher. But then, Google launcher is lot smoother at use.

Mate 10 - huge icons in stock launcher

Hi all, this is my first post on here (ever) so go easy!
After owning 3x Mate 9's (MHA-L09 & L29) over the course of the last year, I decided to treat myself and have just received my shiny new Mocha Brown Mate 10 (ALP-L29), imported to the UK from Singapore.
I've noticed one or two "teething" issues however, most niggling being the size of the icons/home screen grid and notifications on the pull down menu, they're all huge!
I have view mode and text size set to "small" in display settings though it doesn't help.
I think, could be wrong, that EMUI 5.0 on the Mate 9 had a "smallest" setting?
Anyway, I was able to shrink the icons, widgets etc to a much smaller size.
Can anyone help with this or am I going to have to hope (and pray) for a software update that addresses this?
It's such a big, beautiful display and is a shame filling it with giant icons....
Any suggestions appreciated!
Thanks.
When both view mode is set to small on mate 9 and Mate 10, yes the mate 9 icons are slightly smaller.

I thought so, must be a coming fix for this?
Just feels like the fantastic screen real estate is wasted.
There should really be a 6x6 grid option built in to stock Emui don't you think?
I know Nova can provide it, but really want to stay stock for now with phone being so new!
(I may even be first in UK with it, not sure!)

Especially relating to launcher scale?
I've also noticed another issue where I can't delete Gmail emails from the notification shade.

With the last nova update, no crash anymore dude
I tried to persist with the stock launcher but it got the best of me. It just lacks so many features.
I've used alot of launchers but obviously Nova is a good starting point ( it didn't crash for me) and also evie is another one. My every day launcher is action launcher and it is excellent on the mate 10. Launchers come down to personal preference but in my opinion there are plenty out there that are better than the stock one.
Also pixel 2 launcher apk on this great forums is very good and smooth

Same here. BLA-029 .119(C636). Latest version of Nova launcher. Can anyone confirm if they are NOT having this problem? Thanks all.
Same problem here. Seems like view mode doesn't affect the size of the icons on the home screen and the size of the notification toggles. I've had the phone for 2 hours and its been bugging me ever since. I hope someone can fix this. I really hate my icons looking so big.
For smaller icons in stock launcher you have to find an icon pack with smaller icons size. I did it in app Huawei Themes https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.deishelon.lab.thememanager You can install new theme from this app which is called "card", and then apply icons from this theme in the native Huawei's theme app. For me icons from card theme look nicely and are smaller than original ones. Give it a try.
Currently using Pixel Launcher and icons are smaller now but the notification toggles are still huge.
When choosing one of the launchers mentioned in this thread, can you still use the navigation dock?

icon sizes

After using Nova Launcher forever, I decided to run the 9+ stock for a while and recreated my screens. However, the icons are gigantic. Is there a setting I am missing to change the icon size? It seems there is a limit as to what I can modify on the stock home.

Are you sure there's a setting for smaller icons? You can adjust screen resolution and grid spacing. Neither of those options impact actual icon size. I don't think I've stumbled across a setting for icon sizes aside from maybe assistive super sizing.

Yup. I've yet to find a setting that will change the icon size on the native "TouchWiz" launcher. Maybe they get a little smaller when you have the screen grid at the highest setting (5x6), but this has no impact on the home screen dock, which is where my icons and folder live.

Dont mind the other guy. I know what u r talking about and is fair question to ask for most noob new to touchwiz.
Unlike nova which u can minimize icon size. U cant do this in touchwiz. There are other way but are limited
Changin grid to 5x6 home screen or/and change ur dpi. If u go to developer mode. The highest dpi for touchwiz 456 before it breaks. asuming you have wqhd+ resolution. If u go any higher touchwiz icon just minimize to small. Also the samsung keyboard breaks.
Try using 5x6, dpi to 456 and see if that small enough for u, if not then u would have to use another launcher.
