how to upgrade the webview on my 5.1 phone? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am developing a hybrid app and would like some of the features of the newer version of webview. I check on the phone (Settings/Apps/All -> Android System WebView) and the stock version is version 39. I also note that the 'FORCE STOP' and 'DISABLE' buttons are inactive.
I installed the new version manually from the Google Play Store, and that is version 58.
If I list the packages using adb, I see that the old webview is com.android.webview while the newer one is com.google.android.webview.
So, now I have both versions installed, but I see from WebSettings.getUserAgentString() that my app is still using version 39.
Is there a way I can get my app to use the new webview?
Regards,
Max.
BTW, phone is vkworld f1 and not rooted.

Signature mismatch on Philips Google TV

I've a Philips 55PUS7909 with Android Jelly Bean on board.
There is a pre-installed Google Play Music app (the very very old version with the old icon). Google Play updates it to v5.9.1854R.1904527 and it doesn't let me update it further.
I'd like to install the 6.0.x version because I hope it will enable me to run in leanback mode the app (the UI used by Android TV)...
Installing the updated version (from apkmirror) tells me that there is a signature conflict with the currently installed app, so I was wondering if you guys know how to do update it?

Android Webview in android 7

I recently just got Android 7.1.1 on my phone and noticed that there were different webviews that I could choose from, I had the option of stock Android webview and AOSP and Chrome Canary, so there are multiple webview and it's based in the apps, so does that mean it is possible to make a custom system wide webview for faster performance than google's own? I'd like to see one if it's possible
Also: it would be nice if someone could explain the effects of turning on webview render separately? Thanks

This new Greenify version uses Prescription. Read more here:
https://github.com/greenify/greenify.github.io/blob/master/README.md
From the Play Store listing:
"What's New
NEW: "Prescriptions (beta)", the community-driven precisely targeted blocking rules. (Learn more: https://github.com/greenify/greenify.github.io)
NEW: App shortcuts for Android 7.1.
Improved the support for privileged working mode (ROM-integrated).
Wake-up monitor and cut-off now works on Android 7.x in root mode.
Fixed wake-up monitor in root mode on the first installation.
Fixed root privilege check on some devices."
I have installed subject version Greenify on my system-less rooted 6.0.1 with Xposed. I have not seen any signs of the Prescription enhancement which is supposed to be in this version. I have seen Greenify activity logged in SuperSU 2.79-SR2 log. Everything seems to be working normally as before so far.
Thanks for adding the shortcuts in Android 7

I just installed beta Greenify version 3.1.1 build 1 from the Play Store. Working fine and no clue what changed . The people running Nougat will see the changes.
Thread title has been updated.
So just to clarify, prescriptions don't work past lollipop?
Where did that come from? I think Prescriptions applies to Nougat currently.

There is an issue when want to read the guides how to configure system via USB-DEBUG for some features to work on non-root Marshmallow (e.g. wake-up tracing or doze on the go)
There's no link passed to external applications (browsers).
Please provide the link to these guides here if you can.

It's my first time using Greenify on Nougat.
I installed the latest beta and granted WRITE _SECURE_SETTINGS, and DUMP, but I cannot enable Doze on the Go.
It says it is not compatible with my ROM or device, is it normal?
On Marshmallow, I could eanble Doze on the go with DUMP permission granted..
My device is Sony Xperia Z5C.
I can't read Chinese, but my "Doze on the Go" switch is also grayed out and says "Already enabled in Xposed features". Do you have Xposed installed like I do and what do those Chinese characters say ?

That says "My device or ROM is incompatible" (I guess, because parts of the phrase is cut out).
I don't have Xposed installed, and my device is not rooted. Does Doze on the Go on Nougat need Xposed?
p.s. It is not Chinese, but Korean

If you are using the stable version, you will not be able to enable Doze on the Go. I also had it. I think that the stable version is not fully compatible with Nougat. In the current beta (3.1.2 build1), it works and you can enable the option.

You can enable it in only one place. If you have enabled it in Xposed features, the other option will be greyed out. The Xposed option works better. Unfortunately, Nougat is yet to have Xposed.

I'm using the current beta, too. But I cannot enable Doze on the Go... Did you root your device?
I didn't, and just granted DUMP and WRITE _SECURE_SETTINGS permission through adb...
What I want to know is if Doze on the Go works on non rooted Nougat device...
I don't have N and don't know if DOTG works with N.

How to make an old android version app to run on android9?

Hello,
Basically i have an old app(target version 5) which is not supported anymore and i need ir to work on android9. It is a reading books app (free and native language) it works good inlower versions of android but i cant get ir work well in android9 with miui10. So i need a way to open the app in an older version of android.
Is there a way to run an app in. Newer versions of android?
Ivve already tried googling sollutions (app not in mirror apk website) and messing with the settings

Installing youtube on an old Samsung phone

I have Acer A500 with Android 4.0.3
I'm trying to install apk Youtube 11.01.70
Youtube won't run without Google Pay services
Google Play services is not present
I try to install apk Google Play services 14.3.69. When I try to install it, it tells me there is a problem parsing the package
Any more ideas?
Because you're using an outdated version of Android.
So it's not possible at all? I thought for an old version of Android I just had to find the right old version of the apps (apk) and installed them.

Even if you did that, it'll ask you to update your apps.
And you can't manually just add all the apps you need? (like Google Play Services in my case)
I find it surprising that this old Android cannot go back to the state it was 10 years ago, if I can get the same software (apk)
In general, the problem parsing the package means that your system software is too old to install that apk file.
Can't you upgrade your Acer A500 system software via OTA at first?
On the other hand, does your mobile phone system really have no built-in Google service framework?

Thanks for the idea. I have never done something like that. Where can I find a OTA image for A500? If you have any instructions for installation it would be also appreciated
Thanks for all the answers. To clarify:
I had Google Services Framework 4.0.4-278776
I just installed Google Play Services 8.1.04 (2215451-036) (036) (successfully, as per indications in this post)
I had install Youtube 11.01.70
When I try to run Youtube tells me that there is a newer version and doesn't go further.
This tablet won't run anything past android 4.0.3, at least without some hacks. With hacks this will run with android 5.1, thus allowing the installation of YouTube.
