I was just looking for this same thing. I ran across a website that shows it can be done, don't know how valid this is though.

Bright future
It seems the G6 is poised for a bright future if it just catches on...

Samsung always takes the cake though

I'm wondering if anybody plans on root at all in the future before buying this phone. Don't want it if there's no development on it!

There's nothing. Which is a shame because I would be rocking this thing already

This is the first phone I have gotten that I don't have the need to root
Sent from my VS988 using Tapatalk

I like to have AdAway, Folder Mount, Quick Boot, and Xprivacy, which need root.

The lack of root is the only thing keeping me from getting this with the Best Buy deal

Best buy deal was too good to pass up and I got one for a family member coming from an ancient Galaxy S3. Really hoping we see root.

Glad I'm not the only one. I traded in for the V20 but it has to be shipped first and I'd much rather keep the G6.. Awesome phone.

I really want to get it, but the complete lack of discussion about it tells me it's not happening anytime soon.

Agreed. I feel like nothing will ever get root again on verizon unless you buy an unlocked phone for a ton of money or a last year model on swappa - but I always buy new.

I don't know what changed. It seems like there's a new push to lock down Android, it might have to do with Android Pay. It's really a shame. I don't understand the lack of people looking for exploits. Maybe they just aren't posting about it like they used to.

Google has created nearly as much of a "walled-garden" as Apple have. Clearly the "security" concerns of the extreme few have caused quite a panic and nearly all of the major manufacturers have locked down their bootloaders and exploits are being punished legally in some cases. Crazy considering it is all based around "open source" code.
VZW is by far the worse offender and I am only on their network because the others all suck in my area. Not that it matters anymore since practically none of them have rootable devices. Unfortunately the best bet this year is the headphone jackless HTC U11 for a whopping $650 for the unlocked, bootloader mod-allowed version.

Has any one tried Kingo Root?
https://www.kingoapp.com/bootloader-unlock/how-to-unlock-lg-bootloader-on-android-device.htm

I may look into it later this week. I have a few things to try.

What a shame. This phone is fantastic, the LG V20 just showed up for me to pick up and I find myself reluctant to pick it up. I know it has root, as I roofed it for my boyfriend, after extreme difficulty it worked but all the custom ROMs for it made it where he can't receive texts or calls. Haven't gone looking for the fix yet. I may wait.
Crossing my fingers at the above post. You'd be my saving Grace. (;
---------- Post added at 07:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:12 PM ----------
Oh and for KingORoot, you need to ask for the OEM unlock code through LG but this phone isn't apart of their available devices. Exploit please!

I fixed his V20, now is rooted with custom ROM and calling and text officially work. Is it enough for me to give up my G6 for root? Still reluctant. Yes, that's how good it is.

Autoprime just posted in the main G6 dev area, it sounds like he is doing a bit of poking at the platform.
It doesn't directly help vs988, but any sign of an experienced developer working the G6 is great.

Why There Is No Development?!

This is just sad!!!
LG makes awesome devices, the G2 is one of the best devices available now, great hardware, great screen yet no devs or users buy it. I know its like the chicken and the egg, but still, its wired not a lot of people buy it.
HTC has S-OFF and locked bootloader, Samsung also has now that stup!d KNOX, Sony and Moto makes pretty bad devices, why devs don't develop for LG devices?!?! Why?!?!
Because no one has unlocked the G2 bootloader.
Also, it is not a popular phone.

I'm talking about LG in general. The Optimus G doesn't have a lot of roms.
Their phones are not popular, but they are awesome phones!
This thread was with rhetorical questions, I know this is the situation and all that, I wanted to create a discussion about this subject
Is there anyone actively looking for exploits in our bootloader?
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 4
I do think I heard some people on the G2 IRC (freenode #lg-g2) are attempting, but I am not certain if this is true.
Anyhoo, no progress has been made currently.
Ha... because its been out for just over a week. AND in the first week we already have root.

Go Bucks!!!!
Everyone that's demanding development/boot loader unlock...first its only been a week since the phone was released...what did you expect every dev to go out and buy a g2...next why don't you go try to learn all the complexities that are involved in the process...just cause there's no news been made public doesn't mean things aren't being worked on. The appropriate individuals will say something when the time is right..whenever the exploit/exploits are done is when they're done...don't rush our devs, make stupid posts, and pointless threads as that will just piss some of them off...that being said things are in the works, just be patient.

Speaking of the bootloader, is there a button combo that can be used to access it? Or is there no such option on this phone. This is my first LG device so I'm feeling a bit like a fish out of water.

I suspect that Development will come once ppl realize the Note 3 is gonna be locked down pretty hard (might take as long as the first OTA to kill any exploits like the S4). Just give it time.. VZN ppl will want a Nexus 5 like device and the LG G2 will be the closest thing hardware wise to it. Just don't expect crazy dev like a flagship Samsung device or the Moto X but there should be some in the near future.

+1. If nobody knew any better they would believe it was a Nexus 5 just from looking at screen, and the LG emblem. Oh yeah, the N5 is shipping with the same hardware...hmm um Verizon LG N5 *cough cough G2*. Development will come and when it does just root. CM. And Verizon N5 . Clearly LG is learning from their Google Nexus 4 and thats what we see in the G2, lets see the difference when the N5 comes out i bet they will be virtually identical, aesthetics and hardware wise, obviously not the software.

The closest I know, and I dont think it's bootloader, is Volume up and plugging in USB. It brings up a download/firmware upgrade screen, which is also where you can see the Rooted boot flag displayed.
There mere fact that we have root (AND got rid of carrier ID) is indicative that development is happening.
Be patient folks

Yeah that's all I've found so far too. Well that and I did stumble on our hidden diagnostics screen. (##228378 in dialer). There is a field test mode there. Doubt it'll come into play for anything but never know I guess.
You know why there's no one developing on LG phones? Because people $hitting on LG phones like it's their job. Just look at the new arstechnica review of the G2. They made it sound like it's the worst phone ever made.

The Samsung fanboy is strong in that one. He completely blew things out of proportion, like come on, a font bug?! Then he left out how the camera was, just pointing out he got a bad auto image once. Then you read the S4 review and its like God handed it to him himself

I hate to bust people's bubble but I've been around Android and its development community (XDA) a long time and from my experience I'm going to say once a phone lacks any development at the beginning, it usually stays that way to the bitter end. Development won't magically just pick up.
It's just an unfortunate part of being in a crowded phone market with HTC, Samsung and even Sony. Developers rather develop for the more popular headsets and the LG will be on the outside looking in.
I'm not going to sugar coat this, if you bought this phone for development I suggest you return it while you have a return window, cause development....it's not going to happen.
If you fell in love with the G2 phone I suggest you wait for the Nexus version of it and then you're going to have a real development community.

John Snow, I didnt know you had a computer in the North? There are several developers who are trying/finding the best way to unlock the bootloader, what exactly did you expect the developers to do within a week without an unlocked bootloader? Yes, some developers go for only the big devices, and guess what, this is one. You seem to know nothing about anything around here, so dont go spreading lies.

Converted my wife to a G2

For all the "it's too big" and "it's too slippery" and other gripes she gave me when I got my G2 back in February..........her Galaxy Nexus has become entirely too unreliable. I finally convinced her to check out phones for an upgrade and to just lose the unlimited data. So we went and looked today, and not wanting to pay much, there were three options. Droid Ultra, Moto X, and G2. After playing, and some more touting of the G2 by me, she bit. So we've got a white and black one in the house now. Can't beat that, got both for free.
Now to get her to bite off on letting me root it.
I would recommend rooting if she doesn't know what she does and what she can do... bricking a device is really easy, so be carefull with that. I'm not saying that she will mess up the whole device but it's fairly easy to break something ( I did mistakes with my G2 but now everything is working fine and I'm a "noob")
I hope she enjoys her G2 as we do !

She doesn't tend to tinker with things. I would prefer to root and debloat it, titanium backup and adaway, and G2Xposed so she can get some buttons back to how here GNex was set up. Just better functionality and no bloat. She won't tinker with settings or anything so I know that's safe.

You gotta change the title heading man!
From experience I would also suggest you get a case, its the best phone for the price but the screen is very fragile when it comes to edge impacts, the Spigen Slim Armor is probably the best in value and for protection.

I got a question: how is bricking a device really easy?
In all my years of Android modding I have seen very few instances of a truly "bricked" device. Can you mess it up and bootloop and stuff? Yes but that is not "bricked".
The phone doesn't need root - not for general use. Stock has everything and it's beautiful.
If you root her phone for your own pleasure, it will come back and haunt you.
Root only if she becomes specifically interested in something that requires root.
Root requires maintenance and she'll have to learn to do it on her own, otherwise your just messing with her freedom and introducing control issues where they may do damage!

The one thing I have run into is the miss use of the term "bricked" although it may have changed over the years. The term "bricked" used to refer to a state in which a device doesn't turn on and does not respond to fastboot or adb commands. If a devices powers on or will respond to fastboot/adb commands then it is not truly bricked. Its just messed up.
Just my 2 cents.

to me, and many users is a brick is when its in un usable state.
Hard brick is almost always non recoverable. Not many seen on g2 as of yet.
soft brick is usually fixed by factory reset/reflash/wiping cache/dalvik. Like when you need to reset partitions when doing ota and on custom recovery.
whatever my 2 cents

I know I didn't used the term correctly, I was reffering to soft-brick. Let's imagine that someone who doesn't know anything about root, custom recoveries and all that stuff that makes android ... well, android, wants to debloat his phone and just delete everything he/she doesn't use and get a bootloop. What is the first reaction ? "omg my phone doesn't turn on!! What am I supposed to do now ?!"
This person would think it's dead and there's nothing that can repair the phone...
I wanted to convert all my friends to root, to experience the real magic of android but then realized that if they don't know what they are doing, it would be more of a nightmare than a "dream", to really customize the phone to their needs.
Sure, I could root, install a custom recovery, and do the magic for them (thanks to all devs on xda) but if they have a problem, they rely on me for solving the issue and I don't really want that pressure, because I don't know what they did to their phones and I just can't manage this...
Sorry for the off-topic.

lol the term brick is not really important. You know what is meant with soft or hardbrick as I explained.
In the end it depends what your wife wants.
There are many adventages to root. like being able to use an add blocker. Or increase the sound by messing with mixer files.
loss of warrantee/security is a risk that can be excepted.
Root is also needed for custom recovery and backup of efs. Its also needed for custom roms naturally. These custom roms have their own advantages, over the loss of stock apps. The gain possibly better performance, greater customizability. But also more risk of issues, as most likely people get the latest beta versions.
the lg g2 is really a great phone and first where I didn't really need to do all these things. so it depends on what your wife wants.
Converted my wife to a G2
I really understood it in another way, haha

Extremely frustrating

Little by little, Android is becoming iOS. Starting to get very annoyed with the limitations in recent updates. First we get permalocked if we accepted 4.3 OTA update. Now I found out in 4.4, Google has prevented write access to external storage?! And there's no way around it without root? SIGH. Not not only can I not root my phone, but I can't even write to my SD card without plugging it into my PC? What's next, take away our widgets and ability to change launcher/interface? What happened to the old philosophy of Android? It's OUR devices and we should be able to do what we damn well please with them.
I and many others share your frustration!!

That's not good enough. Sure for devices like the Note 2 it would allow a locked phone to become unlocked at any time. But what about devices that never got unlocked like the Note 3 and other future devices? This doesn't resolve their situations.
Also, yes I agree with you OP. I refuse to "upgrade" from this phone to anything else any time soon considering the way these phones are turning into locked up garbage. I'm so grateful for all the work modders and hackers managed to do with this device which allows me to run something as amazing as Cyanogenmod 11 right now. I saw what the stock 4.3+ ROM's look like, yuck. Imagining being stuck with that "forever" is like a nightmare only I'm awake.
Anyways there really is no better alternative to Android at the moment or foreseeable future. If you want a smartphone with even a hint of customizability then Android's your only option.
You are not seeing the big picture. If you want phones that you can hack away at and are not secure there are plenty out there. Verizon and AT&T teaming up with Samsung have gone after large military and commercial contracts with these phones. Therefore they have made efforts to make them as secure as possible. You can thank all the hackers in the world pulling email and banking information off your phones for that. And you probably can throw in thanks for the locked bootloader to all those that returned their bricked phones under warranty.
As I said, you have choices, Nexus, HTC, developer's editions....etc. You just need to do a little research before buying.
Agreed for many of the UI changes. But I understand. They have to appeal to Ma and Pa Kettle.
Hopefully at some point they will embrace custom ROMs with a special model like Linkysy did with their L model. But I'm guessing not.

I went to the HTC M8 and I hated HTC..it is a freaking fast phone!!! Unlocking and rooting was super easy! Won't have to worry about Knox until they upgrade it to L.

Loved the look of that phone and I am not a HTC fan, but that phone looked good.. Contract is not up until next year and I think a move to a different carrier and phone manufacturer is in my future.. Just not sure what yet

Assuming I lived and traveled exclusively in areas where one of those carriers had a decent signal, that could be a good approach. Unfortunately that's not the case.

Trying to not get excited...

Hey everyone, bootloader is finally almost done i will be posting thread shortly and will also be posting my perma root solution. I have a post on aicp/lollipop community on google
---------- Post added at 06:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:58 PM ----------
I am in the final stages of coming out with a apk called PERMA root. It will root while also giving you the option to unlock bootloader. I am testing on two more devices before release. I want to leave nobody unhappy. Therefore any device you may have will work. As new phones are introduced it will only take a couple days to activate from my end. Please be patient because as you already know this is some hard work and long hour testing.
Tested devices: (list includes all carriers) (multiple devices in each listed brand tested to include s4 and s5) Lg, Samsumg, htc, and currently testing last of others. Thanks for the patience.
Be welcome to share accross XDA

Don't get excited people. That thread has become an all out flame war and I see warnings and/or bans coming instead of root.. Oh well... ?
is he saying that the app will be able to unlock the bootloader on the verizon retail version of the note 3? Can i have the link to that thread? Thanks.

He was claiming root and bootloader unlock. But instead of getting everyone riled up he probably should have made it a covert job and then "Bam" here you go. Kinda like when the Rezound got s-off. But the thread got way out of control and it's locked now until he can prove he has something substantial. If you'd like to check it out see the first post in this thread and go to original post quote.
While I love the xda community and have been along time member and highly appreciative of the devs.
I'm just about ready to toss this phone in the garbage.
I miss the days of flashing my phone every week to the latest and greatest when I had my original galaxy note for 2 years.
My 2cents
Wow really your going to get frustrated and throw out a phone that costs 400-700$ because you can't flash roms endlessly yeah i get tw sucks and I want to have better options for roms but even if I lost root I would not throw out my note 3.

I feel the same way about my galaxy bloat 3. First and formost i need a phone that works as a phone. This phone has the worst service and software out of any phone i've owned. As far as the sortware goes i thought i would be able to fix it with cm11 but thanks to verizon and me not doing my home work a head of time i'm stuck with the ****tiest phone i've ever owned. I can't wait for july to replace it with a motorola product.
I must be getting old. I don't see a problem with the stock note 3 and the bloat. Yeah the signal could be better but that is on Samsung more than Verizon. And yes Verizon could shorten the approval process for updates and Samsung could drop tw and put out updates in line with the nexus line as all manufactures should the ui should be a app on the app store and be little more than a launcher for people to choose to use if they want.
Not going to happen. If your on big red you likely don't have a choice or it is the best service in your area or your grandfathered into unlimited. The Samsung phones were the only ones with 2 features I am unable to give up battery that is removable and sd card.

If this phone doesn't end up with Lollipop that's rootable or an unlocked bootloader before February, I'm throwing mine at my Verizon Rep's face and picking up a Note 4. We bought Note 3's for only two reasons. The first reason was that the other Note's were easy to root and flash to CM and the second reason was because of the S-Pen. At this point I would take a loss on the S-Pen functionality just to be rid of all of the Samsung Bloat on my phones.
Wow. sounds like you all should be buying an international variant. trashing you phone or going to a N4 with a locked bootloader is not going to solve your problem. I am pleased with my Rooted N3 and have no issues and will stay with Samsung for a while. Root is nice but it's not going to cause me to put my phone in the trash, there are other things in life that are far more important
Yeah way to stick it to Samsung by throwing out last quarters model and buying the brand new one.
I see both sides, though we didn't have ten or fifteen roms to flash, this phone was not a waste at all. It's a solid phone for my use. But flashing roms has become a hobby and I don't like not doing that either. So even though most of the developers are going to the Nexus. I just don't like having no SD or removable battery either. And how are they handling any replacements for a phone currently not carried by Big Red? May not be the place for me to ask that but I'm curious.
You might want to check out the Note 4 forum for scripts that can disable a ton of the bloatware without root. I am still rocking rooted MJE so I can't test it with kitkat. It supposedly will run on most android phones. Just wanted to mention a potential solution until root achieved.

So locked note 3 to a locked down note 4 when you are stuck with the options of motorola or sony for unlockable phones that are on verizon.
IF you really have to have CM 12 you are going to have to either make sure the phone you get at that time has an unlockable bl or is a nexus.
And as for the note 4 it is only a slight upgrade over the note 3 and both will someday get lollipop note 4 sooner than the note 3...

Yeah it's a great phone. If you are a grandma with Alzheimers and don't know what rooting is. I have it. I use it to lure theives into my place so I can shoot them. I post pictures on Craigslist of it sitting on my front door step. so far Ive had a dog knock my trashcan over... no way to root it man. they've had scientists working on it for months. so far. we've found that Verizon stuck a big FU on it and then charged $770 for and then just for fun they call to remind you that there are companies such as straight talk that charge a fraction of the price and your bill is due. if you can't pay. too bad you can't take your s6 edge plus to another company cuz they love you so much and if you look at that other phone they will slap the piss out of you in public. basically you bought an overly insecure girlfriend in the form of a phone. but hey at least you can't expand the memory with a micro sd right?! I couldn't trade it for a rock being dropped on my foot. ENJOY!
Lol you are hilarious. I bought the phone for 350, its just gorgeous. Would have loved the root which I miss. However its a steal at 350 given the hardware stupendous phone, display, style and camera unmatchable in the hardware section. I bought it unlocked so I can use it anywhere
Hope Verizon unlocks bootloader soon... Cheers...

Yeah I have been hoping for a while. actually I do have a question concerning it and not sure who to ask. If i were to swap the logic board with say a t mobile one would I be able to root it? I know this would basically make it t mobile phone but then i could root it. I found one craigslist for 100. not too hard to do either. I've replaced the screens on a bunch of galaxy phones. and not the cheap two sided tape either but the UV glue and all.
Apparently Verizon S6 Edge variant already has a working root. Dont know why Plus model doesnt have. Looks to me that given it was expensive not many experts bought it and hence no root as developers and experts didnt buy it maybe.

Yeah you may have a point there but man am I hoping you're wrong. especially with the note 7 coming out at $100 more than the s6 edge plus. I will say the one thing that I have been upset not to see is the 16mp camera lately. it seems backwards as heck and I think some of the designers are smoking their own bath water at samsung... I can see the board room meeting now. "I have the absolute best idea ever! let's put a bad ass camera on this thing and then we'll throw away the micro SD slot so you can really only get a picture of Samsung waving and smiling! And then after everyone complains about it we'll bring back the SD slot and the S7 will come stock with a permanent bootloop animation of us flipping them off!" and then the CEO says "genius! and let's not bring back the big screen either. because the dumb asses who buy the s6 edge plus and get use to the big phone will then get the s7 and because it's smaller will drop it. leaving little pieces of glass all over the US and cutting the bastards feet. Get to is boys! next a I want to come out with a 3 in 1 laptop. first you have a tablet mode and then of course the laptop, but then randomly a baseball bat comes out an beats the living hell out of the user. The US will fall just like the south fell to the yankees when they introduced Twinkies and mobile homes."

Looks like. Mostly because not many people bought it because it was expensive and developers also didn't buy it. I'm sure it's easy for any seasoned developer to root it. But I don't know anyone. Anyways very happy for a price I bought it 350 bucks unlocked.

its unlocked?
