[i9100] How to get a fast and smooth running Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 with Nougat 7.1.1 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A fast, smooth running Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 with Nougat 7.1.1, is it possible? Sure, but it is best not to use the latest ROM build. After many tests and comparisons of various Nougat ROMs based on LineageOS I've found out this. The development of the ROM is ongoing very quick, but it's made for many devices. The performance of the CPU is not taken into account. Our S2 is now some years old (since 2011) and has only a CPU with two cores. Standard today is at least a phone with quad core CPU.
Comparing a Nougat 7.1.1 ROM from February 2017 with a current build clearly shows you that the older one runs much faster. This is mainly noticeable when scrolling or if you open apps. In the current ROM there are often lags, it simply needs more performance.
To get the maximum out, a few tweaks with a modded Kernel Adiutor from XDA are necessary, the CPU frequency is set to minimum and maximum 1200 MHz. The battery drain of course is a bit higher - not much, but you have more joy with a smooth running S2.
What do you need for this?
I did made the best experience with AICP 12.1 ROM, build in February 07 2017. you get it here. It runs very stable for daily usage. Only the camera app Snap.apk is buggy at video recordings. You can change this by installing the latest one in my attachment.
The modded XDA Kernel Adiutor is attached too.
The CPU and ondemand governor settings (CPU Governor Tunables) you see on my screenshots. Make sure that the "Apply on boot" toggle is set to on.

Can you tell me where I could find jelly bean compatible CWM recovery ?

Jelly Bean has its own, "built-in" recovery. Unfortunately, I am not aware of whether you can take another recovery for it. I know there is a flashable CWM recovery via Odin for the S2 (I have it here). But this is intended for flashing custom ROMs.

@Nobby1960
Hi, good instruction.
Useful article.

I allways used this file "PhilZ-cwm6-XXLSJ-OXX-4.00b21-signed-JB.zip" and installed it via stock Recovery. (no waranty void message after rebooted system). Copy this file on your SDCard, reboot in Recovery Mode and flash it. Now you can keep runing your device on stock ROM or you can install a custom one with this recovery.

The link to AICP 12.1 ROM is not working; I get 404 Not Found.

Thank you for information. The ROM is no more available on the AICP server. I did upload it to a one click hoster (upload.net) The link in my first post works now again.

Would you still recommend this rom today ? or would the official lineage 7.1.2 be better than this now ?

Compared with the latest AICP 12.1 build from 07/10 it's not necessary to jump back to this older version. The performance from all latest Lineage based ROMs became better. The only thing I use the Kernel Adiutor with the performance settings from my first post. I think you can also use the latest official plain vanilla Lineage 7.1.2.

Hi,
thanx for your instructions. I have tried it!
One problem with the setting where i'm unsure: at the end of the settings, the core2 disabled itself and the minimum frequency was set to 100 automatically. I changed the frequency back to 12.000. Is that OK, or should i leave it at 100 ?
btw. I still have installed stock_kernel_twrp_1120. Is that OK, or do i need another kernel?
Anyway, at this point the CPU tweak has made the perforance a little faster, but it's still much worse than Android 4.12
On 4.12 i was running 5 aktive apps the same time without problems. (Navi, RadarWarning, Mp3, GPSLog, + 1 temporarly app)
On Lineage 14.1 the Mp3 already beginns to stutter and the systems gets very slow when i run only 2 Apps. If i start more apps they beginn to chrash.
So i want to ask, is it possible somehow to get the same (or even better) performance with a custom rom like with the original stock 4.12 ?
Thanks for Info,
Rooster

Hi,
hmm - all settings are correct from the governor like the screenshots in Kernel Adiutor? Both CPU frequencies should set to 1200 MHz. In idle time core 2 stops to save battery, but it must switch up at load to 1200 MHz automatically.
The stock_kernel_twrp_1120 is okay to install this ROM. If you boot in recovery after installation you must see the newer TWRP 3.0.2-1 and you can flash the latest TWRP 3.1.0-0 as an .img file.
The problem with Nougat and most modern apps is, the generally RAM consumption gets higher and higher - that's the biggest bottleneck. So the S2 with only 784 MB comes faster to its limits at multitasking than with the latest stock ROM 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and older, more slim apps. Unfortunately there is no chance to get a higher performance with Nougat. There you feel the age of our good old phone from 2011, it came first with Android 2.3.x Gingerbread

For the best CPU performance set the min. CPU frequency to 600 MHz in Settings/Performance/Proccessor, and activate 'Set on boot'
Can GP 3.6 support 1200 Mhz overclock ? I read the motorola defy can be overclock to 1300 Mhz.
EDIT :
With conservative governor (1100-600 Mhz), I get a better antutu score than ondemand governor : 4807 points.
Will the bluethoot pan sharing connection work?
I used my omnia i900 with some other devices (like galaxy s3) and it's work but with gingerbread or ICS devices didn't work

If we've the 4.2 Player, will we have to compile the kernel ourselves? Because the kernel does not compile on my computer.

@Androthan is working on CM11 for the 4.2. Compiling just the kernel isn't enough, you'll need a device tree of the 4.2 made for CM11 and build a ROM with that.

The kernel source for the 4.2 player, from my github account, are still under constructions and won't work.
And, of course, you don't need to compile it yourself.
I'll start with porting to 4.2 when the build for the 3.6 is a lot more stable.
BTW, the player 4.2 is off-topic here

I'll try to get it to 1.2 GHz (I already know what to do). But I'll to do when CM11 is a lot more stable.
1.3 GHz seems to be a bad idea, it could burn out the cpu and drain the battery

No problem, but I think it's better to add a new frequency entry, not change the 1000 Hz to 1100 or 1200 for a better cpu throttling.
Like this {300, 600, 800, 1000, 1100, 1200}
EDIT : can we have in the future (priority for wifi and video playback) add more governor ? (interactive, smartass, ...)

It's very difficult to add a new frequency entry but I'll try my best.
Yes, I'll add some governors later, when everything is more stable.

I speak a lot, but I don't now how it's difficult because It's too hard for me =P
The bootanimation is kinda big for our screen. Maybe we can resize it?
Also, the home button in US version doesn't work.
Android 4.4.3
***Android 4.4.3 is out***
Google released the Android update 4.4.3. This update contains mostly bugfixes and improvements (Read more here: http://liliputing.com/2014/06/whats-new-android-4-4-3-kitkat.html) Don't expect any new features with this update. CyanogenMod is currently merging Android 4.4.3 into CyanogenMod 11, so we have to be patient. As soon as this is done, I'll update my local source code.
Expect Alpha 3 in the next 4 to 5 days.
Hello,
Thanks for the work to port Kitkat on the Galaxy Player.
Until a more stable version, is it possible to install ClockworkMod 6 and keep the stock rom (2.3.6) ?
This will permit to root the device by flashing superSu from ClockworkMod ?

Sorry but this isn't possible and will end in a soft brick.
Thanks @Quentinga & @Androthan, you saved me from making a stupidity
I keep an eye on this rom and will test soon.
Does music/video playback work on Alpha 2 ? (not able to use the sdcard space and Apollo crash everytime)
Phone feature is enable like in CM 7.2, or it's disable? (It is)
EDIT: (07/06/2014)
1) If the player is plugged in and switch it off, it will restart.
If, however, is not connected, then turns off simply.
2) In alpha2 there isn't the performance menu in option.
Any news with wifi module ? the awesome @zaclimon can't help you ?

[Q] 9000 custom Roms, which fits my requirements ?

I've got an S3 i9300, want to use it as daily driver.
I need an OS that is:
Stable and complete. GPS, Camera, Bluetooth etc.. works
Fast for regular usage (don't want to feel this is old hardware)
has security patches (e.g. stagefright)
preferably has the CM Privacy Manager.
no stock/bloated Samsung ROM
CM12 runs slow. BlissPop (CM12 based) runs slow. MinimalOS (Lollipop) fast but not stable or complete enough, LiquidSmooth old and not updated, AndroidRevolutionHD old etc...
I'm seeing dozens of Roms, I can't try them all.
Which ROMS do you recommend ?
Stock roms run the best. Custom roms are customisable.
I wish I stole my HTC M9.

I myself use i9300 official CM 13 Nightlies but they are kinda buggy for now if you want a totally complete rom so use these:
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/rom-cyanogenmod-12-1-i9300-t3254215( use the latest build only for maximum performance )
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/rom-aosp-i9300-t3207400 ( use Android 5.1.1 version )
And if you want any rom to run smoothly so you will need :
1. greenify
2. greenify donation pack
3. xposed framework
4. supersu
Use greenify to hibernate almost all system apps unless the ones make you buggy and slow like your launcher and Google now and Google services. And you'd better hibernate the user apps you don't need too. This can make you pretty fast and power saving.
Press the tnx:good: button if I helped you.

Wow, thanks for the detailed reply. I never knew Greenify was so important/impactful on overall performance.
I just tested the latest CM11 nightly and noticed it says "android security patch level December 2015". So that's good, it's secure.
One more thing, what are your thoughts on custom Kernels for performance ? I've tried Boeffla and saw a nice difference (with a slightly more performance oriented governor)

It depends on the OS version of your phone and on the build version either for example if you are on the build 20 of cm 12.1 boeffla can make you really fast but if you are on build 30 you have some instabilities coming with it ( as I tried it myself but you can try it too not so sure on this one ) but for the OS versions below 5.1.1 it is really awesome and heavily optimized and bugless.

Thanks, I tested boeffla-kernel-2.12-CM11.0-NG-i9300 with latest CM11 nightly. Phone works great, I think I'll stick with CM11 - I don't really need anything from newer android versions
I vote against greenify and any apps that task manage. Android will keep opening apps regardless of how many times you close them as that is the nature of the operating system. Just let it do what it wants and it'll eventually learn that you don't use that app.
I wish I stole my HTC M9.

Then you vote for speed decrease and lags and battery drain and so. If you want them to happen on your device so NP then. And knowing that S3's ram is limited and low will make the problem worst. Yeah of course if I had note5 I wouldn't use greenify!!? We only use it to solve the low ram problems that everyone suffer from and you know Android is created to install tweaks and control it as you want if not you can buy an ios device and let it do everything for you.

Guys I have tested this rom for many days and it has not shown any lag, that is the main point of it. All other roms out these show some sort of lag.
Testing it for 2 days, everything runs fast and smooth. Installed yahoo aviate launcher, some apps and lolipop nav bar.
The only problem is that there is no 4G/LTE support

AOSP_PURE_STABLE_1.5_Rel_16072016

Time Appropriate Greetings fellas!!!
This is my take on the AOSP 6.0 for Lenovo K3 Note....
AOSP_PURE is ported from Zopo Speed 7 just like it was done during the early lollipop days, with the help of few tutorials available on the internet I managed to port a stable marshmallow rom with few bugs obviously, its a learning process for me and those who wish to test it or modify it are welcome to do it but please credit me and people in my credit section and also please comment in the thread what u have done to correct the bug because in the end all we need is Fully functioning ROM and knowledge of how to do it....
AOSP PURE based on the latest firmware of zopo speed 7 with latest security updates. It is not a modification to zoromax port. This AOSP release has very few modifications so that the user can do whatever you want. Have fun!!!
Known Bugs
LED for stuffs
D2W
3G/4G Connection Issues
SMS Issues
Youtube Issues
Proximity not working during calls
SDCard Corruption
Camera doesnt open
Hardware Capacitive buttons not working (only software touch buttons)Cannot play Video or record sound
Comment if u find more....
this is a stable release except for the usual LED and D2W stuff....rooted, gapps installed, busybox and is MultiLanguage...
This rom comes as two versions ODEXED and DEODEXED
ODEXED ROM means the app have seperate odex files to make them open faster. The odexed rom usually boots quicker but the boot time increases as the number of apps installed increases. In general odexed roms are snappier than deodexed rom but modern smartphones have better processor to make this delay negligible.
DEODEXED ROM means the the odex files are placed in apk instead of being a seperate file, so every time an app is opened it is extracted to load the odex file in memory which takes more time than having odex files outside. But again in current gen processors the delay is negligible. Deodexed rom has long intial boot time but after the first boot no matter how many apps are installed they boot at the same time.
WARNING TEST THIS AT UR OWN RISK....BACKUP EVERYTHING U HAVE BEFORE DOING ANYTHING...
Boot into TWRP recovery
Wipe Dalvik Cache, Cache, System and Data
Flash the file
Reboot....

Added SnapIT and Lenovo Gallery for few options as Stock Camera has some issues.
This version is odexed for better initial boot time, hence the bigger size.
Stable 1
Fixed proximity and sdcard corruption. Bugs left are led and d2w. Removed Lenovo camera and gallery as it had issues with front camera.
Stable 1.1
Fixed the "settings stopped" when opening security in settings and a few tweaks to improve the UI smoothness.
Stable 1.2
Fixed 3G/4G Connection Issues (thanks to sandeep sethi ). Few tweaks to improve overall responsiveness. Relased the rom as two version odexed and deodexed.
Stable 1.3
Fixed SMS issue which was left over in Stable 1.2 and youtube now supports upto 1080p. Added few additional apps like
FDroid - Open Source App Store
Adaway - To prevent ads by replacing host files
Naptime - For better doze behaviour make use of it. Thanks to Fransisco Franco for developing this app
NewPipe - Open source simple app that can replace youtube and also can download youtube videos.
Naked Browser - The most lightweight web browser
SuperSU is now at 2.76.
Stable 1.4

Apparent fix with slow system response [as mentioned in zopo firmware changelog]
Updated to June Security update [as in firmware]
Removed the addition apps included in st 1.3
Replaced Root Explorer with MiXplorer for ethical reasons
Improved UI Response
NOTE
There is a new app in /system/app called "FineSearch" which opens to the newly added search bar as a part of Quick Settings tile. Seems like zopo added it to promote yahoo which sucks. I leave it to the user to remove it if u want. Don't ask me to remove it from quick setting tile, anyone who know how to do it are welcome to do it coz i hate it too
Stable 1.5
Removed FineSearch Yahoo Ad in quick setting tile

i prefer snapit but since the idea is to provide a rom close to aosp it only makes sense to zip it with aosp camera

Hmm.. but change only in camera is not a big deal..
And snapit is far better than aosp...
And good luck with your rom..
During 1st boot it stuck !!!
I flash this rom , during 1st boot it stuck on lenovo logo. You told that keep patience and wait for 10 to 15 mins, I waited for around half an hour. It never boots up bro. Complete waste of data I downloaded and as well as time.
Will this work for k4 note or can u pl port and post a thread?

AOSP PURE based on the latest firmware of zopo speed 7 with May security updates.
Reboot....

of course i wont ,i m just a user, just want to find one rom stable and smooth, and if i removed the pre installed apps in the roms(based on the marshmallow) i experienced before, i couldnt access the system.so i wonder it is the issue of android 6.0 or not. Thanks for your work again.
St 1.4 released
Thanks for providing the first stable AOSP 6.0 experience! I am using 1.3 now for more than a day not as a daily driver. It's stable, however I feel that stock 6.0 is more smooth due to I think better memory management. I am a light user, no games, mostly youtube/chrome/gmail.

Hello ! Best xperia x custom rom ?

Hi everyone, i have been trying lately to improve my xperia x roms and tried a few of them but none seemed to work properly, sometimes random crashing or battery not charging ...
i was hoping you could help me chose a stable rom for everyday use and gaming (mostly emulation).
thank you in advance !!
I only tried "Unofficial LineageOS 16.0 for Xperia X" and "Unofficial AOSP9r46[X-X Dualsim-X Compact]". AOSP has less issues thanks to more modern kernel/drivers & you can use GCam, but of course it lacks all the comfortable things any LineageOS ROM comes with. The LineageOS has a black screen issue which occurs relatively seldom, but still regularly. It happens when you open an app, most often when switching fast between apps like when sharing a file with an app. You then have to kill that app which has gone black, but very seldom you need to reboot since the black screen is so that you even can't see the Android touchscreen buttons anymore to click back/previous app/homescreen.
I you install AOSP make sure to install the version you'll find deep in the thread and the updated boot.img. The folders on my harddrive are named "20200422 build with 4.9.219 kernel update" and "Updated boot.img with 4.9.230 kernel" which contain the files "AOSP-9-F5121-20200422-4.9.219brcmfmac.zip" and "20201003-aosp9-bootimage-4.9.230-f5121.zip" respectively and I noted down the following in a txt-file:
Edit : new boot.img with 4.9.230 kernel should be flashed instead of the one in full ROM archive, should fix some of the intempestive reboots (CPU frequency fix).
Only quickly tested on Kugo. Have the old boot.img at hand in case of problem.

TWRP I'm using is TWRP v3.3.1 for Xperia X (twrp-3.3.1-0-suzu.img).
Btw I never had charging issues, so make sure it's not a dirt/dust or hardware issue (worn out battery can also cause stability issues.
LineageOS 16 is the most stable non-stock rom
