Hello everyone. I noticed something odd with my phone today as play store refused to install updates due to low storage space. Thats odd because i'm %100 sure that i'm not using all space. Now if i connect my phone to pc over usb, then select everything in my internal storage, total size shows 3.64 GB. And using Zen File Manager it shows that used internal storage is 3.82 GB. Thats close enough. But same zen file manager (as well as total commander) shows me i have only 690 MB free left out of 11.79 GB total storage and there is 8.67 GB of "other" files apart from images apps videos etc. My question is how can i find what could be this 8.67 GB of "other" files and how could i access them as i can't find them on pc or on file managers?
Using: Xperia Z1 C6903 on 14.6.A.1.236 (Android 5.1.1) rooted with locked BL.
Seems like file managers can't keep track of app sizes correctly. Also had more than 3 GB in "cached data" in settings -> storage. Deleting cached data freed up space to a point that it makes sense. I'm writing because it may help someone with similar problem.

Often apps makes backup of themselves in root folders which are not normally accessible, so when an app is deleted the data is left behind and occupies space. Similarly there would be many apps which you may have downloaded and then deleted thus occupying many memory space in your device.
Just a simple factory reset will solve the problem

Got a notification that I only got 8.5 Mb left on my memory!!
That seemed a bit weird to me cause I hadn't many movies on my tab.
And I have only added a few apps.
I checked out Storage under Settings.
Media 5.32 GB (I deleted a movie)
Applications 7.52 GB
That can't be right!!
When I click Applications and select All a list appears with the Applications.
Now way that all adds up to 7.52 GB!
I checked the browser cache but that was not the cause.
Any ideas what's causing this and how can I get rid off this crazy number.

since the application limits in size has been altered it is possible that your tab has that ammount of applications.
A good example would ben asphalt 6 or something, they most of the time require alternate downloads that can add up to 600 mb per application.
Could you post a list with your current installed applications?
It lists from top the bottom decreasing sizes.

Looks like you ran out of RAM, not storage.
try clearing cache of high resource seeking apps like google earth,market, google maps, browser etc. Try applications>all>and check the cache size for each (hectic but worth a try)
I recreated the notification by adding a couple of movies to my tab.

After that the size goes rapidly from under 10 MB to under 1 MB.
I checked cache of all applications listed but found nothing disturbing, rather small sizes actually.
Browser cache was 25 MB for instance.
So I really don't know where that 7.52Gb is coming from.
I had only 22.27 MB left and tried to copy another movie to see if it would overrule "the limit" but it didn't, it said I couldn't add more because of the low space.
So this is really a problem if applications take up more than half of the flashmemory.
The only thing I can probably do is to restore the tab to factory settings.
I'll be waiting until the 3.1 update arrives, if it arrives.
Suggestions are welcome though.

try backing-up from rom manager, and format the internal memory!there seems to be a bad file cluster in there!
really. I've had exactly the same problem with you! I tried restarting the device, and it recovers around 400mb instantly! lol

By rom manager you mean the clockworkmod from the market.
I have checked out the free version but I understand your tab has to be rooted.
Mine isn't.
It also said when Samsung you have to download something from xda-forum!
I like to know more about it, I am really not up to date in that field.
Copy the folders on sd card you reckon important as backup on your pc or any container manually, format the sdcard.
OR
The rooting process involves saving the ***.zip file(with the root tools) into sd card, booting into recovery, applying update.zip from sd card and reboot thus you are good to go. For the zip file and details

INSTRUCTIONS
Go into command window> typing cmd in START>RUN
Direct to the drive and address containing the adb.exe file, eg
C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools\
adb push su_busybox_misc-sam_tab_10.1-061611.zip /sdcard/ (you can manually push the zip file into root of sdcard from windows XP etc hence this command not required)
adb reboot recovery ( this perhaps works on 3.0 versions but not 3.1)
volume down to apply update from /sdcard
select .zip
hit power to select
scroll down to apply, and apply.
after flash, reboot
I think I found a way to help you.
Go to settings -> storage -> click at Applications
See all the items in there, and see which one has the biggest memory of all.
There aren't any with huge filesizes, see post 3 and 6.

Well, I suggested you to ,make a folder in your pc drive, copy files from tab' sd card which seem important, mainly those of your movies,music,pics and installed applications than format the sdcard mounted on pc! There seem to be some bad file clusters on the sd card.
I got a message saying I was getting low on space. I bought a program call SD Maid which tells me I've used 1.4 GB out of 1.97 GB. It has an option called "CORPSE FINDER" which comes up with some files like:
com.motorola.batterymonitor
com.motorola.blur.contacts.deferred
com.motorola.android.wmdrm.webpush
com.motorola.android.simmanager
com.mot.readout
com.motorola.dock.provider
these files are located in /data/data/
and /data/data/.com.mot.readout/lib
and /data/data/com.motorola.dock.DesktopDock/shared_prefs/com.motorola.dock
Is is OK to delete these files?
Are there other obvious files I can delete off the phone?
Another app called FREE SPACE tells me I have used 93% of system space or 298MB out of 319MB available. Is there a way to increase the available space?

Agreed, move apps to internal storage. And you can use DiskUsage to see exactly what is taking up how much space and delete it.

Moving apps to external SD or uninstalling apps has NO EFFECT on the SYSTEM space, according to FreeSpace (ROOT). After uninstalling apps the space used by the SYSTEM remains unchanged at 93%:
size: 319.5 MB
used: 298.5 MB
free: 20.9 MB
Uninstalling apps or widgets decreases the space used by DATA which currently is:
size: 2015.8 MB
used: 1371.8 MB
free: 643.9 MB
So the issue is how to decrease space used by the (android) SYSTEM.

nothing user created is being stored on the /system partition. that partition is only for the ROM itself, all your customizations go to /data partition (except if you modify your /system partition with root access and adb/terminal/root explorer) you shouldnt be bothered about the free space in the /system partition. the /system partition is supposed to stay as it is throughout your usage - except if you flash another rom or mod this one. thats it

Thanks for your info. I am rooted, and installed root explorer, but thats it. I have recently gotten the laptop dock. The only reason this came up was because of a message about low space in my drop down menu. I have a lot of apps installed but have ample space in all partitions except the system partition. I didn't write the message down, but if it comes up again I will in order to get an idea of where its coming from.
WAIT. THAT's IT.....the laptop dock. That message must have come from using the dock !!

The message is about the Ram consumption, which the webdock consumes rather fast with several programs open (firefox with many tabs, open office and so on)
From what I understand, the 8GB of internal storage on the DX2 is divided into 2GB for apps, 4.3GB free to do whatever with, and the rest for Android. Right now out the 4.3GB of free storage I have ~800MB unused, which implies I've used 3.5GB. However, when I connect my phone to my PC and scan the contents of that 4.3GB of free storage, it shows that there is only 2.2GB of data on there. Where is the remaining 1.3GB and is there any way I can access/delete it to free up space?
I thought around 2gb was set aside for application storage.
I have no idea how much stuff u have on ur internal storage but u may want to move storage for pictures and.music to external storage..u can just move music files and the DCIM folder to external sd card and reboot which should free up some space...also try clearing cache from stock recovery to see what that frees up if u have never done that...
also in camera app settings to make ur pics store directly to sd card there is a setting for that so u don't have to manually move them...

First off let me say if you want to solve a problem with your phone if you follow what ashclepdia says you'll never go wrong he has a great deal of knowledge on these phone's.
Second I never liked this type of labeling system for the storage on this phone.
Third a short explanation of the storage on our phone's.
Our phone has the following, according to VZW and Moto:
- 8GB of internal storage. This breaks down as 2 GB secure memory and 6 GB of usable memory.
- 8GB of external storage which refers to the removable SD card behind the battery.
In the 2 GB lives the Android system files and installed applications with most of their associated data. Some programs are accustomed to using the "sd card" which I will get back to in a minute. You can look at the status of this 2 GB in 2 different ways: 1. Settings - Storage - Application storage, "Available Space"; 2. Settings - Applications - Storage Use - All - Application Storage (on the bottom of the screen).
The 6 GB can be viewed by: 1. Settings - Storage - Internal Storage; 2. Settings - Applications - Storage Use - Media Area.
When you move things to the Media area, you are taking a portion of the installed app from the 2GB and moving it to the 6GB, which is similar to the way in tho older phones, you moved apps to the SD card. So, the question is why do we move apps to the SD card? In older phones there was far less "internal storage" and you would literally run low on memory for apps. New phones have much more space, so unless you are installing lots and lots of apps, it shouldn't be a problem.
With our phone, they have included internal, hard wired, SD Card-like storage, which can be used, mounted/unmounted, just like an external SD Card. The Media Area is simply a folder on this remaining 6 GB area. In some cases, this is automatically done by some apps, for backup purposes or caches.

I've already set up and moved all my pictures, movies, music, etc. to my 32 GB external sd card. My issue lies with the 4.3 GB of free-to-do-as-you-please storage on the internal sd card.

Which leaves 1.3 GB missing
I guess I'll boot into recovery and wipe cache to see if that does much.
Not sure if this matters with regard to this issue, but I had been running P3's pre-rooted GB since I got this phone and earlier this week I flashed Eclipse 1.3 (loving it). I did wipe data before applying the zip.

I CAN say that if u are running 1.3 eclipse on p3s GB u are on the wrong kernel and that may cause some problems ...
not sure if that's what's causing this issue for u or not. .
also when on eclipse the sdcard and internal storage are flip flopped. to see what space u have on internal storage go to settings>storage>sdcard....that is ur internal storage space when on eclipse....
bootstrap does not recognize that flip tho fyi....
my first recommendations is getting on the 2.3.4 kernel by sbf to 2.3.4
if u flashed 1.3 over p3droids rooted gb then u are still on 2.3.3 kernel ..
which can cause issues...since any eclipse 1.0 or later needs u to have the 2.3.4 kernel...only way to change kernel is sbf or OTA update.
there is a sticky on how to sbf in this forum...don't be intimidated...it is very simple...follow instructions ...
edit::: how bout a screenshot of ur storage setting screen and also ur about.phone screen.((screen shot er (or er2) from market works just fine))
Look in a file manager and see if you have a file named ".trash-1000" or something similar. If you are viewing your files on a PC, it will be a hidden folder. See if you have any files in there. When you delete something it creates a .trash folder and keeps it on your storage device like the recycle bin does on your PC. I think its supposed to "empty" itself but may not have. If you have files on there, you can just delete the whole .trash folder. Just a thought.
Galaxy 10.1 16gb rooted galaxy task 14.
I was running GT 10 and started to get low on storage space. Then I noticed that my GF's 16gb tablet had lots of space left. I installed storage analyzer & saw that I had about 12.5 gb free. When I look in settings it says about 1gb free. So I reflashed to factory, rooted, installed GT 14. Still missing about 11gb of storage. I cleared caches & partitions when I did new root. Did I miss something or is it a hardware issue?
Repartition with PIT file, or possibly your GF stacked a whole lot of movies or your porn is in a folder you completely forgot.
What does your graph show on what consumes the most space?
I tried to attached a couple images to help explain but couldn't get them to upload so......
Under settings>storage it shows the bar almost full(1.3gb available) but under the individual headings(apps, downloads, images......) its says "calculating......" never completes. Also the bar is all black(no corrisponding colors). When I open storage analyzer it shows my list of files & folders. Largest being 350mb with a total of about 1 gb. At the bottom ist reads 12.4gb available. When I click the partition button it shows the SD card with 1.3 gb avail. No other partitions.
UPDATE:
I changed the settings in Storage Analyser to show all partions. This is what it shows:
/SD 13.27 total 1.35 free
/system 568mb total 110 MB free
/data 13.27 gb total 1.35 gb free

You're not missing any storage. You have some big files in there. If you're using storage analyser, you should be able to figure out where they are...
Yeah but the files don't show up anywhere
Data being flooded, are you fond of downloading a lot of games? Most games now are like 700MB, you need something like root explorer to check the /data on what you have that's flooding it. Or just repartition with a pit file and format Problmemo de nada.
The Device Memory section at the storage page in setting displays that:
Total space: 1.97 GB
Applications: 1.23 GB
Available: 49.52 MB
Where did the 700MB gone?
This happens when I upgrade the Android from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2. I've installed less apps in 4.1.2 than in 4.0.4 (I wiped my phone before upgrade).
I tried to wipe dalvik cache which give only 10~20MB. How to freed the eaten device memory?
Also, strange enough, I've move many apps moved to sdcard but it seems their data are still remain in device memory. I check one large apps' info:
Total: 165 MB
Application: 100 KB
USB storage app 51.81 MB
Data: 113 MB
SD Card 0.00B
Does this mean 113MB data still in device memory?

I finally found out what take up the near 700MB space.
I delete all files in /data/lost+found/ freed 666MB.
I use an apps called disk usage to locate this.
Jelly bean takes up a lot more storage space than ICS for a start. How many apps do you have installed? I have about 60 downloaded apps installed (not including the pre-installed apps) & I have 0.97GB free in that partition. Do you have a few hundred installed?

In my App To SD in ZDBox (an integrate toolbox apps with app2sd, taskkill, etc function), I have 43 Apps in phone (only 8 apps movable) and 41 Apps on SD Card, not counting android component. But in the "All" page in Application Management in Options, I got 200 Apps including android components.
I don't know which is more trustworthy but no matter how, many large apps have been moved to SD Card. Even from the "All" page in Application Management which includes many android component, I manually add up the space occupied. It is just 1.25 GB.
Where do the 700 MB gone and how can I get them back?
By the way, how many disappeared device memory do you have, Hopper8? I mean when you subtract the sum of all components including available space from total.
Weird. From what I manually added up all apps in phone and sd card, its just 1.25GB.
But there are 1.23 GB of Application in "Device memory" and 1.66 GB of Application in "USB Storage" in Application Management.
1.23+1.66=2.89 GB >>1.25 GB

Hmm. Without seeing what you're adding up, its hard for me to visualize. It does sound like you're missing some space though.
How did you upgrade to JB? Did you flash via odin? Or accept a Kies/OTA notification? I'm thinking that a full wipe is in order. First step is factory reset.

I did a Wipe Data/Factory Reset and Wipe Cache and flash [Stock Official Firmwares] I9100XWLSW (4.1.2) - United Kingdom (XEU) [05-06-13] with ODIN.
It's difficult to make a list of my apps but as for my adding up, it includes all data except cache of all apps installed on no matter device storage or external SD card. I also checked the apps' cache size with a system cleaner. Only 30 MB of Cache in total.
Do you have device memory not inside any categories (not even in Miscellaneous or System)? Strangely I just have one categories, Application, except available under Device Memory (or Internal Storage in some version) section at Storage in Options.
Hmm. And you have used a few different system cleaners and such to have a look at what's on there?
As for my listings for the storage usage, I've got available, apps, and cached data for my internal storage. Nothing else.
I really don't know if I can be of any other help to you mate if there are any other posters who can help, please do.

I've got the same problem. Running Revolt/JB ROM. But had the same problem with the previous ROM (AOKP/JB).
Storage tab in settings reports: total space: 1.97GB , Apps (app data & media.. : 0.95 GB, Available: 242MB.
So yeah. Android's using some fuzzy math here, or something isn't being reported properly.
I did a full factory wipe, no luck fixing the issue.
95 apps, rough count just flipping through the screens in the app drawer.
