Is it possible to change the Recent view to Grid instead of Rolodex? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Some phones, like the Blackberry Priv, has the ability to switch from views at the Recent used apps.
I wanted to know if this is port-able to other Android phones.
I find it painful to use the Rolodex at the Recent (using rooted Sony Xperia XA stock ROM (Marshmellow))
I've tried to find something concerning this, but the only thing that I could find is that only the Priv has this nice option
If it's not possible, a widget on the desktop that has the same purpose is also welcome, couldn't find anything as well

Bump, anyone?

[Q] Root, asus etc

Hi guys!
So still learning my tablet to know and at the moment I have managed to make different wallpapers for each screen and downloaded some funny games.
So now I'm hungry for new experince! (Can you even say this in english? )
All the time people are talking about rooting their devices, is it the same thing when you jailbreak an iPhone? And when you do it, what does it to your device?
I'm really carefull about doing anything stupid since I'm from Europe and bought my Galaxy 10.1 in US.
Then people are talking about asus widgets and they have to push them to certain folders. I'm like
Something i'm really curious about, how do I get some new icons for my stuff? I would like to change some of them, but where do I get them? I have the Desktop Visualizer but need the icons.
What is honeycumb? Touchwiz is the interface we use navigate within our tablet, right?
I really want to learn this stuff, but when I read about it, i'm lost from the start. Everything I can tell me, so I can understand you guys in the forum would really be appreciated!
So, I'm by no means any techie who dares to compare myself to any of the geniuses in here.
But I can help you out a little bit..!
Rooting is nothing more than giving yourself full control over your tablet. When you're NOT rootet, certain aspects of controlling the tab is "locked", so to speak. And that goes for the apps, you install to. Certain files can not be changed, over-written, deleted or even just "watched", if you're not rooted. It's kinda like giving admin-rights on a PC..
Honeycomb is nothing more than the name of the Android-version for tablets, and Touchwiz is the interface and framework Samsung uses for all its Android-product - a way to differ from the other android-products. This tab was first sold without Touchwiz in some parts of the world (running barebone Honeycomb) and then got a touchwiz-update later on. Many of Samsungs own apps will not work on even Samsung-devices, if they do not have TW installed, as they're based on TW-framework.
Pushing something to a given directory basically means copying/moving it to that directory. However, as these directories are mostly "locked" folders, you will need to be have rooted your tab to do this. The "pushing"-term comes from using ADB, where you use a command that says to push the given file to the given directory. Most times off, though, you can do this with a simple file manager (with root-rights ) on your tab.
The only way I know to get new icons is to either
a) Use another Launcher or
b) flash a custom rom with other icons.
However, I'm sure there are other way to do this, that I'm not aware of myself
Hope this helps a bit. Tried not to make it too long and confusing, but I'm not so sure that went too well
Launchers like ADW EX allow you to download "theme" packs, which usually contain a lot of different and new icons.
How did you get a different wallpaper on each screen? Edit: Multipicture Live Wallpaper lets you do this.

Ok, that I get. Also what I thought, so almost the same thing jailbreaking and iPhone, but people with the galaxy have many more options afterwards.

If I'm not tottaly wrong we are using Android 3.2 / 3.1 and that is what we call Honeycomb? Simply the name of the Android version. And as I thought, Touchwiz is the interface. I read somewhere it was sold without Touchwiz, but what difference does Touchwiz make? As I wrote, I bought in the US but I have no idea whether I had touchwiz or not. There came some new things after the update, "Indstillinger (Its on danish, dont know the word in english, but maybe "options"?) was completely change from black to white.

Ok, so when people are talking about pushing something, that probably 'cause they have rooted their device? Not when I simply move a picture from one place to another?

Another launcher, you mean another thing then Touchwiz?
Flash a custom rom? I'm lost again
That helped a lot! If you can explain me what "flash a custom rom" means, and simply "flash" and "rom".
Thank you !!

A Launcher is basically the the desktop of your tablet/phone. It is what displays the shortcuts, application list, widgets etc. that you are using. It is used to 'launch' all other applications on your device. So if you don't like the default launcher on your phone or Tablet, you can use one from the marketplace. there are lots of different options but so far I only know for sure that ADW EX supports honeycomb (Android 3.x)
If you have ADW EX, you can download ADW Themes from the market, and those will change up the appearance of your device, including icons.

[Q] WM Titanium Launcher for Android?

I am probably one of like 10 people that miss my titanium launcher from WM, but I thought I would throw this out there anyway.
I am looking for a launcher with the same functionality. I found the Faded / Zune launcher, but it is exceptionally basic and doesn't allow for the exact functionality that I miss from my old phone.
So, I was wondering if anyone had seen an alternative or even a way to skin an existing launcher to work like the old titanium from WM. (up down, language based, each item can have the option of sliding left / right to get to other options).
I know some people will wonder why I would want something like this, so here is my explanation. I have used a ton of different launchers over the years and have always come back to titanium whenever I wanted something practical. I also just like the idea of being able to switch between launchers that actually have a very different look and feel.
Thanks in advance.
Single bump to see if anyone can help me out.
Won't bump again.
Thanks in advance.

[Q] "Favorites" app

Hey all,
I have recently installed ADW Launcher EX in order to set my tablet up using the Hubs philosophy. Looks great so far, but the one thing I did like was the favorites shortcut in the status bar on the stock sony launcher. I would like to add it somewhere, but it won't let me add it, probably because it is some kind of hidden system app.
Does anyone know how to add these hidden system apps to homescreens or wherever without need root access or a custom rom?

Without some serious dev work, it looks to me like this is not possible. It seems to be a part of the stock launcher from what I can tell. You might be able to write a non-launchable app that just launches the Favourites, but that would only work if they had any public Intents built-in.
Not too sure, since I'm at work and can't check right now, but thats just my thoughts.
Thanks,
I had thought as much. I actually don't mind the sony stock launcher, just wish I could create shortcuts that can jump to certain screens like in ADW launcher. I'm sure if I rooted, I could find some way to access that applications independently, but I don't really want to go that route with my tablet. My phone was enough lol

ex jailbroken iphone user needs help

Hello kind strangers,
Have searched for the last two weeks for answers to my questions/needs/requirements but have come up with zilch.
Would very much appreciate your assistance.
I've rooted my htc m8 and flashed viper on it, I'm very pleased so far with the performance but and it's a big but, there are a few things lacking .
Here's a list of what I've been looking for:
1. Something that allows me to quick compose, quick reply, etc text messages from the lockscreen without me having to switch off my security password /pattern.
I've tried textra and glowfly, but none of these hit the spot.
I've been using Activator on my iPhone for years and am very surprised that Android doesn't have something similar.
Is there somethin like activator that allows you to make your own custom gestures as well as allowing you to change the functions of your hardware buttons?
Viper allows you to limited gestures etc, I want to be able to do gestures etc on my lockscreen, that actually opens apps and does things as opposed to taking me through the unlock process (am I goin too far now?:/)
2. I haven't used tasker yet due to being so new to Android, but have heard great things about it and will be looking into this more.
I'm assuming tasker allows users to swap profiles?
3. Multiwindows: I understand that Omni Rom comes with this function, but I don't want this Rom:/
What would be the best way to multitask without having to flash another rom?
4. What's the best floating app that you guys have used?
5. I really like customising my phone, viper does allow this , but is there another Rom that does this better without me losing sense? I thought I would dislike sense but it's started to grow on me.
6. Lockscreen apps - I've looked at both widgetlocker and dashclock and none of them appeal cause of the lack of security.
Is there somethin g that intergrates with the stock lockscreen, which will display notifications better, allow theming , widgets, as well as help with point 1 (quick compose and quick reply etc)?
I apologise in advance for the noobish questions, but I've spent more than a week searching for the answers and haven't found anything.
Would very much appreciate your input and thank you for taking the time to read this post.
Regards,
Swat Valley
Perhaps I may have posted in the wrong section:/

Welcome to android.
Many of your wants and needs can be met by using the mod called the Xposed Framework. This little guy allows "hooks" on to various calls to the system and redirects them to the Xposed Framework and the modules that you add to it. With this enabled you can do everything from stop ads to mod the status bar, lock screen, themes, and so much more. One caveat: This is currently not working with ART runtime, but not likely you are running that anyway on the One yet. It's also already included in your rom.
Notifications from a a Pattern/PIN/Password locked screen:
http://gs4.wonderhowto.com/how-to/a...protected-lock-screen-your-galaxy-s4-0149781/
(yes it says for the GS4, but the module is listed to work with the One as well) http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.labtech.mod
Custom Gestures:
Lockscreen -
HTC Gesture Modifier http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.mohammadag.htcgesturemodifier
HTC Sense 6 Toolbox http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.sensetoolbox.six
Anywhere but Lockscreen (unless you use a custom LS) -
Gesture Navigation + Multitouch Gestures http://repo.xposed.info/module/ind.fem.black.rayyan.xposed.gesturenavigation
All in One Gestures https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phoenixstudios.aiogestures
GMD GestureControl https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goodmooddroid.gesturecontrol

MultiWindow:

http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.lovewuchin.xposed.xmultiwindow
Different interpretations of multitasking. There are also tons of different side bar type apps that you can access from swiping from an edge of the screen to activate shortcuts to your favorite apps, contacts, settings, recents, etc. that are accessible from anywhere but the stock lockscreen.
Swipepad https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.conduction.swipepad.android
Glovebox https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fb.glovebox
Sidebar https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rootuninstaller.sidebar
And so on... (my fav is Swipepad, especially after the last update which improved the performance greatly)
Floating apps:
Sorry, don't really use them.
Custom Sense roms:
Not saying Viper is the best, but you won't really find much that will be MORE customizable than a Viper rom. There are a few on the same level though, such as InsertCoin, Renovate, SkyDragon, and RayGlobe currently.
Lockscreen:
You can enable adding widgets (also in Settings > Security) and the AOSP lockscreen (like on a Nexus device) from the Venom Tweaks app as well. I like some lockscreen apps, like WidgetLocker, but at the end of the day, the 3rd party lockscreen replacements are either lacking in functionality(there are some that do have good security options, most do not), use more battery power, and end up lagging because when you wake the phone it might take a sec for the app to turn on as well where typically the stock lockscreen will be instantaneous. As far as Notifications - well, the phone has that option too, under Settings > Security > Notification Settings. Another alternative is some like Metro Notifications https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nlucas.wp7notificationslite which displays notifications a la Windows Phone style (and iOS) as banners, giving you options to swipe to dismiss or click to launch.
Hope that will get you started on your quest.

Shelf, Any issues, customization's or mods?

Hi,
I recently upgraded to Oos Android 6 Marshmallow. I am enjoying the new Shelf feature which oneplus offers. I do have some questions though that I thought others would find useful if answered in a thread.
I know some people have mentioned shelf has a refresh issue, that it doesn't auto update widgets pinned to it, example: weather. Are any of you experiencing this, if so, is there any way to fix it?
For what I use shelf for, its pretty basic, and all I really need. I would however like to remove the recently used apps widget and attach a favorite app widget where I can pin the apps I want. Is there any way to customize shelf to pin the apps I select or to use a app pinning widget to show the apps i want(I couldn't find an app pinning widget on play store) on shelf?
Last question, Has any developer here played around with shelf, tried customizing it or added any needed features to it? If so I would be curious to know the changes you made or any releases.
Impossible to modify or tweak Shelf....
To change what is in the panel, you have to long press on it or on the icon to modify.
Then swipe left or right the widget you want to erase. (sorry not really precise, but don't have OOS anymore...)
On the 3.1.4 version, no problem with shelf for me.
But you should erase all "launcher 3"'s datas and reset it if you have some.

Thanks for the reply, Why is it impossible to tweak shelf?
I am on 3.1.4 and I haven't experienced any refresh issues yet, I was more curious if others were experiencing any. I know how to change the widgets and customize the panel, but like i said instead of recent apps I want favorite apps. Since shelf doesn't have this feature by default I assumed the best way would be to get a app from google play which allows you to pin apps to a widget on your home screen, then you could just use that widget in shelf. I haven't been able to find an app that does this though, If anyone knows of any, please post them in this thread.
It's too much inserated in the OnePlus system to be modified.
