I have the strangest issue with my finger print scanner - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Device: Redmi Note 4Global version (Snapdragon 625, 64GB / 4GB)
I have the strangest issue with my fingerprint scanner, in addition to some other problems.
Started In RR rom latest build.
My main issue:
The phone will not recognise my left index finger(that i used to unlock with regularly ). But works perfectly fine for all my other fingers
When I try unlock with my left index finger, it says "notrecognised", I then have to use my pin to get in again
But if I use any other finger that is registered, it unlocks. NOT ONLYTHIS, but if I use my left finger even once, I have to use my pin. But if I geta "not recognised" for any of my other registered fingers, I can thenretry with the same finger, and it unlocks. It seems like my left index finger always forces the phone to resort to my backup unlock method (pin, pattern, password), but my other registered fingers seem to have unlimited tries.
It doesn't make sense. If it was a software issue, it would not be consistent across the different ROMs
If it was an issue with my finger, nothing has changed since yesterday. I haven't got any cuts, or markings.
If it was a hardware issue, it shouldn't recognise any of my fingers.
What I've tried:
1. Removing the finger, and re-adding it
2. Washing my hands
3. Cleaning my fingerprint sensor
4. Taking my case off
5. Using Pattern +fingerprint unlock
6. Wiping cache, system, dalvik cache, internal storage, data, and reinstalling the ROM
7. Flashing another custom ROM (AOSP Extended)
8. Going back to my original ROM (Resurrection remix)
9. Flashing back to stock using MiFlash (latest MIUI version)
10. Going back to RR
11. Going back to AOSPextended

Try this -
Screen lock > register your unrecognised finger
and add patern/pin
then go to settings
and don't delete the fingerprints
but remove the screen lock itself
and then add screen lock and register fingerprint
This is working, thanks to @JackSparrow17

Confirm the App is working in G4 - Turn your back cam as finger print sensor

Finger Print App lock - Unlock the lock 100% safe thru your fingers.
App locks allow us to keep the system and user application safe, I would like to take App lock into next leave using camera we made the first finger print app lock for all the devices.
Here you can download the application - ad-free version for xda users
Donation Version - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fingerprint.applockpro
Free version GP - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fingerprint.applock
There are few phone in market has Finger print sensors - like One plus 2, Elephone p8000, UMI harmar, etc.. We wanted all the phone user should have a access to finger print sensor without the sensor, so we made the first app which can use the camera and act as a finger print sensor.
We made a simple application which can use the Camera Sensor and Un-lock the locked Apps.
If the Finger print is failed to detect, automatically the Pattern lock or Number lock will open and ask the password.
Unlock the app thru your fingers.
Finger prints are Encrypted by default.
Choose the option which way you want to unlock the apps ? Finger print ? Numbers or Pattern?
Requirement for Finger print - All you need a good Camera with Flash, I believe 8Pix Camera with Flash can do the real job.
We are looking for Video to post over google play store.. help us..

This is a terribly complicated app that gives zero extra security. A real fingerprint scanner is 100% secure and absolutely hassle free.
PC is different
The concept is complete different.. hope you understand we are using Image processing..

The reason of this not being to work out in comparison to the other "Fingerprint Sensors" out there is because fingerprint sensors are meant to be stealth, and be done in stealth. If you are going to on the flash and have the phone scanning for your finger and takes 15 seconds to process the whole finger, by that time people will already know what you are doing and that defeats the point of it being a proper way to secure your phone, in all sorts of situations.
And also, the video is ridiculous. But nice try nonetheless. If you are able to get the phone to capture your fingerprint by just placing it in front (like literally 1cm away) and without the needs of a flash, you got my money.
Looks like a big joke to me. I unlock my phone just by a swipe, your system takes too long, use APN+flash and is not certified to work. At least you made me laugh.
Welp, this whole community just shot you down. Nice idea though. but not practical.
This is a classic case of "making an app for the sake of making it" but not care about why such functionality exists in the first place.
Finger scanners exist not because people want to scan their fingers, but because it's faster, more convenient and more secured than using a pin lock or a pattern lock.
Those are the tenet of finger scanning, if you can come up with a better method to unlock the device (i.e. even more faster and convenient) then whether or not that method uses a finger scanner doesn't matter.
experiment
I believe the finger print scanner is experiment, we have pin and pattern lock too..
The video has made my day. On the other hand I totally agree with others that it's not practical at all and scanning your muddle finger in public would raise quite a few eyebrows.

I agree, soon I will try my best to make it more fast.. Mean time you can use the pin or pattern

You must understand that there are many free apps out there that does the same features in regards to using a PIN or a pattern, so either you do a brand new feature to actually unlock the phone, or rework on your fingerprint scanning "feature".
Like I stated before, if you really wanted such a feature to work, it is be able to do the following with ease.
1) Scan your finger within 10-15 seconds so that it will not look awkward in situations.
2) Flash is a no go for such stuff.
3) The UI definitely needs to be fixed a LOT in terms of the scanning and recognition part, the main UI seems decent and nice actually, with the hexagon design to access different menus and such.
4) Includes other ways to unlock like Bluetooth app press a button to unlock or something that would make your app be different from others and make people want to use your app.
There you go.
thanks a lot
Really am happy with your review.. I will fix all the issues..

Fingerprint scanner gestures

On Huawei's other phones with fingerprint scanners they feature gestures on the scanner, a lot like a touchpad on a laptop. You can swipe down for the notification tray and swipe it up, double tap to clear the tray, swipe up for the recent apps, and long press to go to the home screen.
Since none of this was mentioned to be included in M and I know that's custom Huawei software. I was still wondering if any devs out there might be wanting to work on an app to add these functions, or if something similar already exists. This really makes the scanner a lot more functional.
They also have a safe and app lock in their software 2 other great additions. I know I've seen an app lock for the Samsung phones, and not sure if it'll work on just any phone with a scanner. While these are great additions on the Huawei phones, their skin is not. I'd love to see stuff like this incorporated on stock version of Android. I know nothing about programming, but just hope some eager devs are out there and looking to enhance what the scanner can do and take better advantage of it.
I hope it does have this feature but I haven't heard anything about it either...
No, it doesn't have it.

What about turning the screen on? Do you have to press power button, and then put your finger on the fp reader, or you can directly put your finger on the reader and screen goes on and phone is unlocked?

Unlike the Xperia Z5, and Samsung phones (not 100% about Samsung phones), you do NOT need to turn on the device first. Simply putting your finger on the scanner is enough to wake it up and unlock it. The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 does that very well and is very accurate. This bodes well for the 6P for obvious reasons.
Yep. On Huawei Mate S, we can slide down on the scanner and it brings down the notifications list. I would really love to have that kind of gestures implemented so hopefully some devs would implement it on roms. *fingerscrossed*

Samsung requires you to wake the device first. Basically you have to tap the home or power button then let it read your fingerprint. Kinda lame. I wish it were like the new nexi
Xposed will add this if someone makes it. I use gesture control but using the finger print scanner would be so much better

I've seen no mention of that being built into M, but on Huawei phones with their EMUI skin they have an app locker which does this. It's a really great feature for a phone with a scanner. It's great to lock down banking apps or whatever else you want to keep people out of.
I know someone has created an app like this for Samsung phones, however I'm not sure if it'll work with other phones using a scanner. Hopefully someone creates something like this soon if it doesn't.

As far as Xposed mods, that would require root and would also make it so you can't use Android Pay right?

I have the note 5 as well, on it right now. Like you said, you have to physically press the button before it will read the fingerprint. The point was that with the new nexi, you only need to place your fingerprint on the reader for it to simultaneously wake up and unlock the screen. Not something the note 5 does

Marshmallow has API's for app developers to implement this. I ordered this phone because I want to incorporate it with an app idea I have. I'm not sure if Marshmallow has this built in where you can limit access... I guess you could set up different accounts on the device which would limit access to the device based on fingerprint.
Not sure it can keep your wife/gf out of your snapchat account

Maybe they changed things with Note 5 but Note 4 does not do anything by just touching the home button you have to press. It's a crappy scanner too. I cannot wait for my 6P to arrive and forget about the Note 4 (well, I'll use it for VR)

Fingerprint Scanner Problem in 6.0 MM

Hi guys!
I really love this phone, but I have a really, really, really annoying bug. I have only 2 days with this phone (MM updated since the first day). When I try to unlock with my finger it works most of the time, but in some occasions it ask me for the knock code or the pin directly, giving me no chance to use my fingerprint to unlock the phone. This is really annoying because I want to use the fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone and it does not let me. Does anyone have the same problem with the V10? Any ideas for a possible solution? Thanks a lot!

We have this problem too and assume you are using a third party launcher (Nova, Google, etc). Switch back to LG stock launcher and it fixes the problem. Think it has something to do with the lockscreen permission changes from Lollipop to Marshmallow.

I'm actually using Nova. I will switch back to LG Stock Launcher (uggly, by the way), and I'll tell you if it worked or not for me. I'm thinking on the same about te permissions in MM. There is no way to upgrade permissions from the settings or something like that to keep using a third party launcher?
Thanks a lot for the help!

I ran with LG's launcher for the past couple of weeks and since the recent beta updates to Nova shows no sign of a solution, I've reverted back to Nova and just switched to pattern unlock for the time being.
You know, even using nova, you can double tap the notification bar to turn off, and still use the fingerprint to unlock.

Try to factory reset, or change the unlock method to a different one, and then go back to fingerprint.
already did.factory reset by lg bridge..hmmmm

Speak for yourself.
I'm on MM on my H960A AND I'm using Nova Launcher since the first day. Never had this issue. I only had a problem once after unlocking the bootloader. You have to enable "OEM unlock" in the developer settings prior to unlocking the bootloader and I did not disable that option again afterwards. The fingerprint sensor did not work at all with this setting enabled. You can register new fingerprints but unlock does not work.
Since I disabled this option I have no issues with Nova and fingerprint. Should you have unlocked your bootloader as well make sure you disable "OEM unlock" again.
I'm on MM and using Nova prime but I don't have any problems with the Fingerscanner!

Hi!
I have this phone for 4 days and i had the same problem like you,
I use to lock my screen with third party applications like:
Greenify or Screen Off and Lock
And for this i have the same problem like you,
If you had the third party application for locking your phone, you can uninstall them or lock your screen by double top or power button.
Good Lock!

Try this...
I've had this problem also. It seems to have started after a security update from T-Mobile.
Try this fix and let me know how it works for you:
Follow these steps:
1)Goto settings -> fingerprint & security -> fingerprints -> then delete all fingerprints
2)Then goto apps -> switch to show system apps(im using 6.0) -> find com.lge.fingerprints then remove data and cache memory.
3)Goto storage & usb -> clear cached data
4) Then restart your V10
5) After that, add fingerprints in fingerprint lock then it detects your finger.
If it doesn’t detect your finger, repeat the steps.

Xposed Modules Compatibility: PCB, AndroidNify..

Is anyone successfully using the following xposed modules on your rooted stock v10 MM. I've had crashes, loops, errors with each at different points but really liked them. Not sure if they are conflicting with other modules or what but would like to re-enable
PerfectColorBar
AndroidNify
Fingerprint Enabler
Boot Manager (I'm pretty sure this one is fine but I haven't enabled it since I had a boot loop the led to brick)
Any insight on working versions you're using would be awesome. Especially for nify and perfectcolorbar
I've searched those forums for V10 already and answers are convoluted
I use finger print enabler no issue. Although on boot the screen still says unable to unlock with finger on startup but if you place your finger on the scanner without pressing the power button it unlocks.
