band selection and signal issues??? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Got a sprint varient. After now 2 days of searches and reading trial and error.
My g5 sprint gsm unlocked. No matter how i select radios gsm gsm/cdma lte auto everything.
I'm picking up band 5 lte tower. I verified these readings with a att s6 edge.
randomly hpsa and very rarely a gsm network but g5 does connect to all same bands and netwroks as s6 side by side in lte discovery.
On all my att phones on lte discovery primary is lte band 2. G5 wants to default to band 5.
It did connect to band 2 for a few min with great signal might i add. Secondary connection is live on in lte discovery on s6 edge with gsm and network info listed.
Now again my g5 is on 1st lte band 5 most of the time and the 2nd connection is rarely picking up but has switched a few times between hspa and gsm just like att phones info in discovery. but usally sitting here with gsm and a n/s
As my g2 g3 g4 all were sprint on att no problem I didnt figure the g5 would be any diffrent
This seems like a connection and band priority issue not a compatibility issue.
Am i missing something? i cannot find band priority in any hidden menus. Or did sprint and lg take away some of the versatile sprint radios functionality?
sorry for being long winded
Its just weird. It will make calls, text.mms, internet all on 3g 4g and lte. But signal keeps dropping. While it continueously switches from lte to 3g band 2 and 5 Does not drop calls. Sometimes i have to make a call a time or 2 to get connected to the network. Texts seem to be coming through on time.
thanks in advance guys

from what i need i gotta either set band priority or find setting for lte/gsm/umts which i cant find

i am also getting too low reception

[Q] ATT Galaxy Note on Rogers no LTE

Hello all
I haven't seen the issue below posted so I thought I'd put it out there and maybe we can figure out whats going on.
I recently purchased an ATT Galaxy Note because of price and vanity . I have an ATT Galaxy Note which I have rooted using mashi's ROM. Its unlocked. It has Rogers LTE sim and I have an LTE data plan. However I do not appear to get LTE connection/speeds. No LTE indication in the top bar. Speed test reveals HSPA+ - esque speeds. This is throughout my LTE coverage area in my city. No LTE indication has ever been shown on my device. Support has confirmed everything is okay from their end.
I was under the impression that the ATT Galaxy Note used 1700 AND 700 for LTE or at least it had the radio enabled for said frequencies. Rogers network uses only 1700 I think (from what I understand the 700 spectrum in Canada has yet to be auctioned off for LTE). Only possible issue I see is that perhaps ATT Galaxy Note only has 700 band enabled for LTE and thus it makes sense that it doesn't work on Rogers' LTE.
The att website says band 4 and 17 for LTE on the galaxy note so I would think both 700 and 1700 are enabled for LTE. However further reading on the internets suggests that ATT only uses 700 for LTE, and Rogers only 1700 as suspected. I suppose my assumption was incorrect and ATT disabled 1700 LTE for fun (along with NFC and hspa+/LTE toggling).
Any one else experiencing the same issue? Maybe flashing Rogers radio onto the ATT Note will fix it (and break video playback)?
Thanks
What are your APN settings? Can you flash the attached Rogers LTE APN Backup and Restore xml and see if you get anything? Make sure you are setup to use Rogers LTE apn settings
APN:
ltemobile.apn
apn type: internet+mms+supl
I double checked each setting on that setting page with support and they said they pushed the settings onto my phone, twice.
is the file you attached just all the settings for the access point settings page?
cheers
Hi,another option you have, now there is a custom Rom based off rogers software in the development section that you could flash. I have at&t software on my telus note and i have had some problems

I was having this problem on my Telus Note.. Not sure if you have tried this. Settings-Wireless and Network-Mobile Network,Network Mode.. Mine was set to GSM/HSPA Auto Mode, Switched to GSM/HSPA/LTE Auto Mode and all is good for me now.
Thanks taking the time for the suggestion, but the ATT Note does not have the network mode option in the settings (ie I cant enable/disable LTE), but the Canadian Notes do have this option.

Dev Lumia 920 stuck on 4G. Won't switch to LTE on Rogers

Hey Everyone,
I picked up the Dev version of the Lumia 920 and have been using it for a couple days. Everything has been great except the phone doesn't seem to hit LTE. It stays on 4G. The area I'm in does have LTE and when I put my sim card back into my 900, LTE works fine.
I've spent some time on the phone with Rogers and attempted to reset settings on their side and have even registered the device IMEI with them to no avail.
Does anybody know what I can do to get this to work? I'm fine keeping the phone on 4G but would love to see it on LTE eventually.
Thanks in advance!!
Go into cellular settings and make sure your highest connection speed is set to LTE and not 3G. Also make sure you have your APN set correctly. Without the right APN you won't get any evidence of LTE on the device. Once you set it correctly LTE should magically start working.
I have tried manually inputting the APN for Rogers LTE and that did not work. My sim also has settings programmed which show up and can be selected. The first is Rogers 3G which doesn't work at all and the second is Rogers LTE which makes everything work but only gets me a 4G connection.
The highest connection speed is set to 4G as it doesn't have an LTE option which is similar to how it was on my 900. Upon picking 4G, it should just hit LTE but it doesn't. I've taken the sim out and put it into the 900 and confirmed that LTE does work but when I put the sim back into my 920, I only get 4G.
4G is LTE ...
That's what I initially thought but the phone indicator should actually say LTE instead of 4G. I've checked this on my lumia 900 as well as on other 920's seen around the net.

hmm never seen that .. got any screenshots of photo's of a 920 showing this? That would mean I have not been on LTE even once !
For the current signal the Rogers variant shows
3G
4G -- refers to HSDPA etc
LTE -- refers to LTE
I know this because I experienced LTE on AT&T with a Rogers 920. But it didn't start working until I had the right APN.
The options in Cellular Settings for highest speed are 2G, 3G, LTE. Make sure it's set to LTE.

on the dev version of the phone (from MS build, which I also have), 4G is LTE. If you are on 3g you will get an H indicator. It won't say LTE.
Trust me, if it says 4G, it is on LTE. I've done some speed tests, and a few other tests, it really is LTE.

thanks! I'll take your word for it. I found it weird that it never said LTE but speeds have been fairly good!
Are you sure '4G' is LTE on the dev version? Speeds alone won't necessarily tell you.
On the Rogers variant, I'm seeing something like this:
'3G' --> non-HSDPA UMTS
'4G' --> HSDPA, HSPA+
'LTE' --> LTE
It's possible for the MO to customize some of these strings and they do it for marketing reasons. On the MS variant I'd expect the indicators to be a default set that are closely tied to the actual technology without any of the marketing-speak, something like
3G -- non-HSDPA 3G
H -- HSDPA
H+ -- HSPA+
LTE -- LTE
I could be wrong.
Where did you guys pick your Dev versions up?

I'm using an Unlocked Rogers Lumia 920 on the Telus network in Calgary. At first I assumed seeing 4G on the screen meant I was connected via LTE (the speeds were reasonably fast). However it turns out I just don't have LTE coverage in my house.
I was visiting a friend one day and noticed LTE had popped up, did a speed test and it was significantly faster.
Here are a few speed tests I've done around Calgary using the Free Speed Test app (all numbers in mbps):
my house, 4G: 7 down, 2.75 up (not sure which location I tested against)
friends house, LTE: 12.21 down, 0.88 up (tested against Idaho)
friends house, LTE: 16.56 down, 1.77 up (same physical location as previous test, tested against Seattle)
at work, LTE: 15.16 down, 5.67 up (tested against Seattle)
Next time I'm downtown I'll do more testing there. I would assume the coverage is better as you get closer to city center.

Best setup for UK ONE on AT&T

So I love my HTC ONE.... Fantastic phone.. No question about it.
As I posted else where I have the UK model and I am on AT&T in the USA. It's working, but the HSDPA and 3G is bouncing around quite a bit and it jumps to E really quickly. And it loses the signal quickly in low signal areas. More than any other phone. If I switch the network to GSM, I have full signal almost everywhere.... But no data bandwidth.
It was suggested that I might need to look at my setup.
So here is what I have.
I have a STD LTE data plan
I have a STD sim that work on all my other LTE enabled phones
My APN is Called Phone and has the same setting as I find on the forum for a 4G setup...ie it is NOT the wap and cingular setup.
I have selected WCDMA and GSM networks (I know the phone is not compatible with AT&T LTE bands), but it acted the same way even when it was on the default GSM WCDMA and LTE Auto setting.
Does anyone know else I should check or change?
PS. I will likely buy the developer model, or the AT&T model as soon as it is available... this phone is that good!!!
Thanks for your help.
Nick
PS. I will be in Korea next week, so I am curious how the LTE will function there.... I will let you know. I think they have the 2600 band on one provider and that overlaps with the UK bands

Tmobile 4g

I recently bought an unlocked Atrix 4g off ebay to use on my tmobile plan. Everything went smooth except that I'm having issues with slow internet. I've looked all over for a solution(youtube, google, xda forums, etc.) All I've been able to come up with was that until late 2012 this phone wasn't even able to connect to tmobile except on 2g, and a bunch of useless(to me) instructions on how to change my APN.
At this point the phone tells me I'm on 3g, and I consistently have 3-5 bars. My old sidekick had 4g in 90% of the area and 3g everywhere else, so I know for a fact that there is coverage. However when I do a speed test I get an average of 25-50Kbps download and upload, occasionally I get 170Kbps. I've called tmobile and verified that there is EDGE network support in my area(apparently also HSPDA but no HSPA+). I just installed GSM Singal Monitoring app from the play store which is also telling me I'm on EDGE network type.
I've tried every combination of APN settings I can find on the internet including cingular settings and have come up with nothing. This data transfer rates don't drop, and don't get better. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm sure it's not the phone, I can get 18Mbps at work on the wifi(running tests, downloads I've seen up to 4MB/s or 32Mbps). Also if there's anything I need to do on the phone to get internet speeds which requires root, I've already rooted the phone. The only thing I've installed since the root is CWM.
I have used both the Atrix 4G and Atrix HD on T-Mobile. The 4G does not have the radio frequencies needed for 4G / LTE data service from T-Mobile, but the HD does. In fact the HD is a perfect match for T-Mobile frequencies. You can check out the detailed specs for these phones on GSMARENA.
Sent from my MB886 using xda app-developers app
I also am on TMOUS, the best I've gotten is 5.3 Download 2.7upload on edge.
Im not sure why but I cannot use 3g.Not for a lack of trying though.(tried many apn settings, and even playing with the Dev radio settings)
I want to set the facts straight. The only T-Mobile frequencies that are compatible with the bands on our 'specific' devices are for 2G, Recently T-Mobile has refarmed their towers to support unlocked AT&T devices like ours, specifically they refarmed the towers in 'certain' areas to broadcast and receive 1900 mhz waves that our device's can use for 3G and so called "4G" If you only get 2G that's because there are no nearby towers functioning on the 1900 mhz frequencies.

I would like to add that I own an Atrix 4G on T-Mobile (in Chicago), and I get Edge, 3G AND HSPA+ signals. OP was correct in that the phone wasn't able to connect to the other bands except on 2G until about december 2012 (they expanded in order to entice iPhone users to switch providers).
But currently the MB860 (Atrix 4G) *does* work on HSPA+ (which is often called 4G, even though it is not true 4G LTE), which is still much faster than 3G.
post or send be a copy of your apn settings.I'm in Houston and they've reformed their towers here.

Alpha 850M on Metro PCS/Tmobile LTE H+ 3G YES!

I am not a Developer but am a Power User of Android for work and play using for Proposals,
Invoices, and business and casual browsing.
No computer needed.
Let me confirm that this Model Alpha 850M an octacore made for North, South, Central America and the Caribbean Factory Unlocked LTE phone works great on the Metro/Tmobile
Network on LTE and drops to 3G on Voice Calls and a little H+ when signal weak in large buildings.
Excellent voice quality, strong radio transceiver which locks well to even low signal in buildings or near transmitting towers .
Only my second Android and my first Samsung-I have not found the horrible bloatware I have read about but do have the phone customized with many features toggled off etc.
I come from an Audio background and Phones are the only Devices which do not often sound better ( earpiece, microphones, speakerphones) on a $600 Device versus a $150 DeviceTHIS Alpha surprised me- it sounds much fuller and a little louder than 3 or 4 AT&T
Alpha 801 quad cores I auditioned before.
Either a bigger speaker, better cone material, or more power or all three- the AT&T850A is
tinny and thin sounding compared to this 850M- not sure if they are all like this but an excellent speakerphone !
So often even with Experts you can NOT get a DEFINITIVE ANSWER on whether a specific Model performs FULLY on a certain Carrier as well as branded Devices this one does on TMobile also has the 700band which TMo will be using more and more for LTE which penetrates buildings better.
LTE Bands are AWS/ 700/850/1800/1900/2100/2600
To use a highly technical Term even for Developers this little Phone "Kicks Ass".
As I have said before If this phone was about 8.5 millimeters thick with a 3000Mah Battery
a higher res screen, 3 Gigs of RAM, SD Storage and the Camera from the Note 4 and a second speaker it would have been a great hit Worldwide.
This phone has less lag than S5 and excellent as is but SHOULD have been great.
Samsung tried to COPY the Iphone rather than surpass it, underestimating the Tech Savvy of
Android Users who purchase $600 plus phones.
One BIG PROBLEM is I cannot be on Internet and a Call Simultaneously on this phone.
It DROPS TO 3 G on Calls which temporarily kills Data-not sure if this is Alpha or Network BUT I always have Internet on calls with Metro PCS.
So this Alpha may not have this feature ?
If you are on a compatible GSM network (like T-Mobile you listed), it should maintain network connection even on 3G mode unless the phone drops to 2G mode. Until VoLTE is enabled (Alpha does support it but not yet enabled), all LTE phones on AT&T or T-Mobile will have to drop to HSPA mode (H+ or 3G or 2G depending on the availability) for voice calls. But as long as you are not on 2G (E or G), you should still have simultaneous voice and network connection.
However, I did encounter similar problems on my AT&T version but a reboot of the phone solved my problem.

Something interesting here: my G850A indicates "4G" during voice calls at the top of the screen, but bringing up the status indicates that it is indeed fluctuating between HSPA+ and UMTS. AT&T being misleading? The G850M fluctuates between saying 3G and H+. (And also, when the G850M is on LTE, the indicator only says "4G," but status check shows it's LTE.)
The other strange thing is that with both phones, I have them set up to make a sound when I press keys. During voice calls, the keys make no sounds. Go figure.

AT&T labels HSPA/HSPA+ as 4G and LTE as 4G LTE. T-Mobile does the similar thing. In other places, HSPA+ is called 3G and LTE is called 4G. Semantics. HSPA+ is based on UMTS.

VoLTE has to be enabled in the phone's firmware. When the time comes, AT&T will release a firmware update to enable it as it did with short list of other phones that supports VoLTE.
I see this is on Ebay right now for a good price, I assume this will work 100% on cricket wireless with LTE? Are there various model #s? On Ebay it just unlocked. I wanted to get this to use for work.
Interesting .
I am not a dev but as I recall Metro PCS was
one of the first to have VoLTE and also simultaneous Voice and Data back on 2011 or 2012 so I was used to talking on calls and always seeing 4G LTE on the phone. LG Motion 4G.
So this Alpha is my first Samsung- and my first factory unlocked phone still on Metro Tmo.
Now I see the LTE drop to 3G when I make a call but thanks to better APN Settings I almost always have voice and Internet simultaneously because the phone jumps to H or H+ and gives fast Internet on a call on H+.
I even had Youtube and a Speakerphone call a few times as silly experiment.
I also with inferior APN setting got "unable
to access Internet while on a call message"
previously so APN Settings make a big difference sometimes.
Very few problems, fast phone, good audio and sharp Camera...
Hope that Samsung has a Note 5 with removable battery and does a Compact Note kind of like super Alpha..
Not sure if Lollipop will give VoLTE to a Factory Unlocked Phone but if any Devs can achieve it for me ...good Donation .

There is a G850M and a G850F which both are international unlocked phones but cover different LTE bands. I would recommend that you check your carriers available bands (this is also depended on area), then cross check this with http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_alpha-6573.php
There are a few variants specifically for the asian market, but unless you live there you will have a difficult time in the US to get them.
When your G850M boots up, does it display any carrier branding?

All sources that i could find on net say that SM-G850M doesn't support the band 4 on WCDMA/UMTS. They may be wrong. Since you own the device you would be the best source whether band 4 is unlocked on the device or not. I mention band 4 because that is the band t-mobile uses in most markets on 3G (fake 4G) and LTE. Go into settings\more networks\mobile networks and change the preferred network connection into 3G (or it may say 4G on your phone, just stay away from LTE), verify that it is now operating on 3G (fake 4G), then go to dialer and dial *#197328640#, choose "BASIC INFORMATION' and report what you see. I own the ATT version and when i force it (using *#*#INFO#*#*) into fake 4G it reports "RRC:IDLE, BAND:5" which is WCDMA BAND 850, that is what ATT uses here (ATT uses BAND 2 here also which is WCDMA 1900) where i live for 3G (fake 4G). When i switch back to LTE and go into this hidden menu, it reports that it is connected on "LTE RRC:IDLE BAND: 17", which is what ATT uses in my area. So you may be in market that t-mobiles uses PCS band for 3G (BAND 2) and that would explain why you do not drop on EDGE. It would be a lot clearer when you report properly on which BAND you are connected. What is concerning is that you say you loose data when making calls, which makes me think that you indeed drop to EDGE while on calls, which is painfully slow and makes you think you lost data. As i said, it would be easier to understand what is going on when you provide the whole picture ...
This is what i know that t-mobile uses on 3G:
-- BAND2 and BAND4
and LTE:
-- BAND4 and BAND17 (they might be using BAND2 too in some markets)
If your phone drops to EDGE, you won't be able to do voice and data simultaneously. You need to be on 3G (UMTS minimum) to have simultaneous voice and data.
Since Alpha only has AT&T version released in US, I'd suspect you can't buy any model of Alpha that fully supports all T-Mobile's bands because of the unique mix of bands used by T-Mobile.
The models sold on ebay varies a lot but the one I purchased says Factory unlocked by also states AT&T compatible. For all intents and purposes, the one I received is actually AT&T version, indeed factory unlocked, running AT&T branded firmware. That fits me just fine because I'm on AT&T. But if you are not on AT&T, YMMV. Cricket wireless, IIRC, is now a subsidiary of AT&T.

OK, I did this: I changed the settings on my G850M to force 3G. The code(s) you said to put in didn't work for me, so I used *#0011# instead. It said two different things, depending on when I did the test. Once it said 1900 Band 2, and once it said 1700 Band 4. Then, I put it back to LTE and it said Band 4. I've attached screenshots of all three. This is T-Mobile in Portland, OR.
Also, I found one reasonably reliable Internet source that indicated the G850M does support 3G Band 4. Here's the link:
Samsung Peru's Specs on the G850M
I was also hesitant to buy the G850M for the same Band 4 reason, until I found the specs on the Samsung Peru Website. The screenshot below shows that the M indeed does have 3G Band 4.

Thanks for doing this. It is always good when things get confirmed like this. Now I can safely purchase one for wife. Where did you purchase it, if I may ask?

Glad to help. I was a still a little concerned myself until I ran this test.
I bought it on eBay from The Pwrsellers
They currently have black, white, and gold for $450. Mine was a Brand New Open Box black model, so it was another $50 less than that. So far, so good! There is no cell company boot-up screen, and the bloatware is at a refreshing minimum.
AT&T now sells brand new for $319.99 retail.
I was at att last weekend and they wanted like $600 to buy it the 850a.
I got the 850m from target online via Amazon. It does work on t mobile.

Yeah, I almost bought one from Target, too, but this less expensive one came up just at the right time. FWIW, the one I bought from The Pwrsellers came drop-shipped from Amazon as well, so that makes me think most (if not all) the companies selling the G850M in the US right now are drop-shipping through Amazon.

I bought from target for the return policy, especially since I was not sure if it was going to work on tmobile .
I just bought another one to see if the reception is any better and I will return the one with the worse reception.
Thanks for 1700 Band Test on 3G
I have found APN Settings for Metro/Tmo important for best performance on my Factory Unlocked 850M.
MetroPCS frequently uses Tmo APNs even on Metro PCS Phones.
With Factory Unlocked Phones I assume trial and error may be best for an advanced Phone like Alpha.
I tried the Settings used for Note 4 on Tmobile which worked but not as well as what I use now but open for suggestions lol.
Here are current best I have found which are fast Data and allow
Internet while on calls about 90% of the time.
I always have good voice and audio on calls.
Here's current APN Settings :

I have found that IPv4/IPv6 seems to perform a bit better than IPv4 .
But I have NO IDEA what these do in Tmobile Protocol.
Also I leave BEARER unspecified but have tried LTE also.
The only problem I sometimes have is no data on 3G and Phone does not bounce back to LTE AFTER a call- often turning data off and on with Quick Toggle restores LTE quickly.
Oddly this is an intermittent problem.
Often I have quick Internet while on a call but sometimes no Internet on a Call.
Here are the screenshots from my Alpha 850M which has no Carrier Branding when I forced 3G also some H showed and I got
1900 band in 3G but have not seen 1700 3G but in LTE in second screen.
I am in Miami area which is reframed so Metro/Tmo uses 1900 more here for 3G - Corvussimo - how did you get 1700 to show on 3G - is yours a Factory Unlocked unbranded Alpha ?
Thanks for both your help very interesting stuff.
