SO-02H Root or Flash International FTF? - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm noticing in the new Japanese Sony models that you are no longer able to flash International firmwares. Has anyone found a method to do this or even root? Bootloader is unlockable on these as far as I know unless I"m missing that method as well.

someone asked about going from INT'L to JAP, and I told them if they had the voice codecs, everything should still work - just going by the AOSP source.
Have you tried using Flashtool to see if you can flash the international model ftf?

I have. This is generally what I do with these. Currently I'm working with the SO-02H and SO-04H. Both of these fail at system.sin or any other sin for that matter. The SO-04H gets the require script error on some of the FTFs. I've done a lot of these in the past with no issues, but I'm not sure what would keep the FTF from even being flashed.

I haven't tried this myself - but if that happened to me - I would've experimented with swapping the system.sin when Flashtool finishes the prepare. Maybe some of the Google Core apps are incompatible in the new release.
See if you can find anything here http://files.setool.net/support/SETool2/

I dont think setool supports anything newer. I've actually not thought of swapping, didnt know that was an option lol.

swapping system.sin still fails

Have a look in the update.xml or boot.xml in the prepared folder and see if you can find any matching .sin, and maybe you could cook your own ftf. it's probably getting too complicated and you may as well root.
edit: I was in the middle of shredding a system.sin I mounted in to ubuntu, and that's when I said... screw it, I'll learn gooble repo and make AOSP

I would love to root. These damn things have locked bootloaders. I have created my own FTF but still same results (I'm sure I got something off).. definitely not new to the phone game, but very little experience with Sony.

Is the 'Bootloader Unlock Allowed' set 'NO' and 'OEM unlocking' greyed out in Dev options? If not - maybe could write a batch file for the cmd prompt to do a brute force
Code:
'fastboot -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xYOURawesomebatchscript'

Bootloader Unlock Allowed is set to No, but weirdly I can set OEM unlocking in Dev options (even though it seems pointless).

Flash only simlock.ta

anybody knows how to flash only simlock.ta?
Mine flash tool is 0.8.6.0 ver and it always ignore the file.
I want to flash only this file. Is there any other way?
any idea!!!! any help!!!
If you have unlocked your bootloader, you need to relock it before you can re-simlock IIRC.
Mine is locked bootloader. Now I want to flash with simlock.ta. Flash tool always skip the file. Why? Is there any other way?
But what is IIRC?
also tried with flashtool ver 0.9
But no luck!!!!
Any help???
Why are you so particular about flashing this file? Do you know what is this file and what it does?
Just don't mess around with that file.
Your question is answered by Blagus on GSM Cure,
Simlock data is checksumed, and even if you manage to edit file and write it to the phone, it probably won't boot because of checksum mismatch. So you'll have to find a way to bypass security (loader) and make the phone to accept new security zone. And if this was possible then every tool would be able to unlock it standalone (without EMMA).
And only tool that has X10 mini unlock solution is SEtool but unlock is not available for public

Sorry to ask but I just wanted to be clear on something - my Xperia (Ray) refuses to read my SIM card. In fact, it doesn't even ask me for my PIN number, it just boots as normal but I have no connection to any network. I've tried using the SIM card in another phone and it works fine, therefore the problem is with the phone itself.
I'd recently had my phone network & bootloader unlocked by wotanserver using the test point method - because of this I thought the DRM keys would be fine (e.g. TrackId & Timescape still worked). However, when I was updating from GB .42 to .62 OTA (to flash a GB ROM) my phone bricked! So, I ended up using s1tool to restore the locked bootloader. Then I used flashtool to flash a stock ICS ftf file. It seemed to work (the phone rebooted) but it was then I noticed that the SIM card wasn't being recognised. Also, in the Flashtool log I noticed that a blue line was there saying 'this file is ignored simlock.ta'.
Hard resets & updating with Sony Update Service isn't working and there's just so much conflicting info out there that I'm really confused at this stage.
Can anyone help me or is my phone screwed for good?

It's rare for any SE phone to be screwed for good... maybe try flashing a stock GB rom, and get back to how your phone was previously? Do any other SIM cards work in the phone? Check service menu (*#*#7378483#*#* from phone keypad) and check SIM or network locks to make sure nothing is wrong there? Check and clean the contacts in the SIM card slot? Unlock the bootloader again, and flash a custom ROM? Just don't try any more over-the-air updates with unlocked bootloader - this bricks many phones! Good luck!

Bricking after flash

Hello everyone, this is my first post, the one issue that made me register
Ill be as short as i can :
I have a sony xperia P t-mobile locked so:
-Bootloader locked,
-root goes up no problem, works,
-CWM goes up this one,works:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020895
-i copy the rom on the phone, factory reset all that junk, i start to flash i get the "getprop nypon" aka Status 7 error code(tried several roms, all do the same)
-i go and modify the upgrade script via this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2302599
The rom installs, i install the gapps and whatnot and when i go to reboot it goes brick, i can get it to vibrate for hard reset but thats all(luckily the xperia updater software recovers so its not bricked out atm) but thats all, no other response no sony logo no nothing.
I was trying to flash the CM11 nightly to my phone, and i dont have a clue what have gone wrong... any ideas? should i try another one? did i mess up the flashscript modifying?(i checked for space) Any input and suggestion is highly appreciated, thank you in advance!!

You can't "flash", as this feature in the BIOS, but you can do virtually anything you want with your phone once you have root permission.
Is your bootloader unlockable?

Hmmmm, have you checked in service menu?
There might be unofficial method, I don't know if it's for unlockable bootloader.
Luckily, here it's not allowed bind users to service anymore, and carriers must unlock it if the owner of the phone request it.

yep i checked the service menu thats why i know its not unlockable. i might try to get in touch with t-mobile support and ask them for an unlock code... the only ones i found on the internet, costed quite a sum of money. anyway, i wouldnt even bother with it that much, the speed is acceptable and im okay with the default sony interface, but the phone app freaking out and freezing a lot makes me a bit angry about it...

[Q] Did I get a bargain or screwed over?

I'm in the UK and we have a place call Cash Converters, it's known for selling second hand goods.
I bought myself a Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet LTE 16gb in mint condition with all the accsessories and box.
I paid just under £150.
I was running Lollipop but for me personally the device was slow. I downgraded to KitKat and it's great, fast as hell. really impressed!
I'm not rooted and I'm on the latest KitKat before the Lollipop update.
I removed all the bloatware 1 by 1 and removed the Google apps I wasn't going to use.
I'll tell you now, it's reallly fast.
well to my question; Because I'm on the latest KitKat before Lollipop - is there a way I can root my device?
PS: I don't want to spam the forum so I'll ask here - what sort of battery life are XDA Members getting with their Z2 Tablet?
Lollipop is faster than Kitkat on this device.
Must have been something else than the firmware which slowed your device down.

Well, it depends on the version of KK. If it's 4.4.2 the root process is definitely easy by running the easy root (towel root) program. After that, the towel root author got hired by Sony, so, so much for getting any simple root processes.
As with 4.4.4, you can get root, but you'll need either to use;
a) Bootloader unlocked, and a modified Boot Image Ramdisk to get full System RW
b) Install Nutz dual recovery (easier with bootloader unlocked)
With LolliPop, I already had bootloader unlocked, so I installed the latest Dual Recovery by Nutz, and installed the latest pre-rooted LolliPop build.
One note on unlocking your bootloader if you decide to go that method. Back up your DRM keys first. Then if you ever decide to go back to stock, you can reflash them. Note it only works initially with 4.4.2 Builds if I'm not mistaken. To be honest, I have them backed up, but don't really notice them missing. Supposed t maybe do something with camera or video enhancements, but I can't tell the difference.
As with speed and battery, I can't tell the difference between the 2 versions. Benchmarks are about the same. Battery life is subjective depending on how you use the tab.

You can unlock your bootloader with any version. In the forums there is an app called Flashtool if I'm not mistaken that you can use to relock the bootloader.
Read this;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2747676
Be aware it'll wipe your /Data partition so you'll need to re-install your downloaded apps. Maybe docs and photos as well.

Aha. Similar to mine. I wound up getting a Demo model (unknowingly). Had the same "no" for bootloader. I wound up flashing a different "Ftf" file using Flashtool. Put a different region Rom on it. Workedfor a couple of folks, unless you have one of the carrier brands like Verizon, ATT, Tesla, etc.
So try flashing a 4.4.2 FTF file from a different region. See if it installs an unlockable bootloader. It's worth shot.

Having issues copying the link, but go to the regular z2 forum, then the cross development forum. There is a thread for "xperiafirm". This is a Pc app that will download almost every version Ftf file for Sony devices. Find your device (511, 521, etc) and download a couple different region Ftf files.
Flash using Flashtool that I sent you a link to.

OK, so here's the scoop.
1. Don't flash any files from our forums (zip) files. They are for custom recoveries.
2. Use the experiafirm software to download specific ftf files for your device. I'm mobile now and can't paste a link. You can find the Pc app by going to the Z2 phone forum, then go to Sony cross development. There you find the ExperiaFirm Pc app. Install it to a Windows Pc (instructions are in the post). Select your device on the left (Z2 Tablet), select specific model, and you should get all available factory firmwares on the right.
3. Select a firmware to download to Pc. Pay attention to the carrier versions. You probably don't want these. By carrier, I mean phone companies like Orange, Tesla, Version, etc. These are devices that are sold by the phone providers and usually you can't unlock the bootloader.
You want just normal Ftf files, like Vk, Ru, Baltic, etc. Should be about 30 or so available for your device.

thanks for all your help but I've gave up.
the link you told me about, xperiafirm, I couldn't get the ftf files. NO matter what I done.
I messed my Z2 LTE Tablet up and it was in a boot loop.
I fixed it with PC Companion and left it at that.
I have a Sony Xperia M2 too that I couldn't unlock it's bootloader, I kept getting "failed - command not succeed" so I just give up.
I have literally done everything and I still can't do it.
all I want is to calibrate my battery on my Z2 LTE Tablet & Sony Xperia M2.
is there something else I can try?
I'm running stock on both of them (latest in the UK through Sony's PC Companion) and I've disabled all the crap Sony apps and Google apps.
they're both fast now.

Wow! Sorry experiafirm wasn't working for you. When I get time I'll install it here. It was working fine before I left Moscow. Currently on extended trip to care for elderly parents in the states. In the original post it stated a couple thing for the Pc,like recent Microsoft.net for example. Generally you just select your device on the left, then hit. "check all" in the upper right. Double click a firmware and it should download (if I remember correctly)

yeah mate I tried that and it wasn't downloading any ftf files, I kept getting "file" formats and trying to flash them after creating with flashtool was a nightmare!
but thanks for your help, I appreciate it. I think I'm done though, I have charged my device all night and most of the day and both of them are sitting on 100% full.
so I'm happy.
I also found a way to calibrate my battery on both devices without root too. so all is good.

any chance you can help me? I'm trying again.
what firmware should I flash to try and get my bootloader unlocked?????
You have to bundle the files downloaded from XperiaFirm, into an FTF, you do this with Flashtool:

You can skip the parts about Decrypting, because XperiFirm does that for you.

Cannot update Xperia Z3 Compact tablet (SGP641) to Marshmellow. Help, please.

Hello. I just received an Xperia Z3 Compact tablet (SGP641) compact tablet that I bought used. It is unlocked. I don't know if that means it is rooted, as well, as I am new to this.
Anyhow, I tried to update the tablet through the device itself, but it says it is up to date at version 5.0. So, then I try to update it using the Xperia companion on my PC. When I try, it gives me an error message that reads: "Update failed. The device contains modified software that cannot be updated. Error code: UEGetPhoneInfoRootedDevice
UE_2003"
I have no idea what this means. Does this mean that I cannot update the tablet, at all? Can I "un-root" the tablet? Basically, what are my options at this point? I would just like to update to its latest Android version. The battery life is not what I was expecting. I mean, it drains over 20% in an hour. Is that normal? I am hoping an update might help this out a bit.
Thank you in advance for any and all help, advice and suggestions. I really don't know anything about this, so I really would appreciate all the help I can get.
Thanks!
Edit:
So, it turns out that the device has been rooted and the bootloader unlocked. The seller just conveniently forgot to mentioned this during the sales process. Very frustrating. What can I do?
No the battery drain is not normal. I did not get an update either, here in The Netherlands. So I flashed a stock German version instead and changed the language afterwards. You would need Flashtool for that. The Xperia Blog has a good tutorial for Flashtool, but I guess you can also find it on xda. If you flash a stock version you will be unrooted as well.
If you wish, you can also lock the bootloader again in Flashtool.
Since your bootloader had been unlocked your DRM keys are probably lost, resulting in lower quality photos at low light conditions.

Thank you very much for your reply!
I am concerned to read that about the battery. I am beginning to really feel that I go a lemon.
Could you possibly explain more about flashing to stock, please? I am going to search and check out what you recommended, I just thought in the mean time you (or some other helpful poster) could clue me in a bit more.
Do you know if I can use the Xperia companion tool to do a software repair? It is an option within the program. I am just wondering if that will re-lock it and allow me to update.
Thank you very much, again, for your help! I really appreciate it.
I am not sure if Xperia Companion still works with an unlocked bootloader. But you can always give it a try. Flashtool is a much more powerful tool as it allows you to choose the rom you prefer, even if it is a downgrade.

Do you if there is any way to tell what, if anything, is on the device...as far as custom ROMs, rooted, unlocked boot loader...etc?
In Settings -> About you can access diagnostics with some basic info. More advanced diagnostics can be accessed if you install a phone dialer (I tried Pixelphone Dialer) and dial *#*#service#*#*. In Service Tests -> Security you can find your bootloader status. If it is locked it says Marlin [Key OK][Active] and the same for the other items. In addition you can find lots of other info there.

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond and help.
Will I mess anything up if I go ahead and flash a stock version or try to relock it if, by chance, it is not locked, rooted or anything?
Nope, but make sure you flash a correct ftf for your model. I'd advise you to wipe data, cache and apps log in Flashtool to make sure you have a fresh start. Any Marshmallow stock rom would be ok.

I can find that just by searching for the model number (SGP641), correct?
Flashtool will recognize your model as well.

I am having a rough time finding out what to do. The only thing that I can see is the Taiwanese version, which is the model the SGP641 is, but I am confused about how to do it. Can I just flash it to the file that is on Xperia blog, or do I have to downgrade it first?
Edit:

Well, as the Dutch philosopher Johan Cruyff said: every disadvantage has its advantage. It depends on what you want. If you want to stay rooted, you can flash a prerooted Marshmallow rom for your model from recovery. Usually you can enter recovery by pressing volume down or up during boot until the led changes color. Root is attractive because you can remove bloatware and install costumizations. If you do not want root you can flash a stock rom with Flashtool.
dude you want only to update marshmallow?if not,i can give u 2 options for a veeery stable and battery friendly tablet.

Welcome to the Family Xperia 5 Mark II Users <3
Thanks. Looks like it is the same procedure like 1-ii 10-ii.
I know this is obvious, but in case someone forgets, remember to unlock bootloader, you need to unlock "developer options" by tapping the "build number" 10 times in settings>about phone, turn on "OEM unlocking" in system>developer options.

Not too sure what is this step for?
Unlocking bootloader on these newer Xperia devices doesn't bring the same limitations to the camera as the old days, does it?

It clearly disables still the Display Enhancement known as Video Optimization, besides that may it mean You can't play 4K HDR anymore over Netflix, limiting it to FHD/HD Playback. Additional will You not being able to use the Xperia Services anymore which shouldn't hurt anyone. With My MARS_SOM can You get even better Display Optimizations combined with 4K HDR Playback on all possible apps. Still searching a Tester on the Xperia 5 II for it actually...
Updated the Guide
Respect for all your effort, thank you very much!
Any way to revert back after this? How to relock bootloader?
Xperia Companion won't repair since the bootloader is unlocked and Xperia Flash Tool (Emma) gives me an error (screenshot) and FlashTool doesn't support Xperia 5 II yet.

"fastboot oem lock" locks the Bootloader again. Just use the Companion to repair after that. Never use Flashtool on newer Devices (2019+), just use NewFlasher and Fastboot. That's the failsafe way...
@Kocane it isn't a DRM Bypass, so No. But it enables 4K Playback and various Pixel 4 XL and Qualcomm configs that enhance the Display on other Ways like Automated Whitebalance, variable vsync and more. The actual GitHub Versions are pretty neat actually in that view...

You should reflash the Stock Firmware with newflasher before trying again. Take a look If it boots untouched and Install the Magisk Manager again (to make sure the Firmware is ok)
Have You also did the vbmeta step? You could try to skip that step if You tried it with...
You could also try to Patch the Boot Image with Magisk 21.X. Just Go in the Magisk Manager to the Settings and select the Beta Channel. Go Back to the Main Page for patching and Patch your Image with the 21.X Beta version.
Hope that helps!

So you don't need to backup the DRM Key like the old models Z3 / Z5 to gain back the functions?
I can't figure out how to unlock this device? '
I've followed the instructions here: https://developer.sony.com/develop/...d/unlock-bootloader/how-to-unlock-bootloader/
But running: "fastboot oem unlock 0x[unlock code]" results in:
FAILED (Write to device failed (no link))
fastboot: error: Command failed
Any idea what I could be doing wrong?
5 ii dont have 4k res anyway. I think I will keep it unlocked like 10 ii. It will get downsampled anyway.

No link can be either not in fastboot (insert usb while holding vol up, have blue led) or no driver or not in Windows 10 test mode.
Also, have you enable "OEM unlocking" in options?

The code for 5 ii is the same for 1 ii or 10 ii.
As far as I remember, unlocking bootloader does not wipe the DRM key nowadays, right? Locking back the bootloader everything will become brand-new?
