I Broke Notifications? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using the BNTV450/Nook Tablet 7" (https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-7), but I would imagine that this would apply to all Nook devices (such as the Samsung Galaxy Nooks).
About a week ago, I followed the instructions in this article to uninstall some Nook bloatware for the current user. This is what it looks like over ADB shell:
Code:
pm uninstall -k --user 0 [package name]
Anyway, I was able to remove [com.bn.nook.audio] and [com.nook.app.wwreader], but not [com.nook.app], for whatever reason.
I didn't backup the apk files, because I figured I wouldn't need them. But a few days later I noticed that notifications were broken. Notifications haven't been entirely reliable. Sometimes they're delayed, and sometimes they don't come through. But for the past several days I haven't seen certain notifications (that I used to get all the time) at all. The notification system isn't entirely broken, though - Tasker and Twilight still have there ever-constant-permanent notifications. Instagram still pushes notifications.
I somehow got Hangouts to work, by like force stopping the app multiple times and turning off and on notifications or something. But Gmail won't show any notifications, even after force stopping, turning off/on notifications, and disabling/enabling the app. Sometimes if you open the app and refresh it it'll show notifications. But push notifications aren't working like they should. Maps doesn't show those traffic reports in the notification tray.
That led me to think that it might have an issue with just Google apps. Recently I force stopped Google Services Framework because I thought it might resolve WiFi issues. (WiFi would randomly disconnect and then fail to authenticate or connect, but I know that the Internet works when that doesn't happen. Also, that didn't fix the problem anyway.) But that wouldn't make sense because Hangouts notifications were still working (most of the time, anyway), and other notifications like Duolingo's daily reminders were not coming through.
That leads me to believe that it was the ADB. That wouldn't really make sense either, because Nook apps shouldn't affect the rest of the apps. But tbh, I don't know what com.nook.app.wwreader is. Does anyone know what it does or how to fix it? I'm trying to avoid a factory reset, if at all possible.

[Q] Notifications problem (N4 / N7)

So problem is I am not getting notifications on my Android devices for a lot of apps, I seem to get notifications for Email and Calendar and SMS but that's about it, nothing for / Facebook / Skype ect.
I seem to get notifications on Hangouts now for SMS but not for a standard Hangouts message.
At first I thought it may be because I had the webpage for that app open on my PC, so shut down the pages, still no notifications?
Getting quite annoying now as its the same on my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (Both run 4.3).
A factory reset has been suggested and whilst it may fix things I would rather get to the bottom of the issue first so I know for future reference, also the N7 is pretty new and both lost notifications pretty much at the same time so perhaps a factory reset wont do anything.
Ad both devices had the same issue at the same time I wonder if its something on my account thats b0rked in some way?
Any thoughts?

[Q] Not receiving Hangouts notifications nor calls

Hey guys, about two weeks ago I was wondering why my mom hadn't called (we use Hangouts) and I thought it was weird. It was only until she called my cell phone that I realized that Hangouts wasn't working at all (even though it was open in the background).
I always used to get the call sound and the notification tray flashed saying that I was getting a video call. Same thing for messages (not SMS), even if I hadn't opened Hangouts all day at all, I would still receive SMS and video call invites. I accidentally Greenified Google Voice (since you can't Greenify Hangouts) and I thought that might be the culprit, so I degreenified it, and restarted my phone. That didn't work. I also Disabled a whole bunch of useless apks (or so I thought) with NoBloat and I'm pretty sure it was around this time that Hangouts stopped working and incidentally also any alarm app that I tried to use (I have to use stock alarm now). I re-enabled all of the disabled apks, and restarted my phone once again. This also did not work.
I have also posted on the official Google Hangouts Help forum about this issue, but I'm pretty sure they're just going to tell me that Hangouts just suddenly **** itself because I'm not on 4.4 and probably because I'm rooted. I have gone back on any changes I made that might have caused this issue. Google Voice is not greenified anymore, and I don't have ANY apks disabled at all. I even turned ChatOn back on thinking that maybe that was why.
Here is a list of things that I have already done that I have found on other forums:
Clear cache of Hangouts and Google Voice
Make sure Show Notifications is checked (it is).
I have uninstalled Hangouts updates, and reinstalled them.
I have restarted my phone numerous times.
I've shut off my laptop, tablets, and desktop so it would HAVE to go through my phone. It didn't.
"Whitelisted" Google Voice and Hangouts on any application that could possibly be closing it.
I have a SG S3 SGH-T999 T-Mobile (Unlocked) with baseband version T999UVUENC2. I don't remember how exactly I rooted my phone but I just know it's rooted. I'm on 4.3 and I have been for ages. It kind of feels like, even if I physically open Hangouts it's hard for any application to recognize that's it's running in the background, and in fact, some applications don't recognize it at all even if I just opened the application.
I don't know what's wrong, does anyone have a similar problem?
Wrong forum this is for the i9300 only, but you've broken your firmware by disabling system components. Reflash your firmware then factory reset, don't use any guides or files from this forum.

Push Notification problems SOLVED

Hi all,
On my PLK-AL10 push notifications don't work properly.
I have all the right settings applied and automatic app sync set as well.
Only if an app is open in the background I receive notifications, when apps are closed nothing.
When I deselect auto data app sync in settings/accounts/menu all apps sync and provide push notifications for just a few minutes, but after that no push again (looks to be after sleep).
Tried several push fixers from apps store (root and non-root) PNF, Push Notification Status, Push Notification Assistant and Heartbeat Fixer for GCM.
Have the heartbeat set at minimum (wifi 1 min, mobile data 2 min).
Have had this problem from the start on B150/160 and B173 stock and rooted.
Anybody with a solution for this?

I have the same problem. For example, Whatsapp messages do not arrive at all times if I did not open the program. (PLK-L01)
I have no problem with the push notifications on WhatsApp or other apps. Just to confirm I have set them as Protected Apps, and also in Power Saving I have it set to highest, which is Performance, and I have the Do Not Disturb set to Off. I do also have a smartwatch, Sony Smartwatch 3, and notifications are perfect - but then maybe Smartwatch is keeping phone alive for notifications. Battery life is still great though with all of these Settings including Bluetooth always on.

Also protected apps and power saving set at performance, even keeping Wifi alive during sleep.
It just releases the auto update
After hours of search finally found a solution.
I don't know if I missed it earlier but i installed Quick Sync Settings from the Play Store.
In the app the Google account gives several sync option.
Turning on App-data sync solved the problem.
I did not see (at least i think i didn't ) this option earlier in the Settings/accounts/Google
Now Whatsapp push notifications work with the app closed.
Hi
Unfortunately this does not fix the exact same issue for me. If the apps are not launched in background I get no lockscreen notifications. I've been in all the settings numerous times, everything is set up correctly (magazine theme, protected apps, network apps, sync otpions, power options, etc.)
This is very frustrating. Even thinking of selling the phone because of this.

It's very good to see I'm not alone with this. The App-Data sync "solution" is NOT a solution, so please do NOT label this thread SOLVED. It's not. Anyone with a working idea?

As I am the OP and it solved my problem it is solved, your problem might me entirely different, with different settings, apps, network, carrier etc.
It takes time to find the right solution for you, you can also try to uninstall your google account altogether as that takes 1 set out of the equation.

You're right. In a way... the thing is that the problem seems to be the same for all of us. And you're right that we use different settings/apps/etc so tons of things may interfere.
For me this seems to have solved the issue:
"For those who facing notification delay issue for Honor 3C/ Ascend P7 please try these:
1.) Settings> Power Saving> Protected apps> put a "tick" for the apps that you want to keep running after the screen is turned off
2.) Settings> Notification Manager> Choose "Notify" for the apps you want to receive push message to the notifications panel"
Post #6 worked for me but it's not at all stable for (facebook) Messenger app. It seems to be a lottery whether it works at all. Sometimes the sound notification works and sometimes it doesn't. For now I have to leave it running in the background visible in recent apps even though I turned Messenger on under 'Protected apps' with all auto sync settings on.

After further testing this does seem to work for my honor 7 as well but only when Power saving mode is on Performance.
If you go into Phone manager > Power Saving > Power-Intensive Apps you can see what apps are running hidden in the background.
If I put Battery performance on Smart notifications still work for Whatsapp but infrequently or not at all for other apps.
It seems one has to have extensive knowledge in the phones settings and have everything set up correctly, when it should just work off the bat. I really hope it is fixed in the next update.

Some test results sending whatsapp, messenger and skype messages from my iphone.
Settings:
Wifi: On
Auto-Sync*: Off
Whatsapp: Protected app ON & Notifications ON
Messenger: Protected app ON & Notifications ON
Skype: Protected app ON & Notifications ON (with new 'instant messages' setting enabled inside skype)
Restart phone with Smart Power Saving Mode Enabled:
Whatsapp as a protected app with sync off
Notification WORKS
Messenger NOTHING**
Skype WORKS
Restart phone in Performance Power Saving Mode:
Whatsapp WORKS
Messenger WORKS
Skype WORKS
*I like this to be off by default and in theory shouldn't be on for push notifications to work.
** Occasionally works but more often than not delayed or no messages come through. Is this the App creators fault or Honor 7 stock ROM?
Something I have just noticed on why Messenger sometimes doesn't work for me:
When I'm on the road I often enable Power Saving mode to Ultra. Whatsapp remains running in the background in this mode. Messenger is killed. Then when I exit Ultra to Smart or Performance Messenger needs to be restarted for notifications to work again. It doesn't always stay on either and have to restart the whole phone.
Skype is an odd one. It never says it's running under Power-Intensive Apps checker in the Phone Manager. Yet notifications come through
Further testing:
If I clear all recent apps by swiping bottom of screen to top , the app -protected ones will keep running silently in the background waiting for push notifications. (i can see which ones are still running in the background under Phone Manager > Battery Power Saving > Power-Intensive apps )
Now if I close the apps individually (viber, whatsapp, messenger etc) they are no longer kept running in the background despite being enabled as protected apps. So I may lock my phone, without knowing this and no push notifications will come through.
BUT if I re-open one of my protected apps the other ones will re-run in the background for push. Very strange behavior!
Gosh this push notification stuff is complicated. I'm just going to go back to my iphone 4 if this doesn't get fixed as I've come to expect this kind of stuff to just work without any fiddling!
To permanently fix this you need to root an move the apps from the Data/app to Sytem/app
They will be started as services instead of apps

How did you move them?
used Root Browser
Just move the whole app folder out of Data/App
I can corfim that moving apps you want notifications from to /system/app will work.

It didn't work for me I've already app-data on google account and even download quick syn setting solved the problem.
When I move whatsapp or messenger to system/app they don't work. Messenger crashes on launch and whasapp displays a message saying it needs to be installed again :crying:
ANyone able to confirm if they have got either working under system/app or system/priv-app

Gmail/Hangouts/Groupme/etc failing to receive push notifications

Hi all,
I'm running a custom rom on a Huawei H1611 Ascent XT with only addition modification being Magisk V12 (I've tried posting this question in it's thread, but so far no luck https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/rom-ascend-xt-nexusxt-b160-t3597766 ). The rom replaced lots of stock apps with google apps so maybe something is going on there.
Basically, gmail, hangouts, and groupme all fail to notify me of a new email or message, especially when the phone is off. As a test, if someone sends me a hangout message, I won't receive it until I open the hangouts app.
I've gone through all the notification settings, the battery optimization settings (ensure gmail, play services, hangouts all set to no battery optimize), and can't find ANYTHING to cause this issue. Also done multiple wipes and reflashes.
I feel like one time I read about a blocked wakelock causing an issue similar to this but I can't recall it. Does anyone know what could cause an issue like this and how can I figure out what is going on? Driving my crazy...
thanks!

Problems with notifications on S9+

So i own 2 businesses and its VERY important I get my Ebay app notifications, Paypal app Notifications, and Gmail notifications, as fast as possible. 24/7. No delay. No Sleep mode. No Hibernation. I want the messages to come through just like a phone call or text.
I smart switched my S8+ over to my S9+. I wanted to make sure I had the S9 + set up and settings exactly before I activated it. So I thought i had the S9+ setup and working just fine on my WIFI. So my S9+ is up and running on my Wifi.
However, I have noticed that when the S9+ screen is off for extended period of time....I DO NOT GET MY GMAIL EMAILS or my EBAY or paypal NOTIFICATIONS until I pickup the phone and turn the screen on. Its like its in some type of sleep mode, do not disturb mode, or hibernation mode even though its not set up like that. This is absolutely frustrating. I need to be able to respond to my customers instantly and as fast as possible otherwise it can cost me sales.
-Do not disturb mode is off
-I added gmail paypal and ebay to the list of apps that should be allowed to use battery all the time with no sleep
-I have notifications set as high importance in all apps and in notifications
Any help or suggestions????
I dont want to have to physically turn my phone screen on to be able to see these important notifications.
thanks
It is Android Doze at mischief. First make sure that the phone is not actively putting those apps to sleep.
Device Maintenance > Battery > Unmonitored apps / Always sleeping apps (scroll down to bottom)
Make sure that those apps are not under "Always sleeping apps." If that does not fix, put those apps to "Unmonitored apps."
Also make sure that each apps are set to receive notification in timely manner.
Open Email, go to settings. It's the gear icon at the top when you swipe from the left in the Email app.
1. Make sure Notification is checked on the first page.
2. Go to individual email accounts.
3. Check the "Sync Settings," and make sure the sync setting is set to "Auto (when received)."
Go to phone's Settings > Apps. Find each apps (eBay, PayPal, etc.) and click on them. You will see "App Info" that tells you how much mobile data, battery, storage the apps consume. Go below to find "App Settings." Click on "Notifications," and make sure that things are correctly checked.

I have done all that (except for using the basic email app) . As mentioned above. But it does not fix the issue.
I just want to use the GMAIL app for my Email. I don't want to use the phone Email app.
It does not allow you to add Gmail to the list of unmonitered battery apps I noticed too. But Ebay paypal and my other messaging apps are defiantly on there.
I don't have my Gmail synced to the stock email on my S8+ and my emails still come through with Gmail notifications instantly.
Any other suggestions???
Notification Issues.
There are definitely problems with the notification system on the S9. I've spent a couple of hours on the phone with Samsung Support and they have been unable to fix it. Hoping to get a software update that fixes it.

Yeah I spent an hour with Sprint tech support . They say it shouldn't be doing this. They have no idea why its doing it. They even did remote view to check all the settings. Let me know if you figure it out.
Should of expected this.
Anybody else?
What about msgs (SMS, MMS, IM), are they coming through timely?

Its not activated so I haven't gotten any text. Just working with it right off Wifi.
So Snapchat seemed to work
Now Ebay is working sporadically
Paypal still wont notify unless the screen is on
Gmail. sporadically too
I also was having intermediate problems with notifications. It seems once I disabled the "easy mute" option in advanced features, I'm getting notifications instantly now. Might be worth a shot to try.

This seemed super promising. Worked better yesterday.
But it is still doing it for Gmail
So strange and frustrating

Do you also have the setting in gmail to notify you for every email? Inside gmail settings, click your email, then under the notifications section click "inbox notifications" then make sure "notify for every message" is checked.

Ok, I see that but I noticed its not set up on my S8+ like that. That way I don't get bugged every 2 seconds with the promotional and social messages. Just notifies for all primary messages.
I'm also noticing some problems with notifications from my home security app, all Runtastic Pro apps and notification strip from Mi Home app. Is it Oreo related or is it a specific problem with Galaxy S9?
Received a text this morning on my Gear S3 with the default Messages app. Cleared the notification from my watch which would normally also clear the notification on the phone. Over 5 min later receive the same text on my S9+ also on the default messages app. There seems to be a fairly decent delay in the default sms app on the phone. S9+ is unlocked on Verizon. Gear S3 is Verizon version but I use it as Bluetooth/Wifi only so not connected to 4g network directly.
My S9+ is on Telus. I had to stop using the Samsung messages app a month or so after I got the phone. I stopped getting notifications. It'll buzz and light up but that's it. The icon doesn't have the notification badge (and I have it turned on in settings). I have it set to show a message preview but that doesn't show either. Facebook and Instagram notifications work about the same. It buzzes but that's it. Snapchat sometimes has the notification badge on the icon. The Samsung email app has to be set for notification of every email to show the icon badge.
---------- Post added at 04:22 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:40 AM ----------
The preview is working by turning it on and off and if my screen is on, the notification badge flickers very quickly when the message preview and edge lighting pop up....
For what its worth, if you're using a custom launcher like Nova, then you need to provide additional permissions (ex: Tesla Settings in case of Nova) for the Gmail app & other apps.
Also, you could try- 1) Reset app preferences from the app settings, 2) Remove Gmail cache & data and add your accounts again and 3) clear cache from recovery.
I had this problem, tried every solution mentioned here and elsewhere and ultimately discovered that the Data Saver settings were preventing my email app from checking for notifications. Once I exempted my email app, it began receiving notifications and the notification reminder was working fine.
Settings > Connections Data saver > Allow app while Data saver on
Every time I sat down at home to fix the issue, I'd uninstall a suspect app and notifications would work. Then I'd head out to work and they wouldn't work. Turns out the data saver only comes on away from my home wifi, naturally. This is why it was seemingly "fixed" by everything I tried at home.
