The design is great and the phone feels very solid. No problems with slipperiness so far, though I have only owned the PH-1 for a bit more than a week. I barely even notice the camera notch anymore.
The overall design of the phone is stunning. Love the look of the big screen, titanium frame and ceramic back. I've had phones I though looked nice like the 6P and 3T but the Essential Phone is on another level.
This is by far the best looking and feeling phone I've ever had. Amazing build quality and eye catching esthetics. It always gets attention when I use/show stuff... Now all Essential has to do is support it pass Oreo... To... Um... Popsicle?
This phone would be perfect with a bit bigger battery, waterproof, and no front facing camera.

I don't think I've ever used the front camera... On any phone... And 5,000MAh battery would have been perfect IMO, but I have to admit this thing is getting great battery life. But I'm in agreement!

Totally agree with you guys, I owned quite a few phones those last years and this is definitely the 1st time I’m so pleased by the look of a phone.
Really love it and this is the best looking phone ever to my knowledge if you ask me (I own the halo gray version by the way).
I just bought a Halo Grey model, and I can't say that it's all that attractive. The matte grey back and silver sides have a very industrial look to them. It's certainly not an ugly phone, but it's no looker compared to the sterling blue Moto X4 I had before this. Still, I love the huge screen, relatively small size of the phone, and the speed, so I'm keeping it. :good:
Great looking phone...and amazing battery life.
I use to feel like I had to have one of those huge samsung devices without considering anything else. This device is easily the most aesthetically pleasing device I've ever owned including the S8. I chose the halo grey and it isn't slippery or a smudge fest like the S8 or other colors of PH-1. It did take a little getting use to operating a device one handed without stress on the hands but its all worth it . I feel like putting a case on this phone is a crime punishable by lashing and then death by emojis.
The front is kind of weird when the screen is on. I feel that they should have gone with OLED with that notch. Or maybe a LCD like what LG uses in their G4-G6. The screen kind of looks cheap. The sides look nice, but the plastic trim around it is very thing and easy to scratch and crack if you're not careful. Titanium on the side is nice too, but also easy to scratch if you have the glossy ones. "Pitting" is pretty common too, which looks weird. It looks like they put a paint coating on it and it's chipping off. Matte seems to be a little better. Finger print magnet regardless. The back is kind of odd. The glossy one scratches easily, but kind of matches the whole glossiness of the phone. The Matte ones are nice, but I wish that they made the fingerprint scanner matte as well. It is shiny like the camera lens. Another thing is the scanner is not plastic like most phones, so it can crack, but it is extremely difficult to scratch, which is a nice touch. Also the back, whether it is glossy or matte, is very difficult to scratch, but it is possible. Also the notch is so small that it makes you think they would have been better without the front camera altogether.
Well the look of the grey one is superb; shiny, glossy futuristic and a bit industrial all rolled into one. The screen looks wonderful (colors, saturation is good), edge to edge screen is like no other phone I have had, they squeeze a big screen into a small space which is a good thing!
The notch looks fine, it's small, and adds to the overall image of the phone that kind of "does it's own thing". Like they weren't afraid to take risks and think outside the box a little bit. Call it "edgy" if you like
I am considering keeping this phone I just bought on ebay a week or 2 ago solely based on it's looks and the processor/ram specs. It really is pretty neat looking and kind of an original look like no other phone. I mean I know they all share design ideas but the PH-1 does stand out as being "different" if nothing else!
The sides are a bit thick for my liking, and the phone is a fingerprint magnet (especially the back). I agree with the other person that said don't cover the back with a case because the phone just looks so unique! It looks cutting edge to me..

This phone has to be one of the slickest coolest looking phone i ever owned. I can't appreciate the overall design and the feel of the device enough. But just like everyone else i dont want the phone to be damaged or have scratches. I've pretty much tried all the cases for gs2 from casemate to sgp (all of them), and yet i just can't seem to be satisfied with the look of it. So im wondering how many of you sacrifice protection for style and vice versa.
I just ripped my screen protector off and took it out of the case. Phone is too nice to have anything on it. I don't care about the scratches anymore. LOL. Just hope I don't drop it!

I had a captivate and survived with no scratches on the screen and only minimal scuffing on the underside after a year.
My biggest gripe with cases, covers, and skins is they deter from functionality in my experience. My dad got a captivate, and got an otterbox case. It made it so much harder to touch the buttons. I have never tried a screen protector on this phone, but every other phone I have had them on has been a bad experience. They Peel, bubble, scratch, fog, etc. Plus they made the screen less responsive.
I know that's risky, but I am vigilent with my phone. It only goes in an empty pocket, always screen side in. I never leave it somewhere my young kids can reach. I take this risk because I feel the screen responsiveness is worth it. The lightness and thinness of the phone are things I really like about it.
The one case I have began to consider is the aluminum ring type reviewed in the accessories section. It doesn't make the phone thicker, not much heavier, doesn't protrude in a way that may block the buttons, and is available in colors I like. However, its expensive IMO.

I whole heartedly agree with you as I'm the exact same way! One thing I love about the design of this device is that when placed in you're pocket upside down with screen side in you can easily get a good grasp on it but grabbing the hump on the bottom of the phone. My inspire felt like a sheet of ice compared to this!

So... I thought that the surrounding silver bezel was metal.... looks like it, feels like it, but I have made a discovery. Around the s pen area some of the metal began to scratch (not on the s pen, on the phone itself) and it seems like white plastic under there! If this is true I am extremely disappointed. I know almost all of the phone is plastic, and it feels solid, I feel as though the bezel being plastic makes this "premium" phone cheap. Hopefully they will use real metal in the Note II.

I had the international note before this one and the paint on the bezel wore of from using a gel case that I bought from the att store. Kind of sucks.

The last time (and only time, to my knowledge) that Samsung used metal on their phones was the Captivate. And if it were metal it would feel cold. It is well known that Samsung uses plastic construction, and HTC/apple users scoff at it, but I don't mind one bit. My Note and Infuse, as well as my captivate, all have rock solid build quality...no creaking, cheap feeling plastic. It fooled you, haha, that should say enough about how well Samsung builds using plastic. Plus, if you drop your phone, plastic will absorb more energy than metal would, saving the internals and screen of your phone more effectively. Not to mention, plastic is less dense and massive, therefore it will have less momentum when it hits the ground, further increasing the durability.
Different definitions of build quality for different people I guess. Haha.
Also, whenever anybody scoffs at Samsung using plastic, I scoff at their screens. Nothing compares to Super AMOLED. And the screen is what really makes the phone IMHO.

I agree that it feels solid, and I was originally put off by the plastic construction. However, I decided to pre order it anyway. Never even held a Note or gs2 in my life. When I got it, I noticed the build quality was very nice. I never had the creaking of the battery cover like some other users. I intend to only use Samsung phones as my daily drivers from now on (if they continue their Note like)
I hope they figure out a way to keep the paint on better next time. That is what this was really about. I have a speck candy shell on my phone (which is tearing at the s pen area) and any bear part of the phone's bezel has paint wearing off.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, I guess I don't mind scuffs on the body of my phones really. My infuse and captivate both got handed down to my parents, so its not like I am trying to keep it perfect for resale or trade. I also use my phones naked about 95% of the time, only put a case on when I'm drinking or doing something heavy duty, so by the time they get to my parents, the paint is a bit worn from jeans pockets, but the device is still rock solid and they're happy. Haha. I also don't usually use screen protectors either ever since I started using swype, as nothing compares to the actual glass for that. Though I've had great luck with gorilla glass, no major scratches on any of my 3 samsungs, I just sprung for the glas.t for my note.
And Samsung better friggen continue the note line...I can never go back to a smaller screen. Haha

Only 3 stars from me for the way it stays in hand. Curved edges both sides make the phones edges sharp hence difficult to get a proper grip. Also double sided glass makes it slippery.
Wish the back of the device was as round as the edges on the front. Similar to the normal S7. That's a joy to have in your hands.
This phone just fits perfectly in your palm. The curved back makes a world of difference. However, it is slippery. I would love to keep this device naked, but it just doesn't seem like the best idea. Because of its glass back, it also is a fingerprint magnet.

Feels pretty good, but I feel the S7 is better. S7E is kinda difficult to hold comfortably cause you don't want to touch the edge screen. Only reason I'm sticking with the edge is the battery.

Coming down from the Note 4 to the S7 Edge, the size here is a huge improvement in terms of ergonomics. You need giant hands to comfortably palm a Note. This feels just right. It rests on my palm and my fingers don't have to strain to secure the device. The glass does feel slippery but it's a beautiful piece of hardware. I was sure I wanted to go back to a regular 5.1" Galaxy S7 but the feel of this device won me over.

Ergonomics are bad. Its impossible to properly operate with one hand without touching the edge. Bad design; form over function. When holding it in landscape mode, your right thumb becomes useless because youll hit the multitask button with your palm before touching the left side of the screen.
Btw my hands are large, but skinny.
I'm not overly impressed on this front. I've had mine for a little over a week and I'm already getting used to it though, soon I'm sure I won't notice it at all. It is VERY slippery though.
Not a huge case guy
I don't like using cases and after trying out my girlfriends S7 Edge without a case for a couple hours its way to slippery compared to my Nexus 6P. Anybody use it without a case and have luck? I haven't dropped a phone in 2 years and feel I would with this phone lol.
It's just a hair too wide. Had to return the first case I got as the covers for the buttons made it too wide, and go with the Samsung slim protective cover. Even still, it's just a fraction too wide for my hands, tho I'm getting a bit used to it - I'm still getting the wrong inputs sometimes trying to swype/type one-handed.
Most expensive-feeling smartphone I've ever held (incl. iPhones), and the ergonomics are pretty good, but it doesn't feel perfect. I guess it comes down to the size of your hands, but I have rather big palms, so it could've been a little more rounded on the back. Still, it feels comfortable to hold it, and I don't really have any complaints.
I love the on-hand feel. I have smallish to medium hands...and could quite easily use it one handed...BUT the edge palm rejection just isn't sufficient. I and forever making accidental touches. It almost seems like those light edge touches confuse the phone...and random links/apps get selected in the general area.
Coming from a 6P, this is far easier to use...but contemplating the s7 rather than the edge.

I always use cases on my phones and on 6p, the Spigen Neo Hybrid made the phone huge, on S7 Edge it's perfect. When I had my LG G3, I felt that a 5.5 inch screen it's the best and I feel that again. Even S6 Edge+ seemed a little too big. And the edges help the phone to appear slimmer in hand.

Naked s7 edge feels good in hand. But in led case_ awful. That's why I took it out from it. I enjoy phone more this way.
Now the Edge has curves in all the right places lol great in hand feel (Would of liked more pronounced curves) but it's by far better than the S6 Edge....overall I'm not Complaining

Since the screen is so big and tall, hows the one handed used? (Not the software one handed mode). I rarely used the one handed software on my note 3 because it just felt weird. But I'm curious how easy it is to handle the phone in one handed. Personally I would have preferred this phone to have like a 5.2inch screen but that's just me.
Well, I personally can't operate the phone with one hand. It's too big for me. Its a little bit problematic, but the screen and phone overall is worth it.
Had to get a case for it. Picking it up from a flat surface without a case is not very comfortable, its just to slippery and I know it wouldn't be long before the dreaded drop to the floor.
There isn't enough to hold on to when lifting it off of a flat surface, which for me makes it a lot more difficult than picking up pretty much any flat screen phone.
Took a bit getting use to the edge screen without getting false touches from hitting the edge of the screen, but the case pretty much solved that also.
So over all I'd say in hand feel without a case is poor enough that I would of passed on this phone, but with a case, almost as good as any of my previous flat screen phones.
It's just bad, the Edges don't provide functionality that would justify this bad handling.

I never use cases, as I find them all to be eyesores, but I was curious about this one due to it's minimal nature. I've been using it for 2 days, and it's actually not that bad. It's actually not a hard plastic. It's more like a rubber-type material. It's also not the most esthetically pleasing thing I've ever seen, but unless you look at it from the back it's barely noticeable. I'm not sure it provides much protection against a drop, but it prevents the phone from sliding on a slippery surface. As a bonus, as was previously observed it does serve as a nice guide for the fingerprint reader. Overall, I'd say I'm satisfied with it.

Only complaint about build quality and aesthetics is that the Aura Glow back is such a fingerprint magnet. Like nothing I've been seen.
Here's my question: if Whitestone Dome can make a screen protector that collects virtually zero fingerprints, why can't Samsung use the same coating for their back glass?
Samsung is brand which makes great build quality phones with top notch materials (Eg: Display) which you can find in the market.
My aura white is premium build. Nice weight to it but does get tiring at times but something I can live with.
Feels much more premium than galaxy s models.
As for the finger prints, hardly any on the white but as for whitestone why cant they make a back glass cover?

Agreed! I was just thinking about how great the phone feels while resting on your pinky. Sounds super weird to say but the weight distribution is so we'll balanced and the flat bottom of the phone so smooth that I don't get the kind of pinky irritation and/or numbness I would get with other phones. I remember the iPhone XS Max being so heavy on my pinky it would cause discomfort after a while. I know this is the epitome of first world problems and even feels weird to say but I never heard any reviewer mentioning this tidbit.

Completely agree, quality build is really good. I just noticed how precise the side buttons are, for example the "click" on volume buttons feels really good.
This is a major point versus Huawei and other chinese brand devices that definitely feel like toys in comparison.
The phone is well balanced and very thin even a good case on it. Owing to it's a pretty much nonexistent bezel it spends 24x7 in a it's Bolt case.
With the right case it's pretty much a what the active phones should have been plus it can molt its skin if it's damaged.
It's pulled some descent G's in falls in the case and is none the worse for the tumbles.
In the case accidental touches just aren't an issue while still having full screen access. In the right case it has an open feel about it while still being well protected.
Using it without a case though is downright scary as it's a slippery bugger.
Water/dust sealing and buttons seem top notch.
The curve screen is perfect for One Handed Operation+ and now I'm wondering how I lived the savage life without it.
Plus it adds to the screen and overall phone strength in spite of what some think. No detectable frame flex.
A high performance laptop in my hand... too cool.
Build Q is excellent. This heavily used N10+ looks and feels identical to my new one.
Switches, jack, seams are all still tight as the new one. It's held up extremely well. No detectable display degradation of any kind. Only repair has been a replacement battery.
