Should I flash a ROM? or just root?

Hey guys. I just got my unlocked S2. After looking around I like the default apps and stuff. Kies Air is awesome too. If I flash do I lose those apps? Am an experienced user. And think yeah but dunno. Worth flashing a ROM? stock stuff is nice.

I have been thinking the same to!
Hello there. It depends on what you are flashing. There are two kinds of roms, those based on official sammy roms and ASOP roms (like cyanogen) which are clean and built from scratch. If you don't want to lose the other apps I recommend you flash a rom based on official sammy roms or just root because usually ASOP roms don't contain much and they can't use any sammy based programs/apks.

Well for some reason with this phone I like Samsung apps. So no ASOP this time. Weird. Well what are some good Samsung custom ROMs?

Yeah, I like them too. You could try:
Lite'ning Rom
Exynos Extreme
Criskelo Rom
I've tried these and they're good. Samsung goodness but faster and snappier. Enjoy flashing.
Basics are you root if you need root it does not make your phone go faster .
Custom roms may or may not wipe apps its all in the description of each rom .
Little performance difference between custom and stock rom .
jje
Root- It's a must imo.
A Custom ROM- Depends on how mad you are about them. I am not.
I agree just root with cfroot if you like the stock apps etc.
Personally I think KI8 is worth a look.

Stock Debloat?

Is there a DNA Stock Debloated ROM? I'm looking around and just don't see it. Probably right under my nose.
Even better, a stock, debloated, desensed ROM?
Before anyone suggests anything else, I'm affected by the custom ROM SMS issue Verizon is pushing on us. So, a custom ROM won't work.
Thanks!
Micromod has a stock debloated KK ROM, its on the 2ndnpage of the development forum.
As far as deSensed, try the GPE ROM by santod. The only truly deSensed is CM or AOSP ROMs, the GPE ROM is sense based but doesn't look like sense.

Forgive my ignorance. Just manually remove things with the file manager? Or is there something more?
I've been using Titanium to back things up, freeze them, then remove them if they don't appear to cause a problem. Is there a simpler, or better way?

Thanks, Choo. I'll check out the Stock Debloat. I started removing things and pissed off my phone.
I'm extremely apprehensive of trying anything other than stock because of my plethora of issues when I first picked up the DNA (the SMS problem).

Has anyone tried GravityBox on a Sony ZU with GPe ROM?

Xposed module GravityBox is only supposed to work on stock ROMs but will it work on a Sony ZU with the GPe ROM? Not sure if this would be considered a stock ROM. Anyone tried it?

Yes it works fine.

Everything should work great now, C3C706 just made a small update to GB, fixing compatability with the 6806. I use the 6806 and a tmo s4 running Dan's gpe rom, no issues with either phone.
It also works fine on the stock ROM. The reason why it says it supports clean AOSP is because the module is developed for clean AOSP and not directly for OEM builds. That doesn't mean it won't work though, but you have no guarantee that there won't be any issues down the road.l, and some features won't work at all. It won't brick anything though.
The module fully supports the GPe ROM though.

Stock 5.1.1

I've been looking but can't seem to find a stock LG ROM with Lollipop 5.1.0 or 5.1.1. Is there one and I've missed it? All of the other custom ROMs seem to update to that.

Newbie Questions about Custom ROMs

I've been interested in trying out custom ROMs for a while now but have a few questions I haven't been able to find answers to.
If I try custom ROMs and dislike them, can I go back to stock pie (the way it is now, with everything working) if I don't like custom ROMs?
I've read stuff mentioning that pie ROMs can be unstable if I update to stock pie. I'm already running stock pie, so is my hope for pie ROMs gone?
Is it possible to try pie and q ROMs without running into stability issues? (blobs and stuff)
I'm running a VS996 and have heard stuff about Verizon switching to VoLTE only. Will custom ROMs work at all or am I out of luck?
Many thanks to all,
This should answer your questions

Verizon has postponed switching to VoLTE only for phone calls for another year. End of 2020. When that happens, if the devs have not yet figured out VoLTE, you will have to go back to rooted stock firmware and run Magisk and Xposed mods instead for the improvements you want. I already do that. But I stayed on Oreo on purpose.

If you don't like custom ROMs you can go back to stock Pie, but I would recommend rooted stock Pie or even Oreo and you can still have Magisk and Xposed mods to for features and improvements.

No, you merely downgrade to most recent Oreo firmware to run LOS-16 (Pie) ROMs.
(You have to temporarily downgrade to very early Oreo anyway to unlock bootloader and install TWRP.)
However, since you are on stock Pie right now, if you downgrade to most recent Oreo to run the LOS-16 Pie ROMs you will need to run permissive kernel for stuff to work right.
