Quad DAC no longer activates - LG G6 Guides, News, & Discussion

well, this is a new development.
1. headphones that used to trigger the Quad DAC automatically upon insertion now are not recognized as high impedance cans. we're talking less than a week ago ...
2. the Quad DAC has to be manually activated now -- but regardless of the impedance of the headphones, the G6 still identifies it as "normal".
reading up on this a bit, i learned that the V20 had a similar issue affecting some users, where only 1 out of 10 times does the Quad DAC activate and properly identify headphones.
anyone with this issue? and any solution?

Can you tell the difference without looking on your phone? Just wondering.

there was definitely a difference in sound with one pair of headphones, now everything is "normal" -- and no change

oh you know what? i uninstalled the LG music player via adb -- i betcha that's what's causing this issue. could that even if you don't use it (i use Google Music mostly, hence the uninstall), the G6 still needs that app to detect high impedance headphones.

mine never activated from the start while every other g6 that i've compared it to using the same headphones had no issue so i'm in the process of getting a DOA replacement

so i couldn't find the apk for LG Music and so, wanting the Quad DAC (back), i did a factory reset and ... Quad DAC still doesn't activate, and identifies headphones as "normal".
it was working before ... any ideas?

Download your KDZ firmware and re-install your phone with LGUP. That will bring back the Quad-DAC

thx. worth a shot. possible to use LGUP without Uppercut? Kaspersky identifies Uppercut as malicious and deletes ... and i can't for the life of me find the DLL for the H870DS? don't suppose anyone has a link to the DLL?

If you on stock you don't need to use LG UP. Use instead of it the repair option of LG Bridge.

server error using Bridge.
using the LGUP/Uppercut method with A/V off, updating now ...

well, this isn't good.
phone shows 72% complete. but LGUP is giving me an error at 60%:
Error: 0x2BC, Invalid command response code = 0x80000202
could be a bad download, i'm re-dl'ding the KDZ ... fingers crossed

wow.
okay, so i downloaded a new KDZ, ran it in LGUP with no problems this time. (note: do NOT download from LG-firmwares.com -- that is, unless you have a download manager. produced download errors. instead, i grabbed the KDZ from @Montechristo's post here.) phone rebooted twice, and two things happened:
1. phone is in the EXACT same state in which i left it before "updating" in LGUP. i remember i had a few apps running, including YouTube, Chrome, and the HiFi DAC settings. they were all still in the recent apps list. so firmware update changed nothing, dropped me right back to the home screen the way i left it.
2. QuadDAC still doesn't recognize my headphones!
so here's what i think, with no way to prove it until i get some high-end cans: i think the 10e update for the 870DS changed the impedance trigger level. my cans are only 65ohm, which used to be recognized as "high impedance" by the device (even though in practical terms 65ohm would barely qualify as "high") in the previous firmware. so maybe 10e changed the range from 50ohm minimum to 100ohm?

Auto activate?
Can someone help me. Does the quad DAC activate automatically? When I connect my bowers and Wilkins headphones I have to manually switch it. am I doing something wrong. One of the main reasons buying this was for this spec, feature.
Thanks

what headphone do you use?

late update/follow-up
so i believe was correct: the firmware that came installed on my phone out of the box had a lower tolerance impedance level, so those with "mid-range" impedance triggered the HiFi Quad DAC. subsequent firmware updates increased this level. had the chance to try several high-impedance cans, and HiFi was triggered automatically each time. went back to my old headphones, no action.
so: my Quad DAC is not broken. just that my headphones weren't cutting it, haha

Bluetooth Remote Control for Android Media Player, etc

I'm looking for a Bluetooth remote to use in my car, to control my G1 when it's hooked up as a music player. This is both a safety and convenience concern.
The starting point is finding a remote control that transmits Bluetooth directly to the G1 (i.e., not infrared or wired). It needs, at a minimum, a forward and a stop button. Reverse, pause, and other functions are nice, but not mandatory.
The other half of the solution is software to control the media program in Android, which may or may not already exist; if not, I'll commission someone to write it. Maybe I can even offer a turnkey system for sale if there's enough interest.
I know someone's will say "search the forums", and I did. What I found seemed to be focus on wired remotes for another HTC phone, or remote controlling your PC with your phone. But if I missed a relevant post, please do correct me.
Ideas are greatly appreciated.
remote
there is a remote for gaming used for the n95 i saw on a website it worked for android on a basic level. maybe that might help. in the development of this
Found this on another thread http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87Wc0KqnW2M that some people are using. Jabra BT3030
Aux cable from car stereo plugged into remote. Remote paired with phone. Not *completely wireless* but atleast you don't have to look at your phone.
Does that get you anywhere?

Hmm, I posted a reply to this, but it isn't showing up. Maybe forgot to submit.
Anyway, thanks for pointing this out. I had seen this a long time ago and forgot all about it. That's exactly the kind of thing I want. Here's the instruction manual, for anyone else who might be interested. It's about US$55.
The only problem I see here is that it'll register as a headset and thereby disable the sound coming out of the extUSB connector in the car.

It's the Zeemote JS1, and this blog has a video showing it interacting with a G1. This may ultimately be what I'd have to go with... it seems to be designed solely as a controller, without A2DP getting in the way. But looks like it needs some kind of interfacing software, at least on the Nokia. At US$20, I should just get one and play around with it. Cheaper than buying another car stereo with BT built in.
Dual Infrared + Bluetooth Remotes
FWIW, I ran across two rare, interesting items.
One is the RicaVision Vave 100 Universal Remote. Unfortunately, it's $349... but in theory, it would control both your car stereo (via infrared, which the majority of remotes use) and the G1 (via Bluetooth). It's able to "learn" commands from 24 infrared devices, and has a 2.4" 240x320 color LCD screen. No PC or internet connection is needed for configuration.
The screenshots show artist/track info being received from Windows, so it's Media PC-oriented, but still a possibility -- assuming you could program it accordingly. If so, just carry it back and forth between home and car: use it inside for your TV and PC, outside for the car stereo and G1.
The other device is the Ricavision SideShow Remote for the same price, also having IR + BT transmitters. This is purpose-built for Windows SideShow, and has fewer buttons -- volume, play/pause, prev/next, etc. It's smaller than the Vave, but still has a 2.5" QVGA screen. This is perfect for my car setup, but there doesn't seem to be a learning mode or any way to program, so the chances of it working are about zero. Boo!

If that worked in my case it'd be perfect, and it's the smallest form factor yet. The only problem I foresee with this and the Jabra is that they'll want to subvert my wired headphone output over to A2DP. But for $13 I'll probably take a chance.

Yeah, buying directly from mainland China, you never know what you'll get -- and if it doesn't work, it's usually pointless return it. But I've bought stuff from DealExtreme before, and dirt cheap, too. Back when I had this flashlight habit....

Well, I finally bought a Jabra from there. I'll play with it and report back on whether it'll work like I wanted above.
Meanwhile, I didn't realize until looking more closely that most of them were fake. I've been burned by counterfeits before, and sure enough, there are a ton of them on fleaBay. I made this graphic to demonstrate:
Aside from the logos, they look identical. Price is an obvious warning, but not always. Location is another: I'm wary of shipping from Hong Kong. OTOH, just because it says Jabra doesn't mean it's real... the Motorola H700 is another example where it's nearly impossible to tell them apart online.
Unfortunately, even with VeRO and the rules against keyword spamming, this junk can be found all over eBay.

In theory, if it's able to connect to one phone's A2DP, it should connect to any. But I wonder if it has something to do with the ROM you're running?
I've noticed the G1 needs some finesse when connecting and pairing BT. Also, there are different steps you can take that all arrive at the same result (ergo, lots of trial and error).
Anyway. Now that I have the Jabra, my next problem is keeping A2DP, HSP and AVRCP separate... more on that soon.

Here is whats interesting; I have tried the BT3030 with several ROMS and I get the same results (I even tried it on stock and then rooted). When paired placing and receiving calls work fine. The problem arises when you try to listen to music, the sound skips constantly and I haven't figured a way to fix this permanently. Do you experience this problem (skipping sound)?

It's strange that it works with one phone and not another. But if it really is a counterfeit, all bets are off -- you may never figure it out.

I got 3 knockoff bt3030s back in october (from dinodirect... shady) at $15/ea it was an ok price...
I too have the skipping problems on my Droid, but I just discovered how to fix them. Go into bluetooth settings, long-press the jabra bt3030 device, select options, and deselect phone audio and reconnect the device. Now, no more skips.
I don't know if it's the bt3030's fault, I think it might be an android bug where audio gets routed over phone audio instead of a2dp. This is evidenced by the skipping audio--headset audio only has something like 8khz of bandwidth.
It kind of sucks that phone audio has to be disabled, but in all seriousness, I use the bt3030 for a2dp far more than phone calls, if I need to make a phone call over the bt3030, I'll reconnect the phone audio and disconnect it when I'm done.
Don't know if anyone still cares, but for the record, and for searchers, there are these options:

http://www.scosche.com/products/sfID1/217/sfID2/219/productID/1938
Both of these are very expensive though as they are part of large packages for cars. YMMV.

[Q] Bug in audio drivers? (FW 12070)

Hello,
I found that there is a bug in the audio drivers. At least, I suspect it to be in the audio drivers. I'm on Firmware 1600.2487.8107.12070 and OS 7.10.8107.79
When I'm listening to music and texting (it hasn't happened when doing something else) the phone sometimes completely locks up. Music playback stops, and the only thing I can do, is restarting it. Then, sometimes text messages get lost... This is frustrating as it happens more and more. It doesn't happen when I'm not listening to music, so I suspect it to be a audio driver problem, because I'm texting all day long.
Someone else who experiences this?
MadMatt
I have experienced this once. But I don't remember if I was sending messeage, or something else, but it happen while playing music (It was frozen - lcd was displaying same thing, and only soft reset helped)
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've been getting this problem for the past few days. It happens to me when I'm listening to music while texting, reading PDF files, browsing the internet, etc. Basically when I'm listening to music while in another program.

Those are all heavy tasks. This might indicate an out of memory problem. NOKIA, are you listening? I hope this will be fixed soon, as it's very annoying.
It seems like a lot of new roms with the new 12120 firmware have hit the nokia firmware repositories. No official release notes are available at the moment but I think it is a save bet that the audio bug has been fixed since there is a lot to find about this bug at the official Nokia community forum. It will (based on the version number, 8773) also contain windows phone tango (Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh) and bring support for Internet Sharing (strong remour).
If you can't wait you could always try the new firmware by downloading with Navifirm+ and then flash it with Nokia Care Suite. There is a lot of info about this subject at this forum, not hard to find. Please not that you will loose all info on your phone (except from what is stored in the cloud such as your contact list) because your phone is erased. If you don't want this, please wait for the update to be rolled out through Zune, that way you will keep all data.
Based on history, the Zune update will start to roll out in a week or two. Zune updates are processed in stages, phones belonging to the latest stage will (again based on history) receive the zune update in a month or two.
Good luck.

Where do you see those ROMs for the Lumia 800? Latest Firmware I can see on NaviFirm+ is 12070 :-(
I've had twice that my phone hanged while making a call. But my phone didn't have any heavy task to do or play any music.
In both cases the phone had been on for several days without use (in flight mode, it's my second phone besides a Galaxy Note) and it was the first call after deactivating flight mode. The phone freezes at the moment of connecting and only rebooting by pressing the on/off button for a very long time solves the problem.

My bad, I see that firmware is actually for the Lumia 800C (RM-802), which is the Chinese version. Yesterday there were only 2 versions of 12120 available for the Lumia 710 (RM-80) and now there are 7 more though. So I think it will hit the Lumia 800 (RM-801) very soon.
I can confirm not just that but that there are also performance bugs in the audio driver. The 710 is capable of 10ms less audio latency than the 800. (30 ms vs 40 ms) tested with silverlight audio Apis on 16 bit 44.1 mono wav files.
Which is quite weird, I have not tested this on the previous firmware version, just on the latest. So they screwed up something. You would expect them both to perform equal, a difference of 10ms is just a lot...
Its by no way a scientific conclusion, its just a conclusion from practical use (testing low latency audio app).

It is however weird indeed. They really messed up the audio drivers... We have the volume bug and the phone completely freezing... What's next?
Anyone tried playing music with headphones, ringer on, and someone calls you?
The playback volume of your ringtone will jump a notch for 2 secs before it returned back to your normal volume.
Be careful when you try this! Dun damage your ears.

Yes, this is another bug in the audio. There are (at least) two bugs in there.
I had another weird bug today.
Was playing music with headset on, and navigating with the gMap Pro. As you can imagine, the phone gets a bit hot with all that processing. Just then I decided to make a call and unplug the ear phones.
I managed to make the call but the ear piece is very soft despite volume at max 10. So thinking its a call issue, I ended the call and retried. Same problem. Rebooted the phone this time and tried. No go...
After like 20mins, I tried again and this time it works loud and clear. I'm thinking if the speaker somehow couldn't output in correct volume when it's hot?

Yeah indeed.
I thought I was the only one, but my IE9 keeps crashing constantly and the Phone freezes up a lot. The 710 does not do this (as far as I could test it)…
Nor did the Omnia7 ever do this.
The video drivers are bad (stuttery video) and now I could measure the audio performance (and having 25% more latency), touch screen jittering etc. I really wonder why they messed up on the 800 but did fine on the 710. The 800 is the flagship in Europe why is it not being prioritized?
Anyway there are enough rumours of a new update coming up so hopefully that one will not just deal with the camera but also update the video, audio and radio drivers (to reduce rapid battery drains on bad 3G signal).
Its an amazingly nice device, sadly has quite some bugs its like we are the beta testers for the 900 actually .
Same thing here. Lumia 800 locks up while playing music in Zune. Doesn't happen often but still annoying. I think Microsoft beleives this happens only on HTC devices according to their forums but it doesn't.

Headphone was not working now both headphone and speaker work at the same time...help

Oh boy, it has not been the smoothest ride so far with my first Sony phone but I still love it.
So, I am running the OTA 257 rom (shows as model 6806 though in about Phone but my phone is C6802) after I changed to 532 (6806 version) to root.
I just tried the headphone jack and it was not doing anything. Tried another headphone and same thing.
Restarted and now it works BUT the speaker also plays sound. I cannot find a way to stop that. Or sometimes the headphone wont work...frustrating. :/
Maybe related to it showing 6806 rom?

Have you exposed the minijack to water? It sounds like a software issue since it worked after a reboot, so you got a lot of different ways to test this, but the question is: Are you willing to potentially spend a fair bit of time on it? (re-flashing, resetting etc.)
no water at all, just got the phone. Yeah it did work both at the same time when I tried app sound force or something like that to control where the sounds goes so at least is not dead.
I am more than willing to flash etc. I will be doing other ROMS today to test likely anyway.
Okay. Keep me updated!

Nougat Bluetooth Quality Issues

Hi
Since updating to Nougat the quality of the bluetooth audio is terrible, it seems to fluctuate between all the time and can get very crackly and hissy.
Is anyone else experiencing anything like this - I updated using LG Bridge.

Don't what could be the problem, using the stock app with a Bluetooth Speaker in my case works the same as with marshmallow
I've emailed LG and got the attached reply - he mentions that there are problems with Android 7, but I think this might be a generic answer to blame android instead of themselves.

Hi,
I also have problems with my Bluetooth (headset Bluejay X2) after the Nougat upgrade. Media works 2-5 minutes, then audio just stops... the device looks connected and the media player continues to play (silently then). I have done all trouble shooting tips I've found and eventually I also did a factory reset, still same problem. I also have an android wear connected (Sony Smartwatch 3)... actually, I will test to disconnect the phone and see if the audio works better then.
Thanks for contacting LG. I will try to do the same; I sincerely hope they will send out a fix soon, as there to my knowledge is no way to (easily) roll back to Marshmallow.

A short update; problem persists. I have tried to clear system cache and now also forced the bluetooth apps to stop. Here I come to a question...
When wanting to clear Bluetooth app, I discover that I have two different apps called "Bluetooth", only difference is that one has version 5.30.18 and one has version 7.0. Should it be like this? If not, is it possible to disable one of them?

Yes, I have both of these too and no problems. I use Bluetooth with wireless headphones from Bragi.

Ok, thanks... bummer, thought it might had to do something with the problem. It might have to do with the model of headphones (still a Nougat problem though), but I don't know; don't seem to have the same problem in the car, but I do not use BT audio very much there.
One thing I have noticed on my Jaybird X2's is: when this happens and I trigger "Ok Google" (long pressing the talk button), the audio starts working again (after I cancel the "Ok Google"). So... still confused, but on a higher level

Before you do that try to factory reset. Yeah you can rollback easily, use LGup with kdz. User autoprime has thread for that. Look for it in these forms.

I wanted to say I have this same problem. My phone is not rooted. I tried factory reset and wiping the cache. I tried using equalizers but they only work for music player apps and even with bass on max it just sounds distorted. The update that caused this for several people was the latest security update. If anyone has found a way to fix this in non rooted phones I would be eternally grateful, because I drive long hours everyday and my phone was what made the trips enjoyable, without bass my speakers sound like I have a cell phone on full volume in my car. :crying:
I too was disappointed with the audio after 7.0 update. Especially the lack of EQ settings normally accessed in sound settings or Google Music. I installed MusicFX.apk from the below link - this made the EQ accessible. As a result sound is great and better than before the update. I also have DAC fix.
