WiFi drain on battery - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've read all the posts about battery drain on this and other forums. I had an S6 so I'm familiar with the battery on that device. I picked up a brand new in the box S6 Edge for a good price. I set it up including updating to Nougat. I bought this mainly as a backup phone and also for the excellent camera. Gsam is reporting Wifi Active as 56% which is probably accounting for most of the drain. No app is drawing more than about .01%. I current am using the 5 GHz band on my router. Would 2.4 make a difference? Gsam shows Averages per Complete Charge: Battery Life: 15h, 31m and Screen On: 3h 25m. Last night I removed it from the charger at 10 p.m. (100%). This morning at 8 it was at 92% so that's a little less than 1% per hour. I can use this particular phone with Wifi off, but was just curious as to whether you guys think this is normal for this phone or if I got a bad deal. I noticed some people in the older threads were getting good battery life so maybe I just got a bad one. I remember having to charge my old S6 at least twice a day so I guess this will be the same as the batteries are almost the same size.

ATT version of SG2 sucks your battery?! *Fixed*

Update and FIX!
My phone is no longer draining massive amount of batt life when idle (3-5% after 7 hours of idle), android system usage is now down to 5-15% instead of 78-97% from before.
My fixes.
1. Turn off data syncing
2. Turn off wifi while on the road (so wifi doesn't constantly look for signals).
3. Clear memory
Yes, att installs a lot of bloatware that constantly update for changes.
If killing those services AND disabling data syncing doesn't help your problem, then you have a kernel problem (like myself).
If this is the case, do the following:
1. Take phone back to att and get a replacement
OR
2. Re-flash your android with the STOCK kernel found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
OR
3. Reflash with cognition x2 (reported to solve a member's problem, I didn't try this myself).
NOTE** This will root your phone, you will NOT get the exclamation mark during boot up, but kernel counter may be at "1" after this process.
Re-flashing my phone AND applying the three tricks I mentioned above worked for me..finally my phone is no longer crippled with crappy battery life and recharging is A LOT faster now.
I must be going crazy but this sg2 is killing me. I got it from Att yesterday and the battery life has been pretty HORRIBLE. (First time android user btw).
The phone will eat up 10% of my batter life after only 90 mins of idle. I checked the battery usage and Android OS is at around 78%!!! How do I fix this problem? I downloaded OS monitor and didn't really see anything that uses a lot of CPU, except for certain files syncing from time to time (but 2-3% usage usually).
Checked with battery spy and apparently the majority of the time, the phone was hovering around 200mhz 70% of the time and not deep sleep.
It's sad to have only 1.5 hours of display time with a battery of 45% left (7 hours total time)...coming from an Iphone 3gs, this is just unacceptable. I almost flashed to the 2.3.5 firmware but noticed it's NOT compatible with ATT's version of SG2.
I see people who have a total time of 2 days AND a screen time with 3 hours with 30% battery left. I wish I can get half that!
Running on 2.3.4, can't be the infamous drainage bug right? Thought that only happens with the 2.3.3s
Wifi on, application sync on, GPS off, brightness at 25%, using live wallpaper (the windmill). No active apps on. Downloaded aim, epocrates, battery monitor, cpu spy, and os monitor..rest of the apps are stock.
Update
According to my CPU spy
For the past hour that the phone was in idle
2:20mins at 1200mhz
4:52mins at 1000mhz
8:33 at 800mhz
1:28 at 500mhz
10:11 at 200mhz
33:36 in deep sleep
Currently Android CPU usage is @ 97%, display time of 7mins(2%)
2h 30mins since last charge (97% charge)..current power is 79%. Did nothing but idling and checking battery life.
So...that's 30 mins out of the hour in which my idling cellphone was hacking the pentagon....
Also the cellphone is a tiny bit warm to the touch (not cold)
I have 35% battery life remaining and have been unplugged for nearly 11 hours. This is significantly better than what I was getting with a Thunderbolt on Verizon, where I was needing to charge after about six hours of use. 11 hours and 35% remaining isn't the best in the world, but it's only been two days. The phone needs a few days to charge and discharge to determine true battery stats and will probably get better.
Being that this is your first Android battery life will not seem great but let it settle in for a few days it should get better.

If you only got the phone yesterday, its way to early to make any judgments on battery life. Battery needs at least 3-5 days to settle in and build consistent battery stats.
Also, what are you settings? Auto Brightness, Bluetooth, GPS, auto syn(exchange emal, gmail, facebook, etc). If your not using these, they should be OFF. It's easy to manually refresh email, etc.
I've seen some people reporting very high Android OS(over 50%) but still getting solid battery life.
I'm at 1hr display time, heavy texting. 72% left, been unplugged for 12hrs
no people what this guy is talking about is the android os bug. i have it too. hopefully an upgrade or different rom will fix it. my phone has been unplugged 11 hours with only 1 1/2 hour display but android os has ran for 52 minutes and now im at 32% battery life. once this bug gets worked out the battery life will be amazing.
I don't think that there is an android OS bug. My android OS shows as being 42% with 13hrs of moderate use and I am still at 67% battery remaining. This is by far the best battery use I have ever experienced on an android device! My cappy would not even come close to this performance and this is on stock ROM and kernel.

I'm very happy with mine, this was the first total drain on a new battery so I know it will only get better.
Total time: 18hr 25min
Display time: 4hr 48min
I think it's the system os, not the hardware. There were a few times when the battery didn't discharge itself at 7%/hour (had it idle for 3 hours and it went down like 2%).
And yes, everything is turned off except the sync app data and wifi. There's no option to turn off 4g btw. It's just weird how sometimes it's in this mode of power drainage, and then sometimes it doesn't drain much..but most of the time, it's draining.
I seriously doubt the phone can only run 2.5 hours worth of heavy usage or 12 hours of standby (it should last days!). If this is "normal" for android, then maybe I should have a visit back to att and exchange for an iphone (and I really don't to!)

I agree - as I said in the Android OS drain thread, even in "good" situations, Android OS displays way high on our systems. I think it's a reporting bug.
I dropped 2% in 5.5 hours completely idle (sitting on my shelf) last night - Android OS was at over 60%. It seems that so far for me, the higher it is, the better my battery life is.
I drop around 15-20% in 9 hours of being mostly idle at my desk at work - it's a weak-signal location so the radio eats much more battery.
One thing is that unlike first-generation GalaxyS devices and interim ones like the Infuse, the GS2 has a coulomb-counter type of battery gauge. This type of gauge sometimes needs to be calibrated with multiple charge/discharge cycles or it will misreport battery state of charge. (However, when calibrated, it's much more accurate.)
Edit: I do have some power management tweaks in the kernel I'm running, but they don't make that much off a difference except in some high-drain corner cases in my experience. I'll be releasing it sometime later this week depending on how well these antibiotics do their job.
Do i need to install a battery app to see the percentage? or we have a way?

If you see "DataTracker-FD" or "Fast Dormancy" as the top wake lock, go into dialer
dial *#*#9900#*#*
disable Fast Dormancy (FD).
By default, the Samsung Galaxy S II has Fast Dormancy support enabled. One of the goals of Fast Dormancy is to increase the battery life of a device, by limiting the amount of signaling between the phone and the cell network. But, when Fast Dormancy it is not enabled in the network and is enabled on the phone it ironically works the other way around, and actually drains more battery than before.

That applies to the I9100.
As far as I can tell, the I777 has FD disabled by default. (This may change once I9100 ROM ports start showing up)
Okay, charged my battery to 97%(I got a beep saying it's fully charged). Idled for the past 2 hours and 22 mins. Battery is at 86%.
According to the battery, my screen account for 2%, and the android system accounts for 97%.
This is a stock phone guys, I have no apps installed!

Just search up "battery indicator" in the Market and you'll get a few to choose from.
I too got mine yesterday and started tinkering around with installing apps and such to test out all functions before I rooted it and move onto cm7 most likely. The 1 things I noticed was that the battery was NOT completely full when it was first turned on at the store so once it got a little lower after playing with it I charged it up overnight. Today the battery was WAY BETTER and was not dead yet. I have been using it NON STOP today, rebooting it, testing it, trying to root it, rebooting some more, some time using tango to test it out, watched a Netflix movie, pretty much taking full advantage of it all day. I finally decided to charge it up and use my Captivate a bit. I didn't keep track of usage and times today but I KNOW it lasted a WAY LONGER time with all I was doing with it than my Cappy. Tomorrow I will check more out possibly before putting on a rom.
So LOOOONNNNGGGG STORY short make sure you charge it up once you get it before messing with it too much and then it will LAST LONGER.

After two nights of completely draining then recharging the battery to full, the battery has gotten significantly better. I'm trying to drain it again before I go to bed tonight but I don't think I'll make it.
I played the entirety of Toy Story 3 on max brightness, and only burned 20% of the battery!

Idle battery drain

What kinds of numbers are you seeing in the idle drain department? Last night, I left my SG3 off the charger and 7 hours later, I had lost 10%.
That might not sound bad, but it was connected to wifi and under similar circumstances, my HTC One X was only losing 3-4%.
Just bought my SGS3 ... will inform you later
I lost 20% in 8 hours.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28086740&postcount=31
From my subjective experience HTC phones are better at saving battery in Wifi.
However 3-4% is really low, are you sure it was Wifi always-on (not only on when screen on) and connected to the phone network?
Phone network alone should take like 5% in the 7 hours.

Yeah, it was definitely on Wifi the entire time. It was the Tegra 3 International version. I just assumed it was the companion core keeping the drain low.
That being said, the One X had serious issues. The e-mail app would periodically stop picking up exchange mail and the battery percentage would drop pretty drastically in the first few minutes I started using it again. It also had pretty crippled multitasking that prevented anything from running in the background for very long. All of these things could combine to indicate that it was really draining more than it was saying.
I suppose 10% isn't bad. My iPhone 4s loses around 7% overnight, but we're also talking about a 2100 mah battery vs 1400.

How's your Verizon Moto E 2015 battery life???

I'm averaging about 2hrs sot per charge. 2nd charge
Really? I've seen many reviews that praise the battery, one said it's hard to kill.

I had ~2 hours screen on time last night. This was used mostly for YouTube and some emulation. I plugged it in for the night at 65% or so? You must have an app that is keeping the phone awake when you're not using it.
ive noticed on my UK 2nd gen version that even with all of the battery draining features (data/gps/vibration etc) turned off and "Flight mode" enabled with no sim installed that it's standby time when its mainly sitting dormant seems rather poor compared to my galaxy s3..when comparing both battery stats (my s3 being my main phone connected to a network) my s3 is much more efficient with a leveled decreasing battery graph where as my moto E is like a steep decline...it will go a week between charges if i dont use it where as ive had upto 15 hours on screen time at min brightness with very few apps installed (only bought as a toy, spare) just watching videos..my s3 with stock battery would never get this result it confuses me..on average the moto E loses around 6% per day just standing by while my s3 which is connected and used to text periodically looses about the same..wierd.
I got roughly 5.5hrs of SOT with a poor signal. This is the Verizon variant on Tmobile. It says 7hrs because I started charging while it had 1.5hrs sot, and only charged up to 80%. So these stats were accomplished by using 60% (80-20) of the battery's capacity. Usage consists of opera mini, youtube, short calls, feebly, mixture of LTE/H+, xda app, email, and setting up apps/accounts.
If a root exploit can be found then battery could become much better with greenify and some pesky services disabled. Personally, I'm impressed because I couldn't achieve close to this on a rooted ZF2.

FWIW, kingroot app works. I know some peoples' feelings toward the app - but it did the job.
EDIT - NVM, it doesn't seem to be working on 5.1.
I like the phone's battery. One thing that I'm not sure is a problem with my phone is that I find it to charge really slow with the Motorola Charger, but with my ZTE tablet charger, it charges in about 1,5 hrs. Amperage, maybe? The Motorola charger has 550 mAh, while my tablet has 1500 mAh.

on the XT1528 verizon model the battery life seems to be poor when it was connected to their network. I have dropped the service with them and have been using that phone to play mp3's while we work out the bootlaoder. the battery is preforming much better while playing mp3 most constantly. they seem to be using some resource hogs in their bloatware in my opinion.
My first XT1528 had terrible battery life, but I accidentally bricked it within the first week. My replacement XT1528 has awesome battery life, however. My basis for comparison is my old LG659 (by the end of the day I would average around 25% remaining battery.) The first Moto E would hit 15% in a couple of hours. My current Moto E is typically around 75% by the end of the day now. I'll post a screenshot tonight so there will actually be some usage statistics (sitting at 98% right now.)

Poco X2 Estimated Battery Capacity by Accubattery

So i regularly use AccuBattery app in my android device. It's a very useful one.
So i installed this on my new Poco X2. Those who've used it know that it can estimate your current battery capacity based on charge sessions and some other stuff.
And upon using it showed my Poco X2's estimated battery at around only 3800mah.
And a lot of users also are complaining about battery backup on flipkart.
Please check and post your device's estimated battery capacity via AccuBattery app.
Unfortunately, what Flipkart reviews say is actually right, this phone has serious SOT problems with 120 hz i only get 6.5 hours sot and 8 hours with 60hz and I don't even use it heavily just YouTube and small games with social media. This phone has very poor optimization. I know i shouldn't compare but if you look at realme 6 pro almost same specs but with smaller battery (4300) gives 1 hour more SOT even with heavy usage(both set to 60hz). This is absolutely disappointing, eagerly waiting for custom roms and custom kernels to make it as my daily driver. Will update you on the accubattery results

Thankyou, waiting for it.
Bafore this I was using standard China Rom with mine and battery was a mess. But I unlocked & flash MIUI.eu. I add-on "naptime" to help with Doze & using Universal GMS Doze magisk module. Managed to get almost 8hrs SOT with ads removed, bloatware removed & MSA removed. Maybe you should give it a try and see ?

Battery is fine for me
Don't know how people here getting more than 3.8k mah estimated. Mine doesn't go above that. I'm pretty sure some units have battery problem as reported by few buyers on Flipkart. Some said battery is excellent while some said poor battery. I think poco x2 indian units are suffering more. Since after watching some tests on the redmi k30 Chinese variant by YouTubers they got significanly more SOT. I tweeted to them, no reply from their side yet ?
I got my K30 directly from China. No battery issues whatsoever.
I've been getting consistent SOT of 9.5 hrs on average with heavy use. SOT range for me has been 7 hrs (120Hz) - 11 hrs (60 Hz) on 4G LTE (you can check my post on SOT thread).
Being a heavy user, this battery life has literally blown me away and I absolutely love this phone simply for that. I can easily get thru a very heavy day with 30-40% battery left. I've been charging the phone twice every three days on average.
I'm on stock CN ROM (MIUI 11.0.13 Stable)
I easily get 8 hours + SOT with gaming. I play cod and pubg extensively.
Battery life update after using a month .
Mild gaming and social media usage.
Average sot is around 10hrs , battery lasts 30-50hrs depending on camera usage.

Is AccuBattery reliably on first cycles? If many users have 3800 mah insted of 4500mah then something stinks here

I did some quick research across the web and it looks like there are three types of d
1. Battery Drain issue devices, they have bad battery issues, battery capacity way below 4500 and widely varying with users. Screen off discharge is way off charts, like >5%/hr. SoTs varying around 5hrs or <5hrs
2. Inefficient battery devices. (Majority) They have battery capacity much below the specification, however less varying, always around 3800mAh. Battery doesn't drain that badly
I have this device, heavy usage like pubg clocks around 15-20%/hr, normal usage around 10%hr and screen off discharge rate at 0.5-0.9%/hr. Hardly discharges 2-3 percent through the night
3. Ok devices. These are the best sets. Battery capacity constantly goes above 4000mAh (still doesn't hit the required 4500 mark tho). No serious battery drain issues. (I don't know much about these devices because they don't look into the web coz they have no issues.

Usually i get around 9hrs 30 min sot on 60hz and around 8hrs on 120hz...( Without gaming ) after the update of miui 11.0.11 my phones battery backup gradually increased 1 hr on 120hz...+ I did some tweaks blocking system apps from running in the background
After using the phone for 8 months, I noticed that charging speeds have significantly reduced. At the beginning, the battery went from 0-100% in ~70-75 mins if I remember correctly (cross checked this with another review website).
But when I properly checked today (after a long time), it took 118 mins (2 hrs!) for the battery to go from 2-100%. I also plan to check this with the screen/phone off again.
The battery life is still great though, maybe slightly reduced compared to the beginning.

Question Standby battery drain

For those who are using a moto X40 converted to Edge 40 Pro (or even a stock X40/Edge 40 Pro), how's the standby battery drain? Mine is around 1% per hour with dual 4G sims active, and with Peek Display enabled. However I think the standby drain is a bit too high for my liking and checking through the Android battery stats it seems like Mobile Network is taking a good chunk of the battery's power consumption.
I may be overthinking things though as I only had this phone for a couple of days :/
i don't care about battery drain, but i came from a iphone 13 pro max with 100 % of battery health, wich i still own, and this Moto like iphone gives me more than 2 days of battery, i'm not a heavy user, and with wifi at home endurance is better
