With a heavy heart :( - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Hello!
A lil back story!
Im coming from a nexus 5 32gig, used it for 4 years, broke its screen and now kept it on the side.
was dying to purchase the iphone se for 21k via bajaj emi card, sadly that option wasn't available.
The only option i had was honor 8 pro 30k.
Device was great but i would have to care alot and i thought spending that much on that phone might not be worth it. phone seems great, but that big phone isn't really my thing and i doubt id use it to its full potential.
So with a heavy heart i booked the note 4 32 gig[as thats more than enough for me]
I dont mean to offend anyone, im sure people love the phone and its GREAT for the price. thats why i got it
ill be getting it tomorrow, so before it arrives i thought id get my self prepared and cheer my self up.
i plan to make alot of changes, it would be great if someone could guide me!
1] I plan to change the firmware to lineage os or any suggestions are welcome?
2] anyway i can get stereo speakers mod? like earpiece and bottom firing speaker together?[i did it on my nexus 5]
3] Any camera mods?
4] If i flash the custom firmware would it make an impact on my battery life? i kinda felt it does on the camera, but still?
5] Any mods i should install from your end guys? PLEASE advice?
I got this phone cause it has great support, great built and amazing battery!
So i just thought i can make it my own lil Pixel [aka nexus 5 replacement]
Really looking forward to some help
Thank you all:fingers-crossed:

Hi!
1. There are customs with much more features than LOS and you can find them there on xda. I hope you ordered a snapdragon variant!
2. Im pretty sure that i've seen something like that, but trust me - you dont want to try that, because earpiece is just much worse than normal speaker.
3. Everything is on xda! But sadly i dont think that camera will be that "good" as on MIUI because MIUI has it's own camera libraries. So if you want better camera stick to MIUI.
4. Not really. Usually only kernel affects battery life.
5. Viper4Fx and dolby atmos for better sound. Don't install any AWESOME 4K SOUND MODS.

That's not true, ported Google HDR+ Camera is actually WAY better than stock MIUI camera, especially in low light. It can shot in RAW format, working HDR+ and Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and 4k recording for videos.
It can be used on both MIUI and all custom ROM's after enabling Camera2 API.

1. If you just want stock android just go with LineageOS, it's the best... If you want more you can go with Slim, PA, XenonHD, AospExt they're among the best custom rom out there
2. Dunno, I don't like music with the phone speaker because it always suck, I'm listening with my earphone and it's good enough compared to my legendary ipod touch, I can't find any significant downside.
3. Hopefully you will not get omnivision sensor because it really sucks on low light and you can't use the hdr+ mods until MIUI dev fix the bugs for omnivision sensor.
4. Yes and No, you will end up with about 10 hours of SoT... you will get 12 if the ROM is good, at least 8 if the ROM sucks.
5. Just check your camera if its sony or samsung just get the hdr+ because the only complaints about RN4 is low light camera performace, the hdr+ mod makes it perfect

There isn't such thing as best rom, but im now using ViperOS. I really liked also HalogenOS but i don't like AOSP based ROMS, I prefer LOS-based ones. You may also check xiaomi.eu rom

No modds except that Google camera. The rest is just Octos rom. Not even custom kernel because ,for this device, every custom kernel is worse than stock Los one. Pretty unbelievable a?.
But battery life is unbelievable also so no need for adjustment there.

Read guide, not possible to instantly unlock bootloader. After binding device with Mi Account you have to wait 72 hours to unlock bootloader.

You can get permission even in 5 minutes, you still have to wait 72 hours after binding device, sometime ago there was workaround using old unlocker but it's no longer working.

is the mate 2 lo3 worth getting?

compared to say the grand x max+? also which is most stable rom besides stock for lo3? thanks for replys
also to root i have unlock it?
Yes
I've had a lot of good phones. Original Note and LG G2 among the best. I still use my Mate 2 as a daily driver. Totally love it. It will be a sad day when it stops working.
Off the top of my head (which may be really outdated), spec-wise and price-wise, I think the Mate 2 is better than any other of its competitors. Again, I haven't been paying much attention lately, so I might be out of the loop quite badly. But for a nearly 4,000 mAh battery and, thanks to some amazing people on this forum, quite a few custom ROMs, I have absolutely no complaints. I'm not replacing this anytime soon. My previous phone was used for either 3 or 4 years.
Just be glad you weren't here from October 2014 to June 2015.
Lol true. Got my own cm ROM made. And working on compiling omni ROM. Shm has several ROMs for it. And cm has L and MM as well. Way better device with stock ROM replaced.

I've actually been using the stock ROM for the past month or so, maybe longer. Actually not that bad, I like EMUI. However, I am missing some features of custom ROMs, like swiping notifications on the lockscreen getting rid of them instead of opening them, and being able to change the DPI without everything breaking.
Also, Xposed apparently doesn't work on B322? I haven't tried it myself, but that does suck if true. I used several modules back on B128.
Edit: Does anyone know if there's a way to get the Huawei camera app on CyanogenMod? I think I'm gonna switch back, but the stock camera is garbage, and Google Camera has a weird preview issue in portrait (image is squashed, but turns out fine after it's captured).

Just hope something doesn't so wrong. I have one rebooting from Bluetooth being turned on and they won't replace it.
am i supposed to update the phone or anything before unlocking?
You need to be on B322
And if it is CC or wind. Unlock the carrier lock before flashing CM etc

Indeed! Only thing to note with Candy Six is that live wallpapers seem to be broken at the moment, and Clock consistently crashes every time I try to open it. That may or may not have something to do with the Layers theme I installed though.

So who still checks this Forum ? ( ********* PLEASE READ ******** )

I know this device is old.. its the only one I have right now and have no clue if i'd ever get the money to upgrade.. just curious how many people still check this forum or if i'm one of the only few...
Also if you are a typical visitor.. maybe post up so I can get to know this Note II community.
Thanks!
interesting.. 10 views already and no votes or posts... lol..
i see it has 23 views.. and 2 responses. Great! so there is still some life here. Are any developers still here?
I still use this device for gaming only. I play Underworld Empire via WiFi/mobile hotspot. Have multiple toons in the games . It is rooted and running TeamOctos MM weekly build rom.
I use my old Note II as a training device for my 6 year old. The thing is a tank.

thanks guys for responses! So i'm guessing there aren't anymore developers still working on this phone?
Not sure if there is any that hangs around this forum. TeamOctos has their rom on their own website, I'm glad they still make weekly builds for this phone. Runs pretty smoothly for me.

First Off, thanks for the response!
Second, Yeah i would love to go with a newer weekly build and version of android.. .. but I just really like to have screen options to turn screen off, bring up power menu, and have options for screenshot and screen record. I had forgotten about the power of XPosed Framework ( which R3D utilizes ) and perhaps that could help make OCTos more useful for me..
I also do like some of the touchwiz features that I can use with the S-Pen.. so i'm torn.. LOL
I have xposed installed along with TeamOctos, gravity box mm module installed. Since TeamOctos rom have most of the features, I scantily use the gravity box options. Don't wanna break anything lol. I find the s-pen was more a gimmick than anything else. The capacitive buttons don't work with the pen, have to manually press with finger (this was fixed with the Note 3, which I sold). Also there are 3rd party apps that can do just about the same as the Samsung spen apps.

yeah i was using that for a little bit.. but I noticed the overall sound volume seemed to be lower... when I went back to 4.4.2 , i could really hear the difference... i'm not sure if that is a AOSP issue or what.. do you notice it?
Yes unfortunately it is because of AOSP. I remember having to manually editing a mixer.xml file to increase the volume but still wasn't close to the sound level of TW rom. I got use to the low lvls after a while.
Now I don't use it as my daily driver so sound isn't really an issue anymore. Performance and battery life is what I'm looking for so it's ideal.

Ahh ok thank you. that makes me feel a lot better to know it wasn't just me that noticed it and that it wasn't directly related to my phone or my flash status...
so I guess its not an easy fix or even possible since it wasn't addressed when this phone was still being developed... darn..
I really don't recall what the reasoning was, if it was due to drivers or software. It can be remedied by editing the sound file, I believe someone has done it with this phone. Do a post search for low sound or mixer.xml on here.
Haha not trying to sell AOSP roms or anything but I find them more useful with their options. Isn't that the main reason people use Android phones, for their customization?

HA yes.. but i guess for those of us that don't have multiple phones to try out different ROMs and updates :silly: constantly have to find the happy medium between stability, functionality and customization.. Right now i'm gonna stick with TW 4.4.2 (at least on my Note II) since I need to have these things on my phone for me to use it as a daily driver:
1. Stable (won't freeze up / random reboots / random power offs / FC'ers)
2. Camera - Camera must be able to take great photos (at least as good as the physical camera is)
3. Sound - Must have great sounding audio for voice calls / speakerphone / ringtones and for media watching
4. Functional - Must be able to not miss calls / notifications or messages and connect to data for internet
5. Battery - Battery must be decent to good.. want it to be able to last at least 1 day of medium to heavy use..

You are correct there. I could not find it either myself. I wonder if TeamOctos even included it in their build for this phone. I checked with another phone of mine (LG G3) thats running the same ROM. It has the mixer_paths.xml in the folder system/ETC. May have to contact them to find out why... Sorry, like I've mentioned, I don't use my Note II as a daily driver so haven't had the need to increase the sound levels. I wonder if its possible to just copy the file from another ROM?

yeah i thought about that but nervous with all that modifications either messing something up or not even getting it as loud as TW..
right now i think ill stay with a 4.4.2 rom and use xposed to get the features i like. do wish i had 6.0 but have to be happy with what i got. ?
Sorry I couldn't have been more helpful. Hope things will look up for you and that you may be able to afford a newer phone. This years phone releases haven't been all the great, maybe next year will see some really great improvements. The biggest thing is the battery life in most cell phones nowadays (unless you have removable option). Manufacturers will never give you a better battery/longer life because they want consumers to keep buying newer phones. Batteries usually only have a lifetime of about ~1.5 years, the more you charge, the less it will hold a charge. Forces people to buy new phones

yeah true.. and for me its difficult because i'm fairly picky with what I want in the phone... seems like i haven't actually found a "perfect" one yet... several will have 80 to 90% but some will be missing 1 major thing i want.. and then i have to decide how important that is... So far from all the phones i had.. I think my Nexus 5 would probably me my all time favorite... of course I would have preferred an AMOLED display, front facing speakers and better cameras... but again.. had to pick and choose... the HTC 10 was amazing as well.. but I did have some issues with my LTE signal dropping.. so not sure if it was a fluke or because of my Total Wireless service? maybe the ROM.. idk.. LOL
Hmm favorite all time, may have to go with my Note 3 til I sold it. Had it with Verizon, unfortunately the bootloader was locked and when I updated to Jasmine rom, screwed up and lost root. It was a great phone, s pen is so useful, removable battery, amoled display, SD card slot. Camera was alright, my V10 excels in that department! I'm with T-mobile now, service is great for where I need it and their phones are mostly bootloader unlocked. Can easily root them.
Watching Floss Carter on YouTube, with his review of HTC 10. His biggest negative factor is that the phone is too small for him. Everything else is good, he even mentions that HTC should've made two options like HTC 10 and 10+.
His top 5 phones:
1: Note 5
2: Nexus 6p
3: iPhone 6s+
4: S7 edge
5: LG G5

Miui 10 stock camera app/google camera bad image quality/performance

Hi!
I would like to ask if anyone on here could extract stock miui 10 xiaomi mi 8 camera app for me. I find photos taken with google cam to have really low quality (at least for now), and taking photos is kinda slow. I cannot do that myself because I'm currently on pixel 2 rom and don't really want to go back, because of the full substratum support on here. Again, I would be pleased if anyone of You could do that little favor for me.
PS I'm aware that it might not work, I'm actually 90% certain that it won't, but I still want to give it a try, since all I found on the web were ports from mi A1, and quite frankly they didn't work. Thanks in advance.
+1, hope someone can make it
+1 I support your request, I was checking some guide to do it by myself but it's beyond my skills.
I support that also !

Porting of frameworks is a thing. Sure thing, I don't have necessary abilities to do so, but still wanted to give it a go.

Nah man, the Miui stock cams is not even that good.
Wait for a GCam port for Pixel2Rom.. is better.
Its not worth messing with miui framework for a medriocre camera app.

For me quality is better on miui than on gcam, because it's already there if You haven't noticed. Also there are more options on stock camera app, which I really like, even more so the performance is better so.. I guess it's subjective, people have their own tastes and preferences.

Someone did it on Oneplus One, I guess it can be done. Anyway it would be the only Cam app to actually use both camera sensor, unlike Gcam

Thanks in advance.

seems like this died, having issues on pie with the app being made for an older version? planning to revive this idea?

Use GCAM on rooted stock Mi 8 Lite

I am still on stock Oreo, rooted, running MIUI 10.2.2.0 (Android 8.1). I have already modified my build.prop to enable API 2.0. OpenCamera and Manual Camera both seem to function properly, even using RAW mode.
I would like to install GCAM on stock ROM while still deciding which custom ROM to eventually install. My front camera is not working, which I would like to fix, but not a huge deal right now. Where do I get GCAM for my OS and any necessary libs to install? GCAM doesn't show up in a Google Play search so I assume I have to side load it. Where can I find it and what else am I missing here?

Hi,
As far as I know, there s no working GCam apk for Mi8 lite.
I'd love to get it but it s not possible nowadays.
Maybe in the future hopefully.
You can check this topic where all the working mids of GCam for all devices are listed.
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-port-hub/?nocache=1
You ok notice that many Xiaomi are listed but not mi8 lite.
Good day

Well, you got my curiosity up, so I started trying the different Xiaomi GCAM releases and actually found one that works on the Mi 8 Lite. I can not vouch for how well it will continue to work in the long term, but it does work. I took a few snap shots with different settings, including Night Sight. All works. It is the one for the Pocophone F1 dated March 5 (MGC_6.1.021_XCAMBase_F1_v3.apk). Everything seems to work except for taking 4K video. That gives me only a black screen. Change the setting to 1080P (it defaults to 4K) and video DOES work. Give it a try. Your mileage may vary.
Here is the link to it: https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/gcamera/MGC_6.1.021_XCAMBase_F1_v3.apk
Edit: Now this is VERY weird! After it worked in all modes last night, today it only works in Lens Blur mode. No other mode works now, not even video. WTH? I changed nothing on the phone itself! I think it started not working when I turned the flash on. So if you try this, do NOT turn the flash on and see if it works for you. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. Still broken.

Wow that should have take much time to test every single one? I just tried few and has none worked I gave up.. Your test is interesting I guess a developer would find a way making it working... I think one day we love have a fully working app, hopefully. Maybe you should report your experience under the proper thread and it could help the devs making it work for the mi8 lite?
Thanks for the info anyway

To be honest, I did not try every single one. I just tried the newest version for each phone. The F1 latest worked so well at first. I just cannot for the life of me figure out why it worked, then stopped working. That just blows my mind!!
Okay thx for telling us. I think I'm gonna share your experience in mi8 game thread maybe one dev will have a look and help us.
That said I notice the community for mi8 was way more larger than our so I'm afraid that as long as mi8 lite will remain less owned that any other major Xiaomi device like pocophone F1 or mi8 it'll be hard to get développer attention.
Just have to hope a dev finally buy one lol...

That would be GREAT man! A real dev could probably figure this out in very little time. Hopefully so. I will be moving to either the Pixel Experience or Resurrection Remix ROM in the not so distant future. Just dont have time right now to mess with it. New upcoming job, mom in hospital, lots of crap going on to be worried about complications on the phone right now. I cannot have much downtime on it atm unfortunetly. I cannot afford to miss any calls.
Anyway, did you try it yourself?
No I didn't tried yet.
But great news on other thread in mi8 lite forum someone provided a solution.

I am now on the PE ROM, which works quite well, especially now that it does include the current Mi 8 Lite kernel from the Xiaomi source code PIE kernel (also meaning it is no longer firmware specific). Even DT2W works because of this. I have noticed that LineageOS is not getting any updates here anymore. It is already two months behind in Google security updates alone. GCAM works right out of the box with Pixel Experience. If you really need GCAM, give it a try. You can even download GCAM from Google Play with this ROM, as it appears to Google as a real Pixel phone.

Well, gotta say, the one from play store works almost fine. The panorama photos are the problem. They make the app crash. All cameras seems to have an issue. Almost all the apks and the lineage camera does not have a way to make the video work. That was my main problem. Now the video works, but the best think about the 2 lens on back, the panorama pics, don't ?

Question Software Questions about the 23U

My questions may seem dumb but I have never owned a Samsung phone.
I know samsung likes their bloatware and proprietary methods. Can I avoid all the samsung bloat and a samsung account and still use the phone? Are there ROMs that give a stock android experience?
Also what are you guys seeing for SOT? Im coming from a Asus ROG 6 Pro.
Any bugs you guys are experiencing? My 6Pro is so full of bugs that has pushed me to move brands.
You don't need a custom rom, you don't even need to root it, just use universal android debloater gui from github or adb app control to remove all the bloat (both include good instructions and details about what to remove) and going through first time set up you don't need a samsung or google account.
Unless you are using an international version there is no custom ROM option. The 918U and U1 models don't have the option to OEM unlock and flash ROMs.
You can easily umbloat using the mentioned universal android debloater.
Ui downloaded the 5.0 or sth like that and updated, then it all went south.
Stayed with the 5.0 version and it works great.
As for the ROM I put Nova Launcher and it works fine
Not the same but as long as the X3 camera shoots ****ty pictures I'll leave it warranty capable

What's wrong with your x3? Mine's impeccable. Didn't hear about any other complaints whatsoever.

No bugs. Phone is super smooth and battery is amazing. About bloatware you can find everything you need in XDA thread called "Samsung Galaxy One UI - Optimization Guide".

Well, I used the "remove noise" or whatsoever option.
But for a X3 zoom I find the quality more than disappointing.
My Vivo X70Pro shots better photos.
Applied goodlock camera assistant, a bit better, and even gcam.
But quality just sucks for such a "high end" model...
Hoping on a FW fix though since with gcam its quite less worse
No issue here with 3x zoom with my S23U camera (B-version, EUX), just stock point&shoot....
Something like this ?
I'll retry with more natural light.
Maybe that's the issue.
Was pretty dark the time I took the picture
Awesome, thanks for the replies. Since there is no custom roms, do we still have unlock and root available? At bare minimum i would like to install AdAway got universal ad blocking.

We can unlock and root. Look for the guide in this sub forum. Root will tripped knox tho, so some samsung app won't work. I would suggest using adhell to block ad

No magisk module or similar to get around this?
My biggest concern is just losing the samsung camera, I hear other cameras apks dont work well with the phone.

Please try to activate night mode before switching to x3. Also in low light you need to be VERY still for the sensor and ISP to work its magic.
Moreoever, keep your lenses clean as much as possible.
These 2 photos I just shot now in a very dimly light room.

Just wondering why someone would apply night mode while using light in their living room
But if works like this, this is what it is .
Thanks for the info
