I've looked around and no one seems able to 100% confirm or deny if there is a notification LED.
I know the G6 doesn't so im hoping they have rectified their error...?

There is OLED notification via always on display. OLED make an extra LED at the top obsolete, especially in bezelless designs.

Notification LEDs will never be obsolete. The s8 still has one and it's very useful, despite it having always on display.

Was a German video on areamobile.

Hmmm... Yes, that's what happened with some of the Moto phones. There's a green LED notification for low battery only, but devs modified it to be general notification LED in custom ROMs.

I wonder if this was the proximity sensor which is just reacting to the camera?
It is obsolete, OLED can totally emulate an LED and look exactly the same. No need for an extra component. Just use an LED notification emulator for always on display.
Well, if there's an out-of-box function which has a simple notification on the OLED screen which works the same way as a traditional LED, then I would accept.
As for S8, they have notification on the AOD... which is fine.
But wait.. I'm one of those who does not have a lock screen, thus I can never get notification icons on my AOD. That sucks. So you can imagine if the S8 does not have a notification LED, I'd be forced to turn on the lock screen, or live without any notification indication.
Bummer..
Really bad movement by LG not to have led notification despite having AOD.
S8 series has both of them so why not by LG.

Actually it does seem to have LED notification. I am going by specs on a couple websites that list it as available and the picture on LG's website.

I'm ok with AOD too.
But.. is the AOD with all notifications present without a lock screen? I've love to know :fingers-crossed:
Considering how much they've been pushing the AOD, it'll most likely not have a notification LED. I however would love one, despite the AOD.
I feel like an old timer who can't adjust to how things are right now, but I feel like AOD's are a waste of valuable battery resources (however light they may be).
I know an AOD will work wonders considering the amount of information it can display on a notification, but having an RGB LED pulse like night rider just sits better with my liking. I love having a green pulse for whatsapp, a teal pulse for group messages, a white pulse for sms and a purple pulse for missed calls (red for e-mails etc).
I'd love to have somthing wide like Pixel C. Maybe a notificaiton LED and an AOD triggered with the proximity sensor (flick of your hand, or pulling it out of your pocket etc) with a summary of the message or event.
But yeah, it probably won't have an LED. and yeah, despite talking so much about it, I probably won't miss it (except for the cringy feeling inside me when I go to camp and want to squeeze all my battery has to offer and I have to turn my AOD off)
I hope you can customize the heck out of the AOD or have an LED notification lookalike. Otherwise this is a dealbreaker. I use that light for everything.
Depends on your usage but for me RGB NLED is simpler and more effective than AOD. AOD is better if you keep your phone close to you at all times as it provides richer information. But i'm not glued to my phone. When I'm doing other things at work or at home I leave my phone on a desk or sofa or whatever but I can still see the NLED from a distance and decide whether to ignore it or not depending on the colour.
AOD on the G6 and S7 were not very visible at a distance. Maybe it's brighter now, I'm not sure. Will have to check it out in person. Also I'm not sure how much the AOD impacts battery life.
NLED is one of those features that does a simple job but does it effectively with little fuss. Not a deal breaker but I will miss it if it's gone. Paying for a new phone and losing a feature is not a nice feeling. Each to their own I guess
Otherwise I think the LG V30 is close to perfect for me. Was thinking about the Essential Phone but the camera is terrible and no headphone jack is pretty annoying.

When (if) we finally get this baby S-Off and devs start cooking kernels, will they be able to tweak how bright the capacitive lights are? On my device, at least, the lights are so bright they look a little pink. Is that something controlled by the kernel? If the brightness on them was dialed down, I feel like it might help.

Absolutely. That's can absolutely be incorporated into the kernel. If a dev makes a configurator for the terminal emulator th u can adjust it by a percentage. We had a few configurators for the EVO and the settings were for both OCing and the capacitive button. Very useful

Devs can tweak the Capacitive brightness through kernel, Evo 3D & Sensation both can change their brightness. But there's a script that lets you change the lights from bright to dim and then off. Although Faux has managed to make the Leds dynamic based on the screen brightness, which is quite useful.
Having a dynamic ability would be great! However, 9/10 you can see the buttons without them being lit at all.
I couldn't care less about the brightness, I more hate they're so inconsistent. At home with my incadescent lights, they never come on. At work with all of the flourescent lighting where it's much brighter, they do turn on. Makes no sense man!
Could just be the lighting the sensor is more sensitive to.

Sounds pretty consistent to me. Sorry, couldn't help myself.
Yeah, I had the EVO 3D for a few weeks, and when we only had temp root I did a lot of playing around with terminal scripts, for OC and whatnot. But this is good news! Like somebody said, you rarely actually need them. But when you do, they don't even need to be very bright at all to be seen. I feel like at stock levels, it is a little overboard.
I think even having it at 50% would be more than enough. Anyway, thanks for the responses. Looking forward to such development.

i usually want my led lights as bright as possible, but i know from taking it apart and lighting it up, its pretty much as bright as the led will go, its just the tint of red on the digitizer is thick enough so the light doesnt shine through pink like you said, however maybe on yours the tint is thinner who knows. I usually change phone everytime a new one comes out, or else i would (which i still might) solder on RED leds so i can push them out even brighter red.

I agree, the capacitive keys are too bright and look pink-ish. If we can adjust them to make them dimmer, make them more of a true red, that would be awesome.
My lights are on whenever the screen is on. Is there a way to change it. I have seen post talkin about them never turning on but I rather they never turn on not always be on.

Download an app called Screen Filter. Set it to 100% to keep the normal brightness, then uncheck Enable soft key lighting option. Screen on even in dark with no capacitive lights.
I really hate that they did away with the notification LED, fine if you do that atleast give us something to make up for it. No the small bezels don't count. Appear the gs8 has a slick as hell edge notification light. That is sweet. I've used some apps that put spots on for fasten but they suck. Not really a fan of AOD I find myself looking at the screen way more when it's on and I hate that. Stupidly possibly but still. Not a fan of the apps that make the camera flash either. Too bright and let's everyone know you got a text or call. And at night that craps way too bright. Any other Optoma people using to compensate for no LED?

I'm surprised no reviewers mentioned this. It's absolutely useless. It's the smallest they could possibly add to get it ticked off on the spec sheet. One of a few reasons that I've returned mine.
That and the lazy fingerprint reader...i suppose i'm gonna to return mine too
I just ordered one without any review mentioning this. I'm mostly in slightly dark environments, even being so small, can you still see it in the dark? The fingerprint should be fixed with updates but the led won't, só I hope it won't be a deal breaker.
In a dark room, I could see it, but only if I was looking at the phone almost face on. With it in the bedside table I couldn't notice it. It's unbelievably small.

hardly visible even in compete darkness, no chance in any brighter environment
A minor workaround to check for notification quickly that I've found is to enable the option "Pick up to wake up device". Hidden under Smart assistance > motion control > pickup.
This should make us less reliant on the notification led. instead, we just lift the phone up to have the lockscreen light up to show us the notifications.
Tried using light flow or light manager to control the led color. When I test in light manager it uses the selected color but otherwise it doesn't. Hope it gets fixed on the July update. GPU turbo!
Unfortunately the new firmware that brings the gpu turbo "thing" didn't change anything on the led. Not brighter nor visible... What a flaw
i just bought Amazfit Bip, the battery life it's insane, if you don't use GPS it can last easily one month without charging with 24/7 notifications and heart rate reading every ten minutes plus pedometer
if you don't intend to wear anything on wrist and need notifications, don't buy this phone
The Made by Google Twitter account confirmed the P3 does not come with a notification light! That's insane and takes away one of the great advantages that Android has over iOS. I can't tell you how many times I was unaware of messages and voice mail on my work iPhone because it doesn't give any indication of a missed notification.... For hours and even days!

But knowing Google they probably just removed the feature altogether. It's sad that they can't add all of the options that the Nexus 5 had 6 years ago, which launched for half the price. And then they have the nerve to call it a premium device.

If you remember, the Nexus 6 had one but it wasn't implemented by the factory. It took a tear down before it was found and a clever programmer figured out how to make it work!
It doesn't need one with an OLED display. You can display notification indicators on the display like you could with an led.
I am standing in front of the pixel 3 display and can confirm there is no notification led! Not even in the settings!

I personally will not use the always on feature, so walking the screen will be my only way of seeing missed notifications. Just like the iPhone, Google is forcing you to interact with your phone the way they want, and leaving us without choice.

The usual reviewers aren't helping. Focusing on how pretty the phone is instead of functionality. I'm coming from an S5 which has a multi-color notification LED, SDcard slot, removable battery with durable lightweight removable plastic back, wireless charging, IR transmitter, headphone jack, unlocked bootloader with official lineage support, water resistance, and flat display with no rounded corners. For $1000+ the reviewers and consumers should expect and demand these features plus new stuff. Unfortunately most people don't know or care enough about the hardware or software. Never felt this bitter/unexcited about a $1000 luxury purchase before.
4 GB of ram and 128 GB of storage is not on par with the competition. Not sure why consumers are making excuses for all the shortcomings? I'm buying for stock android, camera, stereo front facing speakers, IP68, wireless charging, and a much faster chip than my current phone. They could easily make it 50% fatter and stuff a massive battery in it with a removable plastic cover with an elastomeric seal but they want us to buy a new one every year or two.
I'm nervously waiting to see if it can be rooted and flashed. If not, there's much better options for the same cost.

Pixel phones purchased direct from Google can all be bootloader unlocked in developer settings. It's easier than just about any other device. Root access will be gained shortly after the phone is released into the wild, and hopefully, Magisk can be used to pass safety net for Google pay. I totally understand your other concerns, but rooting shouldn't be one of them.
No LED totally sucks. I don't use AOD because of increased battery drain and increased burn in. So no way to see if there are notifications without picking up the phone. Weak battery was already bad enough.
I understand it's probably not the biggest deal in the world or anything but for me personally if the notification led is gone, I'm probably going back to Apple.
And this isn't the be-all-end-all reason, Google just seems less and less interested in truly making their devices/software unique and if it's going to essentially be the same thing as an iPhone, then I may as well just have an iPhone.
Kinda OT, but I have to say it's weird that the only other phone i've had that did AOD really good was the OG Moto X. I'll get used it on the P3. I really don't depend on it that much on my P2.... if a notification goes off, I usually hear it or feel the vibration first anyway. Rare are the times I'm spotting a led color "from across the room" lol..
I never have my sound on, drive a truck and use the notification light exclusively for notifications. Forcing me to pick up the phone (as with any professional driver) is ridiculous. Changing colors of the light allowed you to see exactly what or who the notification was from and very private. AOD is distracting and less informative. Makes 0 sense.
I've always used the notification led with my OG Pixel, so now I'm getting used to the aod.
My question for you guys is do you have aod turned on and is there noticeable battery drain from it or any other potential downside? Or do you have it where the aod only turns on from lifting the phone or double tapping?
I'm trying to pick what's the ideal way to go with this. I realize it'll probably be a personal preference deal, I've just never had an aod phone before. Thanks!

New device has green tint anything below 10% (this i can just about live with as i just raise brightness). However i recently noticed in direct sunlight yesterday that i can barely see screen and it tints purple (yes i have adaptive brightness on)
Now something really strange in bright sunlight when a shadow casts across a white screen , the shadow against screen is green has anyone else noticed this ......?

Well the green tint below 10% i don't experience with my phone.
The other notion/complaint, is just natural properties of an OLED panel, all my previous phones had the purple in sunlight tint.
probably the brighter sunlight reflecting in one of the physical layers of the panel. Nothing you can get rid off unless you want LCD.

i have a new phone incoming tomorrow , these are the pictures of green tint (purple sunlight) sounds like something will have to compromise on .. green tint i cant though.

Look, the picture you took in sunlight is normal behavior and physics.
The low light low brightness pictures are indeed not normal, indeed should be exchanged for another device!

also, on the first photo I can see black bar near punch hole
exactly the same as on mine.. will probably send it back
Just got new phone July batch , first impressions are a lot less green tint ..... thank god June panel was a joke July panel I think its still there just a lot less this time ... will see later this evening and post picture back.
black bar across top i can see but not to bothered about this in all honesty.
Colours have to admit whites are cleaner as a result but rest look to be calibrated identical to last panel.
I think my first panel dated May was the best colours just seemed to wow instantly , everyone who saw phone commented on display in a positive manner.

Might that be because your device is prior to May on build?
I think it’s pointless replacing now I’ve had three models and it seems inherent now from my own experiences.

I’m only speculating but my latest device also has it my only device which didn’t have it was built in May , I’m wondering if the early batches had good panels for reviews etc and they cheaped out after that to bring production costs down (speculation as I say) but seen this before with other companies.
One thing I’ve noticed on my latest device is it goes a lot brighter than my previous June model. I’m thinking if I want to keep this device, I’m going to have use light mode which is a shame, if we had root we could just black out all the grey parts like status bar notifications etc and mask issue.

not sure about your theory abt early batches; my device's QC date is April 22 and yet I have display issues
seems this type of issues are pretty common with this panel which is used by both Oppo and OnePlus

the thing is that I can see this issue only at very low brightness, somewhere below ~15%
and in everyday use the display is perfect (I anyway always use light theme)
but then again it bothers me knowing it is there
on the fence now:
send the Oppo back (already have return label) and try luck again with OP8 Pro (order placed, should be dispatched tomorrow; I sent back my first OP 8 for a refund due to same display issues)
or just live with it, keep Oppo and cancel OP 8 order...

I cancelled OP8 order that day as I thought that I can live with Oppo's screen. But I can't, so I sent it back today.
Ordered OP8 pro again, it is arriving tomorrow. Will update once received, fingers crossed.

so, got my 2nd OP8 pro y'day and the black bar is there and green tint at low brightness as well. QC date is May 28th, the same was for my first OP8 pro
this is my 3rd device with same panel and same issues (2x OP8 pro, 1x Find X2 pro)
