Initial Reactions to Note 8 (those with the phone) - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

How is it?? Discuss here! I don't even have the phone but I want to hear what you lucky people are thinking and feeling about it upon receiving it!! ?

It's nice. It's kinda like the Note 7 what with it being tall and slim and all. I still wish it didn't have this edge display and I still wish it had the fingerprint reader on the front (heck put it front and back so it suits everyone). I would not have purchased it if it didn't have iris unlock and voice unlock. It's fast of course. So far so good. It's a nice phone.

I upgraded from the s8+ (I know, I'm an idiot). My first impression is just how similar the two phones are. It really is an s8 with an s-pen, which is enough for me.

It's funny you said it's "of course" fast - that's easily my #1 concern, haha.

Well, I am coming from an S7Edge which was horribly slow.....

At least you can disable the edge feature on the Note 8! I hated it on the note 7 and was pleased to see we can get rid of it now. It was the first thing I noticed in settings.

I just received my Note 8's (4 of them) today Tuesday September 5th. I'm pleased with the feel and overall quality of the phone. After lightly using the phone off and on since I received it today I'm finding that everything runs very smooth. I don't really like the fingerprint sensor placement but it works really well especially compared to my Note 4 that I've been using for 3 years. I also have noticed that the sound can be adjusted to have a very nice quality to it. I am noticing that the battery life seems to be very good but I am just getting familiar with the phone so I have much more to discover.

Strange you could do it on the s7?

I couldn't on the Note 7. Not sure about the S7.

You could disable it on the Note 7. One of the first things I did with my first and second devices before the final recall. I don't remember where the setting was a year later, but it definitely was there.

I'm tempted to do the same, would you say you're happy with the change, or do you think it was a waste of money?

Yes and no, the main camera is the same, it just has a second telephoto camera.

I'm curious if anyone has tried the N8 with the Gear VR. I constantly have overheating problems with both the S7 Edge and the Note 5 when watching movies while flying. With the faster processor I am hoping that the N8 runs a little cooler.

Can disable edge feature on the Note FE.

For those that think the camera in the note8 is the same as the S8, it might be the same Hardware, but the software is very much upgraded. If you search YouTube for video comparison between the note8 and the S8 you will

The S7Edge got boiling hot for me with the Gear VR, but the Note 7 only got warm. Hopefully, the Note 8 would perform even better than the 7.

Glad to hear it's in there.
Can't do it with screen off though, correct? That's a Google phone exclusive I assume?

I like the feel of the Note 8 a lot more than the S8+. The fingerprint sensor is better placed (for me at least, i have long fingers and the spacing helps) and the phone being less rounded makes it easier to hold. Surprised how much bigger the screen looks than the plus and the camera software is a little bit better than on the s8+. Solid comeback for the Note line. I think the Note 9 is where they are going to try and really differentiate the S series and Note again. They could have made the Note 8 screen even bigger if they wanted, but played it safe this time to get us back. Best phone out in my opinion.

My Note came today. I've had about 6 hours to use it. It feels a good bit faster than the Pixel XL and I like the longer screen. It's not as wide as I thought and it fits nicely in one hand. I have large hands so some may find it a bit large to hold with one hand. I've only played with the Camera for a few minutes but I'll do some comparisons to the Pixel XL camera.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
besides color, i think everything else is what i looked for in a phone.
I love it!!
Compared to my S6 Edge+ I am just not feeling it
Came from S6E+ - everything is better (especially microsd and camera focus)
I really like the feel and look of this device. Reminds me of the days when the first iPhone 4 came out (yeah that feeling)
First phone in ages that got me realy exited, and after a week of usage,, still amazed!
LOVE IT !
I hate to say it but I'm actually not that much in love with the s7 edge. Coming from a note 5 I can't tell the upgrade. Maybe I'm just a note fanboy but something seems to be missing for me.
Coming from a Note 4, this thing feels great (but Note 4 was nice). This is an upgrade in everyway, except for no S pen, which i did not use too much. This phone should last me a while, lovin it.

Is it the S-Pen, maybe?
I am loving it. In fact I haven't felt this way about an Anrdroid Phone since the HTC EVO 4G back in 2010.
have the stealth black 935F version, really nice! the only thing I would change is the Samsung logo under the grill.
of course you will really love it! its a $870 phone
The only thing impressive about this phone is the battery life. Not feeling the love.
Coming from a Nexus 6p,it is a good phone. I would actually change and go with the regular s7 but I don't want to give up the 600mah in battery life. This battery is bigger than the 6p but it seems to last longer than the 6p.
I don't love it yet, but there's a definite attraction that could develop into something over time. Then of course after a while the excitement will fade and everything will just seem stale and mundane. Maybe I should get another phone to see on the side to keep things fresh.
I may be writing this prematurely, as mine is on order and should be here early next week. But I've been using the S6 for the past year, and the S7 edge seems to solve the few problems I had with the S6. I've read all the reviews I could find, and my needs for a larger battery and the SD card make this phone almost perfect.
Getting mine on the 18th,kinda feel excited seeing more positive. Yay.. hope i wouldn't get the lemon though.. lol

This is always my fear. I already have a iPhone 6S as my daily driver that gives me no problems and a Nexus 6 that I rarely use because the 6S is so much faster. I'm afraid that if I get the S7 and compare it to the 6S speed wise I'm just going to be disappointed with the purchase. To be honest I've played with the S7 like 4 times at different stores and every time my 6S feels faster but I miss Android and the S7 Edge looks so much better. Just today I almost walked out the door with a S7 Edge at Target only because I was told that I could stack a $100 upgrade giftcard with the $100 preorder giftcard and Gear VR. I guess they figured out that you can't stack the giftcards so I walked out the store empty handled. $200 in Target giftcards and Gear VR would have sealed the deal.
So now I wait to see the G5 (I want the IR blaster, on screen buttons) is any good but it all depends on price. Then you have the HTC 10 but I'm not holding my breath. If those disappoint it looks like iPhone 7 and maybe a Nexus towards year end. The current Nexus 6P is dropping now but I already have a Nexus 6.
I LOVE THIS PHONE. Even TouchWiz, I can't believe it. I actually love TW now.
Coming from the Note 4, the width of this Galaxy S7 Edge is near perfect. Still features a big beautiful display but it doesn't feel like you're palming a small tablet. On top of that it's a beautifully crafted device. Easy to pickup and a joy to hold in your hand. Not to mention it's fast. Everything is fast. Opening the camera is fast. Multitasking. No lag. The app drawer snaps open. The camera hardware / camera app and fingerprint scanner also score high marks in my book. Camera pro shooting mode is the camera app I've hoped Samsung would have given us for some time. I suppose better late than never. Fingerprint scanner is every bit as nice as Apple's. I hated having to swipe down on the button and I ruined my first prints because I still thought that was how it was done. I realized you just set your finger down and it reads it. Done. Whether it's to unlock the phone, input a password or use Samsung Pay it's easy the way it should be. Special shoutout to the guys who brought back the S5's expandable MicroSD and waterproof exterior design. Aside from root, this beast covers all my bases.
Re: Battery, I've spent the whole weekend fiddling with it and syncing all my data so I'm not even thinking about battery life, screen on time, etc. At the end of the week I'll have a better idea of how the battery fares. For now, way too early to call.

Note 8 on display at bestbuy (hint: its MASSIVE)

So its there, in the Samsung Experience. I have had every Note, now with s8 plus and i was STILL taken aback at how big it is. its fast though. Camera is nice and the new 'live' is a lot like the Mate 9 (which I think implements it better).
I really want to lay my hands on one!!!

Does it feel that much bigger than the s8 + bro? And how does it feel in hand compared to the s8 +?

it does feel bigger than s8 plus as its squarer. but that will mean less reflectivity than s8 plus. I RECKON IT WILL LOOK HUGE NEXT TO V30, IPHONE 8, MATE 10, PIXEL XL ALL WHICH WILL BE S8 SIZED.

Ha... Glad to help
I have a Note8 back cover and Note FE. The Note8 is about the same size as the Note FE when in a back cover. Not a massive increase over the Note 7/FE.
I played with one at best buy yesterday it didn't feel big to me. It felt smaller than I thought. Maybe because it's narrow

Best Buy
Probably similar to the S8+? I was expecting it to be huge in the hand before I bought the S8+ but it's not what you would expect since it's narrow.
Had my hands on one today at the Best Buy near SouthCenter Mall in Tukwilla, WA. Awesome device, feels MUCH better than the S7E
Edit: Its back in the Samsung area, not in the branded phone areas
thank you so much. I went to my BB and none. I'll try there next.
I compared the note 8 to my note 4 in my UAG case and they were close in size. I was pleasantly surprised.
My Ringke Fusion Note 8 case came yesterday so i decided to jam my note 5 in there to compare lol..
as you can see it's in there but it is a bit warped so the note 8 will be slightly less wide than the note 5 but quite a bit taller
I also put my S7 Edge in there too and there was plenty of room, enough for it to rattle side to side when shook
Stopped by Best Buy earlier today to check out the Note8. It looks so tall and dumb in photos, but in person it looks fantastic. After using the N8 for a few minutes, my Note5 feels like garbage. xD
Had it in hand yesterday. I don't see why people are complaining about a camera hump! If you want to see a big camera hump check out the iphone!
The camera seemed very fluid and processed pictures nearly instantly.
This reminds me of the Note7 vs. S7E. Instantly I was in love with how the camera software worked on the Note7.
In my opinion it feels very large in hand, but that could be because I am coming from a S8. Compared to the N7 I think the size is comparable. I like the camera and the display seems very sleek and bright (but I would expect nothing less from Samsung). I am not sure if the huge price tag is justified as it seems like a N7 with a dual camera. Still getting it though

Note 8 day 2 - gripes.

So,
I'm coming from a Note 4, the N8 does bear some getting used to.
It's a lot of pluses, so im going to only point out the negatives that have irked me.
- the front camera has a smaller field of view than the Note 4... that makes no sense, i would have expected to be wider if anything to take group selfies, unless theres a mode somewhere im not seeing.
- build. honestly, the Note 4 is build better, rear plastic door and all. My Note 4 suffered a charging failure and yet i was able to go on using it by simply swapping batteries.
- i may regret buying a phone without a replaceable battery. *EEK!!*
- having to write ona screen with a curved edge makes no sense. especially when utilizing the whole screen. it may get some taking used to but definitely makes no sense. would prefer a flat screen.
these are my gripes so far... especially the camera, i just dont get that one.
Better get over it, non-removable batteries seem to be the norm now.
they still make those?
i have not used a phone with a removeable battery in ages! i didnt even know phones were still being made with hot swappable/removable batteries...

Not being disrespectful, but since the Note 5 (sealed battery) and Note 7 (non flat screen) we have known that Samsung have changed the design path for the Note series. They only change was to add back SD card storage after the Note 5. Frankly, given that drop in prices of the Note 5, it may be a better option for Note 4 users who don't like the edge screen design. The screen quality of my Note 5 is amazing.

This bit I don't understand.
The fact your N4 suffered a charging failure doesn't really support your argument
But you genuinely believe N4 > N8 build quality?
I went from N4 to N7 and was blown away by the improvement. Am still waiting for my pre-ordered N8...

Yeah this took a little getting used to. And in my case, having spent the previous four years taking the p*ss out of iPhone owning friends for their not being able to replace batteries, it was humble pie time.
Fast charge really helps soften the blow.
im going along for the ride with this non removable battery thing.
This is my first and probably last. plonking down 1k for phone with obsolesce built it is crazy... i believe the removable battery/sd/user configurable phone will make a come back.
I wanted the best tech of the time... camera etc, but at the same time i also appreciate the value of my dollar. Samsung says the N8 battery will still hold 97% charge after 2 years.. new tech? i dont know and i find this hard to believe. time will tell. Phone is great, the non removable battery thing is what it is.
I would still be using my note 4, its plenty nice enough to do what i need it to do save poor camera performance in low light... and of course its never going to be as snappy as new tech, but it works just fine otherwise. but after several units failed on me, thought id upgrade to the latest and greatest. as i said, N8 is an awesome phone and has improved on the N4. faster performance, better cameras.... supposed to be better everything, not a front camera that takes a narrower picture than the previous one.
stylus on a curved screen makes no sense, Samsung should come out with one with a flat screen for power pen users.
and nobody has mentioned the field of view of the front camera is less than the Note 4. (i went from note 2 to 4 to 8, so i cant comment on the FOV of the front camera of the N5... maybe somebody here with a N5 can chime in?) its a small gripe for most, but for me... i loved the fact i could do a group selfie with my Note 4. am sure i will get used tot he n8... i just cant fathom why Samsung did this.
I-devices never worked for me. coming from Windows CE (how i loved those ipaqs and dopods... ), Android simply worked. shame MS killed of windows CE. MS phones werent all that either... been there and that.
now waiting for a device that will run full win 10 with a stylus and really great cameras!!
Non removable battery, was a trade for waterproofing, my note 5 is still going good, and s7e runs like a champ. Both have non removable batteries.

Hear, hear.
After the way Samsung UK dealt with the N7 recall, I'm just waiting to jump from samsung to any large phone with integrated stylus.
I haven't swapped batteries even in all of the S and Note series devices I've had since the Galaxy S3, even though I had the option. I could care less about swappable batteries.

You can go into the camera settings and change the front camera resolution to 16:9 6.0 m. You'll have a wider view, and same goes for the back camera.
Another option while in selfie mode, swipe the screen left to right. Here you have a mode called wide selfie, and others.

After the v30 opting for non removable battery, the removable battery at a flagship level is dead.
Theres a youtube video of someone showing how to replace the battery. I have done what that guy did on many phones. Never had a problem. Very easy.

Nope.
I've had Notes since the #2 and am getting the Note 8. In my opinion, it's by far the best phone but from a company that has treated its UK customers with contempt.
Hoping this time next year to see some competition that will mean I don't buy the Note 9...
Replaceable batteries is a thing of the past.
These are sealed devices essentially.
I like it personally. No more detachable backs!
That was one thing that always stood out when it came to iphone build quality feel vs. android.
The latter always felt cheap and creaky. The Note4 was the exception. It did feel solid for having a removable back.
If there is one gripe I have is the omission of the IR Blaster! Loved that feature.
Now, it would appear the only way that will come back is if Apple brings it to their lineup!
The UV sensor on the Note4 was neat too even if it wasn't very accurate.
I don't expect the (Note 8) to be the jump over the S8+ that the Note 7 was over the S7E. But we'll see.

Note 10 Plus First Impressions

I stopped by ATT Store yesterday to get an "In Hand" experience with the new NOTE 10. I thought I would share my thoughts and see if anyone else has played around with the new note 10 or 10 plus to get their input and thoughts about which phone they intend to buy.
My First Impression when looking at the New Note 10 Plus is that it is without question, the most beautiful PHone and Screen I have ever seen. Virtually no bezels on the screen and a very small "chin" - it gives it a very impressive look. It is literally ALL Screen - and the OLED Panel is absolutely beautiful.
Picking up the Note 10 Plus, I was surprised by a couple of things -
Extremely Thin - much thinner than my S10 Plus.
Very Comfortable to Hold - and despite the 6.8 inch screen, it doesn't seem that much larger in overall size than my S10 Plus. That really surprised me. I was afraid the phone would be too large to hold - too big to use comfortably - but that was not the case at all. It felt great in the hand and was very easy to use. I could do many things one handed very comfortably.
Holding my S10 Plus back to back with the New NOTE 10 Plus, the size difference is minimal - surprisingly less than you would think considering how much larger the screen is -
The Camera was awesome - though I honestly didn't have time to really see all that it does. Some of the new features will be fun to mess around with - and the quality is clearly there - another incredible camera. I am really looking forward to the new video editing ap I saw online somewhere - using the SPen for video editing - can't wait -
The S Pen felt good in the hand - nice and easy to use and hold - but I didn't try any of the new features - I will wait until I get my new Note before I play around with those features -
All in all am thoroughly impressed and can't wait to get my Note 10 Plus. I think Samsung has put together a very impressive phone. The 23rd, can't come soon in enough.
Have you had a chance to play around with a new Note 10 at ATT or Best Buy ? Your Thoughts?

No, I didn't get that sense at all. I had the note 9 prior to getting the S10 Plus and frankly, it felt similar to both the S10Plus and the NOte 9 - the biggest difference is the slimness of the phone is noticible - feels much thinner than both phones, but still solid and firm. Honestly, I was impressed. I expected it to feel too large and I didn't get that at all.
Interesting feedback thanks. I checked the specs, and the S10+ is just as thin as the Note 10+. Must be the bezel giving the illusion of being thinner.

Isn't that weird? It absolutely felt thinner - LOL - thinner or not - it is an amazing phone and I can't wait for it to be released.
What i was most impressed by was how much lighter the 10 plus is than my note 9, you can absolutely tell having one in each hand even if the difference is only a few grams in reality.
I checked out the new Note at the Microsoft store and my Note 9 felt like a honking big phone compared to the Note 10 (which is what I ordered). Though, I will be using a case so that will add some heft again. The screen looked incredibly crisp and beautiful. I wish I played around with it a bit more. I messed around with the camera, looking at the zoom and wide angle. I really can't wait to see how much more of an improvement it is. I love the Note 9 camera though the low light use was a bit middle of the road. Maybe will go there tomorrow on my lunch again, but next Friday cannot come soon enough!!!
Best Buy has both the N10 and the N10+ on display. I pre-ordered the N10+ for the higher resolution screen, MicroSD slot, and the depth seaning camera.
I compared it to my Note 9, and they are basically the same size phone, but the N10+ is all screen. Can't comment on weight or balance since it was tethered to the display.
What surprised me was how much I liked the smaller N10. It's so much smaller than my Note 9, but the screen is the same exact size. Well, I think a hair smaller, 6.3 vs 6.4, but you can't tell even side by side.
As much as I love huge screens, if Sammy had not of gimped the smaller N10, I would be seriously tempted to get it instead. And may end up buying one later anyway.
Bigger screen than the 9, smaller in-hand, what's not to like?

Anyone else return their S21?

This is the first phone I've ever returned in my life. The battery life is atrocious. There is no way on the unlocked US version to turn off 5G once you're connected to Verizon. With a full bar of 5G at my home with the S21 I was getting 57 megs on the speedtest app. I put the sim in my old phone (Note 10) and on 4G the identical test at the same location got 157 megs (Triple the speed of the crappy 5G).
The pictures felt crappy compared to the Note 10. The S21 was noticeably heavier than the Note 10 also. I looked it up and the larger Note 10 is 3 grams lighter but surprisingly it was very noticeable. Sooo, the Note 10 is made of glass, the S21 is made of plastic and the Note 10 is lighter... The S21 is also a mm thicker than the Note 10 but feels way thicker than that.
The side buttons were moved all to the right side on the S21 so if you're right handed and want to take a screenshot with the buttons, good luck. It's not easy. You have to use a gesture or switch to your left hand.
So to summarize:
1) Note 10 has larger screen and smaller battery but lasts way way way longer and is lighter.
2) The new 5G S21 is getting speeds 1/3 the speeds the Note 10 is getting on 4G at the same location on the same test.
I really wanted to like the S21, but it felt like a real downgrade.
I'm trying to return mine due to the poor camera but I'm yet to hear anything back from Samsung.
Wow. This camera is amazing, after having owned the utterly horrid S20 Ultra , and my battery lasts 1.5+ days with pretty good usage. Sorry you two aren't as happy w yours.
I didn't realize when I bought mine that the US version's bootloader can't be unlocked. Going to be returning it because of that.
OP, I feel your pain.
No SD card slot and I loathe the rounded corner display.
It be a downgrade from my 10+ in many ways.
Samsung, is that all you got?
I traded my S20+ for the S21 base for the $700 credit. I like the smaller screen little easier to use, but the screen definitely is not as nice. I did not miss the edge screen either.
I returned my S21 Ultra and picked up a Note 20 Ultra instead. The lack of SD card and no root yet killed it for me. The camera is a little better at zoom and macro shots on the S21 but that's about it. I got the Note and had the bootloader unlocked the next morning.
did you guys return all the accessories with the phone?

The phone just came out. How can you expect it to be rooted already?
Root wasn't the main reason but it did add to my decision. I ordered the phone not expecting root. I prefer the display and storage options on the Note and yes root. Plus with rumors of this being the last Note series along with the spen support on the 21 swayed me even more to return it. No regrets here at all.
Weighed up my options after using the S21 for 10 days or so.
Coming from an S10e, at first it felt really weird, that little bit of extra height felt huge!
Starting to warm to it and I really like the adaptive refresh rate, feels so much better than the S10e.
Main concern was the display, Uniformity etc, but the unit I have looks fairly good! took me a little by surprise - Few things I'll eventually get use to, color shift and brightness shift when holding it at certain angles, but thats always going to be the case with a bigger newer OLED Display.
So no, i'll be keeping it and sending the S10e for trade.
Returning my standard S21 due to an intermitent fault.
When people phone me they can't hear me when I answer.
Samsung UK is going to send a replacement once they receive my phone back.

Yeah, I expect to be able to root a device I get on day one. Dev friendly manufacturers are out there.
Yes, I returned mine. Also first time ever that I return a phone. The battery life makes it useless... Everything else is awesome I don't know what to buy now... I want a phone with great camera that's isn't bigger. Might end up with an iPhone, but really prefer Android
