JerryRig Torture Test - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

I just watched the video and it looks like the Note 8 holds up extremely well!
Good to know I can hack it up with razor blades and not worry. ?

Looks like it does hold up well. I still wouldn't try anything like that with my device.

Who walks around with their phone in their pocket along with a lighter and razor blades?
Just drop it on a tile floor already!

I personally, love his durability videos. I would like to see him drop the phone a couple of times at the end of the test.

This thing is huge and I'm loving it (TWSS)

Was a blackberry guy for years, switched to iphone 2 years ago, had a few Android tablets, and am on my first Android phone. I am in love!
Getting a lot of flack already on the size already but I can take it. The screen on this thing is gorgeous! After 2 days of playing around my wife's iphone seems ridiculously tiny...
Unsure of battery life for now because I can't freaking put it down!
Hopefully root will come relatively soon but Android kicks the crap out of iOS as is...

I went down to Verizon to play with one. I like it, but I think the price tag and lack of custom content is discouraging me at the moment. I need root for daily app backups and other things, so it's a hit to my list. I think I might go back tomorrow and see if they have a dummy unit I can try with my pockets. I love the screen but need something practical to carry as well. For now, my GNex will just have to suffice.

I do wear jeans of the tighter nature-nothing drastic- but I'm sure it'd be a fine fit. I'm just worried when I put a case on it. Might just be a tighter fit.

You ever thought of a case with a holster? Thats what I'm probably going to lean towards. My note II is naked as we speak didn't like the cases they had at VZW

I've never really had an aspiration for holsters, but I may consider it. I just don't like advertising to the world the phone I'm carrying around at the time. Are Note II cases carrier independent? No variations between them at all?

Haha I wear skinny jeans and it fits perfectly. No problems sticking out or anything. Its really not that much of a difference in my pocket from the S3

As far as I know there's no dimensional differences. I bought a holster from eBay today, and out should be here Thursday. I'll post pictures of it once I get it in.

Usually I don't use cases but I found 2 awesome deals on a nillkin and rearth case so from day 1 I've had a case on it and since their slim cases they both fit in my pocket nicely. The outline in my jeans isn't really too noticeable. It sticks out just as much as my S3 did.

Tired of magic and other unexplained phenomenon.

So today I was outside with the kids while they were running around the yard fighting eachother with sticks. My phone rang. I pulled it out of my pocket and dropped it on my porch. My otterbox defender protected my phone as advertised, but, upon impact my s pen shot out of my phone and over the side of the porch.
I immediately jumped over the side of the porch to retrieve it. (My knee still hurts) I haven't seen it since. I am convinced that when I dropped the phone it opened up a wormhole and sent my unsuspecting stylus to another dimension. I've been looking for it for 4 hours. I don't have tall grass or anything else for it to hide in. I've found all kinds of things on the side of my house but not the sizeable white and silver s pen. I even looked on the gutter drain to make sure it didn't stick in the side or something weird.
I wish there was an app that could help me. But alas, there is not.
Sad day... sad day indeed.

They're pretty damn expensive to replace too.
This might sound extreme and can and likely will backfire....but, maybe try and replicate the event by throwing one of the children over the side where the S pen launched. This way you may not only get the S pen back, but hopefully the child will remember important details of their travels and not just get back the important stylus but also help with advances in time travel.
Or they might just land on their head and call child protective services.

First day I had my otterbox on i dropped the phone in a restaurant with that non slip tile. Dropped it from waist height and it hit so hard it chipped the plastic part of the otterbox (under the silicone, but phone is fine.) However! My pen shot literally halfway across the restaurant. I'm pretty sure Samsung put emergency eject technology in our phones, much the same as jets. They can say it's for the safety of our pens, but at ~30 bucks a pop, we know better. Well played, Samsung.
Also, the post above me

Would a large fridge magnet on a stick pick up the stylus, a la metal detector?
Isn't there a setting that warns you when you accidently walk away from your stylus? How far away does it work? Could it be used as a Geiger counter?

That setting is based on detecting steps taken while the stylus is out. It doesn't pick up the pen itself.

Self Made Phone Cases

Hello people!
I was pretty frustrated with the fact that markets are only flooded with iPhone covers and devices like our L9 barely have any accessories available. I had a Galaxy Mini earlier and faced a similar challenge.
So I resorted to making covers myself!
You can check out the photos over here.
I could make a jacket type or a pouch type, with or without a stylus pocket, with or without camera and speaker slots. I could colour it the way you want and write whatever you want or leave it blank for you to do your own thing. The first few pictures show a one with a plastic pocket on the back to slide in a paper. The photograph in that model can be removed and replaced.
The main ingredient to the covers is newspaper. (Reuse!!)
The covers are decently tough even though they are made from newspapers. They have a layering of cardboard to give them extra strength and fevicol too gives them a lot of strength. The top covering is with a mixture of fevicol and water applied on tissue paper which also strengthens the whole thing.
I paint using acrylic colours because of two reasons--1) They are waterproof. They wont let the phone get wet unless you drench the whole thing. 2) That is what I have at home and I am too lazy to go to the market.
If somebody is interested in buying one, you could Email me at [email protected]
I only have the following phones and can only make covers for these.
Samsung Galaxy Mini
BlackBerry Curve 8900
LG Optimus L9
iPhone 5
P.S. Yes, its DBatraOriginals.
Putting #swag at the end discredited your whole post.

I didnt get the "grabby" part. And it is a bit sticky in the beginning, like when the paint is new. But in a couple of days, its very smooth. I am using one myself and i have absolutely no problems.

Buddy it s awful

Thing is there is actually a decent selection of cases for the L9 on eBay, you just have to do a little digging. Hell there are Nilkin cases for less than $10 and brand new from various eBay retailers (I ordered one myself last week). Or you can get the S-line cases for less than $4. All of them come with free shipping.
Just search "optimus l9 cases" and you get a lot of results. The main problem is that there aren't enough cases and acessories in local phone shops but it's much cheaper to get it online anyway. I'm never going to buy cases or screen protectors from regular stores again (i've wasted too much money unnecessarily), i'm sticking to online lol.

No offence but no one is gonna buy that.

That's some nice Tupperware!
You'd be better off carrying some Ziplock bags, you can place answer calls through them, unlike the plastic storage box. I just tested my Note 3 with a freezer bag; the touch screen worked fine and the call quality was great.

Walnut Case Mod

I've been meaning to do this for some time so with the wife away for the weekend I decided to give it a try.
I already had some walnut veneer in so soaked it for a while to begin bending it into shape. Some UHU and a few hours later. Plus a few beers. And here are the results. It's not perfect, unfortunately the veneer split slightly but it's better than i thought it would be.

How did you do the cut outs? Did you use a drill press or just freehand it with a wire saw?

Funnily enough, i tried painting it first. I used etch primer and did it matt black. It was ok but not great so I used acetone to take it off and tried a light fleck stone aerosol. It takes a long time to dry. I wasn't sure about it. Again, it was ok but when I used it, the fleck started to wear off around the edges. I could have protected it with a coat of spray matt varnish like I did with the walnut but I'd already decided to take it off.
