Anyone have issues with lag? When I select 1440p 60fps HDR, the video will start to slow down and begins to skip. I have even turned on performance mode and it still does it. I've rebooted my phone, made sure nothing intensive is running but no luck. It's not my internet connection either as I have 200Mbps download

Anyone tried this, should look nice:

Same the phone heats up and I seem to have fps drop.

Not sure I understand this YouTube HDR video thing...
HDR, in photos, is a high dynamic range from multiple exposures. So shadows are boosted, etc.
How can a video be HDR? So say it's a high dynamic range and colours and shadows are boosted. Okay. But what feature does YouTube "HDR" then apply together with our Note 8 screens that's so special as opposed to viewing it on any other device? Not quite sure I fully understand.

Is the video buffering when it skips? If so, are you on WiFi or LTE? If it's LTE, some carriers throttle you whenever you're streaming video.

Mine does the same thing. Doesn't matter if it's on Wi-Fi or LTE. 1080p HDR and 1440p HDR both lag. 1440p is a fast slideshow. Unwatchable atm. Until either YouTube or there is a patch it fittest work right. So far have confirmed outs on everyone phone I have tested from people at work. 4 including mine. Netflix hdr seems like outta working fine tho.

Edit 2: https://www.xda-developers.com/hdr-youtube-app-android-1080p-only/
Edit: It appears since then 1080p is the highest resolution for HDR videos. So they removed 1440p and 4K playback for HDR for now. Which is a good sign, it means they realised the problem, and removed it until they fix it. Hopefully it will be soon.
Original:
I have the same issue on my Xperia XZ Premium. I only now noticed youtube has HDR support, but playing it at 2160p the videos are very laggy, and slowed down and skip around to keep up with audio. Playing it at 1440p, still a problem but not as bad. At 1080p it's okay, but then again you lose 3 quarters of the resolution by going down to 1080p. What's the point of 4K HDR if it doesn't work? This is a YouTube app problem though. I made a bug report, hopefully they notice it and fix it.
These stats don't really show anything, they look normal, but it's 100% not normal, as it slows down significantly for no reason, it's not buffering or anything. It's like the app can't handle all the data.
Which is wierd as 2160p 60fps videos work fine. The problem is with HDR

Slow Motion Video

Sure is, except there is limitations on the res. i.e. no HD slow mo. Still cool
Going out to get some landscape shots in the mountains today. Panaorama inc!
I tried this feature inside my house. For some reason when I click record the screen goes a little darker and that's the way the video comes out as well.
Very cool never the less. Maybe ill try it tomorrow outside.

That's the way photography works... Slow motion is more frames per second, which translates to faster shutter speeds which allow less light into the sensor. Hence darker video unless the iso is boosted, then it gets too grainy... Good light will make a big difference...
It makes NO SENSE (no pun) for the phone to not have slow motion HD recording. None. Buddy of mine at work has the Resound, and we record 720p slow motion all the time. Checked the file's resolution, and it is full 720p. Why would a NEWER phone from the same manufacturer with better hardware and newer software... backpedal?
Pop Player (Speed-Control Video Player)
I highly recommend the free Pop Player app. I recently made a couple of reviews on it on YouTube.
This new video player allows the user to utilize speed-control. The slow-motion
and speeded-motion are extremely smooth too and audio syncs perfectly with
the video at any speed. It can definitely be useful for athletes and students.
Some people I know even use it to replay their golf swings in slow-motion
in order to improve their form.
This player plays MP4 files that contain H264 and AC codecs.

Why does a video player need all those permissions? Read phone state and identity, retrieve running apps, kill background processes, discover accounts, market billing service. It may all be legit, but I wasn't taking any chances. Deleted the app without even running it as soon as I saw the permissions. Should have noticed it before installing the app.

Audio lags behind Video stream

Not sure if it's just me, but when I'm watching video streams, anything from ESPN, YouTube, browser embedded videos, or HTC Media Streamer based content, Audio stream noticeably lags behind. About half a second actually.
Has anyone noticed this behavior, and what's the solution?
Thanks.
i've noticed it lags on the videos that you record. the audio is a little quicker than the video.
Yup that's exactly the case. Audio lags behind video in pretty much anything that's using HTC's native "Streaming Media Player". Massive and consistent lag.
Netfilx, WatchESPN, and similar third party apps don't lag as much though.

I'm talking anything, not only your camera content. If you get TubeMate and download any YouTube video onto your phone, and then play it with the default player, you'll notice a massive lag. Doesn't matter if HD or SD content. The phone is definitely NOT struggling to keep up.
The issue has to be within the actual OS settings.

interesting. wouldn't surprise me. do me a favor, go try MX Player. I've been using that on my Nexus 7 and love how it works. maybe that'll fix it? what does the stock app have that that doesn't, besides the ability to take a still shot picture?

Actually all the third party players seem to have the same issue. Used MX, VPlayer, Dice, BSPlayer, VLC.
This is clearly OS wide issue (at least on my unit). Has anyone experienced similar behavior on your DNA?

In YouTube app lag isn't as drastic, but if you download the video and then watch, we're talking over 250ms. I also restored recently, same issue.
Am I the only one having this issue?!
i haven't downloaded any videos on to this thing so i really can't say lol
so wow, I was just watching a youtube video and yeah... the audio was slower than the video. I bet it has to do with the full HD screen.. what else could it be? ugh pretty damn annoying. this sucks because I'm anal as hell when it comes to audio and video lag...

I haven't experienced any of these issues. Sounds like an issue with TubeMate. I mean, you said streaming from YouTube was ok, but downloaded videos had lag. That, to me, sounds like a problem with your download program.

Even when streaming within YouTube app, the lag is present, it's just not as evident. However, when playing any content loaded onto the device, the lag is north of 250ms which is major!
Another example is my subscription to Futubox which has two ways of delivering HD content, browser flash based, and m3u8 where HTC MEdia Streamer handles the content natively. Flash plays perfectly in sync (although drains more battery), but m3u8, or rtmp/rtsp lags terribly.
I've tried the same exact m3u8 stream on an iPad 3 and a PC, no lag whatsoever, even when AirPlayed.
I simply mentioned TubeMate because it's the easiest way to grab video content onto the storage. Besides that, TubeMate downloads whatever the digital source is, could never be the cause if the issue.
This is OS level issue, and it's real.
so it seems screen resolution is the culprit. btw guys I've reported this to htc, and sent the link for this thread. They're in contact with me. I suggest you report it too

Also the bitrate in the file still says 30mbps for 1080p. I changed mine to 40 and it works all right. But I don't understand why it's still taking video at 30 fps despite the file clearly saying 60.

Well you can record slow motion and in the gallery playback multipule speeds
When copyed to a pc, you can see it plays @120Fps and isn't in slow motion
It looks like the only way to slow it down on PC is to probably use video editing software, unless there's a way to do it in the gallery before copying it over

HDR Video

Hi everyone. I have owned the Tab S3 for several weeks now, and it's definitely a great tablet.
One thing I have not been able to do/confirm yet is playing HDR video.
I don't have an amazon prime video membership (I'm already paying enough for streaming services!), so that avenue is closed off. However, I've tried to follow the details this thread (intended for S8 phone users but also meant to work for the Tab S3) to get some HDR video playing, and as far as I can tell it's not working.
The S8 thread has some HDR videos that I've downloaded, and I've used the Samsung Video Library player app, but I don't get any confirmation that the videos are playing in HDR. Supposedly there's meant to be some "HDR" text that shows when the controls are visible and a HDR video is playing, but I get nothing. I've tried putting the videos in internal memory and on a (very fast) SD card, I've tried renaming the file extensions, I've tried changing the tablet display settings, I've tried downloading the video library app from the google play store and then the samsung app store... but as far as I know, the videos are not playing in HDR.
Part of the problem is probably the lack of Android video player apps that can play HDR, even the netflix app, which is pretty frustrating. But as far as I can tell, I should be able to play some HDR stuff with the instructions from the S8 thread.
Has anyone else been able to get this working? It's pretty frustrating having such a great screen and not being able to use it fully.
I can confirm your experiences on QF3 firmware. Files from the S8 thread works fine on S8 (and my LG E6 OLED tv). But no go on the Tab S3. Hopefully Samsung will enable it in a future firmware update...

On the Tab S3? Yes, the colors are washed out and plain wrong (worse than the same clip in SDR would be), which is normal when playing a 10bit or HDR file on a device without the proper codec/decoding capabilities.

That's interesting.
I have the BBC Planet Earth series on my tab and I thought the colors were great. These are 4K HDR episodes where one file is 14-15 gb.
But reading this thread has me wondering if I'm missing something...

Just noticed a thread in the android subreddit.
Supposedly there's a new update going out for the youtube app that is enabling S8 users to get HDR video playback. Hopefully the Tab S3 will get something similar!! Fingers crossed.
From a friend of Samsung college who works in tablet dev
HDR Works. In Netflix it's conspicuous but you will notice easily in Daredevil church scenes then download 4k x265 HDR file of the same epsiode. I did this with punisher. Yep torr me did yesh. The initial episode where he burns the jacket and also the sandwich scene with the water tank in rear. Although I did note it seemed to be 1080p in Netflix.
The file played on Samsung player but audio was 7.0 so not supported. So I used MX player but note this doesn't seem to support HDR but I couldn't see the difference. If they haven't stated HDR support specifically for devices which have capable displays (google mobile HDR premium devices) then it isn't there. Only the Samsung gallery will activate the HDR display and the video app from Galaxy Apps won't.
Amazon is another story it works wonders and if you turn the volume up with physical key and with no controls or options but only clean video playing you will see it turn greenish instead of regular blue... You can minimise as it plays and see your home screen as the HDR of display is active. This is a hardware solution and with Amazon being a firm partner to us it will come as no surprise but we won't provide support for hdr10+ support fully atleast until 2019.
Netflix now is a software HDR that means it doesn't activate the HDR display but setting up cinema mode in display settings will do the trick but the volume turn green test won't work here. Only the video will be HDR and if you do anything that is UI interaction thus HDR is immediately disabled by the AMOLED CINEMA setting.
This is how all of this works. But hey, Dolby Vision is costly no wonder only the s8 competitor had it and not the note 8 one as that guy's screen is P-OLED and blotchy

Boy have I got an answer for y'all love this one...
Ok so MX player has H.265 10bits see attached pic. I had this Spiderman movie (see attached for details). So I figured finally this had to work. Now this Spiderman Homecoming is a HDR file.
Previously I used to use MX player with 1080p 10bit and 12bit files obviously 12bit didn't work works on pc but I didn't know back then you'd need a 12 bit display aka Dolby Vision compatible basically.
Back to it then...
So look at this scene of spiderman in SW and HW+ it's astonishing, the difference.
I have not seen such differences with 1080p 10bit display but back then I didn't have tab s3 so no wonder I was foolin myslef haha.
So when Tom Holland aka Peter Parker is removing his clothes you can cleary see the stark contrast. I set 100 brightness and AMOLED CINEMA because apparently Adaptive Mode is really bad and I keep reading ya gotta do this. HDR or not color modes are always working on anything. So true HDR COLOR doesn't mean you can't set color modes. But the Cinema one probably has the Industry standard for HDR gamut like DCP3 for Photoshop and such.
That's it folks, enjoy knowing you're making the best use of the gorgeous display but it gotta be h265 HDR so probably a mkv.
Also the Samsung player from galaxy apps couldn't play 5.1 or 7.1 AC3 and such audio so I had to go for MX thankfully now I found out it's all GOOD. But still Amazon I think does its on thing coz when you increase volume the bar turns green instead of the blue for HDR videos. ( Also attached)
I took the spidey pic on OnePlus 5 with HDR ON, attached that too.
Thus CONCLUSIVE!
A side note the Colors of a HDR video on a non compatible display will look worse than a normal SDR video which means yeah when you try to play a HDR file it will look that washed out which makes it worse so don't bother playing HDR videos on non HDR devices!
By the way 50 shades darker Unrated UHD HDR is such a treat but unfortunately my external hard disc gave up right before I was about to take a pic of Christian taking Ana on his shoulder to the swimming pool at the end of the movie.
That scene truly shows HDR capabilities on my TAB S3.
When they are on the stairs it's like I'm there too. The feeling ya know if you claustrophobic of darkness you'll feel it. Dolby Vision would be better I suppose but HDR is still felt just not ya know perfect so yeah.
I hope the hard disk works again I'm Leaving it untouched to a day.
It made a click sound but it also does then when you unplug the wire after unmount so pray for me thanks and enjoy... God damn it my whole 1.5 TB of HDR collection was on that!
Ok so I tried something it was a flop apparently screen grab doesn't capture HDR I used AZ screen recorder.
Anyways have a look but by pics you can see it's HDR.
I'll add another one taken from a camera.
That should show the difference but why doesn't XDA app let me upload videos always go to network error...
And no it's not my network problem!
p.s. the golden pic is how it looks fell in love with her all over again all were HDR shots on OnePlus tab brightness was 100 percent the exposure is different of phone camera that's why they look different
Here you are. Hope you're able to discern the difference.
Also just noticed in Samsung player when I did max battery save and player a HDR video since auto rotate is off when you click on the rotate there is a split second of washed out color.
This goes to show that HDR hardware of the Screen gets off when video is not playing it's like turning the HDR on and off in windows 10 display settings.
Suffice it to say 4k will not display in 4k but 1440p for local files though it does look sharper than a native 1440p file. Amazon prime video only goes up to 1080p and so does netflix because it supports only HD, SUPERHD AND 4K. I rest my HDR case Tab S3 SCREEN is better than my KU6470 TV!

Thank you. So basically this is an example of false advertisement by Samsung, because there is no true HDR on Netflix on Samsung's mobile devices. I have a Galaxy S9 and can confirm that. HDR videos on Netflix look dark and dull.

Netflix HDR Playback issue

Hi all,
So far I am liking the phone, I am having an issue and I dont know if it's me or what. When I was regular shows/movies on Netflix (HD) it looks great, no issues what so ever. But when I view HDR shows the whole thing has a really bad brownish tint to it.
I tried to take a screen shot of it but it would not let me do that. I dont know if I did something wrong in the settings which in the display part it is set to Movies and the Enhanced Video Color is turned on as well.
If you need more information to help me fix this issue please me know.
Thanks in advance
Is anyone else having similar issues or is it just me?
I'm not signed up for Netflix 4k (which is the plan to get HDR), so there's no way I can test it.

Thank you for responding though. Hope someone else is able to test it
Have you tried an HDR video on YouTube? I tried one the other day, and it looked fantastic.

Yes I have. It looks great. Only problem I am having is HDR in the Netflix app. I talked to Netflix and they said they never head of the problem before. But videos everywhere else works and looks amazing
Oh man, forgot this phone played hdr videos. They are amazing! Don't have Netflix, but they are great on YouTube.

Is there a setting in the netflix app for HDR?
Watched some on Youtube labeled 4K HDR ... and they were off the charts perfect.

Just a standard and a high option and mine is set to high. I know, every other app like youtube and so on plays it perfect. May jusy be the Netflix app itself
Mine do not appear to play in HDR either and the video information shows HDR on the description. I wish it would show an HDR logo like my TV when it is playing in HDR. As far as youtube, what HDR resolution do you guys use? Mine is a bit choppy in 720p and skips frames badly at anything above.
I set my Youtube to 4K ... it was flawless over wifi ..
TMobile limits you to 480p to keep unlimited usage.
All, my Sony Xperia xz premium does indeed show HDR when I look up the Daredevil series. BTW it's a good to test the screen with. Anyway the V30 only shows HD so my feeling is that we are not watching HDR. I could be that Netflix hasn't authorized the V30 for HDR viewing as of yet. As I recall it took a bit for the XZP to get added to the white list.
Just got my V30 US998 and I noticed the same thing with HDR Netflix playback. It's similar to what I've seen with some early "HDR Compatible" TVs that are technically capable of receiving the signal, but not applying the appropriate processing or color mapping to make it look right. It could just be that Netflix needs to update the app to support the V30, or maybe it will be fixed with a future system update. Youtube does look great, but I'm not 100% sure that's playing in HDR properly either because there's no indication one way or another.
Question on the HDR youtube videos... I saw a screenshot somewhere (not v30) showing that you could actually choose HDR as a separate "quality setting". i.e. you'd have "480p, 720p, 1080p, 720pHDR, 1080pHDR" so on and so forth. My youtube doesn't show that. Is there any way to confirm that it's actually playing in HDR?
It looks out of this world, so it probably already is playing HDR, but just figured I'd check for sanity.
Same for me. HDR videos on Netflix are washed out. As if Netflix is rendering the video in a different colorspace. HD videos are fine.

Look on your phone, the LG help app. They mentioned the V30 does not have a certain codec or something for HDR playback ... ?

Tried looking for it but couldn't find the discussion you're talking about. Any chance LG is actively looking into this issue?

Nothing yet to solve the problem "HDR Playback" :fingers-crossed:
