Canadian Galaxy Note8 Discussion - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Keeping the waiting room uncluttered by those of us who have the phone already (suggested by mrnovanova)

Nice. So first impressions anyone? So far the rejection rate on the fingerprint scanner is a lot lower than it was on the s8+, my iris scanner also seems faster. Standby time seems good but it's still too early to say. I'm really loving this phone so far.

Three hours SOT and 52% to go!

Is it me or does Samsung Pay not work on the N8 in Canada? It works fine on my S7E, but when I install on N8 tells me not supported on my device?

Anyone buying insurance on the phone. I hear it's $400+ to replace these screens. Don't know if I should go with the carrier monthly option or Samsung Premium Care.

It is not you, it is Samsung. Apparently, it is coming "soon."

No Samsung Premium for Canada

I ordered mine on Sep 8, waited anxiously refreshing the "My Orders" page obsessively, waiting for "Starts Shipping September 15" to change. Well, the 15th came up and it changed to "Shipped" at around 5AM, and got to my door at 1PM via Purolator. Insanely quick, although it only came from Toronto and I live just a few cities away.
Phone has been pretty awesome so far. There is some slight bezel bleed in certain angles, but nothing compared to how bad it was on my Note 7.
Battery life is a little above average for all other phones I've ever had, I used to obsess over max usage but really don't care anymore. I am however, missing a rooted phone, and am considering selling this phone once I receive the promo stuff, and then ordering the F model.
One thing I did notice in comparison with the Note 5, is the S-Pen is much better to write/draw with because it has considerably more grip. When you first start using it, you won't feel it, but it will happen once the tip softens up a little bit. Also, with the S-Pen button having a hold-to-erase function, I found it pretty annoying that there isn't a clear indication as to which side the button is on. I can't really complain in that regard though lol.
I work in mobile and didn't have much time on my phone today, but throughout the 12hrs so far, I've gotten adequate usage. Most of it was light browsing, drawing, games, and then a couple hours of video watching. All while brightness was 70%, GPS, BT, LTE on, FHD resolution with a density of 530 (thats why everything is tiny). So this usage is definitely considered light.

Sorry, I meant to say Mobile Care. $170/yr, $130 deductible, covers accidental damage.

Looks like all Canadian units may be "Network Unlocked" out of the box. I bought mine from the Samsung Store and the employee noted that while my phone would still brand to the first SIM inserted, I would no longer need to input an Unlock Code to allow other SIM cards to be used. I tested this and he was right. The box also shows "NU" on the side of the box. I brought this up on RFD, and another member, who purchased their phone carrier locked from a Rogers store, advised they too had an "NU" model.
Looks like Samsung may have started selling their phones Network Unlocked in anticipation of the upcoming changes requiring all phones to be sold unlocked, with the Note 8 as the first model.

Thats good. Makes sense since as of December they have to be unlocked.

Did anyone receive any of the Bonus gifts with their Note 8? Is Samsung going to ship these separately?

You needed to register on Samsung during the pre-order period, and then register your device with Samsung after purchase. This will trigger Samsung to ship the gifts to you. Make sure your address is complete on your Samsung Account as well.

Mine still shows pending as well. I pre-registered after placing my preorder and logged in on my phone but still shows pending. Clicking the little "?" says it's pending review or something like that. I guess they verify the preorder with the retailer first?

First, impression for me is- this was an upgrade worthy device for me coming from N5 after N7 fiasco. However, had I bought N7 then I might have skipped this gen but coming from 2 year old tech I'm glad-I didn't buy S7Edge and got this instead.
For my personal usage. The battery is outstanding and 2.5 hours or so more SOT than N5.
I'm also using adhell-however , just to block facebook and what not.

Anyone buying he Exynos model in Canada?

Yes, its great that the phones are unlocked. I just found out (after spending an hour on the phone with Rogers) that if you purchase a phone directly from Samsung, Rogers will not activate WIFI calling. They told me some BS that the phone needs to be purchased from Rogers and is specially configured for VOLTE. Anyone have a code or know of a way to get this working. I'm not about to give Rogers more $$$.

I had a Bell S7 that I unlocked and changed to a Rogers CSC and got wifi calling and VOLTE working. Call Rogers, don't tell them where you bought a phone, just that you want to register the IMEI for your phone on account.

Would these T-Mobile Branded HTC ones work with T-Mobile? 64GB versions

I have been seeing a lot of these HTC One T-Mobile Branded phones unlocked on eBay in the last few days, I am wondering if these would work with T-Mobiles 1700 band but look at the description, it appears to be just a DE version but not sure why it says T-Mobile
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HTC-One-64G...1268845615?pt=Cell_Phones&hash=item3a80ca502f
The seller has 0 feedback, I would not trust this seller.

1. There is no 64gb Tmo phone. This is likely a dev edition.
2. The specs on the sale do not list AWS. Therefore this is not capable of HSPA+. It will work on TMO, but only on EDGE unless you live in a "refarmed" area or one of the very few LTE areas.
EDIT: The big question is where he got the box. I suspect this is not the box the phone would ship in - if there even is a phone. Zero feedback on this seller is suspicious.

Well, like I said, I been seeing more of these T-Mobile Unlocked Phones lately, I would buy one and then just open a case about deceiving and fraud but rather not go through the hassle.
I saw a few 32gb ones
It seems really likely that if the phone is in fact the T-Mobile version in the picture, the seller just posted the wrong specs with it. Maybe they're trying to mislead people too with the "64 GB" claim in the heading. But I see a lot of sellers on eBay who just copy and paste specs from somewhere and aren't really describing the specific phone that they have in their hands. A lot of sellers just don't know that much about what they're selling.
So if you get the phone that's in the picture, I would expect it to just by the regular T-Mobile variant with 32 GB. There's no magical eBay source of 64 GB T-Mobile HTC Ones that don't actually exist anywhere else.
And as another said, for something so expensive I would never buy from someone with zero feedback.
The frequency bands listed suggests that it's m7_u rather than any of the LTE variants, but like others said, the listing is just sketchy. I mean, there are two possibilities: the seller has posted a mismatched picture and description, or has unearthed a unique T-Mobile variant never seen anywhere else (and still has the description wrong). I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to guess which of those is more likely...
My friend bought one advertised as so but just the 32gb
I ll update when he gets its
update: my friend got the phone, it was advertised as UNlocked factory 32gb T-Mobile branded, worked with T-Mobile right away (4g and all ) didnt come with a sim card though so he had to cut his

The only way I know of is to insert a different SIM card from another carrier. Also, was the phone really sealed?
If you live in a "refarmed" area, the 4G icon is going to show up in the status bar regardless of if it is 1900 refarmed or HSPA+.
EDIT: Removed some "Unlock" text, since that referred to the bootloader, not SIM. Sorry for those who read it first!

That would be my guess, although the phones cost $575 or so even from TMO. How much did he pay?
My guess is they copied the typo originally found on the HTC site

He paid 650 shipped it arrived in less 3 days as well.
It's working great for him I had to throught to hell just to order mine
He went online saw it bought paid for it and was happy
I tried to order it online nope out of stock. Tried buying it from phone service went well then it was cancelled. I went to a T-Mobile store tried to order it from there. Nope they have me some bull**** excuse they couldnt until the manager tried and after a few days it was cancelled. Again.
Finally i called them again place and order and got it . Paid overnight came 2 days after.
He paid 50 bucks more than me but he didn't go through the hassle I went throught. And it's supposedly unlocked we have yet to tried that out. My brother in law has a att version. Going to see if we can today.
He loves his phone he paid more than us but overall please. I kinda have mixed feelings for if because of all the hassle I went through.

Delay in the UK

Absolutely ridiculous! I wonder what that means for the US. 2015? Smh...
Pre-order live in the UK now - here
Ships on the 7th Nov - just ordered and I have not even got a samsung Tab or Phone!
Should be fun trying to set it up with my Xperia
I saw the pre-order go up early this morning and was planning on paying for the black one this afternoon but they were sold out by the time I got around to paying for it at 12pm today so I ordered the white one.. lol
Hopefully no delays and should have one by Monday 10th.

Has not changed yet, but I noticed that the actual payment went through last night. Had been on hold until then.
Ordered a note 3 yesterday too - this is turning into a very expensive watch!
Just checked again and status has changed to "order processed" so hopefully next step would be "preparing for dispatch" tomorrow. I'll update here when I see any changes.

Out of interest why did you decide on the Note 3 instead of the 4? The difference in simfree price is £80 from Samsungs site or did you get the Note 3 on contract?

Got a grade A return from Smartfonestore for £300, almost got one a few months back - the Gear S forced the issue
The 3 is so good at that price, it didn't seem worth the extra £300 for a new 4

That's a great price for the Note 3. Mine's been an excellent performer up until a couple of weeks ago when I decided to sell it to make way for the Note 4.

Me too, I like big phones (have an Xperia Z ultra at the moment, so the note 3 is actually compact for me!), but they are not always great when you don't have somewhere to put them while you are out.
The Gear S is the first wearable device that ticks all the boxes for me, great screen, works as a mobile device independently and syncs to my phone when used as a companion device - brilliant.
Won't be for everyone, the price is a bit steep compared to other wearable devices, but it is a magnitude above them in usefulness and features too.
I am sure this will sell really well when the price drops - the pre-order sold out pretty quickly, even at rrp.
Hopefully we will get them on Friday, but they may only dispatch then?
O2 stores are getting them in on Friday, if stock is available in store Friday, I don't se why we shouldn't get ours then too?
Same here. Can't get along with small handsets. Much prefer something large and with some weight. Also had a Z Ultra which was great but ultimately had problems carrying it about.
When I had the Note 3 I also had the Zerolemon 10000mah battery (which would get me through 3-4 days of moderate to heavy use) plus rugged case and as this combination made the handset absolutely huge I purchased the Gear 1 so that most of the time when out I would rely on notifications coming through to the Gear and not have to take out the Note 3 - absolutely perfect!
You're right I'm also sure the Gear S will start selling once the price drops somewhat. It certainly has the best screen of all the wearables so far and once they become popular it will certainly hold its own against the competition.
The only one problem I may face with the Gear S is getting the screen marked/damaged as I'm always knocking my Gear 1 into something and it's ended up with a few blemishes on screen and on its bezel - and I'm usually extremely careful with my devices. So I may have to get some sort of screen protector or wear it facing me on the other side of my wrist!!!
I gave Samsung a call earlier and the rep stated that delivery will be due this Friday rather than shipping on that day so if they prepare to dispatch Thursday then delivery on release day is one the cards. We'll see...
Good news about delivery on Friday (Hopefully) I am always chipping away at my watches too! Going to have to remember to remove it when doing any 'real work' - be great if they do a tempered glass protector for it - there are some plastic ones from skinomi on Amazon (Gear S screen Tech Skin), but they don't launch until the 14th
Hoping the watch comes with a shipping screen guard - will try to use that as a template to cut a temporary one from a spare phone protector.

Just after I posted it went into "Preparing for dispatch". I tweeted Samsung UK, and they checked my order and confirmed it will go out today for delivery tomorrow! I have a Three PAYG SIM waiting to put into it .... Do any UK networks offer "personal users" multi-sim contracts? This is where two SIMs have the same phone number associated with them
Mines also showing "preparing for dispatch" so yes hopefully delivery tomorrow.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe any UK carriers offer multi-sim contracts whereas in the US some do.
I was also considering this option but as I currently have two contracts I may as well put my second sim into the Gear S.

Although the order status hasn't changed, I just got a text from ukmail saying it is intended for delivery tomorrow. For me UKMail is reliable (touch wood) in my area, but they send out a 1 hour timeslot that is totally and utterly wrong. Last time they said delivery at 3:30-4:30 and it turned up about 12:30!
Mine is preparing too now. My note has not arrived yet - tomorrow too hopefully
I read on another post that you can press the hardware button 25 times to activate the watch without the initial pairing to a Samsung device - might be doing that tomorrow.
*** BREAKING NEWS *** whilst typing this I got a text indicating it has been dispatched and on its way via UK Mail (YUSEN Logistics UK LTD)
Yep also just received a UKMail text..tracking shows booked and awaiting collection
Out for delivery now.....as I mentioned above though, do not rely on the 1 hour time slot given by UKMail. Mine says 4:30-5:30...I suspect it will be here considerably earlier in the day.
I am curious what others are doing for SIM cards then? I thought the best thing to do was to get a PAYG SIM installed, but most of the networks only give a decent pricing if you agree to a monthly rate? This seems counter to my thoughts on PAYG which used to be where you just topped up with credit and could use it over months/years if you wanted to. If you look at Giff Gaff, only monthly, O2, only monthly, Vodafone do both but the credit PAYG has rediculous data charges. EE only monthly. So for the moment I went with Three as they have the 3,2,1 PAYG price plan which is credit based. My main phone is Three and ideally I wanted a different network so I could make calls if the reception was marginal on one of them.

Mine is out for delivery too ETA between 2 & 3 and I have to leave for work at 1.30
I am with EE and they are doing an offer for a 2nd line - 2GB data, unlimited minutes, unlimited texts for £12.99 (12 month contract) Think there are better offers about, but this means I can manage all my mobile contracts online at the same place.
it's arrived!
Just got mine - very nice seriously late for work now though as I have a puncture too - karma getting me for delaying my trip to work!

Where can I find used GS5's that aren't TMo banned?

I've tried to grab two (G500T) now and both refuse to connect to T-Mobile unless I'm in their store. The reps figured it was a SIM issue and didn't bother to look up the IMEI. At home I tried my and my wife's sims from a rooted S3 and a rooted Core Prime and I get the same thing.... they won't attach to T-Mobile even though the other phones do.
So when I used TMo's IMEI tool both report as being overdue on accounts. So how are supposedly "Manufacturer refurbs" coming out with this flag? Is there any way to get these G500T's and know before purchase that the IMEI is clean and that it will just work on Tmo?
-gmolds
Am i missing something here... this Amazon post for the G900T even states that the device is only partially usable on TMo. Isn't that the Tmo variant? I mean the two I receieved booted to 4.4.2 or maybe 4.4.4 with the TMo graphinc and Jingle yet wouldn't grab a TMo tower outside of their store.
Add to that if I turned on WiFi calling I was recognized as the correct number and could send and receive calls/sms just fine.

There has been tons and tons of rebranded att devices people are selling as unlocked g900f and g900t devices as att has locked bootloader and nobody wants them. Could be your problem.
I wouldn't trust amazon nor eBay. Try swappa.com 100% and guaranteed to not be black listed

I'll look at swappa... but would AT&T locked ones root and take TMo kernels/ROMs becasue I was able to do exactly that and as stated, in the TMo store, it linked up instantly with full LTE (WiFi off) but outside of the stores reach it wouldn't connect. And again, the phone's IMEI according to TMo's lookup tool (both of them) had outstanding bills associated with them.
Isn't the Amazon link odd in that it is listed as a T but claims partial TMo functionality?
Or you could just buy straight from T-Mobile! I got two for $200 each. They're also eligible for T-Mobile's interest free credit system and come with a 90 day warranty which they will honour even if rooted.

Currently showing $250... a bit high for this model used IMO.
Worth a bit extra for some peace of mind, imo. As the T-Mobile rep I spoke to pointed out, the CPO devices go through an 80 point check which the new phones don't, at least not by TM. Both ours look brand new, and I'm guessing that both the glass & battery, and probably the outer cover too, were replaced. There's a difference between used & CPO. And I'm guessing $250 is less than you paid for the two you bought that you can't use outside the store??

Actually they were $140 apiece via Woot (Amazon subsidiary) and were listed as AT&T and T-Mobile friendly. One wouldn't charge and the other had the bad IMEI. I'd go as high as $200 I think. I'll keep an eye on Swappa and maybe call a TMo rep to see if they'll come down. I'm in no hurry... just getting ready for our next phones. I can't let Shiny get too far ahead or I'll miss out on all of his great work and their derivatives
As I said, when I bought ours they were $200, they'd previously been $250, so you may get lucky if you keep your eye on T-Mobile. I did their interest-free plan, so it's $8/month each, which seems like a hell of a deal now I've seen how good the phone is. Add a $10 wireless charging coil and you've got a phone that's indistinguishable from a $700 current model.

Those are TMo friendly phones, in that you can put a TMo SIM in them and they will work. However, that's not the same as a 900T. I bought a S5 through Woot back in January, and it was described as a 900T and it was a 900T.

It is/was (http://www.woot.com/offers/samsung-galaxy-s5-unlocked-16gb-sd-23) in fact a 900T. It reported as much. I've laid out pretty specifically what the problem was and got confirmation from TMo. The real problem is the resellers putting these phones out there as able to be used when the IMEI clearly reports as a phone in arrears on it's account.
If I had been willing to pay the account that the pay as you go phone had been bought on, it would have started working. TMo had taht IMEI blacklisted.
Maybe they're generic specs, but they don't list the AWS bands for T-Mobile, which is the usual problem with buying phones that may or may not be T-Mobile devices.
Readily admitting that I don't know what you're talking about but the fact that I connected to TMo with full bars when at the Tmo shop but dropped out as soon as I drove away and the fact that the phone is in Tmo's system seems to me to be a fairly clear indication that is was a proper model.
In any case.. got one off of swappa and watching for another in my price range and in a condition I will accept. Thanks all for the comments and pointers.
It's not an indication that it's a proper model. Speaking very generally, an AT&T phone will work on T-Mobile because they're both GSM/LTE phones. However, the GSM bands they use aren't identical. There's some overlap, but in some areas there are bands used on T-Mobile that AT&T phones can't use. What that means in practice is that in some places the AT&T phones won't get a signal on T-Mobile and may use 3G rather than LTE. AWS is GSM 1700/2100. It's the same reason why my T-Mobile phones work in the UK but the data over there is slow.
So in this case when the phone is reporting that knox hadn't been tripped and the phone info claimed to be a 900T is still may be an AT&T?
I just bought this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MF64PSK/ on Amazon. Clean IMEI and a 90 day money back guarantee. Looks brand new.

Awesome to hear that real ones are out there... seems hit or miss on Amazon. I have gotten full refunds from W00T and now have two "good" condition phones from swappa and am happy with their conditions and the prices paid.

I have really liked what I've purchased from Swappa too, but this time I went with Amazon. I read your post and was worried...I had to check the IMEI!

Anybody order / waiting for their Fully Immersive Gear VR experience?

I've read / seen reviews for the VR headset, AKG BT headphones and the 256gb memory card, all top notch. Looking forward to it. 6-8 weeks though :crying:

Oh wow! I'm sorry to hear that. Days not even over and they're already sold out. Wonder if that's a record of some kind? How many units did they have to offer you figure?
I have 2 gs8, so I bought 2 full packs. If you did the rebate on the Samsung shop app than it only takes 2 days free shipping
I get mine on Monday
To answer other question there was 50k acquirable bundles so all but 50k have been claimed I shoulda bought more as they didn't limit how many you could buy
2 sets was $213 USD equating to $800 retail savings
mine went in at about 11am est. hope i got one. still no email but says under review. wanted the whole pack
Mine arrives tuesday, I got my tracking number and everything
Coming on Tuesday as well. Ordered it at 12:30am Thursday morning via the website.
My wife ordered hers after me, but she has already gotten a tracking number and mine just says confirmed.
the $99 pack was sold out by the time i went to register....i was/am pissed about that so i had to quickly go for the free vr as i was afraid it was gonna sell out aswell.
So I lucked out then. I was able to get mine today.
No, not ordered it.
But was pleasantly surprised to find my s8+ works in my wife's s7 vr ?
Awesome!

That's good to hear. I believe I read somewhere that the controller is compatible with that model, and you'll be able to purchase it separately.

That's great news! Thanks for letting me know!
Wasn't sure if it would have been sold separately.
Probably going to still pick a game pad up for some of the more complex cames.
Not sure if it's just my old man eyes, but the screen door effect seems less then the s7 edge.
Still like having a bee keepers mask on tho ?
But i don't mind.
Ordered yesterday and it said will ship in 2 to 3 business days.
Ordered on the 19th and still just says confirmed.
Ordered mine today after 4 days of thinking I had accidentally been assigned the Gear VR only. Pleasantly surprised when I saw the email with the order link come in on my new Gear S2
now mine says order approved but i never got a link to pay?
Fully immersive experience
So, I registered, got approved and got a tracking number. It had said I could only get the headset because the other package had sold out. Then, I also got an email with the link to pay the $99 for the fully immersive and so I paid for the pack. The money has come out of my account and all. Wondering if I will get two headsets or what. Any ideas??

You'll either get both or get a refund, but refunds take forever with Samsung IME.

[DISCUSSION] Samsung Galaxy Note 8 UK thread

Discussion thread for UK prospective buyers!
Personally I'm looking to purchase on the Three network. Currently on a SIM only deal £15/m for 30GB of data, so its going to be a bit of a hit to my wallet, im sure!
I'm planning purchase direct from Samsung UK on the old CC. Hoping there's a 128gb version available to the UK.
Looking forward to the Unpacked event at 16:00 today
Notification email from Samsung UK during the presentation. Straight onto the order page and order completed at 4.42pm. How sad am I... (never ever queued outside an Apple store)

Odd I received no notification from them and usually they are always sending me them?
Not too impressed by the lack of blue colour at launch.
CarphoneWarehouse deals up now. This is theone id go for.
15GB data £43/m, £220 up front. Works out at £1253 over 24m
If I wanted to buy out right and stay on my current 30GB data £15/m contract, it would be £15/m, £870 upfront which would be £1275 over 24m.
OK I loose half my data, but I rarely go over 15GB anyway. Its with EE though, eughhhhh.
Free Dex on all pre orders as well
Pity the Orchid Grey isnt a release colour...
Why do Samsung always do this nonsense of not releasing the handsets in the more interesting colours.
By the way do they charge now or on dispatch?
whats the difference between the single sim and dual sim models, do they receive the updates on the same day? are there any potential custom rom issues with going for the dual sim?

Not sad at all! I ordered one from Carphone Warehouse at 17:03 - I am a big Note fan and since losing my Note 7 this year it's been a bit miserable. I can't wait to get the Note 8 now.
.
Seems like a big price hike over the Note 7. From memory over £100 more?
Waiting for the price to drop. £870 for 64gb. Lousy offer of a DeX that probably haven’t been selling that well. Otherwise it looks lovely. And I am not going to be a guinea pig and suffer if there’s an issue.

We’re not talking about iOS. I’d rather not have a freebie, and pay £799. The upcoming android flagships due in September and October are going to be very compelling.
As an another example the S8, S8+ and S8+ Dual sim are easily bought with 15% off the prices shown on Samsung’s website. And from official places. Hence why I’ll wait this time. A few weeks will save me a few quid and maybe we will see some larger storage Note 8 options.
But going back to iOS , the 7+ 128gb costs £819, £919 for the 256gb. So if Apple sell a 512gb option, plus allowing for price increases, a £1,000 plus model is very likely. Difference here is if you want iOS you have no other option.
If Samsung had offered 128gb at the £869 price, that would have been easier to swallow. But that’s life
Any chance UK ex owners of the Note 7 to get a discount on the Note 8?

I've sent this question to the 'President Office Escalations' contact who dealt with my Note7 complaint. Don't hold your breath as I expect the usual patronising response.
