OEM skin/software - Xiaomi Mi A1 Real Life Review

Are you comfortable in your own skin? Is your phone comfortable in its skin? Rate this thread to express how you deem the skin on the Xiaomi Mi A1. Missing some features like lift to check phone, night light, double tap to wake. Google phone is also not supported on play store which is weird.

Give it some time until Lineage or other Custom ROMs are released.

I even unlocked the bootloader and rooted the device and it still shows as certified in Google Play Store app, no such problems on my side.

October security patch is here

Updating October patch

Even though it's pure Android I cannot give it more than 3* because Google doesn't want to implement theming in stock Android and by default everything is too whitish and bright. I would love to get Android 4.4 blacks where notification and settings were all white text on black background.

5 days in and only one complaint

Have had the phone for 5 days now and love it,from the build and feel in hand to the software,came from a HTC which are quality built phones and this matches that and more .The FP scanner is a dream to use and the back is certainly the right place for it .My only complaint is that awful black controls bar at the bottom. Google make it transparent on the home screen and Google now ,yet even in there own apps like Gmail its still there,its present in 90% of my apps,that might be down to the app,but things like dolphin browser on full screen mode have it hidden away to pull up as needed.It looks so much better when not there and isn't taking up valuable screen space .Is there any reason why it can't be transparent in every app etc or at least move down when not in use.

Not an option I'm afraid I have certain aps that I need that will not work any anything other than stock ROMs , attached are dolphin browser pics both in full screen mode just on one I've swiped uo to get controls back
A couple more that show how much better it can be
Yea I agree. The controls make the screen real estate like a 5.5 screen because they are constantly there
I imagine pie controls will be coming.

Essentially gets rid of the navigation options at the bottom and instead you pull them up in the side only when necessary. You access them like the labs controls on the old aosp browser by running a finger on the side to cause then to pop out.
There are a few apps to do this - root not required.
Works on mm on the n5 (WHERE'S MY 6P GOOGLE!), as it's just a launcher should also work on the 6p
I plan on using LMT launcher. With root you should be able to run LMT and remove navigation bar as well
Wow I thought about this too with my 6P. When I was using my G3 prior I used Pie controls and removed the nav bar. Would love to use all of that 5.7" real estate the 6P has.
Stick this line at the bottom of your build.prop file in the system folder and nav bar is gone, "qemu.hw.mainkeys=1". Make sure you have pie already installed, I use pie control.

Can this be done without root,if not then its a no go for me,I have certain apps that will not work on rooted devices and I need to have those apps working

Thanks I'll give it a try
Thanks seems to work good,just have to remember to swipe up to get keyboard to show when required ,I wonder if there will be a fix for MM,or is it always like that.
Can't understand why Google would not have immersive as standard looks so much better
Lower the DPI in build.prop a bit and the nav bar will be smaller and you'll have more real estate on the screen.

Well yes and no, more YES then no, I'll try to explain.
You see, google has their stock android which they send directly from google servers to phones like Nexus and now Pixel models.
Then there is google one program, in which google send again directly from google servers new updates to phones for different kind of brands of phones out there, but not 100% same as pixels stock android (camera app for example).
And there is google go variant, which is another variant of stock android, but it is not send to phones directly from google, instead it is send to brands of phone, like for example nokia, and then nokia has the responsibility to send those new version of android or updates to phones themselves.
So, android one is 98% stock android, there are some exclusives which google keep for their premium phones, and some launcher design changes, but nothing serious.

Thank you very much for the infos, I proceeded to order the Mi A2!
Ok, so I recently updated to Pie and ugh, I wish I hadn't. The audio controls are horrible, you can only change multimedia volume and toggle between ring/silent/vibrate. For the rest you must go to the settings. Oh and the settings button, where did that go? Well now you have to make an additional swipe to get to it because its now hidden in quick toggles.
Now you can't change the WiFi/BT directly from quick toggles like before, you have to go to the settings....
The gestures are half assed as well imo. Either use the onscreen buttons or full gestures so that you don't have anything taking up the screen. Another thing that extremely annoys me is that you can't change the nav button layout, you have to install additional app and grant it permission through adb to move the back button to a more sensible right side. After Pie update the clock is located on left side as well without ability to switch it to the right side. I know that this is probably Googles fault but still, in the end its a problem of this phone too.
Another thing that annoyed me was that there wasn't even a music player on the phone :/

Pixel 3 Live Wallpapers APK

So the new Pixel 3 Live wallpapers are out. Everything about the phone is out so this is not a surprise anymore. What I find interesting is that the new wallpapers make us of the AOD too. particularly the Pixie wallpaper has a tiny person on AOD for some time.
Apparently it requires Android P upgrade and the Pixel Wallpapers app installed for this apk to work correctly. Works without issues on my P2XL with Pie not rooted.
Link to article:
https://www.mysmartprice.com/gear/google-pixel-3/
I was skeptical but this really does work, the live wallpapers show on AoD for a short time before going to just clock. Very nice find.
How safe is that APK you reckon?
The Pixel 3 LWPs seem to be working on my unrooted Pixel 2XL, but don't show the cool screen unlock animations that they show on my OnePlus 6 (running official Pie). The wallpapers all seem to work fine otherwise, but rarely with the unlocking animations on the Pixel - at least my device that is.
If it's not clear what I mean, basically on the OP6, these Pixel 3 LWPs each perform a different animation when I unlock the phone. All the 'drop in the ocean's WPs briefly shift from dark to light with a kinda electric wave effect; the bubble up WPs shift right to left from dark to light and the globe on the screen zooms out. The Bloom WPs also begin dark, followed by points of light glowing in thedark on the tips of each of the 'spikes' before the whole screen shifts to its light shade. On my Pixel 2XL, I simply go straight to the full LWP nearly event time I unlock it. Am I the only one with this issue? If not, I'm guessing the OP6's faster unlock may be what allows it to show the unlock animations.

I cannot absolutely guarantee the safety, I can only say that I have not experienced anything negative since I installed this.
But I doubt there would be anything malicious about this.

Wow that sounds quite interesting. I have observed that the Groove wallpaper does not react to music too on the P2XL.
Although I have noticed that the wallpapers behave differently if the phone is charging. You can see the wallpapers moving on the AOD when plugged in and just static when not charging.
Also the SF and NY wallpapers have a cool light effect on the AOD when charging!

Hum, OK, I was wondering if someone ever heard of that website before this leak.
I have installed the live wallpapers and they work fine with the screen on. But the big issue that the majority of them flicker when in AoD, it is specially noticeable with the Earth, Moon and New Horizons wallpapers. I don't see the unlock animations either.
If we downloaded the apk and aren't yet getting the full notifications, is it likely they'll be fully updated ota at some point - or is that likely to happen only with the preloaded Pixel 3?
What is the best version to install on the pixel 2xls?
The official APK seems to flicker and does not have the animations.
One of the ports or do they all have the same issues?

I did not try the OP6 version yet. But for on P2XL the official APK seems to not cause flicker at least for the moonshot wallpaper.
Also the animations are moody as in they work sometimes but not always.
I would suggest go for the official apk as it is most likely to cause least issues elsewhere in the system.
It only flicker's when always display is ON for the PIXEL 2 XL you need to turn it off and switch to tap to wake and or lift to wake and you won't have those flickering issues
It looks like November security patch finally fixed flickering! I don't remember what exactly version of the app I'm using, but it works.
And still no animation.

I think it's likely the screen brightness- the flickering is easier to reproduce in dark.
When we disable the always on display, the animation works amazingly well and it is quite pleasant, on the other hand, if the ambient display is on, it starts flickering.

Galaxy S10 LED Notification Replacement

I got tired of waiting for Samsung to issue an update to the Galaxy S10 series that uses the hole punch as the LED Notification light, so I made an app myself. It displays while the screen is OFF and you can customize the shape, size, and location of the notification LED. I am currently working on updating the app to support more features, customization options, and stabilization. Enjoy!
The latest update, v1.3, is currently rolling out. Please update the app when it is available for fixes to dismissing notifications, ignoring static notifications, and of course, charging! (charging customization features coming soon)
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anker.ledmeknow
Features currently in development:
- Charging style
-> Color
-> Animation
-> Shape, size, location
- App-specific customization
-> Enable/disable app
-> App-specific notification color
-> App-specific notification style (shape, size, location)
- General animation styles
-> (Solid blinking (current))
-> Timing customization (how often does it blink/spin/bounce, etc)
-> Solid always (will risk burn-in, but was requested)
-> Spinning
-> Bouncing
-> (etc)
- Deep-sleep mode -> may not work properly, will investigate
Bug fixes to be fixed:
- AOD clock displays after a couple minutes, even if "Hide AOD" is enabled
- Charging animation still displays when screen turns on
- LED shows even after dismissing notification
- Static notifications trigger LED

Unfortunately this is by design. I did everything I could to not have to wake the CPU, but because of the way Samsung handles the Always On Display, it was necessary. However, I am currently working on a feature that will NOT require the CPU to run in the background, but the LED notification light will have to be moved elsewhere on the screen. That may be a more suitable option for those who do not want to run the CPU, so long as they are ok with the LED not being around the punch hole.

Yes, that issue came to my attention earlier today via a Google Play rating. I believe it is caused by the pixel density on the device. I developed the application with the highest screen resolution set to WQHD+ 3040X1440. I will update the app with a screen density check which should solve this issue. I will also be adding a customization feature that lets you adjust the exact location of the light. Thank you for your feedback!
Wow! You did get this to work with aod!
None of the previous guys didnt (AOE, holey light).
Biig respect! But as mentioned the light is off even with WQHD+ on S10

Thanks for the support! No worries, when I get back to my personal computer I'm going to update this thread with a list of current in-development features (one of which is going to be fixing/customizing the location). Please let me know what other bugs you find or feature requests you have!

Activate the video optimizer!!!

You can activate it with the nova launcher activities, the path is settings / optimizer video. As standard it does not appear in the Samsung soft, also once you have achieved the shortcut you must activate it. All multimedia apps appear, Netflix, HBO, Amazon prime video, Mx player, Samsung video and some more like Youtube, Vanced etc. The improvement is remarkable, now it is seen with very rich colors, more contrast and brightness, It also corrects the excess of overexposed images that in my opinion detracted from the screen, now it is incredible to watch series and movies! For those of you who don't use nova launcher, I suppose that with an app like create shortcurts from the playstore it will also be possible to get it. Yeahhhhhh !!!!!
Thanks for this.
The name for this toggle is: hdreffectsettingsactivity
After using it takes you to your system settings with an on/off toggle. For unknown reason Samsung removed it from device settings, so we have to fiddle with 3rd party tools to reenable it. Please fix Samsung.
For whats its worth i think Mx player has this enabled by default everytime you watch hdr 10bit encoded video. Not 100% correct but when watching with mx player that nice and sharp image is still there.

Once you activate it you can delete nova launcher if you want, it will be fixed or it should. I do notice a clear improvement, the screen has more contrast and the colors are much more intense with the naked eye. Now we see 100% of what our amoled can give. If you do not perceive a change it is strange. My tablet is still on android 9 ... yours on android 10? Maybe that's the reason!
I'm on 10 but yes you're right I do see some improvement, it doesn't effect all apps only a few. Thanks again for the tip.

Me too. Nova and Action launcher does not show me the option. Running Lineage 18.1 Android 11.
I enabled it and tested it. It works by crancing up your screen brightness up a really really lot.
You should worry about screen burn in since the tablet is oled.
Hence I disabled it again.
If you open for example youtube app with this enabled the only thing it seems to do is putting whole screen including comment section into maximum brightness.
I understand Samsung why they don't give this option available to customers not understanding oled burn in.
I recommend you to disable it. In the future you might think back if you got burnin oled display.

Excuse me, but I must be very clear, you don't know what you're talking about. The video optimizer in our Tab S 5e is hidden in the software because Samsung did it thinking of offering us a worse screen and thus favor the Amoled Tab S 7+. Listening to you is stepping on eggs in a chicken coop xD. Activate the optimizer and enjoy the excellent amoled and calm screen, you will not get burned by using the optimizer (all the tabs have it, their phones also) By the way, my Tab S 8.4 from 2014 still has the screen in perfect condition review using high brightness as I like to watch series or movies ...

I'm on stock android 11.
Stock Android 11 here, I found the "hdreffectsettingsactivity" using this Nova Launcher method. Problem is that there isn't any buttons to toggle or options to select. It just displays a sentence about using Normal Screen brightness or something. Is this a dead end for Android 11? I could care less about 11. I was watching a series on Netflix with a lot of night/dark scenes and those scenes were straight up unwatchable.
(for anyone looking for this, it wasn't under "Optimizer Video," it was further down listed as one of the "Settings," read the fine print.)

Can you try YouTube app, search at YouTube for:
Real 4K HDR Dolby Test ultrahd movie for 4k
oled tv
Then when it starts playing go full screen. Does HDR automatically turn on?
It does on my galaxy s8 but only in full screen. The user interface is very bright too but when leaving full screen video in YouTube automatically disables again.
If it works than other applications can do the same.
I want to disable HDR since I didabled video optimizer, I still can't block YouTube going HDR in HDR movies.
So actually we have the opposite problem.
In your current situation normal video is not HDR.

I was watching a series on Netflix with a lot of night/dark scenes and those scenes were straight up unwatchable.
(for anyone looking for this, it wasn't under "Optimizer Video," it was further down listed as one of the "Settings," read the fine print.)

So android 11 is rubbish because you can't use the video optimizer and Netflix looks so bad? Have you managed to find a solution?
