Mate 10 Pro from Vodafone UK - Huawei Mate 10 Questions & Answers

Just picked up my mate 10 pro upgrade from Vodafone this morning. Came with a free Huawei Watch 2 which was a result
When you first power it up it detects an operator ota update which downloads apps but importantly it also enables WiFi calling.
My previous device was a mate 9 6gb version and this already feels more premium.

This confirms what I knew that Volte only works with carrier branded ROMS.

didn't realise Vodafone were selling the M10Pro. That could have only come up recently as it was only CPW and Three that were stocking them.

It was shown as coming soon on Vodafone for the last couple of weeks. They never mentioned it on social media tho and the first 1000 customers get a free Huawei watch 2 which is a bonus

Awesome. Hows the screen? Do you miss it not being 2k?

I've had so many phones including pixel, s8 plus, iPhone 8 plus, oneplus 5 etc.. this is the best screen and phone I've owned by a long shot. Everything seems to just work and battery is really good, camera awesome and no screen issues at all. Don't miss 2k at all, screens too small to notice the difference to me

Not so. All EU Mate 10 Pro' s have this built in. My Mate 10 Pro unbranded and unlocked from CPW, detected my 3 sim and changed the settings accordingly.

Ooh exciting. I wonder if it's the same for all UK carriers. Can you show a screenshot to enable it?

There’s no real screen shot. When the phone detects the sim, it provisions it and install or adds (not sure exactly what’s going on) the respective software needed to automatically do what’s needed. Under networks this is what I see
Also top left status bar normally shows “3 WiFi Calling”
This is the single sim version from Carphone Warehouse. I have the dual sim version coming from Amazon Germany later this week.

As the Mate 10 Pro (dual sim) is Dual VoLTE(4G calling) capable, then it would be really nice to see this tested in UK. Every provider in UK who has VoLTE support for P10, should be good with Mate 10 Pro also.

What's interesting is that the WiFi calling shortcut can't be found on the Vodafone update. It appears as a to-do option and once you've enabled it the option vanishes completely. As you can see tho it still works

I got mine from Carphonewarehouse (sim unlocked) but once I put the Three sim inside it downloaded a tonne of Three apps and even branded itself to them

How you getting on with the phone? I'm tempted to buy one!
edit: I've just pulled the trigger. Returned my Pixel 2 XL due to several issues.
Got the mate 10 Pro from Vodafone, with the smart watch, 32gb data and unlimited minutes and texts for £45 a month!!

Can't fault it at all. I had pre-ordered a pixel 2 XL but after reading about all the issues I cancelled it.
You won't be disappointed in it all.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro - Carphone Warehouse pre-order - Dual Sim or not?

Hi all, I'm looking at pre-ordering but seems its possible the UK only gets the single sim version. Can anyone confirm? Even carphone can't be 100% sure but they say that if theres a choice from the manufacturer, then Carphone Warehouse choose the non-dual sim version.
Dual sim is very important to me hence why I'm asking.. If anyone knows - do let me know.
I am wondering the exact same thing. All previous huawei phones they have sold have been single sim so I would assume this will be no different. According to GSMArena a single sim version does exist so chances are it's that one carphone will stock. It would be a shame though as their price is pretty good and includes a smartpen thing but single sim would be no good for me either
Called them again and they do say its single sim... :/
Yea price is great at £699 plus that free moleskin thingy..
For UK single sim only, and only titanium grey color
http://consumer.huawei.com/uk/phones/mate10-pro/specs/
If you can get someone to buy one for you from Germancy, France or Netherlands, you can get the dual sim version and in other colors options as well:
http://consumer.huawei.com/de/phones/mate10-pro/specs/
http://consumer.huawei.com/fr/phones/mate10-pro/specs/
http://consumer.huawei.com/nl/phones/mate10-pro/specs/
And in Germany you are getting the Moleskine pen as well:
http://www.huawei-promotion.de/denkt-mit/
To get the free moleskin in Germany , you need a German address for the gift to be posted to. Amazon Germany has the blue. Main issue is the plug isn’t UK standard and if you want fast charge then you’ll you need the UK one.

That's not true. Even if you get the official Huawei Fast charger in the box but it has the wrong pins for your country, just use a travel adapter. I got mine from China. It came with a 2 pin official fast charger and a 3pin UK adapter. Super Charging works fine with an adapter.

Also, fast chargers aren't exactly friendly to batteries, so if you do get a foreign charger just use a standard brick and help maintain your battery. Keep the 2 pin with UK adapter for when you really do need a fast charge.
Showing delivery tomorrow, 16th, instead of the 17th as previously advertised. That'd be great. I should have in my hands tomorrow the pro then.

Yup, I received my Pro on the 16th around 1pm, was fantastic to have it a day before advertised although it didn't include a nano SIM so I had to go hunting around town for one.
Absolutely love the phone.

UK firmware updates thread. BLA-L09

Just wanted to start a thread for UK owners of Mate 10 pro (normal mate 10 not available here), to see if the firmware updates are coming to certain carriers first.
Myself Im on O2 network and am still on original 115 firmware. What network and firmware is everyone else on?
Thread here mate, https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-10/help/bla-l09-8-0-0-124-c782-uk-t3728420
On version 124. Bought unlocked from cpw. Update arrived just over 2 weeks ago. Network is three.
O2 doesn't sell the Mate 10 so any updates will come directly from Huawei

They have but Huawei like other companies releases the updates in batches, I only had it the other day
I bought mine from CPW unlocked using it will Vodafone still no update but I have a three sim I will try and see if it works later. My Mate 9 is on December security patch and I am sure it will get January security patch soon too. But disappointing the mate 10 Pro isn't getting updates sooner. Huawei should be pushing the updates quicker or letting users who check manually trigger the update process every month as only the Techies will be doing that.

Bought mine from three ,didn't put the three sim in straight away and set phone up, 124 update came straight through the first time of checking.
Inserted the three sim which then installed all the bloat (wuntu, three likes)

Mate 10 pro was bought outright from CPW... no monthly contract....so should have been sim-free....
Just took my (three) sim out of my s8+ and plonked it into the mate 10 pro.

Completely agree, makes me wonder if it would be better to sell and get a Pixel 2 XL. At least the updates would be regular. Huawei need to up their game in this respect.
It annoys me that I'm running the October security patch and we are now into January with no sign of an update.

I too did look at the Pixel XL 2 (own the original pixel XL 128GB) but I can't get away from the single overwhelming fault of the pixel XL 2..... it is so utterly ugly.
I've played with it in the CPW shops (and all the screens have burn-in) and it looks awful.... I know, looks aren't everything, but google are asking flagship money for this !!!
The main positives I can see for the XL 2 is the camera gets great reviews, and the good software experience....but I am seriously impressed with the camera on the mate 10 pro [if only it would default to HDR being on !!!!] and that is comparing it to the likes of the S8+ and the pixel XL... and the software is pretty darn slick too...
Google seems to make great but flawed phones..

Agree with most of that. Due to work my phones go straight into a case, so looks are not so important to me.
Camera on both devices are very good, but pixel edges it I think due to night time shots.
Battery on Mate 10 pro will be better I think, which is the main reason I have stuck with the phone.
Just a few annoying glitches like the scrolling Widgets not working, if they could fix these problems and provide regular updates, it would be a great phone.

Yes this is beyond frustrating because my mate 9 is already on December security patch while my mate 10 Pro is on October and it's the New flagship. I am seriously considering getting the Pixel 2 XL as it's only £69 more now at CPW, but considering the hardware isn't really up to scratch that's what is putting me off. And I love the mate 10 Pro size fits in one hand

As far as I know, the Mate 10 has the most complete radio available on any 'phone - that is, it covers more bands than any other 'phone that's available today (or possibly ever).
One comment I'd make is to go for the ALP-AL00 and make sure the seller can install the ALP-L29 (international) firmware onto it before sending it to you. I know all of the sellers on AliExpress will do this as a matter of course, but I refuse to deal with Amazon so can't comment on their suppliers. The ALP-AL00 gives you the 6Gb of RAM and 128Gb of internal storage that the Mate 10 Pro has, but also gives you all the benefits of the "standard" Mate 10 (i.e., headphone socket, QHD 16:9 LCD display [no worries about OLED burn-in], front-mounted fingerprint scanner and support for additional storage [up to 256Gb MicroSD]).

does the M20P support hd voice and volte in calls ?

i had HD calls and volte in my Galaxy S9+ but i dont think it works on M20P
is it supported and if it is how do i enable it?
According to PDADB, the phone CAN do this...for both CN and Global versions 128/256:
http://phonedb.net/index.php?m=devi..._128gb_lya-lx9__lya-l29__lya-l0c__huawei_laya
I believe Huawei firmware HIDES the toggle of voLTE by default...but should work automatically when your device is connected over 4G LTE. My limited understanding is - by default it's already enabled, as its dependent on your location and carrier, too.
So, if you think it requires activating, which i don't think is the case, here's what P10 users did:
https://www.solvemix.com/index.php/android-smartphones/1778-huawei-p10-volte-making-calls-solved
If for whatever reason you think it's NOT activated or not working and want to visually SEE the toggle (and enable if disabled) then the following process requires ROOT access which you current'y don't have on your phone, unless you have a chinese ROM:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUfmiDBPczw&t=6s
There, you can use an app like ES File Explorer and add a line of code in the BUILD.PROP file...It worked perfectly fine on my P10+ and my "VoLTE Calls" setting now shows and was automatically switched to ON.
Google and YouTube are your friends dude.

If this response was in relation to my Optus question, thank you, but I'm not sure how that topic that refers to T-Mobile US relates Optus AU.... I have actually been following that thread and in my opinion M20Pro VoLTE won't work in US due to the carriers not supporting Mate 20 Pro full stop.
VoLTE is still not a defined standard hence carriers must enable specific devices for VoLTE and a device often must have carrier specific firmware on the phone for it to work. I assume VoLTE does work with Optus since they are offering the phone but hoping for confirmation.
To be more specific, I'm looking to purchase a Mate 20 Pro soon. I'd rather buy from JB Hi-Fi for the (hopefully) speedier firmware updates direct from Huawei but if VoLTE is confirmed working with Optus, and the only way to get VoLTE working is via purchasing the phone from Optus, then I would do that.

Hi ero,
This is just in response to some of the general questions in this thread.
What is Optus anyway?
Oh ok it's an Australian phone retailer.
Yeah that would be awesome if you could do that. Good luck man!!
Unless the Dual SIM has T-Mobile VoLTE, I'm screwed if I want the Mate 20 Pro though! lol Just sux. Part of me wants to say F it and just get it anyway, but not having access to like Band 12 sux. My area (Chicagoland) is about to get Band 71 as well from T-Mobile, and of course these phones don't have that either. FML! lol

I'm in Chicago on T-Mobile (via MintSim) and Volte is not currently working on my Mate 20 Pro. But I also have a P20 Pro (which like the Mate 20 Pro isn't sold or supported in the USA) and Volte works fine on that phone with the same sim card. I had a similar issue with the Mix 2 (Volte) and Mix 2S (no Volte) but on Xiaomi phones there is a way to force enable Volte by entering a dial code. There doesn't appear to be anything similar with Huawei, unfortunately.

Yeah I had verified last week that the P20 Pro has it on T-Mobile, but at this point I'd prefer to have the newer model, or just wait until the P30 Pro comes out next spring. Hopefully THAT has VoLTE AND Band 71 too!!!
I'm so tired of having to always check on this for unlocked phones. It just ends up limiting my options, which I really DON'T appreciate, at all.
Really? Wow. I WISH Sony and Huawei had that force enable code for VoLTE too. That would be awesome! I've noticed (and confirmed) that all 2018 locked phones from T-Mobile still have VoLTE, but it's been removed from the settings and "baked" in, so you can't turn it off. Of course you can still make a call and verify you have it as the call of course stays in 4G LTE the entire time. But yeah.........that's the story with the S9+ which my cousin has, the OnePlus 6T which I just bought from them. I was about to complain to T-Mobile lol but then I saw something on their site that explained all that.
I just really resent that I have to choose between the #1 camera phone and if I want great reception or not on my phone. It shouldn't be that way. Not fair at all. And I know it's all b/c our government thinks they and ZTE are spying on us. But I simply haven't seen enough proof to verify any of that.
No VoLTE support from Telstra in Australia either. I had it enabled on on my Pixel XL (stock unbranded firmware), which is the same sim card that is now in my Mate 20 Pro, but yeah no dice! Telstra has a list of mobiles that they currently support but it's only phones that they currently sell.
Apple iPhone 6 onwards, Apple Watch 3 onwards
Samsung Galaxy devices, S7 onwards, Note 5 onwards, A5 onwards
Google Pixel devices
LG devices G5 onwards
Telstra Signature Premium & Enhanced devices
Sony devices Xperia Z5 onwards
So I really have my doubts whether they will ever support Huawei phones. Which is really annoying because I was just starting to really love RCS messaging on my Pixel.

TMobile doesn't own MintSim. MintSim is a budget MVNO that pays for use of the TMobile network. I don't really think TMobile is blocking access to Volte for the Mate 20 Pro for political reasons either or they would have done the same thing to the P20 Pro. The fake controversy involving our president and Huawei happened before the Mate 10 came out and there's no question that it was politically motivated nonsense or Canada, the United Kingdom and all of Europe wouldn't allow Huawei phones to be sold by any carrier in the country who wants to offer them.
OnePlus and Blue are the only Chinese phone brands that have ever been caught putting spyware on phones sold in the United States. One Plus has been caught multiple times. Do you see any action being taken against either brand by the White House?
Volte compatibility with TMobile could be fixed in a software update from Huawei but since they are no longer selling their phones here I wouldn't count on it.

Oh ok. Yeah I don't know what the real story is. Maybe Huawei got the P20 Pro certified but decided not to do it for the Mate 20 Pro cuz it lost confidence in it selling well in the U.S.?
No I haven't seen any action. Only Huawei & ZTE have been named. And then I read that ZTE paid Trump $500 million as an investment in some new hotel resort he's opening up IN CHINA and then suddenly after that he decided they were no longer a threat. lol F'ing politics!!
Yeah I don't think the Mate 20 Pro will EVER get that update. lol So for now I'll happily keep my T-Mo OnePlus 6T with modded GCam app (aka same software used on the Pixel phones) and see what Huawei (and Sony) do in 2019.
This comparison vid is interesting.
To me, it seems that the Pixel 3 is better for daytime shots and tends to be seemingly more color accurate as well, while the Mate 20 Pro wins out for night shots. But Pixel 3 has a ****ty battery and I'm not big on its looks, and the Mate 20 Pro.............no VoLTE no access to Band 12 during calls, and also no Band 71. Such BS!!

Pixel phones have terrible build quality and lots of problems you mostly don't find out about unless you go to the official Google Pixel Support Site. They cost twice what they should at launch. I would steer clear of Pixel Phones or at least go to the official Google site and read owner comments. Owners are frequently shocked by the poor quality and many serious issues since they read nothing but fantastic things in places like XDA and Android Authority.
I learned this the hard way personally after having been a huge Nexus fan but the Pixel Phones feel much less premium than the Nexus phones in terms of build quality and design and list for twice as much.
The Pixel XL ran so hot Google support strongly suggested using it without a case and the phones suffered in very large numbers from permanent hardware failure dubbed the black screen of death which was comparable to the bootloop of death on the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.
XDA, Android Authority and Android Police have never written a single word about those problems.
The Pixel 2 had a problem from launch where taking pictures would crash the phone, requiring a reboot. XDA, Android Authority and Android Police didn't write about the problem until 8 months after launch--when Google officially acknowledged the issue and released a software fix.
The oleophobic screen coating on the Pixel 2XL display (which is what prevents oil smudges and difficult to clean fingerprints on smartphone displays) started to wear off after less than 6 months of use. I have never owned any phone where that ever happened and the Pixel 2XL is supposedly a $1000 premium phone.
Those are only a few examples.

Yeah I won't buy Pixel ever I think. I have a friend who bought the 3 XL and returned it b/c he said battery life was awful. GSM Arena confirmed this on at least the 3 (69 hours, ouch!).
I've heard some bad things about the Pixels, but WOW! You have really opened my eyes here jhs! Thank you for sharing this information.
I will just continue to use my new T-Mo 6T with GCam mod. I'm very happy with the phone overall! Next year I will very likely (though not def) upgrade to either the Huawei P30 Pro, or else any of the following are possible: Sony Xperia XZ4 Premium, Samsung S10+, maybe iPhone too, or else OnePlus 7. We shall see. Right now I'm siding towards the P30 Pro.
I WOULD'VE prob bought the Mate 20 Pro if it had T-Mo VoLTE (it doesn't, unlike older P20 Pro) and preferably also Band 71, which T-Mobile is about to deploy all over Chicagoland (where I live) by year's end.

Lol I've been with 3 for couple yrs and just moving to Vodafone now cause 3 signal and speeds are terrible compared to Vodafone and ee I just bought my 7t pro outright and got a cheaper SIM only
I guess the 7T Pro is sort of "meh", incremental as it is, and is probably bought by people who didn't buy the 7 Pro. What remains to be seen, is how many ROMs, tweaks and apps developed for the 7 Pro that will also work on the 7T Pro.
