I am about to assist in deploying a large amount of android device. The requirement is, that the devices (700+) need to be charged, configured and provisioned with the relevant applications for the end-users before delivery.
Device info:
Android 2.3.3
Samsung Galaxy SII
This is not windows mobile, so I am unsure if I can code/design a solution to avoid this enormous manual task.
Is it possible to code something for an sd-card that will be automatically triggered on insertion (as on WM)? This would then provision the device etc.
Is it possible to bypass the initial prompts - To my knowledge you will be prompted for entering the info for your google accounts?
If above is not possible, do I then need to create 700+ google accounts?

A suggestion I received from another forum, was that I could: Make an update.zip for apps .Copy on SD card .Boot in recovery . Apply update.zip.
Would this be a feasible way to go?

We just deployed 100 EVO 4G's prior to the deployment we sent a mass email requesting the users create their own Google account and email us the info so we could setup their new phone with email and corporate email access. It took awhile to setup 100 android devices but it went smooth.

You can use SureMDM from 42Gears for mass provisioning, application deployment and password policy enforcement on Android devices, including smartphones and tablets.
It does not require Google accounts. Install the agent directly on the devices and then use the web-based console to perform all of the above actions from one place. For e.g. you can push an apk on hundreds of devices with a single click.
On non-rooted phones installation of .apks will prompt the user to continue the action.

Similar situation here and am fielding any suggestions or ideas if things have changed in the last several months regarding deployment.
Scenerio:
Deploying approx 200 Asus Transformers in an educational setting
Wish List:
Setup all units using the same Google account, populate static name on the lockscreen, install 3 specific apps on each and the ability to identify each one individually on the market for individual app install by an "administrator".
Currently we are doing each unit manually and then having to wait a few minutes for the Market to populate the new unit and then changing the nickname to the bldg/room number. If we don't wait for the Market to refresh for the new device they will all show as Asus Transformer TF101 and obviously we will not know which device to send specific apps to when they are requested.
There just has to be a better way! I checked out SureMDM and it has a lot of features that we really don't need and it doesn't appear to accomplish what we do need.
Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated!
I know this is an old thread, but what about rooting and building a custom ROM for each unique device to let it do what you want? I'm thinking of doing something similar at the moment.

Probably would work although Google now has a way to streamline deployment:

I have just bought one for my dad, who needs my help quite frequently for basic functions. Is there an app out there, that I can use to see and control his screen. The only simple one I have come across is webkey, but that will only work for rooted tabs. Being remote, it is going to be a real challenge to root this, so just curious if anyone can point me to a good app for remotely managing the app. Thanks a lot.

Unless the stock rom has remote access backed in then you will not be able to do this without a rooted device. We use Bomgar where we work and before Android and iOS we used to remote to windows phones all the time. Now the system file on these are more locked down on stock. If you search bomgar and ios you will see that Bomgar has a patition out there for users to sign. Right now only providers can use there software to rmote to devices. Maybe this will chamge in the future but it depends onthe rom and who is selling the device.
Being a techincal security guru, I like the more locked down phones, but it does come at a cost. As these roms and devices mature more, I'm sure a dev will figure out a way to do this without compromising the security of the device.

I am freshmen android - thats is just converted from iOS to android to see what the hubbub was all about with my new samsung galaxy s4 - anyway there are a few things that abit concerning to me - I have the australia version of this phone and sadly the "Dock apps" at the bottom are locked and cannot be changed nor rearranged and so to remedy this I have decided to download a launcher (apex launcher) and one thing I noticed before i clicked install wass it requested access to pretty much everything on my phone including my personal details which leads me to my question:
- Does the launcher have access to ALL my personal details? If I install my banking app on this and start doing online banking, will they have access to this information such as my account numbers and everything? Same with facebook - will they have access to that information i.e my username and pw and so on?

Ever have a program ask for admin privledges to make changes to this computer on Windows? Same thing, except on Android that data the apps get access to is divided so that apps don't gein universal privlages to just access everything, they have to specify exactly what info they need.

Android is very paranoid, which is why I hate it. I can't even hack my own phone let alone someone elses. It would take some serious social engineering and redirection of web traffic to get them to download a malicious app. Alot of work unless you put them up like all those free apks that u usually have to pay for are probably some form of malware in em.
I am looking to move to an android phone and I need one that has the ability to have restricted accounts, similar to what was introduced on tablets with 4.2 or what iphones have, where you have a password protected way of enabling or disabling different applications. I have seen a program called applock on Android that attempted this, but it had a severe flaw that made it easy to bypass. Is anyone aware of a custom rom that enables this, or perhaps a modification to build.prop that would enable it?

Does it allow you to disable things like the play store and system browser? I am trying to get a good, child proofed phone.
I use restricted user profiles on the S3 to only allow my children to only access a restricted list of apps I download from the Play Store. It seems that any NEW apps that I download from the play store after the Oreo update do not show up in the list of apps (Settings > Cloud and accounts > Users, select a restricted user).
I did a factory reset this morning, and still no luck. Now only stock apps show up.
I chatted with Samsung this morning, and they want me to take it to the local walk-in Samsung clinic to have it looked at. This seems like a software issue - not a hardware issue. Perhaps Oreo changes the way this feature works - and it is an android issue not a Samsung one?
As a troubleshooting step, would any of you be willing to setup a restricted account on your S3, download a few play store apps and see if they show up to be able to enabled for the restricted account? No matter what I do, only the stock apps show up. It would be helpful to know if others have the problem as well.
I'm having the same problem, we're you able to find a solution? Only happened after the oreo update.

Thank you for reporting your experience with this to this thread. No solution as of yet. Now that I know someone else is having the same issue, I will try Samsung support again and let them know it is a problem with Oreo for all users - not just my tablet. Unfortunately, I'm guessing the best we can hope for is that it gets Samsung's attention to be included in the next update - which will likely be some time from now.
Update: I installed the Smart Tutor app from the Play Store which allowed a Samsung Support rep to see the issue. They agreed that it was not working as it should and opened issue ticket #2194272620. Hopefully this ticket will allow the issue to be noticed and fixed in a future update.

Thanks for the quick follow up! It's good that they finally acknowledged the issue at least.
Stumbled upon pretty much the same issue when I wanted to create a new restricted user account.
Before the update to Oreo; I had already a restricted account. That one has still the possibility to change the 'run' permission for apps. Not sure if it also works for new installed - I haven't tested that.

My experience was that new installed apps would not show up for the existing restricted accounts.
It will be interesting to see if the Tab S4 has this same problem
Hi all together!
Same problem here! This is a mandatory feature for me to share the tablet with my kids. Seems that the oreo update ****ed it up.
The bored Samsung support guy asked me to do a factory reset, and now, after 3 hours of configuration it still doesn't work.
Grrr !!! before the factory reset I had at least these apps working in the restricted profile I configured under android 7.
And ideas? Any update from Samsung ticket you opened?

No new ideas. I am USA but I noticed the korea build was a bit newer so I tried installing that. That didn't help but was interesting.
My understanding from the Samsung rep was that others could call and give the ticket number to get status and add a
"Me too" to it and that may help it get more attention

I am struggling as there appears to be no way to contact Google for a response other than the mounds of help websites that do not acknowledge or provide fixes. As a parent who is trying to restrict my children's use of tablet to choke off internet and inappropriate items, I am at a loss for now and my kids are whining that they cannot play on any new apps without bugging me to let them use my signon; totally unacceptable.,

Give restricted account permission to use chrome and search for the app you require as an apk. Then install from that.
99% of apps can be found as an apk so it works as a solution until android gets there acts together and sorts it out.

Old restricted accounts still have their previously enabled apps, new restricted accounts only get standard Google/Samsung apps.
New apps installed under Oreo from the Play Store do not show up in the app restrictions list.
Somehow, as restricted users also cannot use the Play Store directly, how are they supposed to get any app other than the standard ones?
This is a bug, not a feature.
If it should prevail, I will dump my Android devices and get Apple iOS phones/tablets for the rest of the family.
Same problem here too. I installed few apps after i upgraded my Galaxy Tab 10 A6 T580 to Oreo 8.1. They are not shown..so even resetted the device. Now all is gone on the redtricted users...
My kids also want to get the tablet back...

I talked to the Samsung Germany support on Thursday. They know about and acknowledged the problem, however, there is no cure. The technician I talked to hypothesized about the upcoming Android P (roll-out to Samsung devices is planned for 2019) may fix the issue.
The point is, restricted users may also not use the Play Store to install new apps, so in effect, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to get any apps except the standard stock apps into a restricted user's account. That does not make any sense at all.
Unless this is really intended (making the restricted account option useless), this looks like a gross oversight in QA on behalf of Samsung.
I'll see how this develops. My immediate solution is to use MobileFence to restrict my kids' accounts on mobiles and tablets (working with normal user accounts).

Any work around anyone can recommend? We use the tablets for a lot of lessons and set reading and the kids can't even access Kindle on it any more. I saw someone recommended Mobile Fence already, thanks.

Same here. I wonder why restricted user feature persists, it is useless now. A can assign only application installed before upgrade to Android 7.x, now on 8.1 and still no new app for assigning to restricted user.
