Playing Facebook and Instagram app videos pixelated -mate10 non pro - Huawei Mate 10 Questions & Answers

Hi, i have a mate 10 (non-pro).
I am experiencing this annoying pixelated videos on facebook app. Even if it's set on highest quality. I am only playing videos and not not uploading.
And the maximum video quality is only 640p. I tried reinstalling the app but still the same. Im not expriencing the issue on youtube app. I do not have this issue when playing same facebook video on other devices with facebook app.
Can you guys check if im the only one experiencing this or is there a workaround? Thanks
Tldr: all playing videos are pixelatedon facebook

its happen to me too and i don't find a solution , some video in Facebook on my mate 10 are pixelated Im on L29 8.0.0.119 version

Do you have data saver on in the phone settings?

I havent experienced this issue. What I am experiencing is video sounds dont stop even if you scroll away from the video or close facebook app. I had to close the app from the recent apps menu. I did find a workaround by turning off the option for automatically playing videos with sound. But as for the pixelated videos, havent occurred to me on my Mate 10 L29 8.0.0.119 version.

No, the data saver is not ON. Anyone got the issue and solved it? If you look closely it is pixelated (notice on round edges). Im disappoint with this phone. Cant even play decent facebook videos

i'm not using those apps, but on my mate 10 Pro, it's like netflix videos played from the app aren't in Full HD, even if all parameters are set for high quality and high bandwith

Have you found a solution?

Solution
Go to facebook setting turn on the upload photo hd and video hd then restart your phone... Hope this will help u guys.. I use mate 10 pro and my brother mate 10 have settled follow this step.

I would like to report that all streams on the Twitch app show up pixelated aswell... Like downscaled resolution. Mate 10 Pro BLA-L29 C432

I think I have the same issue with Mate 10 on 8.0.0.115 firmware (and no updates ). It happens only to low quality videos and not only in facebook, also in whatsapp. Seems like zooming/upscaling/smoothing of low-res videos doesn't work sometimes or in some apps.

This bug probably affects several devices with Android 8
(My Phone: Moto G4 Plus)

The problem is the way emui handles the resolution change. I have this problem with twitch, I think this happens because twitch plays the videos through his own video player and not use the stock libraries... So for the system (emui) the video is just part of the user interface and there for it gets upscaled to match the actual resolition, here are some examples and how to kind of fix it:
twitch VOD is 720p and the resolution set in display settings is QHD = Heavy Pixelation due to upscaling 720p to 1440p
VOD at 1080p + emui resolution QHD = Pixelation
VOD at 720p + emui resolution HD (720p) = No pixelation
VOD at 1080p + emui resolution FHD = No pixelation
So the way to fix it is to change the resolution of emui under display settings to match the video resolution you are watching in twitch or other similar apps.

i just bought p20 lite and all video streaming are pixelated...videos from facebook and youtube are blurry! any help?

P20 Pro Pixelated Instagram & Facebook
My new P20 Pro is also streaming pixelated videos in Instagram and Facebook. I've been looking around and there's no fix. I feel robbed!

YouTube resolution

Hello. Does anyone know why youtube resolution 2k is not available? The maximum resolution for me is 1080p.
It's related to the VP9 codec, I forced the codec on the YouTube Vanced app and it now plays content up to 4k however the tablet isn't really capable of smooth 4k playback, 1440p works fine.

1440p and 4K works fine for me in VP9. 1440p @ 60 fps stutters a lot though.
It does play in 1440p in app but just on a few selected videos for me. I have no idea tho why. It is strange.

Yeah I just checked and it's 60fps that stutters on mine, will/can this be fixed with software updates?

I'm gonna go with a big, fat maybe...? on this one. [email protected] is pretty demanding and in the stock YouTube app (i.e. without forcing VP9) [email protected] doesn't work reliably.

does 1440p work with other apps or if you record your own videos mate?
Smart Resolution
I noticed the same problem in a show unit. On my Huawei Mate 10 Settings, Display, Screen Resolution, there is an option called Smart Resolution. If I disable the option for smart resolution, the OS allows me to pick between HD (1280 x 720), FHD (1920 x 1080) and WQHD (2569 x 1440). Changing the resolution to WQHD will allow Youtube to play higher than 1080. However on the M5, there is just a toggle to enable / disable the smart resolution. See if that helps with the situation.

I think the issue here is that the Kirin 960 does not decode VP9 videos, which are what YouTube's premium video is encoded in (above 1080p). Hence the tablet can't view them, unless it does software decoding (which will kill the battery life)
I am trying to play 2k videos on youtube on my mediapad m5 8.4
I installed the youtube vanced but it still doesn't work and i still watch only FHD.
Could you please help me if there is a fix for this.
https://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/a52148d7 in video formats it says Vp9 codec, so I think it is supported.

Hmmm, also another issue I've found is that HEVC playback only works on the stock video app. VLC is unable to hardware decode it. Maybe a software update from Huawei can fix this.
Also the Asus Zenpad 3S10 had an issue like this, but 1440p was exposed, but it didn't hardware decode and so was laggy. I think there was a software update that fixed it. That was a MediaTek CPU though.
Kirin 960 cant decode VP9

Found that few secs ago too. Sorry for misinformation.
I am at utter disbelief and shock.
I did not imagine it won't play anything more than 1080!!!
I tried on YouTube vanced but it stutters during playback.
I am returning this device today.
Technology progresses, not regresses.
Just bought 2 mediapads today. 10.8.
Only 1980 on YouTube.
Only 1980 on Netflix.
Stutter on 4k videoes both streaming and having the file on the tablet.
No external utube apps Will play higher than 1980x1080.
My chinese chuwi hi9air will play 2K on YouTube.
And stream 4k no stress.
Netflix only 980x560. Fml.
Solution... Hm.. returning my new mediapads and keep my chinese.
---------- Post added at 01:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:54 AM ----------
You know... I bought this because i wanted a slightly bigger screen so i could enjoy even more the 2K resolution.. but since it doesn't show any 2k or 4k material without stuttering and having a croppy picture i dont see any reason to buy this.
I rather buy a bigger Chinese tablet with 2K than this.
It really breakes my heart to because i really wanted them...

Yes. Correct.
My Chuwi hi9air is a Chinese crap tablet that have no recognizion in the large market.
Yet they outperform the more than twice expensive Huawei mediapad.
Now im gonna order a chuwi hi 9 plus the 10.8 and already i know that tablet is gonna be better than Huawei.
Ps- everything is made china. Even the packaging of the fish you buy at the store is from china.
duplicated.

Thanks! I did the steps in your link and now I have 1440p60fps smooth in my M5 8.4". Battery drain is very noticeable, but it's not a problem for me.
I don't understand why Huawei block this resolution if it can manage it.

YouTube resolution

I know this is a 2k screen but YouTube will not allow the resolution 1080p is the highest anyone know why or a work around.?
It is some server sided crap. Try reinstalling the app or if that doesnt work use "youtube vanced" from xda. You could even set 4k there if you wanted without ads.
I can watch 1080p just fine with the normal youtube app, not sure about 1440p though
1080p max. Doesn't bother me, but not sure where the limitation comes from.
Just checked, it's the same on my Mate 10 Pro.
With youtube van Ed if you set it over 1080p you get problems at more than 30fps which is very stupid with this being a "mediapad" but in reality you can't tell too much difference on a 10 inch screen so it's not a deal breaker for me

videos on YouTube are encoded up to 1080p in H264 AVC format and higher resolutions are VP9 only. The M5 doesn't have a VP9 decoder, it can only decode H264 and H265 (odd cos these cost money to implement, but VP9 doesn't). So youtube falls back to H264 and plays that.
I think there is something wrong with the app itself.. Because if u play the same video in youtube on browser, it will show that u can play 2k with no problems.
I am facing the same problem and i cant find a way to fix it!!

hevc h265 10bit hdr files

i have a bunch of hdr 4k hevc 10bit 60fps demos for the tv .. i tried them on the pocophone internal media player (software miui version 9) and these demos played flawless with correct colors
i found an update for miui 10 .. so i updated and i wish i didnt .. now the hevc files are stuttering and has washed out colors
i installed 8.11.15 beta rom today and that fixed youtube hdr color issue but still hevc files played at internal media player stuttering
these files plays flawlessly on note 8 and xz2 which is sd 835 ???!!!!!
so any hints ?!!!! i also tried multiple 3rd party apps like vlc and mx player and they showed correct colors but they are stuttering
so any hints here ?! can i return to miui 9 without unlocking boot loader ?!!
do anyone have explaination for the stuttering on such strong cpu and gpu ?!

YouTube 4k 60fps hdr videos play nice on 1080p .
If u can link where 4k60fpshdr videos can be downloaded I can test. Small videos please
I am on 8.11.27 presently so can test if it has been fixed after 8.11.15

thanks sanjay
here is the demo
https://4kmedia.org/the-world-in-hdr-uhd-4k-demo/
please try it on file manager player and on mi video player
using the file manager media player the file plays well with minimal stutter at 8.11.15 but washed out colors .. before on miui 9 it worked flawlessly with correct colors
mi videos on the other hand play the video with correct colors but it feels like the file is played at 30 fps with lots of stutters not 60 fps
you can always compare this file to the hdr youtube video with the same name
there is larger files and bigger bit rates and they should work flawlessly but this file is the smallest in size
@mustafa811
Played the file in diff players
1. File manager played with washed out colours
2. MiVideo, photos, xplore video player and vlc all played the file with correct colours, not sure about the stutter though , video looked quite smooth.
Can't take screenshots or screenrecords of hdr videos so cant post anything.

yeah the stutter needs sharp eyes .. you can notice it in panning sequences like the one with the boats .. anyway thanks sanjay for the trial .. and wish they could fix it soon

there is definitely some dropped frames on mx player too lockhrt but since it is 60 fps many ppl will not notice if frame dropped to 30 as it is still watchable
just compare the smoothness of the video on file manager media player vs mx player and you will spot that there is lots of frames dropped
you can try this one .. you will see the cars at 1st driving smoothly at the file manager player in comparison to mx
https://4kmedia.org/sony-camping-in-nature-4k-demo/
also it is quite evident in this video at the 1st in the 1st 10 seconds where the dots splash just try it on both player to spot the difference ) file manager and mx player

I'll try new videos when I get home. I played the first clip. It's definitely 60fps in MX player, the smoothness is unmistakable. I tried in SW mode and it played very slowly with washed out colours.
Tried es file manager media player, it played at 60fps without washed out colours
Tried file manager player, it played at 60fps with washed out colours.
Are you sure you are using HW+ mode in MX and your phone isn't in power saver mode?
Playing a 60fps video at 30fps is actually difficult for phones as it may ask for more computing power. In case phone can't keep up with the 60fps video, we get dropped frames.

well thanks lockhry you participation is hugely appreciated .. i am on 8.11.15 right now and i am not using battery saver (it is not marked)
i defintely have dropped frames on mx player and it is using the hw codec .. the hw codec+ has much more dropped frames
i thought i almost tried all the 3rd party media players but i never thought if es file manager could have its own player
the es player is excellent it has a few dropped frames every while other than that it plays in 60 fps .. it is the best player right now that can play hevc files with minimal stuttering and correct colors
i am waiting for the alleged 8.11.29 update .. on 8.11.15 touch is a bit better than miui 10.0.6.0 but youtube hdr is not wotking correctly .. i eish there is a firmware that could address touch issues ,youtube hdr and hevc file playback
but i think now after trying lots official roms and updates there is a hardware problem with the touch and it is non fixable whatever they do .. writing with keyboard is not flawless as other phones
i use tempered glass i am thinking of removing it as a last resort
thanks again lockhrt for your contribution

Instagram Video Stutter (But not dropping frames)

I found that whenever I record a video on Instagram on my Redmi Note 9 Pro, the video would stutter for a bit. It is a popular fact that Instagram reduces video framerates on Android, but this is not what I am talking about. I am talking about a stutter, where the video pauses for a second then resumes. Here's a video describing this issue: https://youtu.be/fv7I6pgKvww. I also found that this stuttering also happens when scrolling through videos in the explore page: https://youtu.be/rjiGqyccG40/.
Fellow owners of this phone, do you experience this stutter? Or do you have an idea to solve this annoyance?

Had a question regarding 4K resolution on streaming/video apps

I have just recently migrated from iOS (iPhone 11 Pro) to Android 10 (Sony Xperia 5 II). I think Android is a much better choice for me as I feel I have more control.
Despite this I am having a minor issue which I need help with. On my iPhone 11 Pro, I was able to watch 4K videos, even with HDR turned on through the Youtube app. The resolution of the iPhone 11 Pro is closer to 1080p than anything else so I understand 4K is downscaled to the resolution of the phone. The problem I have is that with my new Sony Xperia 5 II I cannot seem to be able to enable 3840x2160/4K on any video on Youtube. I have tried watching a 4K video with HDR and without HDR but still suffer the same problem. I am new to android so I don't really know if this is common or its just my phone. The resolution of the Sony phone is also 1080p but I find it quite surprising it won't let me watch videos at 4K considering the iPhone 11 could.
I have tried updating the Youtube app and the firmware of the phone but nothing seems to change. I cannot uninstall Youtube from the phone either.
Is there any way this can be fixed?
The 4K video playback on YouTube is supported on those Android devices only that have a 4K display screen. Your Sony Xperia 5 II doesn't have such one.
But there is a simple workaround you can use to enable 4K video quality option on YouTube , if your phone's Android is rooted: change the resolution of the display to enable 4K video support - you do this by modifying the build.prop[/] file in the /system root directory.
