I wonder if the device will actually die after a year or two, 6.0.1 is a very stable version of android but it will eventually have an end, what do you guys think? should I be optimistic about this device? thanks

There is a team working to build oreo, and they already made it bootable, fixed wifi and more, but they are working like hackers, I mean they dont show up on XDA usually, nor they publish their test builds
Whats my point is: Yes, its possible to get Oreo on this device, have patience

Yes, there are someone who can. The thing is, our best devs doesn't have the device anymore, and the others doesn't have time or enough knowledge. This is the problem.

Sorry, i have been unable to work much since mid-semester exams are going on! Just wait for 4 more days... As soon as my exams are over, i and hopefully @mahir kukreja will again start working on RIL! '
And yea, about AOSP rom, even i want to see the stock android experience on our SGGQ! I will download the source and compile it by sunday! #DIbsonthis

Don't worry bro, the work that you have done already is awesome. If only we had more devs like you. We would have CM, AOSP and who knows what for our device!

worst case scenario, the device on that link is exactly the same as ours, the worst that could happen is building AOSP with newer drivers.
I've had an honor 7 for about a month now and i can't seem to find an actual custom ROM. Just "EMUI" based custom ROMs which is just the original ROM, but modded
Also possible to unlock bootloader so why aren't there any custom roms?

i miss stock
I think the main reason is that it's been very hard for devs to compile cm or aosp for the Kirin SOC. That coupled with issues with the kernel source code such as it being very different to other android sources have made it a real challenge for devs to do.
Not that it's impossible though, this will just take a long time with lots of effort.

-Wifi and Lte issues and drop
-metallic voice in calls
-no voice in cam record
-walpaper disappearing after reboot
-recent button freezing
... and so on
probably will release a first beta next Friday ... To be continued

The fact that you believe that you can actually accomplish this tells me that in no way can i reason you out of your feeble and inane endeavor. But I will say this, the 2 devices have absolutely zero hardware similarities, the exact opposite of which is a given requirement for "porting".

Ha I admit, I have got 2 offers for becoming the 'official maintainer' of a rom but i refused...I dont consider myself a developer and I like it this way better...i'm a maintainer for any rom that i choose ...i even wondered, to make a thread 'one stop shop' - come here and choose your favorite rom

as someone said recently, these kind of questions are really meaningless/pointless, is this rom caf, or aosp or cm based but ok....Omni is an amalgam of CAF and AOSP. I hope that fact will give you all quieter sleep tonight

I would love to see AOSPA on our G5 and I'm sure You too!?
It's pretty unique again and i've planned to support them with a new UI/DPI Switcher Interface which changes the Complete UI of Android to a desired UI like the Tablet One instead of the Phone UI (Like back in the old Days but even better). The Future is lookin bright for the new Team and supporting them right now as Maintainer or Developer is a great Chance to help them to make AOSPA great again.
I can't do that much atm. caused by my missing Internet Connection at Home, but i'm looking forward to that and i would love to see AOSPA from You Mate! I know You have the Skills and i do just hope that You'll find some Time and of course the Fun on it to bring that lovely OS to our Devices...
My Fingers are crossed, i don't want to push You to anything, but i do really think that You are the right Guy for this! :angel:
