Help me build my son's first gaming PC - PC Hardware General

His 8th birthday is coming up, and he's tired of consoles. He wants a PC. Our budget is about $650.
What would XDA do?

Check this out. The price includes keyboard, mouse, monitor and 2.1 speaker. If you don't need those, price can be reduced.

The most important two questions to ask when building a pc: what games are trying to be played, and are they trying to be played with all the bells and whistles? Usually, there's 3 questions, but you've already posted your budget.

Mouse, speakers, and a decent enough monitor for now. I may be able to get a decent keyboard for cheap from a friend, so mostly I'm only focused on the tower itself.

Any other preferences on size, upgrades? At that price point you may be able to find a great deal after the holidays on PCs off the shelf that are discounted to clear them out. I used to suggest going to older/used hardware and cleaning it up but I've largely gone away from that this year since there are few reasons not to buy a current gen motherboard. One of the mods found a steal at Costco that was essentially a $1100+ tower marked down. You're not going to beat that building your own in many cases - advantages to bulk purchases.
I'll put together one on PCPartPicker here in a little bit (At that price point you're best off going AMD Ryzen) but I'll also take a quick run around a few online shops and see if there's any standout deals that may offer you alternatives to consider.

Whynotboth.gif ? (Seriously, more than one option is hardly a bad thing to have here.)
Edit: Okay, here's my list. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2ZnqYr
No CD/DVD drive. Plenty of places to get Windows 10 for a decent price.
If you can squeeze any extra money put it into a 240GB+ SSD. Other than that this should handle anything at 1080p.

Speaking of OS, I was able to get a Win 7 key over the phone from MS a few years ago for 40, then upgraded to 10 for free. Wouldn't hurt to give them a call, either.
Ditto on the no cd/DVD drive. A majority of media consumption is through USB thumb drives, including OS installs. I haven't touched my DVD drive in some 4+ years, now.
I'm just getting settled into work for the day, but I'll see if can compile a pc part picker as well. =)

No need for a DVD drive. Internet and flash drives are superior, but I have a spare drive that I could use. I also have a 1TB HDD and 750GB HDD that I plan on using, so I could skip a HDD and budget for an SSD instead.
I'm going to dual boot Linux, but I haven't settled on a distro yet.

The pcpartpicker website has a forum also, you can get very sound advice for building a rig there, it's what they specialize in. XDA members are knowledgeable about PC and know what's going on, some of us extremely knowledgeable, but those guys over there live, eat and breathe PC the way XDA does with android and the various mobile devices.
Just my two cents.

Is that 650 CAD or US cause that will make a huge difference on what you can get.....

Still haven't pulled the trigger yet. Wish I had, though. Nvidia cards are selling like crazy and DDR4 RAM prices are ridiculous.

Should I buy a Touchpad for android?

considering buying a Kindle Fire or a touchpad.. a used one priced about the same.. which one should I choose??
Touchpad. Go for the bigger screen.
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
well the screen is not yet a problem to me
My sister-in-law recently bought a new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for only $399 during a sale. (including Amazon Prime free 2-day shipping and no tax)
That's only $150 more than the price of the average Touchpad these days. If I must buy a tablet with Android right now, I'd go with the Samsung as well. (average price about $450 right now)
Sure, I love my Touchpad, but only because I got lucky and bought it for under $100 during HP's firesale. It now runs ICS perfectly and I use it daily. No complaints.... but at $250? No, thank you...
Seriously, I'd go with the TP instead of the Fire - the Fire is nice, but it's still somewhat limited. Plus, Amazon's pulled some crap where they have apps specifically for the Fire, that are different than the rest of our Android apps, and they don't work as well as the standard apps do.
Plus, yes, then 9.7" size is quite nice, and the dual-boot is good for when you need certain features (Skype, a desktop browser, etc).
Op, Fire's 512mb of RAM is just NOT ENOUGH for an Android tablet. Damn, 512 is too low even for a phone! I think you should choose between B&N Nook Tablet and TP. Or, better wait for this $250 Tegra 3 tablet which one of manufactorers has promised on MWC.
well both tablet fit a flashaholic, if android runs on the TP flawlessly, guess I will go for it.

heh, I just got a G-tab for $299 refurb'd. it might as well be new though, because I can not tell that this thing has ever been used at all.
The plan was to sell the Touchpad now that I have the G-tab. But honestly, with the latest CM9 builds on the TP, it is really a great device. So I'm keeping both for a little bit longer to decide.
Anyway, Touchpad vs, Kindle Fire is a no-brainer. TP all day, any day of the week. The Fire is slower and has a lot less memory. My GF has one and it's great for what it is, but it can't compete with the TP. In fact, as much as she likes the KF, she told me she wants my TP if I get rid of it, so I'll probably just give it to her and install the kindle app on it.
Best advice I ever took was listening to my buddy who said "Go buy an HP Touchpad. For 100 bucks during the sale, can't go wrong."
Hell, this thing runs better than my laptop, and with Splashtop, I can even game from my desktop on my tablet. Or control my sound board. And my light board. And all other sorts of awesome things.
Yes because touchpad have best processeur dual cour (s3) with amazing price
Envoyé depuis mon HTC Pyramid avec Tapatalk
not quite right... spec-wize.. the KF has a OMAP4430 which is somewhat better than the APQ8060 (same as the msm8260 without modem..) in TP.. the OMAP is A9 and has shared 1MB L2 with dual channel DDR2 Ram, but the APQ is a modified A8 by Qualcomm and has two standalone 256KB L2 with single channel DDR2..

There is 90% of my reason. I was one click away from buying a Kindle Fire. The other 10% was faster processor and more RAM. I even made that choice before I knew the TouchPad ran Android. And I was very satisfied with the elegant, intuitive experience webOS brought. The fact its also arguably one of the top 3 android tablets even still today is just icing on the very delicious TouchPad cake. Then the fondant flourishes on top of the icing is the dirt cheap accessories like the TouchStone and HPs own case.
The TouchPad is undoubtedly the best gadget purchase I have made to date.

Nexus 7 (Google Tablet) Announced - No micro sd slot - Google TV also released

https://www.google.com/nexus/#/7
lack of micro sd really sucks since paying $50 for 8GB of extra space could get me a 64GB microsd...
I agree - plus a regular SD-slot would make it really useful for photographers and general data upload to the cloud. Oh well, I ponied up for the 16GB version anyway (actually two of them).

I'd party that extra 50 just to make it easier to load up apps and to have the extra storage for the so many things Android that still won't work properly with a SDHC card. Then still spend that $50 for a 64 GB SDXC card. But without it I doubt I'd buy either version of the tablet.

I thinking of using a micro usb to flash stick adapter to put my media content on for trips, the 16gb internal memory should hopefully be sufficient for a few apps and large games.
16GB is sufficient but barely

Google must have decided that cloud storage and streaming is the future or......., they are encouraging people to root there phones and use Wifi Tether:laugh:
8 & 16 would be great if it = exactly the amount of user accessable space available.
In reality we have 5.8xGB & 12.8xGB est storage.
This really hurts the gaming & app installs big-time. Music & Photos should be ok from the Cloud.
Wow....literally just was about to hit "Complete your purchase" when I actually started to do more research on it....
$230 (after tax S&H...) for an 8GB tablet w/ no MicroSDHC or MicroSDXC?? Definitely going to have to sleep on this one first.
But, my god, that thing is made by Asus, Nvidia Quad-Core, 4.1 Android Jelly Bean!
$230 is not bad....Somebody convince me to buy it!!
EDIT: But where oh where will I put my many episodes of Star Trek? MacGyver? Stargate SG-1? I can't access that content when I have no internet available at work....

Its a mental challenge really:
Just think, $230 total is just $20 shy of the 16GB at $250 but that in reality + shipping could be $280.
No sd card slot has prevented me from owning a nexus device.... That is a deal breaker for me! Once they get that, I'm onboard

amazon with their private marketplace and semi-forked os is damaging google sales.
this tablet its intended as a replacement for the kindle fire - if you were intrested in buying a kindle fire this is better in any possible way and cost the same.
if you wanted to buy a more generic tablet, this is expressly built so the other units remain actractive even if they cost more as google dont want to cannibalize its partners sales.
basically its a "**** you, amazon" gift from google.

Hear hear , I say, class 10 32gb Samsung micro sdhc is safe if I drop my phone in a toilet, if It gets to close to a high power magnet, its er....... I can't remember but the packaging made it out to be pretty much indestructible, and memory cards break on me all the time, all types and prices , and I gotta say its been awesome never a problem, so no micro sd, is a real let down, and I think I'm gonna swing towards the s3 and keep the EVO, as the missus is happy with her iPhone

When will these manufactures learn that expandable memory is a must? We don't always have access to WiFi to use the cloud. This greatly limits when and where we can use their products. Why do they seem hell bent on pushing the cloud on us. Yes its nice to have online storage but when your not near WiFi it makes it useless.

Building a developers desktop

Well, its about that time! I need a new desktop computer and i kinda want to build it myself, but since its primary function is going to be development i thought i should seek some advise from the best place i know of (and i have never built my own before) ! I am a computer science and engineering major at OSU majoring specifically in software development (ultimately want to work at Google if i ever get the opportunity, doing my best to try and set myself up for it) . I am still really early in my studies so i am not sure the best equipment to get.
That being said i am looking for some advise! I have about a $1500 budget to build my dream machine (including monitor and accessories)
1. what would you build and why?
2. what hardware/features would you include and why?
3. how would you have it set up and why?
4. if you feel so inclined build your dream machine and tell me why you chose what you chose?
If this thread is out of place i apologize but its primary use is going to be development (mostly android) with a lil bit of school and gaming in on the side. Considering its primary function, i figured this community would be the best place to ask for advise
Thanks everyone!
makes me sad that no one responded to this... i was really looking forward to a little actual developers advise on the new system.... oh well

You are asking the wrong question.
A developer machine need no performance whatsoever. A large screen and a really good keyboard (mechanical, expensive, but better than sex), and you'll be happy forever. The only stuff you'll need performance for is the gaming, and this is the wrong forum for that question.

Thats not right, imho. I am deving in Java and C, C# and more other languages for many years now and I agree that you need much space to raise your productivity, but I would advice you to get at least 8GB RAM. Exspecially when you are programming you will open many programs at a time, and this may be too much for computers with lower RAM (I speak from experience, I got 3GB)
Edit: and don't forget to hit thanks if I helped you
To answer your questions:
1. I would build a computer that runs both Windows 7 (Pro 64 bit) and Ubuntu Linux (11.10 64 bit for now because this will be used Android development, and 12.04 LTS has a lot of problems still left to be worked out regarding Android development). I would use Windows 7 to maximize program compatibility (Some programs used for Android development only run on windows) and because you said you wanted to play some games.
2. Hardware wise I would include a 23" 1080p Asus monitor that is great performance for the money, along with a Razar DeathAdder mouse and Razar BlackWidow keyboard both are high quality and the keyboard is mechanical meaning it should be a pleasure to use and last a long time.
3. Similar to my answer to question 1 I would have it set up to dual boot Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and Ubuntu Linux 11.10 64 bit, to maximize program compatibility while allowing you to easily compile Android from source code and do Android development best suited to Linux.
4. What I would build for the money:

The configuration focus's on a solid development platform (16GB RAM, Core i5 2500K), while allowing you to install Ubuntu on one of the 1.5TB hard drives and Windows 7 on the other 1.5TB hard drive. The Radeon HD 6870 should be perfect for when you want to game, and don't be fooled by the Cooler Master Case's price it is a very nice case for the money. The 800W Corsair power-supply should be more then enough power for this setup and should allow you to add another GPU in the future if you wanted to. Hopefully this will guide you in the right direction.
turn your life savings over these people:
http://www.falcon-nw.com/
I just ordered a new desktop for development, and went specifically for computing power, memory and hard drive space (those sources and temporary files are huge). On the other hand I didn't want to spend too much money, so I ordered an Intel i5 3570K with 8 GB memory and a SSD for the operating system and whatnot. As for the rest I'll use the parts from my old desktop.
Only thing I'm worried about is wether the PSU works and if Intel HD4000 graphics are supported in GNU/Linux (I didn't buy a GPU ).

Slow with 3GB? You must be running Windows!
But yes, you are of course right. Memory is good, and today it's so cheep, there's no point in anything less than 8GB. If running lots of bloated tools such as fancy IDEs, using virtualization for your test environments etc, it will consume memory. Still, compared with a gaming rig, the requirements for development are very modest - most of the time developing is about writing code, and then Notepad will be sufficient, but maybe not optimal. My own development machine is the one machine I most infrequent replace/upgrade, because I'm lazy and values not having to do that extra work more than the extra performance I don't need. But I'm also old school, writing most of my code in emacs, compiling command line using make etc.

I believe an SSD is the best spent money regarding the bang per bucks ratio, and if it's something development will benefit of, it's good I/O performance. But it must be your work disk of course, not only the operating system, unless it's only the boot time you want to accelerate. It also makes the machine more silent.

Thanks for the feedback. Too bad I didn't order a bigger SSD, but with 60GB I should still have enough room for /, /home and /temp and place all my miscellaneous files on regular drives. Might get a bit cramped, but I reckon it should work if my memory serves me right and things haven't changed too much in the years of my absence from a desktop computer.

I bought a refurbished Acer C720 Chromebook for ~$200. A VERY good deal for 4GB of RAM and in Intel i3 processor, as well as 10 hours of battery life. For another ~$150 you can get a bigger SSD for it. Throw in crouton and you've got an AMAZING laptop for cheap. This little Acer has totally replaced my P.O.S. HP as my daily driver.

My sister have a HP Chromebook 11
A Chromebook that's as cheap as it is excellent
CPU: 1.7GHz Samsung Exynos 5250 | Graphics: value | RAM: 2GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM |Screen: 11.6-inch diagonal HD LED-backlit IPS display (1366 x 768) | Storage: 16GB eMMC | Optical drive: none | Connectivity: 2x2 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth | Camera: 720p webcam |Weight: 2.3 pounds Dimensions: 0.69 in (H) x 11.69 in (W) x 7.56 in
The HP Chromebook 11 (starting at $279, £179, AU$399) is smooth and usable. While Chrome OS is limited by definition, between us growing more comfortable in web apps and those apps growing in power – and Chrome OS maturing – we're bumping into those limitations far less often.
This laptop is punchy enough to make the experience slick, cheap enough for anyone on a budget (or an impulse buy for the well-off), but something that still feels solid. It is a delight to own and use.
Apple and the other premium manufacturers should look at this little gem of a computer and applaud what has been achieved. The Chromebook 11 shows that it's possible to create a product with a little bit of the magic and joy you get from an Apple laptop without charging four figures for it.
My sis is happy. But for better performance she use online apps like on this websites rollapp.com/apps
and appcrawlr.com/ios-apps/best-apps-online-multiplayer

Not a bad system at all...
This may have been considered as "High End" when it was new but, when it comes to Technology in general, it has approximately approximately a 6 Month life-cycle.
This means that technology, in general, would technically have a newer generation (or two) released approximately 6 months +/- afterwards.
The system you had outlined is a very good one regarding the Processor, RAM and a few others but, so far the only item that sticks out is the size of the Hard Drive.
Nowadays the typical size of a Hard Drive is 1-1 1/2 TB. This is only because of the amount of space needed for software nowadays and even a 1 TB Hard Drive is fairly inexpensive/affordable.
The RAM of 2x8 GB (or 16 GB total) is a very good amount itself.
I hope that I had answered your question okay via text...
Good Luck!
