im using 128 gb samsung sd card and working great, for bigger size i think it will work.. also gsm arena claim up to 256 gb

I am thinking of buying redmi note 3, found a really good deal on 2 gb version. Dont care about RAM - but if a get a good U3 memory card - can I use it as internal memory in marshmallow based miui as in other m phones? Is it possible in CM?

Yes you can. Snapdragon RN4 Roms are compatible with all the snapdragon variants.
I can't understand if roms for Note 4 are compatible with 4x.
Probably not. Don't flash rom for other phone.
What version of the redmi note 4x do you have? The one with the snapdragon cpu or the one with the mediatek cpu?
If you have the version with the snapdragon one (mido), and you talking about flashing AOSP stock Roms, then there are some of them.
I had before the "redmi note 4x 3gb ram 32gb, snapdragon/mido version" and I could install all the Roms created for the "redmi note 4 Mido/snapdragon".

I see, you haven't bought it yet.
I would suggest you the 4gb ram, 64gb internal memory.

It's the same phone, so every ROM will work.
But do yourself a favor and buy the phone with 32GB internal storage.

none have it afaik but you are free to recompile the kernel and modify the firmware
Try your best to get the 4gb Ram/64gb Snapdragon global variant.
I got mine off AliExpress.
I use AOSP extended (pie/9) with Englezos kernel.
Brilliant experience thus far.
