Three Bluetooth issues - Sony Xperia X Questions & Answers

Hello. Picked up an Xperia X a couple months ago and have been generally happy with it, though I'm having some bluetooth issues ranging from annoying to infuriating that are preventing me from really enjoying this phone. Hope some of the gurus here can provide a some guidance on what I can do to fix or workaround these issues.
1. After some period of time listening to music/podcasts/whatever, the phone will automatically drop the volume by half and display the message:
Listening to sounds above the current volume level may permanently damage your hearing.
That's fine and dandy, but I'm controlling the volume through the bluetooth device, and the result is that it drops to a volume so low I can no longer hear it, and while it's a simple thing, it's infuriating every time it happens. Based on prior searches, I know this is a built-in "feature" and I know it's been part of the Xperia phones for a while, but is there any way to disable this behavior? I have my phone rooted, so root-level apps, Xposed modules, etc. are all on the table. This is my number one complaint with the phone, so would really appreciate any help here. Note: to clarify, I want to stop this *behavior*. I've found other discussions about killing similar warning messages, but nothing about how to prevent it from actually lowering the volume.
2. When connected to my car through bluetooth, I don't get metadata from the phone (AVRCP?). Bluetooth problems in general appear to be widely reported for Android 7.1.x on this phone, but most people seem to complain about being unable to pair their device at all. I can pair it fine, but I don't get metadata. However, prior to upgrading to 7.1 (while still on 6.0) metadata worked, and when running OmniROM 7.1.2 on this phone metadata also worked. So, it seems to be a problem with this particular version of the stock ROM for this phone.
Any ideas on how I can fix that? Again, maybe an xposed module or something that I've overlooked? or could I maybe swap out the bluetooth stack from OmniROM, which works fine? This is a much lesser annoyance than the above, but still interested in any suggestions.
3. Finally, this is a more subjective issue, but does anyone else have problems with bluetooth performance in general with this phone? On my last two phones, I kept my phone in my left pocket and played through a bluetooth headphones with the receiver on my right ear with generally no problems, other than the occasional hiccups that seem to affect every android device (at least every one I've used). With the Xperia X, however, trying to play with the phone in my left pocket skips so horribly that it's completely unlistenable. Moving it to my right pocket helps somewhat, but it's still flaky - turning my head sideways such that the receiver is over my shoulder causes skipping. I have to move my phone up into my jacket pocket in order for it to play (mostly) reliably.
Does anyone else have problems like this? Again, I never hard this problem with either of my two previous phones on the same set of headphones (have similar, but not as severe, issues in my car as well). I *did* have this same problem with OmniROM as well, and I have the problem with and without a case, so it seems hardware related, but if the bluetooth hardware was truly this bad I would expect to have seen more discussion about it. So, just wondering - is this just me, or do other people have this problem as well? I know it's unlikely, but any suggestions to improve this? Ie., possible to increase the bluetooth transmitter power or something like that?
Thanks, all. Sorry this turns out a little long, just wanted to properly explain. Looking forward to any suggestions.

I can confirm that on my XX Bluetooth signal is also weak, I have same issues at least with two Sony headsets (SBH60 and SBH80). Also with Bluetooth AptX receiver for my (home) audio it is quite similar, just walking behind corner from direct visibility and audio is choppy...

1. This error message appears very rarely, for me, not every 30 minutes. I have this phone for 1 year now and I encountered the warning 5-6 times.
2. Idk
3. True, Im pretty dissapointed by the bluetooth strenght. Also, the WiFi is super weak too. Very dissapointing.

This also happens on the Tablet Z, where I have external speakers connected. Nannytech run amok.

Replying to old thread, but got just new bluetooth headset and noticed also very poor bluetooth performance on my xperia x. Distance between phone and headset cant exceed half a meter, or music starts stopping and skipping. Even with my ancient backup phone, Iphone 4s, distance can be meters... Very poor desing from Sony.

Bluetooth in general eventually drove me away. Only got midling performance at best, but whatever chip or driver or whatever they were using also had performance issues with custom ROMs. Never found a single ROM not based on stock that worked 100% correctly with bluetooth, and given podcasts and music is probably about 90% of what I use my phone for (combined with Sony ending even security updates long ago at this point), that was a pretty big problem for me.
Ended up buying a Pixel 3a to replace it. My main concern about the 3a is that I wish it was a little bit smaller (really my concern with almost every well-spec'ed phone these days), but the bluetooth in that phone is solid. Longer range and better strength than any other bluetooth device I've ever used. Extremely happy with it.

LG Tone+ Bluetooth headset - intermittent drops

Not sure if it's my phone or my headset. Occasionally while talking the headset will tell me it's out of range and then reconnect (the phone is usually in my pocket or hand). I'll miss about 10-15sec of the conversation. Sometimes it'll do it repeatedly other times not as often. I don't have another Bluetooth headset to test with. I've had the headset about 8mths and this started happening about a month ago.
Any ideas?

I have the exact same headset and I have never had that problem. I'm on the slimkat weekly 2560. It doesn't even start cutting out until I'm half way across my house.

K. Thanks. I'll look into a warranty claim.
Anyone know how/if different radios could affect this?

Hi,
I would like to share an interesting observation I have also made about Bluetooth disconnections with phone in the pocket.
1) When the phone is in my shirt pocket, and I turn my head to its extreme, sometimes (not always), the connectivity gets disrupted. but unlike your experience, this is only for a secong, and as soon as I turn my head back to normal viewing angles, its ok.
2) with phone in trouser pocket, if I place my hand over the phone same disconet happens depending on which part of the phone gets covered.
Based on these two observations, and knowing that Bluetooth is a short range , line of sight connection, there is something in the materials your clothes include that probably inhibit the line of sight connectivity.
Hope that helps in understanding the momentary loss of BT connection, but not for a 15 seconds like you seem to be experiencing.

Bluetooth car audio disconnect and connect in cycle
I am experiencing similar issue with bluetooth audio calls in my car. I tried two separate KitKat roms (PSX & Beanstalk 4.4.225) and in both versions, phone bluetooth disconnected and reconnected, it seems like 20 seconds cycle. It would drop for about 5 seconds. I noticed the first it dropped was when the screen turned off. It is impossible to carry on a conversation as it would constantly connect and disconnect. Is this an issue with every kitkat rom?
I have E970.

It must be a KitKat related issue because I didn't have the issue on JB (SlimBean). Thought it may have something to do with the radios. It's intermittent which is a blessing and a curse. I can go a week or two with no issue...then multiple times on a one call (I could put the phone down and make a sandwich if mom is talking...she'd not notice...thus a great tester for this kinda stuff)
I've tried several (if not all) KK radios...no noticeable impact on this issue.
I'm also on the e970.
Note: I'm not losing connection for 15 sec. The headset says 'out of range' then immediately 'connecting'...but it takes time to reconnect and get the phone conversation back. I usually power cycle the headset since it seems more likely to be stable...otherwise it's likely to disconnects/reconnects over and over and over.

Yes, this really seems to be KitKat issue. I installed ParanoidAndroid and it was somewhat better in a sense, it didn't disconnect/connect as often. I do think, bluetooth gets killed when the screen is turned off and then gets turned back on. I can provide with a log file if someone has any ideas on this issue. Definitely I do want to drive handsfree.

Well, I think it may not be kk problem after all because I installed CyanogenMod version 11-20140225-nightly-e970 and I did not experience any issues so far. I will update if I encounter this issue in future.
When I had installed paranoidandroid beta 6, I did not have to install any radios either but still had issue.
For CM11, I did not have to flash any radios either and it is working without any issues till now.

Bluetooth Headset issues

Anyone experiencing coverage issues with a bluetooth headset? I have read that there are issues with bluetooth and automobiles, but hadn't seen anyone have any issues with headsets. I have a Sony SBH-80 and when device is in my pocket, I have breakup. When I reboot, it temporarily works great, but slowly degrades again. It used to be only my back pocket, now even it it's in my front pocket I have issues. I did not have this issue with my G4. Oh, and I'm only 5' 7", so it's not like it is a great distance between my headset and my phone!
I just bought the v10 two days ago and I'm experiencing this problem as well. I listen to podcasts while asset work, and when the phone's in my pocket, the signal constantly breaks up. But if it's on the table in front of me or in my hand, it's fine. Very frustrating. Hopefully LG will address the issue in an update soon.

I wonder if its the headset or the phone? I believe it must be the phone, because past LG phones had bluetooth issues, and I've read where people with this phone are having bt issues with their cars, so I hope that's it. I love the headset - tremendous sound for a bt and awesome battery life!
Just noticed - I gave you your first "Thanks"!

Good point. I'm almost positive it's an issue with the phone because I've used the same bt headset (Samsung HM3300) with my HTC One and LG G4 (this is my third HM3300. I keep losing them lol so the one I'm using is actually almost new).
Whether it's this specific phone or actually the V10 model, I can't tell, but I'm leaning towards the latter. Not sure it's worth exchanging the phone since I've spent hours setting it up already lol. But maybe I'll get to the point where I can't take it any more because I rely heavily on using my bt headset.
Actually between these posts, I plugged in my charger and walked 15 feet away and my bt signal was fine. But as soon as it goes in my pocket, the signal gets choppy. I dunno.
Thanks for my first like! ?
I also have a Sony SBH-80 headset and it worked with no problems connected to my Note 4. I just got my V10 on 11/1 and have had several issues with my SBH-80 connected. Sometimes when talking through my headset voices sound "electronic" and I cannot even get the phone to show disconnected from the headset when the headset is turned off. I also cannot manually disconnect. I have to reboot the phone. I'm not sure when is going on here but its about to drive me crazy. I also have a pair of LG Infinims that I have not yet paired. I am going to par them tomorrow and see if I have the same issue but I like my SBH-80s much better and hope that LG fixes the issue. Hopefully they will roll out an update to fix the bluetooth issues that I have been reading about in the forums.

I have HBS-730, and I've had some luck rotating the phone 180 degrees in the pocket - upside down. The way I see it, it brings the sensor ~15 centimeters closer to the ears. If that does not help, usually restarting the headset helps.
And I just got this new phone too.....
Well...this is disappointing. After reading thru this thread and others, I can now confirm that it definitely is my new LG V10 having BlueTooth Connectivity Issues. I paired it to my Samsung Level BT headset and when I put my V10 in my back pocket, my front pocket or my jacket pocket, the sound begins to Sputter and Crackle and Pop. When I take the V10 out of my pocket and hold it in my hand, the audio plays just fine. It's winter time in NYC and I cannot walk these streets holding my phone in my exposed hands to hear my music clearly. Really upset now with this LG V10....and I was just beginning to settle in with it too. I did a little research and found a possible solution. I intend to test it on my subway ride to work....
How to fix LG V10 Bluetooth issues:
Turn on the LG V10
Go to home screen and select the app icon
Then select on the settings icon
Browse for the Application Manager
Display All Tabs by swiping either right or left
Select on Bluetooth
Select to stop it forcefully.
Now clear the cache
Select clear the Bluetooth data
Select Ok
Finally restart the LG V10
If the steps above don’t work, try performing a wipe cache partition on your LG V10. After that, try to connect the LG V10 with another Bluetooth device in range and it should work. These instructions should be able to solve any Bluetooth problems you have on your LG V10.
And here's the link to the Wipe Cache Partition incase the the BT Fix didn't work:

Happens with my Earpiece also. Gonna try above. Thanks

Z5 Compact with SBH-80 range is pathetic.

Hey guys,
I basically bought the SBH-80 for about £40 and I'm experiencing some erratic behavior.
Sometimes if I leave the phone on my desk I can walk to the other side of the house before audio starts distorting i.e. the range is good. But sometimes the range is like 20cm. I kind find any pattern which would explain this discrepancy. The range is awful about 95% of the time.
The problem is I cycle to work, the phone works fine when I'm setting it up. It connects quickly and music starts playing. As soon as I put it into my pockets the music distorts, snap, crackle, pops and is basically unusable.
I've probably missed out lots of vital information but this is the jist of the issue. Can anyone recommend me trying anything?
note: It's not the headunit, I've tested it with an iPhone 5S and an iPhone 5 and it functions perfectly.

bad news bro. that happened to my sbh80 too. bought it for $100 last year. either your bluetooth antenna(left earpiece cable) snapped or you have damaged bluetooth module. mine had that problem 3 months after buying it. kept it in storage for months i forgot i ever bought it. then i saw it again while i was cleaning up with 90% battery. tried it and now it works well. i don't know what happened as i sold it the next day for $65.

Brilliant lol It lasted ONE cycle trip, before it started distorting. Thankfully the eBay seller said I can return it. It's such a shame... I really like the design. Can you recommend any other bluetooth headsets?

I'd say jaybird bluebuds since you cycle to work. They sound really good too.
I've got a Plantronics Voyager Legend. Within the same room (~20ft) it seems ok, but if it has to go through a wall (~30ft), it starts to break up. I once tried going up one floor and on the opposite side of the house (maybe 50ft at most) and it was really bad.
I figured that bluetooth in general wasn't that great.
I've never had an issue with the phone on me though.
I have more issues with my bluetooth mouse connected to my laptop

Ooft they are very expensive, not sure if I can endure such a hit on my bank account . I appreciate good audio quality. At home I use Grado SR225i's with Little Dot 1+ amp and I love it... Not tried a headphone more than I like that combination. But when it comes to earphones I don't really care about quality because I know I won't get anything close to the grado, the Sony earphones that came with my Z1 Compact are more than good enough but, of course, it's not wireless.

I've read a few threads were the Z5 was having trouble connecting to bluetooth in people's cars etc but I think my issue is with the headset because it doesn't actually work with any other phone either
I have a z1 compact, and I've always had bt issues with it across devices. I have a z5 compact arriving tomorrow, reading this isn't inspiring.
I use a sbh52, and it never quite worked right with sony, but I think that was mostly due to the data channel stuff and how it interacted with the app for email alerts and other socket stuff that uses raw serial protocols to communicate. I've at times had 4-5 different serial devices attached to the phone, and none of them are happy when doing so. The radio seems to become selective about who is actually working at a time, but the upstream consumers at the bluez socket layer seem unaware stuff isn't working.
I got a non-sony phone, a sharp aquos, and using it with my sbh52 without any sony software, and only that - it rocks actually, range and all. I felt a little bit bad I used to talk so much crap about it.
My biggest telltale of bluetooth serial dysfunction with my z1c was my google glass, which works entirely as both a persistent tethered device via bt, and a headset device. Data for glass via bt also refused to work if I disabled the headset kindly, so in other words bluetooth dysfunction ruined usability when mobile. Now I tether my glass to my tablet data that does no other bt, and seems to work pretty dandy.
It seems more of a bluetooth stack issue as a whole, either between google and/or firmware vendors, and if my z5 gives me issues too, I'll just need to find a more "dumb" headset.
---------- Post added at 10:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:26 AM ----------
I started watching catlog (log reader) when using my glass and headset troubleshooting, and would suggest doing so too.
I would always see "innocuous" looking messages about the bt, but nothing seemed to ever really "break". I'd see disconnects and reconnects, when one device or the other wouldn't/couldn't connect, seemed at the radio level though as the headset would just give up trying to connect.
Happened the same to me too. Xperia z5c+sbh80. The audio is kinda lagging whenever I put in my pocket. But, I have read somewhere in xda post that somebody claimed it might related with stamina mode configuration (solution given: put audio setting into exception list) and it might related to activity on the fingerprint scanner as well (really? solution given: try to avoid any contact on the fingerprint scanner because z5c try to initiate vibration mode while the audio is still playing). I have try both solutions, and yeah, there are little bit less lagging activity.
I'm using Sony SBH-80 as well, and it works perfect. I'm listening about 2-3h music/day, loads of calls through SBH80, and it works fine. Indeed, sometimes it disconnects automatically (usually when I'm using facebook call and I receive an email or something like that). On my S6 dual sim didn't happened that, but I can live with that. Sorry guys to hear that you have issues with that, on my side it's fine.
Late reply guys sorry.

So does the Z5 compact work with your headset then? They seem to release cool devices, update to a later version of android, it ends up not working properly and they pretty much just forget about it.

Yes! My SBH52 was absolute crap with my z1c (random disconnects, sound levels, just never connecting), with a Sony original rom, Cyanogen10-11, any kernel/rom I tried. With my z5c, my SBH52 works dandy, even with the sony app installed for the data link, as well as my SBH60's that came with the z5c as a Clove special. Need to resurrect my jawbone, everyone hated it I spoke to prior, now I'm curious about it too.
Oddly, my friend just upgraded too, didn't want to spend the extra for a z5c, so got a used z3c instead, and has a lot of issues with his bluetooth as well. Mine was more disconnections, devices fighting over connections, but his seems to be just simple horrible quality, like noise entering in when used, so not sure if it's bad software or bad phy bt chip or a bunk build.prop on it. Sound always required a lot of tweaking on my z1c, it was useless without root and hacking to fix the crap sony rom build or a *good* 3rd party rom, so maybe it as well.
Range-wise, I've used the SBH52's with my phone upstairs on my desk, and walking downstairs about 30 feet away and through a hall/wall. The SBH60 has much less range I've found, 20 feet away and down the hall same level codec sound comes unglued.

I don't ever use stamina modes... My battery life is/was always crap on my z1c (~6-8hr), as I collect a bunch of push imap accounts with aquamail, multiple gmail accounts, lots of system level apps, so it's almost expected my battery life to be nil. I've been a bit more pleasantly surprised with the z5c with most everything from my z1c loaded (~10-15hr), the battery life is still better, but the z1c was also ~3yr old with original battery.

They *did* have the whole headphone connection issue on the z3c, really don't know how much of those sorts of things come down to maybe bad connectors internally. Doesn't seem to matter if you're apple or sony, us or china, sh*t happens.
My only impetus for upgrade was I noticed I had some discoloration on my z1c lcd, and my phone now had a noticeable curve in the middle (think lg flex) after apparently sitting on it the wrong way, so replacing it before it just died was key. So far I'm happier with the z5c. as thus far "everything works", including sound levels that were always an issue with the z1c too (bad Sony), and especially bluetooth function. The fingerprint reader unlock convenience is awesome, and I'm looking forward to trying payments with it. I came across the z5 drm restore now, so it's rooting time, and it's going to get even better once I can remove nauseating ads with an adblock means, and using xprivacy again since since disables app privacy (gee, thanks big brother).

marshmallow Bluetooth problem

Ive started having crackling sounds with Bluetooth Anyone else having those issues? unrooted Vs990 running marshmallow, Nova beta
If there is one thing that has seriously troubled me with this phone it is the bluetooth performance. About every 2-3 months mine seems to degrade. It gets to the point where if any other data signal is happening (running another app, email downloading in the background, etc) while I'm streaming music over bluetooth it cuts out, stutters, crackles, etc. This even occurs if my music is on my SD card and not coming over a data connection.
If I do a factory reset it completely clears it up and I have no issues for about 2 months, at which point the degrading starts again and within a month gets so bad again I have to do another factory reset.
I have the same issue... Extremely frustrating as I use bluetooth headphones and speakers and both have the same problem.
I actually have zero BT issues with this phone. I had to get rid of my n6 due to BT problems so i understand the frustration but i seem to ne free of this. I use BT all day every day
After doing some research I came across a small blurb in reddit where someone fixed a Samsung with a similar problem. Followed the rabbit hole to battery optimization and it seems to fixed my problems. Here's my posted solution. http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v10/help/marshmallow-blue-tooth-problems-solved-t3409943/page1

Android 7, Bluetooth headset, and auto-resume of media player when phone call ends...

So, I posted a thread about this in the off-topic area, which may not have been the most appropriate place, and I apologize; however, getting to this area of the board is not an obvious thing when you're sitting on the initial page of the board and looking at phone devices as categories as one's only other options.
Anyhow...
Here's the deal. I have noticed the following tendency, ever since Android 5.0 (or maybe 5.1), when a Bluetooth headset has an active connection to the phone, and NEVER if there is no actively connected Bluetooth headset:
When a phone call is disconnected, either by the person on the other end of the call, or by myself, that my phone will open up a media player and start playing a song, a local video, or streaming content. This happens about 25% or more of the time when the call is ended remotely, and 75% or more of the time if I end the call, now that I'm using Android 7 (stock) on my phone.
I ran Android 4.x and 5.x on my Nexus 4, and saw this occasionally. I briefly ran a custom ROM of Android 6 on it. I don't know if I noticed much of a difference between 5.x and 6 on my Nexus 4.
I now have a Nexus 6, on which I have run Android 6.x and now 7.x, and while the behavior was worse than on my Nexus 4, it wasn't too horribly bad (at least, that I noticed). However, I am using a Bluetooth headset on my phone basically 7 days a week now, and I'd say the situation has gotten noticeably much worse on the same hardware under Android 7.
I have used two bluetooth headsets across these two different phones, both of which are Plantronics units.
I tried an experiment this past Thursday in which I turned off the Media option on my phone for the headset, and the behavior seems to have stopped altogether.
The problem is that I also use my phone as a GPS, and as my current job has me driving quite a bit, I need turn-by-turn audio instructions since I will not look at my phone's screen while driving. Turning off the Media option means the voice navigation then plays over the phone's speaker, and with background noise, that's not as good as having it straight in my ear.
So, my point in this thread basically is: is anyone else seeing this same behavior, and is there anything useful one can do to solve it?
There's now a new wrinkle to this.
For reasons unrelated to this thread, I just factory reset my phone. I have my usual apps on it (not much exciting) and I hung up from my headset, without ever having once opened up ANY media player since the wipe. It opened Google Play Music and started streaming music from my account.
This has gone past the point of being ridiculous.
Is there a chance that this is simply a thing related to using a Plantronics product?
I mean, I'm at wit's end here. I have no idea how to proceed because I feel I've pretty much done everything.
OK, I know this has been such an interesting and engaging saga for everyone here, but maybe this will be of use to someone else in the future...
I bought a Jabra Bluetooth earpiece, and now all the problems are gone. Yay!
