Camera NX v7.2 for HDR with DNG RAW + JPEG Output - Google Pixel 2 XL Themes, Apps, and Mods

I've found that using Camera NX by Charles_l allows me to shoot in HDR or HDR+ while still outputting a DNG Raw file. This is awesome because you get all the benefits of Google's computational photography algorithms, and still, have a raw file that you can tweak in your editors like Lightroom Mobile or Snapseed.
v7.2 seems to work well for me, but 7.3.1 crashes on startup.
Here's the link to v7.2. https://chromloop.com/2017/10/apk-camera-nx-v7-nexus-5x6p-base-google-camera-5-1-meet-motion-photo/
No Root required.

Note that you can't get these HDR+ raw files with other apps. Hopefully Google activates this feature officially.

I'm running LOS and the 7.2 FC's after taking a pic, but with 7.3.1 everything works. Thanks for posting

I just noticed that raw files look somewhat less sharp than those regular ones. Did you guys noticed that?

Do you have experience shooting with RAW? It's likely that what you're seeing is actually a desired effect of RAW. Normally the camera software post-processes and corrects things before compressing to JPEG. RAW is exactly that; raw.

Yeah, Google photos and some other image viewers show the raw file in an odd way (kind of like a really low-res image). Try throwing that image into Lightroom and applying a preset.

Yes, I have the same impression. You need to sharpen them more than the usual raw files. After sharpening the amount of detail looks very good to me. But in low light conditions I have the impression that Google applies a bit of noise reduction to the raw files.

To quote the meme,
these words you use... They do not mean what you think they mean....
An HDR image is a composite. a RAW image is a single image.
You cannot have a RAW HDR file. That's not a thing. Google can't "activate" something that doesn't exist.

It does exist. I have already taken HDR+ raw files. It's a different definition of raw and Adobe also has a feature called Raw HDR. This definition of raw doesn't mean unprocessed data of a single image. It means that a dng file was combined with multiple dng files. Simply a different definition of raw. For example the Light L16 shoots in raw, too.

Actually you can have a RAW HDR file. I do it often in Lightroom on PC. You take your 3 or whatever amount of exposures you want, then merge them to HDR in Lightroom and it creates a raw file with all the images combined.

The resulting file is not a proper RAW image. It's a composite, complete with edits to highlights and shadow.
The composite that Lightroom creates (both on PC and in mobile) have the adjustments pre-made. Taking an HDR+ is capturing a composite image and saving it in the RAW format, which greatly limits what you're capable of doing with your photos.
The adjustments to tones, light, shadow are already tweaked to whatever the software chose. If those highs and lows are peaked, you don't get to raise or lower any further. It is a RAW file, it is not a RAW image. It's not a thing... Or at least not a particularly useful thing. Like owning a stereo that gradually turns the volume to random levels throughout the day.

You're talking a lot without having even used the app and without having used the files. It generates a true RAW image. RAW simply means that the source image sensor data is preserved.

A Composite image saved as raw is still not a true raw file.
The easiest way to see it is to take your phone that is capable of HDR+, install Lightroom Mobile, take an HDR+ photo, and then open it in Lightroom on your desktop.
Notice that the photo is already adjusted. Nothing is at 0 for levels. It's already tonal mapped, and already adjusted for highlight and shadow. It is already an adjusted composite image. While cool, is not really useful as far as a proper RAW file.

This is the RAW saved as a JPEG. I have other examples just like this where I took a photo of the sun through a palm tree. With the RAW I can adjust the exposure (usefully) after the shot, with the JPEG I can't.

Funny enough, RAW converters I use like PhotoNinja and Lightroom CC do exactly the same with the RAW files I shoot with my DSLR (Canon EOS 450D and 760D) at home. When pulling the RAW files from the SD to my HDD, load them up in LR or PN, the RAW file is already set up and not at 0-Levels for everything.
I am actually quite sure the RAW files generated on the mobile with CNX are actually real RAW files as well, as they contain quite a good amount of pixel data, compared to the generated JPG's from the default camera app. Same as those HDR RAW's I played around with a while ago (manual exposures, 3-image-series). AFAIK you CAN combine 3 differently pre-exposed RAW files to combine them in RAW Converters to a full HDR RAW which considers the RAW pixel data of all 3 images combined. Those HDR RAW files can become quite huge tho, and performance can suffer while editing on lower end machines.

Wow, that processed image actually looks really impressive! Great use of exposure control, detail sharpening (contrast sharpen?) and noise reduction. The first Image actually looks quite bland and not very exciting, as I expected an unprocessed RAW to be.
I am actually quite amazed by the possibilities of mobile RAW processing.... I imagined the "unedited" RAW of a phone camera sensor to be way less... usable.

The processed photo is the regular HDR+ image from Google.
I'm not sure if XDA downsized the images, but the source RAW is extremely usable. Very bland as expected, but full size on my 4K monitor, there is an huge level of detail that is being retained.

Ok, that fooled me. Still amazed about the Pixel 2 Camera. But I bet the same thing can be achieved by processing a RAW file with a proper RAW converter.

please port to 32bits version

I'm pretty sure xda has downsized the images. Zooming in on either of those photos on my phone, they both look out of focus, blurry. No matter where in the photo I look, I can't find any sharpness if detail.

Damn, anyone get this working in Lightroom on pc? I shoot with cam nx raw hdr+ but the hdr'ness of the file is simply not there, it's like one of the exposures. Compared to normal hdr on cam it's lacking the huge dynamic range. Anyone get the true hdr raw working on pixel 2m

[Q]Jpeg compression on X10

Hi Devs... do you know if there is a way to change the jpeg compression on Xperia X10 with android 2.1? is a little frustrating to have a 8mpx camera and be limited to 2mb photos...
8MP in a ~2MB jpeg is normal. My bro's pro Canon makes 3MB raw picture, but it's only 2MP
So what? Wait till the bootloader gets cracked. Did you see maxfron's latest post? He makes great progress on it
We don't have to wait.
Just use a different Camera-Application ( I use Camera 360 Pro, it compresses less)
Or decompile and rewrite the SE Camera-Application.
the problems is, the photos taken with the stock camera the quality of jpeg compression is very poor... i don't like vignette or camera 360, just don't feel good with the interface and in all that options there is no way to change the ISO value nor the shutter velocity, neither with the stock camera app but at least is "free".
Guys check this out
This SEMC camera mod by 28spawn works great for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922657
I don't think the raw format has been implemented yet in the android SDK. There are placeholders for raw functionality however. So perhaps eventually.
As for JPG compression I would think the stock sony cam app makes the most of the camera and sets quality to 100. JPG is a lossy format though so will not be perfect.
Try turning image stabilization off. It will result in a sharper image.

Camera Bump + DNG Capture

Hi guys,
Just received my phone. Got the latest Android version and I'm fairly happy with it.
Got a quick question - How vulnerable is the glass in front of the camera? I really want to maintain the image quality, but knowing that the phone has a camera bump and it's literally rubbing against surfaces, I wanted to ask whether any of you got noticeable scratches on it? I still have the protective plastic sticker on it which reduces the quality greatly, but I just want to know whether I should really think about how to protect the camera glass? (Like sticking a washer on it, etc.)
Also, something I have found out: The phone takes RAW (DNG) photos with the stock camera only. Which you then (blindly & 1 by 1) need to convert to .tiff using DCraw Mobile app. Then, you end up with ~70mb 16bit tiff file which you can import into Lightroom/Photoshop. Now the whole process is a bit time-consuming. Anyone found any workarounds this?
Sorry for all the questions, but I really like this phone. I'm planning on sticking with it for a while. So I have to be careful not to wreck it.
Cheers!

@empy16
Give that a try
In Picture format button where it had jpeg written tap on it and select DNG
Let me know how it goes if Successful you will need to shoot a white image DNG so I can create a FlatFielD correction to be added to DNG Metadata.
Easiest Quickest way place a a white page A4 printing page on top PC Monitor Set PC background to White at Full Brightness Defocus the image with manual focus / set infinity focus set iso100 take the image of the page make sure not to include your fingers in the image lol.
Should DNG Capture but experience FC it maybe caused by my android studio in that case I've pushed the Elephone 9000 to my got will ask the other dev to build

I will try to produce the white DNG when I get a chance (Today or Tomorrwo). Thanks!
Right, even with FreeDCam DNG/RAW capture does not work on Custom non-stock roms like ResurrectionRemix or Cyanogenmod. Any chance for a fix. I really need this, this was a big selling point for me.

Camera RAW support?

Hi!
I am planing on buying this phone (currently have a S5 that's beginning to show it's age) and would really like to know if poco has a working (and tested) RAW photo support. This is something I actually miss the most with my S5 camera. Can someone with a GCam please check and ideally upload a low light high ISO DNG sample photo?
If anyone is wondering what's the use of RAW, with all the hassle (beware, technical details ahead, possibly even a bit of math!):
Access to the RAW sensor data is extremely powerful. When doing a night time photography you can get significantly better results by manually lowering the ISO and bumping the exposure but in truly low light that's not enough. You then take dozens of 30s exposures and add them together. The problem is that if you are working with JPEGs, it doesn't really work for extremely low signals. If there is a light source in your image that even after 30s exposure does not expose a pixel enough to bump the value from 0 to 1, with the added noise reduction it gets rounded to 0 every time, so adding zeroes gets you nowhere. On the other hand, if there is a significant noise in your sensor, that's actually in this case extremely helpful. By adding the photos that have a very low signal (below a normal detection threshold) but also a significant noise, you can remove the noise and still get the signal that has 'piggybacked' on the noise above the pixel threshold. Doing this, if you have the patience, basically makes your photos limited only by the 12MP sensor resolution and the lens quality. The quality of the sensor, it's dynamic range and noise level becomes completely irrelevant and you can basically simulate an 'ideal' sensor with arbitrarily large dynamic range and sensitivity and arbitrarily low noise. You should, for example, be able to do astrophotography and photograph objects that are too dim to be visible with a naked eye, beyond what even dSLRs can manage without these kinds of tricks.
With the very fast CPU and plentiful RAM you could even possibly automate this tedious process on the phone itself (for example by the use of CLI linux raw photo manipulation tools installed through termux or linuxdeploy) so it could be as simple as putting a phone on a tripod (or a sky tracking mount), starting a simple script and waiting for half an hour while the phone takes and processes the photos.
With access to the still linear RAW pixel data, you can even use the camera as a 'scientific' sensor in, for example, a cheap portable spectroscope. The possibilities are endless
Yes, I am well aware that I am weird
yup you can. also you can install 3rd party app and camera2 api is enabled by default no need to root and bootloader unlock for that.
Secondly camera is super awesome.
i can you lead to telegram group where people share their photoshots done on poco f1. you will get the idea
The gcam is one option for you to capture raw images but it does not support manual mode so you cannot get those long exposure raw images to talked about. What you can do is get a camera app that supports both raw images capturing and manual mode like proshot or manual camera
Very cool, thank you both! It would be great if someone could upload an actual DNG file taken with the poco and an app that also supports manual exposure. I am curious if the cli programs will recognise the format.

well manual mode is supported by default camera, but it doesn't have any option for RAW output.
my best pick will be open camera application.

I've shot some raw photos using latest GCAM. However I don't know any apps for RAW files editing in phone. And I Didn't get time to check their quality on Photoshop. RAW files size is around 15Mb. I can send you those photos if you want to check.
That would be great if the DNG format is the same as the one the other apps (that have also manual support) produce. Can you send it to my gmail (same username)? Thanks.

Gcam with manual controls does exist you know. Just get gcam with mods or from sannnity. These have manual control which can control ISO from 100 to 6400, shutter time from 1s to 32s (nothing shorter than 1s) and manual focus control. They can save it in raw.
FreeDCam also supports both manual controls and RAW.
To edit RAW images on the phone, use google snapseed app.

RAW support

Hi,
Can someone with Xperia 1 please:
1. Install "Camera2 API probe" and report if it has a green check for "RAW capture".
2. If RAW is indeed supported, please install "Open Camera" (or another third party app supporting RAW output), take some pictures in DNG format and provide the original DNG files.
3. Also take the same photos with the stock Sony cam and provide the original JPG files for comparison with the DNG.
I think this may help quite a few people since we have yet to see any evidence of RAW support and samples from Xperia 1.
Thank you in advance.
Here you go buddy :

Thanks a lot for your quick reply.
Of course if you have a chance to post some unprocessed DNG's vs stock cam that would be great.
I'd like to test if we can extract better quality than stock from the RAW in post processing.
Raw Capture App : Camera FV-5
Hi there, I too realized that the stock camera under not so ideal conditions does not really produce the best image. Hope sony does fix it with an update, they have after years made a good phone to compete with other really hope they don't screw it up.
Coming back to topic :
I am currently using Camera FV-5 paid application and the RAW image is amazing in terms of getting a good base to play around on lightroom. I am even getting extremely impressive images by editing it on phone with Lightroom (paid full) android app.
I will try and post a google drive link in sometime, but for a quick feedback the RAW capture on Xperia 1 is good. I am sure even other 3rd party RAW apps should work well., given it has full Camera 2 API support. (Note it does not support level 3 API though)
Thank you cletusindia for your valuable info,
Can you tell me if the RAW support also applies to the telephoto and ultrawide lenses ?
Also can you access these lenses with FV-5 ? (I have FV-5 but only 1 lens on the XZ2 so I dont' know how it deals with multi-lens.)

It doesn't make sense sony locking it even if the JPEG are great.
LG phones have RAW on all lenses for years altought JPEG processing in the later models is not very good.

Question Size of Pixel 6 dng photo files

Sometimes the dng files are smaller than the jpg files, using the standard Google camera app.
The file sizes of the dng files are never the same also.
But always the dng files from the Google app are much smaller (file size) than from other camera apps.
Example: dng from Google camera app is approx. 10 MB; "same picture" dngs from Open Camera, ProCamX and ProShot are 23.94 MB.
Can someone explain how these differences arise?
Pixel dng files are compressed so it is normal. Quality is not affected by this. Also if you use zoom this is just crop of the full dng (useless) so the file size becomes even smaller.

Thank you neptun2 for your reply. This explains it all. I will stay away from the x2 zoom from now on.
I still do not understand why the quality of the dng is not affected by the compression however.
The gcam mod helped a lot, because I could improve the jpg quality with it.
