I loved my Nexus 5 but my power button was starting to be erratic and I had the US version that was lacking 4G as I live in the UK. Vodafone were selling the G2 at only £150 ($230) on black Friday so I decided to take the plunge.
I was hoping the G2 would be like a Nexus 5 with a bigger battery and better camera but feared the bloat. I’m into my second week of usage now and I’m pleasantly surprised for the following reasons:-
-Getting double the battery, (double standby, double SOT, all with much higher brightness.)
-Some of the bloat is actually useful like Quick Remote and Wireless Storage.
-The UI doesn’t feel that much slower.
-Vibration feels nicer.
A few things I’d wish they would sort out:-
-No recents button, (WTF where they thinking?)
-Some bloat can’t be disabled or uninstalled.
-No ART.
-Firmware has to be updated by Google, then LG, then Vodafone.
I know that many of my wishes would be solved by rooting but I’m unable to find a download for the Vodafone UK 20e firmware. (If i need to go back.)
Has anyone else come from the Nexus 5? Do you regard it an upgrade or downgrade? What are your thoughts? Are you a G2 owner thinking of going the other way?

Actually I had the Nexus 5 since the release and then went for a G2. Gotta say its a nice upgrade from Nexus 5 but you will have to be patient for Android updates as LG is being late on firmware updates. Then when the Android L was released, i got impatient and sold the G2 just to get Nexus 5 and use new android version .....but i regret this, I miss the G2 and I'm looking to get one soon.
ps. I watched a leaked video of official Lollipop on G2 and they have added the recent button instead of the Menu button(which i didn't liked it either).

PS recents buttons will be present on Lollipop official instead of menu button. Well have G3 UI.
Its funny that when choosing a phone after the Nexus 5, I only thought of phones that came out in the Kit Kat era due to not liking Lollipop.
I tried it on the Nexus 5 and it only lasted about a day before I went back to KK. There are too many bugs, too many bad decisions and the memory leak that make Lollipop dreadful as a daily driver. When they sort things out I'd like to use Lollipop but the good thing about the G2 is that I can always go back to KK if I chose. The Nexus 6 for instance doesn't give you this option. :crying:
And yes, overall I do think the G2 is an upgrade. :highfive:
as soon as you root install xposed and then g2 tweakbox and you can unleash its powers
and i wanted to get a n5 but the battery life scares me on that phone

Number 1 and 3 will come when LG pushes Lollipop. We'll get G3 UI and with that comes recents button.
Only question to that is, will KitKat which we have now be better than future and possibly buggy Lollipop.
2 can be fixed by root but I think you already know that
And also, you can flash ROMs with [All Variants] on the thread title. So you can have G3 ROMs now. And yes, they are stable

Yea Root is mandatory for the G2 IMO. I've stayed on the stock experience because I really love the perks and features of the LG rom.
I personally use a G3 Rom Port. Works beautifully and has options for changing the nav buttons to include Recent built into the rom.
OR just install Xposed and G2 Tweakbox or G3 Tweakbox (depending on what you are using).
AND CHANGE THE DPI to 400! So much better at 400 (or 380).
The NavBar keys do not require root. Just download the APK and install:

The G3 rom ports DO have ART support... but XPOSED doesn't support ART... so half dozen 6 in the other. Xposed > Art so I stick with DALIK

I also had to make that decision I suggest the G2 since its actually in almost every way better and it costs now around the same pruce but you get better hardware and software. If you want the nexus feeling just flash a aosp rom on it.

Thanks. I keep going back and forth. The specs on the G2 do seem superior. I guess I just need to see how hard it is to unlock bootloader and flash roms on G2. I'm pretty comfortable using Fastboot.
Do the buttons on the back of the device bother you? I just don't know anyone with a G2 and I know several with a Nexus 5.

They don't at all. Only issue i have with them is that when my phones on a table, i cant change the volume. Otherwise, they work much better than standard buttons. The first few days are awkward though, specially when you keep pressing the camera lens instead of the power button
I also LOVE the fact that they allow for the amazingly thin bezels. Truly makes this phone look and feel amazing.

Well you can't unlock bootloader yet this isn't only the fault from LG because Providers also want the bootloader to stay locked but we can flash normally roms now using loki/bump so it's not the biggest issue anymore but it will be alot easier if it will get unlocked. Well you could use fastboot but then you need a mod from savoca to acces it like that. I was also used to fastboot on my nexus4 but I will tell you once you have the G2 you wouldn't care much anymore. I was a big flashaholic and now I am mostly staying on the CloudyG3 rom because of it's great features and camera app which aren't fully working on AOSP roms. But once we will get multiboot fully working on the G2 we will feature lollipop and G3 stock rom :good:
It doesn't bother me at all, first I thought that it was going to be a big obstacle but I really like them at the back, easy to control for me and with knockon and knockoff it's perfect, although like alb3rtt said before, volume changing when the phone is on the table is sometimes annoying but it's not a big deal since you got the volume slider in the status bar when you are on stock atleast.
again like alb3rtt said, the first days were indeed awkward because I also touched the whole time the camera when trying to press the buttons but you get used to it fast :good: You gotta decide, much development but kinda boring (nexus5) or the LG G2 just a awesome device with enough development which is even increasing. I was thinking about which phone for 6 months so I suggest you the G2 since some bugs from the Nexus5 and the bad battery life isn't worth it.

I used to be flashaholic when I had the Galaxy Nexus, but this changed when I moved on to the Optimus G and now the G2.
I find LG ROMs amazing and have everything one needs.
The increased screen size over basically the same phone size is a great plus.
Personally I, as well as people around me, think that the back button arrangement should be on every phone. They really help keep the footprint down.
I didn't have problems hitting the keys as they perfectly placed for my hand(which is average in size).
For me, I don't change my volume while it's on a table or something so it's not a problem, and it's more useful as I can easily change the volume while my phone is in my G2.
CloudyG3 + Dorimanx kernel = best combination I have ever used on any phone.

I'm actually starting to prefer the back buttons on the G2 :silly: When I'm trying to take a photo on holiday, I can fire up the camera whilst the phone is still in my pocket and not attract attention to myself. Knock on and knock off rule also.
I'm now using the most upto date LG stock rom (20H) and dont believe a stock rom will ever be as smooth as the Nexus 5. Just ask yourself this, which is better, A smooth phone with a joke of a battery or a 10% slower phone with a 100% better battery. Its an easy choice in my book. :angel:
I've had my LG-G5 H850 for a few months now.... really hated the LG UI, but managed to get it close to usable with Google Now, etc so I didn't rush into it....
The only thing about the LG ROM that I'm nervous about losing is the LG camera software.... does the dual mode camera and all the manual options (incl RAW photo's, etc) still work in Cyanogenmod / similar?
Which ROMs are people running? I notice that there's still no Cyanogenmod/Mokee build for the G5
Are people just running stock, rooted and debloated?
Custom Roms

As you already know there are currently no cm roms as of yet but there are 3 custom roms to my knowledge. The current custom roms all use the flagship camera software so your good to go ahead with flashing any one of them.
I doubt Cm will run the flagship flagship camera software and im unaware of any cm camera software utilising the 3 cameras as of yet.
I was a D855(G3) owner for the past 3 years. The Rom development was huge but unfortunately no cm based or aosp based Rom was able to go even close to stock camera quality. LG camera framework was closed coded and LG hasn't shared the code yet. So I guess the same thing will happen to G5. I just hope for more developers to join the G5 community.
I was also on LS990 lg g3 since it's release till coming to g5 and I mainly ran pure AOSP,XenonHD with a few exceptions for some CM-based ROMs... Till I found Fulmics(which was similar to UX 5.0) which was amazing despite missing some features find in AOSP/CM-style ROMs
But I must say I love UX 5.0 with app drawer; I think I'm part of the minority that thinks LG did a great job with their new UI,esp compared to the old UI's...
At this point I wouldn't want to run CM-anything...esp if it means giving up my camera! I mean if u want a circle battery icon that bad just install gravity box... But this UI has grown on me

I have an H930 version of the V30 non-root and I love the phone. However, the Pie update is not to my liking. I feel like the phone feels slower to use and there are some aesthetic choices I do not agree with. I have decided that I will downgrade my phone to 8.0 but as I started thinking if I will lose any features of note I thought to myself "Do I even need 8.0?".
I am wondering if any of you are still on Nougat and if so why or if anyone remembers what Nougat was like on the V30 (never had it on mine). Could it be that it was more optimized since it was the initial software the phone came out with? And primarily - what was the battery life like?

Nougat is too old. Better go with rooted oreo and use kernel like Ceres and mods like Anxious v30 mod.
With oreo rooted you can even use DTS

Afaik, nougat seem to have better battery but not much feature as Oreo. Both nougat aand Oreo are stable

Oreo has lots of fixes and camera improvements, especially post -January 2019. With root you can enable DTS framework. Even pre-January 2019 Oreo is not recommended for daily use.
That's one reason why we say to immediately update to latest Oreo firmware after bootloader unlock and root.

Also from my understanding feature wise there isn't MUCH of a difference between 7.0 and 8.0 and that's the only reason why I considered it. Granted there are a few things for sure but f rom some research I did i wouldn't miss anything that android in general gets in 8.0. Tho camera improvements do sound nice and that's something I'd like to have on my phone so high chance I'll just go to Oreo.
EDIT: Are there any super minimal oreo roms you guys would recommend? My phone is not rooted (yet) but I would consider it if there are any minimal roms around that improve performance/battery life. Tho I'll dive into searching the forums cause I bet similar questions have been asked before.

To further the discussion, this below
was ONE change log to Oreo in late 2018. One. There have been many others. Thus, I don't understand why anyone would want to run earlier pre-2019 firmware, especially Nougat?

I run stock Oreo 22j in my H930, it's perfectly stable, fast and great battery life. For aesthetic you just need to play with it a little bit, try to find some launcher, icon pack and widgets to your liking.

I have a question regarding Pie (official) on the LG V30, I understand there is a US998 version of Pie, I already frankensteined (?) an H931 to US998, unlocked bootloader and rooted. I was about to update to Pie but was wondering if its worth it? I bought this phone recently with Oreo on it and the AT&T rom. Downgraded to Nougat as per Frankenstein method instructions and went back up to Oreo, this time US998, was able to unlock bootloader and root. For the little while I was on Nougat, could definitely tell the battery did not drain as quick as on Oreo (as I had read before buying the phone) and I read some users started getting battery life back with Pie, among a few Pie features. But I also heard, updating to Pie actually changes the partition structure and thus making it harder to install custom roms in the future? is that true? I'm wondering mostly because I would like to extend the life of the device eventually and going the Android 10 route (LOS or whatever) or similar. I did this with the LG G3 back in the day, using crDroid Nougat which made it faster than ever, had all nougat features, no bloatware, lots of stable features of the rom itself, and made the battery better than ever. My original idea was to update to Pie then do a factory reset to make sure everything works as it should.
TLDR: Should I update to Pie? or stay in Oreo?

You can always upgrade to pie at any point right? So why give it a go when you gone through Oreo custom ROMs too

Also right now custom Roms for Oreo are better compared to Android 10 ROMs for this device ,go for a AOSP pie (e.g havoc 9) give it a try

Thanks for the quick reply! Are there custom roms that have, eg: better battery life and quad dac working normally? I mean, the battery is not bad, but I can tell there is a certain drain compared to the stock Nougat the phone comes with (again though, I bought this refurbished with Oreo already on it).

I didn't notice that much of a battery differences in between Pie and Oreo,
both being rooted in similar apps Pie might be slightly better? Or maybe same, like there wasn't dramatic drain on Oreo for me to be forced to come back to Pie,
Hmm among custom ROM I haven't had much of luck meaning I have Havoc a try and since I was coming from pie to Oreo to havoc couldn't get it working without permissive kernel and then didn't bother and flashed PIE zip I have lots of data 6gb WhatsApp alone so I avoid swapping ROMs I'll thought when I get the V40 or V30+ or smth with 845~855

Just make sure you update to latest Oreo, not the early Oreo needed for Bootloader Unlock. You need latest Oreo for DTS 3D Stereo and the many camera improvements.
I'm still on rooted stock US998 20h Oreo.
For using android 10 ROMs you'd need to have stock pie
But to use pie aosp it'd be best if you stay with stock oreo as Android 10 ROMs have a few bugs

Yep, seen that, I was doing some research. I think I will just stick to newest Oreo for now and try some custom pie roms, such as Havoc OS. Eventually, if I see any stable Android 10 roms appear, I'll move to that. Thanks for your help!

Hi Chazz,
I still have LG V30 h931 US998 20h rooted (stock) following your instructions. It has been solid as a rock, and I can do anything I need to with it. Recently picked up a One Plus 9 pro and I am seriously considering returning it before the 14 days run out. Battery life on my V30 is measured in days, not hours.
Just not seeing all that much increased performance to justify the 1k price. If I return it, I will get a Nord 10 and save a lot of cash.
Thanks for your hard work on this device. I hope there is a decent mod or update around the bend for this great phone someday soon.

Just not seeing all that much increased performance to justify the 1k price. If I return it, I will get a Nord 10 and save a lot of cash.
Thanks for your hard work on this device. I hope there is a decent mod or update around the bend for this great phone someday soon.

I just installed DTS 3D Stereo and it appears to be working with the eq add-on installed as well.
In your opinion, Which are the better camera mods and what do I need to be careful about if installing one?
Since the DTS 3D installed without issue am I good to go? (I should know this already right?)
Thank you so much for your help and support to all of the V30 fans for so long. I now have a Pixel 4A 5G as a tester and I am still not overly impressed with it over my rooted 2017 LG V30. A camera upgrade via software would likely keep me happy with this phone for several more years.

There are plenty of GCam versions out there but I admit I have lost track of which ones are better. In the first year of development, there was always something wrong with them and most people ended up using two different versions for various scenarios. i.e. one for wide angle, one for regular lens, etc. Maybe that all got fixed, but I am not sure. Then TotallyAnxious developed her omnibus module which included camera from the V35/V40, but her module is no longer available.

Thank you for the reply, I will let you know what I end up doing and if it ended up being an improvement.
Frankly the V30 camera is decent enough for most of what what I need it for.
FWIW, I am still on Oreo and I use Arnova's mod for GCam 6.1 (the latest version usable on Oreo... newer revs require Pie or higher). I found that the recommendations at this link worked best for me, in general: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-suggested/
I use the stock cam as well as this one as needed... this one does crash sometimes, but it works great for night-sight pictures, which is all I use it for.
Okay, I might be pre-biased, but I have heard about Sony firmware being exceptionally buggy even after many updates. (By all means, this is not Sony-exclusive problem.)
Can people still using the stock firmware confirm whether it is acceptable for daily use? How often do you reboot the phone?
I was actually planning on buying the phone with the suspicion that I will have to install LineageOS right away. Is there any experince of running LineageOS on it? Do all the nice features, like 4k screen, work?

Answering your question, yes, upgrading from a stock rom to a custom rom will make your experience a lot better. not only in performance, in battery , and customization
and even better if you root + stock rom, that's it. your phone value will increase because not only can you experience the latest Android 13 but you can also do multitasking work very smoothly
Also, battery consumption will be reduced twice, and you can customize it starting from the icons, status bar, and lockscreen. Not only that, you can also install root modules
i mean, you can also use xiaomi camera app on your sony phone camera
think about it with sony camera and xiaomi camera software
If you can do everything, i will consider not buying a new phone rather than saving that money and investing it to make more money and buy an iPhone, but still, Android is better

It makes no sense to install a custom ROM on a phone like the Xperia 1 close to launch. All the unique features of the phone (mainly the cameras) are locked behind the Sony custom API that is used by the stock apps running on the Sony app framework.
So at the very least you will need a Magisk module that ports over the latest version of the app framework to any generic ROM, and then install the stock (camera) apps.
Personally, I find the stock ROM close enough to AOSP that I haven't felt a need to install any custom ROM for the past 5 years now. When you install a custom ROM you are simply trading Sony bugs for things like missing implementations, partial hardware support etc.
There is nothing buggy. It's close to the os pixels launch with, their custom version of AOSP.
Just has a few more apps for camera stuff.
As an owner of the major flagship devices, this is the best all around experience and the best camera.
I recently had a Xiaomi 13 pro and thought it'd camera was best, nah this beats it and the os is leagues better. I have a pixel 7 pro also and I honestly won't ever use it again in comparison and I have the best roms I could build for it.
And as the others have said lineage is not an immediate thing anyone should just flash, and it's one of a gazillion roms and definitely not the first ROM I would flash...
